Hillary the Candidate and "Socks".

I'm not a Hillary fan, but want to set the facts straight.

1. Sock's was Chelsea's cat. Socks became very fond of Betty and spent his (or was Socks a her? ) days in the White House hanging around Betty's desk. Socks didn't get along with Buddy, and the Clinton's decided that because the cat had bonded with Betty and would have to share a much smaller space with the dog in their new home, that the cat would be happier staying in Washington with Betty. It was in the best interest of Socks that he went to live with Betty.

2. Buddy was killed when he chased a contractor's vehicle into the street and was hit by another car. Neither Bill or Hillary were home at the time, the Secret Service had let Buddy out of the house.

#1 is also the story that I heard. Also Betty really liked the cat and was sad that she wouldn't be able to spend time with him after the Clinton's left office. Everyone was happy with the arrangement.

I think this statement typifies what is wrong with politics in America. BOTH SIDES keep looking for a socks the cat achilles heel type moment and they take away from the substance of the debate. Both sides take so much insignificant information and take it out of context and turn it into either ads or oft repeated blog-o-blather.

It has always gone on in politics, but because of the WWW it spreads like wildfire.

You're certainly entitled to your take on things, and so am I. As a rule though, not a lot of posters throw 3 or 4 different Hillary threads out first thing in the morning and then watch the carnage. And when they loose people's interests, posts a few more for good measure, but then again, it must be that ol' paranoia settling in again.

I think this statement typifies what is wrong with politics in America. BOTH SIDES keep looking for a socks the cat achilles heel type moment and they take away from the substance of the debate. Both sides take so much insignificant information and take it out of context and turn it into either ads or oft repeated blog-o-blather.

It has always gone on in politics, but because of the WWW it spreads like wildfire.

It's the old philosophy that Karl Rove honed to perfection. If you have nothing good to say about your own candidate, just bombard your opponent with a smear campaign. Doesn't matter if there isn't a shread of truth to it. Just shovel it on as fast as you can and maybe no one will notice.

I have to admit, I find most of the threads you start to be interesting, and I do find them to be generally good reading.

In any case, I guess that was my glass house/stone throwing moment for the day. You may now return to which ever side of partisan political debates you normally find yourselves on.

Well I'm not any politician's fan right now, but I am an animal lover who has recently lost our beloved family dog. I honestly do not understand how anyone could give up a pet after having it for so many years. All our pets have been family members and giving one away would be like giving away one of our family.

As far as affection our pets have always bonded with us. We fed them and gave them love and attention and their loyalty was always directed towards us. I do think Socks was very lucky that Betty was able and willing to take him. I do think this Socks situation with the Clintons doesn't seem right.

But it was Chelsea's cat. If there should be any disapproval at all, it should be directed at her, not Bill and Hillary. Blame Chelsea for not taking her cat with her when she moved.

Socks was Chelsea's cat. She had adopted him in Little Rock when Clinton was the Governor. By the tiem Clinton left office, Chelsea was off to college. It was about the time Chelsea left for colleg that Bill got Buddy. Buddy and Socks hated each other. Socks had always enjoyed hanging around Betty's desk, and did so even more so once Buddy was in the picture. Because Chelsea wwas going to be at least three more years in school before she would be living full time with Socks, and because Socks hated Buddy, it made sense to leave socks with Betty.

I'm generally disgusted by "throwaway pet syndrome" but in this case I think that leaving Socks with Betty was a wise decision. They didn't just hand the cat off to the guy who delivered the office supplies each week, but rather made a smart choice to leave the cat with a trusted friend and confidant who the cat knew--and chose to be around. The other option was taking the cat to Chappaqua and forcing it to live with a rambunctious dog who the cat despised. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Sorry, but I wouldn't have the heart to give away any of my children's pets especially one that had been in my home for that length of time. I do think that Socks was lucky that Betty was able to take him.

I think I must have said a few times, that it won't be Sock's the cat. It will be about the issues but it will also be things that point to issues of character and integrity. I am sure they will emerge as the race continues.

Yes, but if trying to dirty someone's image as a person is now resorting to saying they are a bad person because they gave a cat to someone who the cat liked then I think the election is over already.

And the majority of the obscene amount of money they raise goes into these negative ads. While boycotting election day to teach them a lesson is tempting, we could never pull it off. Our fear that the "other guy" will get in forces us to the polls. They have the power and they know it. I don't see anything changing anytime soon. Our one protest is to let the candidates know we think those tactics are deplorable. Emails are free and don't take much time. It's a start.

The socks thing is clearly a non issue...I hope the American blogosphere steers clear of it.

I hope Hillary does not win the Dem. nomination (although at this point I prefer her over the current Rep. line up) but I will be disgusted if this gets any more attention than it already has.
