We flew in and out of Savannah. The rental car co had printed directions to HH Island, and your reservation confirmation has directions once you get to the Island.
If you golf you certainly can while away a week there on your own with no problem. Beaufort is a worthwhile side trip. My own opinion is Charleston is best visited if you can stay overnight there at least one night. It's quite a drive for a day trip.
I will add that there is an airport on the island, airport code HHH. I 've found direct flights on United and US Airways out of Charlotte NC but they're roughly double the price of flying into Savannah.
We fly in and out of Atlanta when going to HHI because we have a lot of flights to choose from. It took us about five hours to drive from Atlanta to HHI.

As long as you don't mind the drive, it's a plus for direct flights. 75S to 16E to 95N...and be sure to stop for some BBQ in Macon, GA (where 75 and 16 intersect).
Otherwise, Savannah is the closest international and I believe it's officially become Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport now.
