How do you clean the jetted tubs before use?

I have never used the jetted tubs, we usually just throw our dirty laundry in there, but this trip I think I'll give it a try. I've read somewhere about cleaning it with a little bleach or something and having it run some.
What are your suggestions? We're flying to Fl.

We don't clean it either. We just use it. Dilution is the solution to pollution.

I use the dishwasher powder. I have used bleach before, but you have to do a grocery stop for that. I'm not a germ-a-phobe, but there's something about sitting in a whirlpool that has 'gooky' stuff in the jets from the previous user just grosses me out.

I always clean our whirlpool before using it. I use dishwasher tablets I bring along rom home. I run it for at least 15 minutes. The stuff coming out of those jets is disgusting. I'm talking black stuff, hair, oils. Cleaning the whirlpool is especailly important for women and young girls who are more susceptible to UTIs. It is easy to do. I take care of running it first while I unpack.

Just because folks who stay in resorts aren't necessarily smart about how to use Jacuzzi's, I do clean it each time first. I usually run a full tub with dishwasher detergent just like I was running a load of dishes in the dishwasher. Then I fill it again with clear water and run it again to get the dishwasher soap out of the jets.

The "gunk" you see coming out of those jets can be mold (from lack of use) or bath bombs (something that should NOT be used in a Jacuzzi), or any manner of other things that people seem to think is okay for the tubs. Frankly, at home, I only clean the jets once a year, but then I use my Jacuzzi at least once a week too, so no need to worry about mold.

We use the tablets that are meant to clean front load washing machines. I bought them online but I did see them in the appliance section of our local Home Depot.

OK - I had never thought about cleaning them before use - we never use them either!!!

But when we stay at BLT I think I will use mine, after cleaning it of course.

Another stupid question for you all............what are you suppossed to use in a jacuzzi soap wise to wash yourself???

we use diswashing powder also, it seems to be the only thing that really cleans it good.

Use what ever you normally would. The only thing you need to remember is not to run the jets after the soap is in the tub, it will make mountains of bubbles and a huge mess.
If you would rather not worry about the bubbles/soap, take a regular shower before or after your soak.

thanks for letting me know!!:wizard:

We turned the jets on one time, and the scum it created was so gross we never tried it again.

We clean the tub also. We use a part bleach/part dishwasher detergent Mixture. (I saw the 'recipe' for it in this board, but can't remember who posted it.) We let it run for 15 minutes, then let it soak for 15 minutes. We empty the tub and refill it again. Then we run it for 15 minutes just to rinse everything out. Drain that water out and then you are ready to go! It seems a little complicated, but it was worth it for our peace of mind. Lukily, we did not have anything yucky coming out of our jets.

Silly question here, but how do you know how much dish detergent powder to use in the tub?

I've never had anything gross come out of the jets. I've used 1 package of the dishwasher detergent, but would repeat the process with more if I felt it was needed. I think I used 2 packets the first time, but decided the second wasn't needed, based on nothing except the look of the water.

PS. I also think that if the stuff coming out of the jets was that bad, I would call mousekeeping...would they clean it? I hope they would. I wouldn't have anything to clean terrible dirt with me. I do "flush out" the tub first thing.

The "recipe" I used called for 1/4 cup of dishwasher detergent. That didn't seem like enough, so I added more. (I used the boxed detergent provided in the villa.) I probably used around a cup or so. The "recipe" also called for 1 cup of bleach, but I used a little more than that also. I had a small bottle of bleach (24 oz.) delivered with our grocery order, so I used around 1/2 of that. I think that it is a judgement call to see if what you used seems to be enough.

We had our previous home built and had a book from the manufacturer that said to fill the tub higher that the jets with hot water, adding dishwashing detergent and bleach and let run for 15 minutes. Then drain, fill with cold water and let run again. We had a jetted tub in the home we built before that and never knew to clean it the 7 years we lived there.
We moved into an existing home and the jets were nasty. I think I did the cycle several days before I felt it was clean.
There is no way I would use strange tubs without disinfecting. If you find dirt in the room, why think the tub has been properly cleaned?
