Since the word "halloween" is a contraction of "Hallow's Eve," the night before the Christian holy day, "All Hallow's Day," It'd think it should be pronounced HAL-oween, like you'd say hallow.

Like a PP, I say it in a way that sounds like the beginning of hollow, which does sound different than the way I pronounce the word haul. Not a lot, but noticeable. I'm from Michigan.

Maybe it is an accent thing. I pronounce it HOLL-oween. Like Hollow. To me haul sounds like HALL. Or I should say that I say it like HALL.

Must be. To me the "holl" in hollow sounds exactly the same as hall and haul. I guess I probably should have just went with "hollow" for the poll instead of haul. :scratchin

Yes, that's how I came to the conclusion that by pronouncing it hollow I've been doing it "wrong"! All Hallow's Eve. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. ;)

Hal as in All Hallows' Eve. I'm curious. Are the people who say Haul-o-ween southerners? I think people in the south pronounce certain vowels longer like up north we say pee-cans for pecans and in the south they say pi-kaahns
Southerner here.....HAL--O--WEEN. Like All Hallow's Eve. Not All Hollow's Eve.

I pronounce it the way it's spelled: HALL-o-ween

The hall is like hallway. If it was pronounced Hal like the name there would only be one "L" :confused3

Oh, and I'm from Oregon.

I'm from the south, & I say "hal-o-ween."

To me, "hall" & "hal" sound different as do "hallow" & "hollow."

Actually, not that I'm thinking about it, "hall" & "haul" sound very, very similar if not exactly alike.

Hal-o-ween born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. My grandma always said "pee-cans" and she was born and raised in Southern Utah.

I voted Hal but once I saw someone said hollow i realized that's how I really say it. Originally from ny like the poster who brought up hollow.

I'm from Michigan too and the words hall, haul and hollow all sound identical to my ear.

Hollow-ween. I lived in the Midwest until age 9, then in the Southeast. Most native Southerners I know do say Hal-oween, though.

Well, I voted that I said Hal-o-ween; however, after reading the later posts about Hollow-ween, that's how I say it. I know it's definitely not "Haul" though, which has the sound of "all" or "augment".

I'm either handicapped by my Western PA roots or the fact that I was a military brat that lived everywhere - but I can't distinguish the difference when I say it.

Hollow and haul-o are the same when I say it haha. Holl and Haul are phononyms to me, but I can see how in the northeast the might sound different.

I say it like Hollow- Haul and Hall are pronounced the same so neither of those is how I say it.
