How do you clean sterling silver jewelery?

I saw on a show once that they used household kitchen products with tin foil to clean sterling silver jewelery

has anyone tried this?

I use silver polish for my Tiffany sterling silver bracelet. I buy it in the grocery store in the cleaning supply aisle. I heard the tinfoil way isn't good for your jewels.
