Homemade laundry tablets

Every time I go to Disneyworld I end up having to do a few loads of laundry. I also end up having to buy powdered *read messy and too much leftover* detergent to wash the clothes with.

I'm making my own laundry tablets out of powdered detergent and a few other secret ingredients. :p
Has anyone else ever made their own tablets and if so, how did they turn out?

Oh, you must share your secret! How do you make laundry tablets. I'd probably never bother doing it, but I must know how. :)

Thats neat. I usually buy the tablets and take them on vacation if I know Ill have to do laundry. I never would have thought to make them. Please share your secret.

I guessing maybe the secret ingrediet could be slivers of soap, borax, or lye.

I don't know how to make laundry tabs, but I sure do wish Tide made them again . . . :(

Where would I buy laundry tablets? I never really paid attention in the grocery store, actually never even heard of them untill reading a post on here one time.

Wisk still makes them. I bought some just a few weeks ago. Much easier than making your own!:D

They also had some of those sample sizes of all different kinds of laundry detergent, powder and liquid.

Deb, I'm using Tide powder, my tried and true Dawn dish soap and a few drops of water to wet the mixture a bit more. Mixed it up and tablespooned it into small dixie cups to dry.
We'll see how it works but they LOOK great! LOL

I'm thinking all I'll have to do is pop it out of the cup and toss it in the washer but I COULD be wrong and I'll end up with a big mess. We'll see.

Good luck, and don't forget to post how it turned out.

Well it's nice when you can find them locally but I've never had the pleasure of even seeing them at our stores.
Even if I did see them I'd probably skip 'em....I'm way too cheap to buy that *new fangled* stuff.

I'll keep ya posted how mine turn out. They started looking funny as they dried so I scooped them out of the cups and discovered something fun with 'em. I'm just rolling them into little doughy marbles/balls to dry that way.

Not sure this is gonna work but it's fun to play with. :p

Gee, just trying to help. Perhaps I'm reading something into it, but that seems to have upset you for some reason???

Since they were at Wal Mart, I thought those who wanted some but didn't want to try and figure out how to make them might want to take a look.

The tablets are great for traveling. Before they made them, I just measured out enough powder detergent for one load and put it in a small ziplock baggie and then put several of them in a larger ziplock bag. Served the same purpose.

That's what I used to do too and then one trip the double baggied powder leaked. What a mess!!! Then I tried taking liquids with me but they leak too. Dang....LOL LOL

Surely you're joking. What makes you think I'm upset? I said that it's NICE when you can find them locally. And this comment makes you think I'm upset?

I did have to look in several stores for the tablets. Not sure where I eventually found them--maybe Wal-Mart or Target, but I only use them when traveling so they last me a long time.

I am concerned, particularly if the laundromat has a front loader, that the Dawn dish detergent could cause oversudsing. Most laundry detergents limit their sudsing ability. Wouldn't it be easier to put a single load amount of Tide in a double zip lock bag? I found Purex tabs before I went to Hawaii and those packed well. I don't use them when I get home, I just save the left overs for the next trip. They are more expensive than liquids.

I put my Tide in a butter tub, taped the lid shut, then put it in a ziploc bag. No mess.

Good point about front loader machines. I hadn't thought about the different soap types. They do have a front loader washer at the Beach Club Villas so I'll have to use caution on the amounts I use or not use the front loading machines.

Thanks for the heads up/reminder about the Dawn, Dawn! :p :Pinkbounc

I've been finding the tablets to be hard to find as well. My local grocery store, which used to carry a couple of different brands, doesn't anymore. I find them on occasion at Wal-Mart or at a local discount store we have in my area called Expect Discounts. My mother has sometimes had luck finding them at Brooks or CVS pharmacies too. I have her on the look-out, as she and my dad "schlep" around a lot, that whenever they see them, buy them!

Sometimes, if we are going to be there for a week or more, and I think I am going to be doing a few loads of wash, I'll buy a small bottle of laundry soap at Publix when we go to do the shopping for our DVC unit. I just leave the bottle behind when we go if it's not all used up.

Somebody posted a link awhile back that you could use to find stores that carried the tablets - there were none within 200 miles of me so they have not been widely distributed nationally. At least I finally figured out why I could never find any. I live in Wal*Mart land (AR) but none of our WMs carried the tablets.

I always have a car when I'm in Orlando so I just pick up a small bottle of liquid detergent at a grocery store. I think it only cost me $2 when I was there in May and then I just left the rest for somebody else to have.
