How do you know if you have the upper berth

How do you know if the stateroom you've selected has an upper pulldown berth? We're booked in room 6550 on the Magic and I've read through the reviews, but nobody specifically mentions it.

If I don't have that and my daughter sleeps on the pull out sofa, I assume that they can install a bed rail on either side?

We sailed on the Dream last June on our first cruise and my daughter slept in the upper berth which already has a rail so we didn't need one.

The category of the room sleeps 3 or 4 and the upper berth is in "some rooms" of the category. Is there a room by room breakdown?

I don't know if a list exists, but you could always search your same cruise and category but put in 2 adults and 2 children and cross-check the cabins that show up against the ones that show up with 2 adults and 1 child. The ones that match would have the pull-down berth.

The sofa bed isn't that high off the ground though (pretty much where it wold be if you took a nap on the couch. Since it basically just flips over, I'm not sure there would be a way to fix rails to them, but you'd have to pretty much throw yourself our of that bed to do any serious damage to yourself.

You haven't seen my 6 year old sleep!

I can completely relate! My 4 year old sleeps on every inch of her California King, every single night. Without bed rails, she would likely sleep in every square inch of her whole room!

I think I found you a clue. :magnify: Looks like 6550 may indeed have the upper bunk. According the the room review I copied and pasted below, the reviewer stated that they had plenty of room for 4 suticases and 2 booster seats, which leads me to believe they have 2 children and two adults (4 people).

Ship:
Disney Magic Stateroom: 6550 Condition: 5
Deck: 6 Category: 5B Location: Mid
Sail Date: 08/20/11
Notes: Very convenient location, close to everything. Has a single steamer trunk. No special views, we were on the opposite side of most ports. Plenty of room for our things and our 4 suitcases and 2 booster seats!

Wow! Good sleuthing. We don't NEED the upper berth, but it sure is magical for the little ones. ;)

I totally get it. The upper bunks are the best part for kids. My kids always wanted one. They're fun. :yay:
Enjoy your cruise.

I'm wondering the same thing. We have two staterooms for 5 ppl and so it's not easy to tell by the max room capacity. I would just like to have the flexibility of the upper berth for my three kiddos and different sleeping arrangements. Our staterooms are 6587 and 6586 on the Magic.

Our TA says 6587 (which is 11A) has an upper berth and 6586 (5B) does not. But I did try and do the cross checking thing on DCL's website and it seemed like 6587 only would let me book 3ppl and not 4. Oh well, we can make it work either way.

It's possible it won't let you add another person in as the life boat is full. Not sure how full your cruise is. You could try other cruise dates and add in your room #'s and see if you can get 4 booked in the room.

6586 and 6587 both sleep 3 so neither of them will have the bunk bed. I have an old copy of the Passporter book and it has a listing of all the rooms on the Magic/Wonder and how many they sleep.

Does the Passporter confirm our sleuth above's deduction that 6550 has it?

Anyone know if you can request the upper bunk from your cabin steward (even if traveling with fewer than 4 in the room)?

If your room has the upper bunk just ask your steward to make that bed up instead of the couch.

We only have one kid (so three of us in our cabin) and the steward was happy to make up whichever bed our daughter wanted each night. She did the upper bunk the first 4 nights, the couch bed once, and then the Murphy bed the last two nights. :)

Years ago I had the dilemma of being booked into a room which according to the deck plans did not have the pull down, altho we were 2 adults and 2 kids. In a panic I called and was told ...

All the rooms in the category actually have the pull down. However the maximum passenger load was determined with only some of these filled. The booking system keeps track so they do not exceed their legal load.

Long funny story but I was actually able to confirm this with a cruise line VP ....

I met this VP on the bridge of MAGIC and related the story where the phone agent had actually told me "we don't show all the bunk beds in the book because we don't have enough life boats .... "; then I handed him my business card. At the time I was Commanding Officer of a Coast Guard Cutter which routinely patrolled the same area DCL cruised . . . I was in mufti at the time.
