High School Graduation Anouncements?

I have never received a graduation announcement. Maybe my family just doesn't do it. We do send graduation gifts, big ones for close relatives and friends and small ones for distant cousins and the like. Usually I know when my relative's kids are graduating. I keep in touch.

Wow, angry much?

We don't send them to people across the country we haven't seen in 20 years, we will send them to people on our Christmas card list for the most part. We also don't include a "cash request" and we have NEVER received one like that either :confused3.

Not angry where would get that? I find it tacky my opinion. I love the DIS where only the popular opinion is the right one.

Wow, I didn't know this was even something that was up for debate. I assumed everybody did it. My parents sent them out when I graduated from HS in 1991 and I sent them out when I graduated from college in 2008. Gifts were not requested nor expected; it was just an announcement. Nothing more, nothing less.

OP here, back on track please.... my question is when should I send them out? ;)

Announcements are simply to let relatives and friends know you are graduating. My siblings and I all sent them out because the only time we saw our relatives were weddings and funerals.

When I graduated I made sure that I sent them out. Both of my older brothers did and got lots of CA$H. And I'll say that yes, I did it so that I could get $$$ too. I sent them out to every relative and family friend I could think of and apparently they didn't mind, I got close to $1000. Tacky? Maybe. But at 18 I sure didn't give a you know what!

I sent them out when I graduated too and the thought NEVER crossed my mind that I would get gifts from anyone I sent one too..:confused3

I was just so excited I graduated!!

I think if I remember right it was about 4-6 weeks..I need to get in gear as mine will be graduating next year...:woohoo:

:lmao: At least your honest about it.

Never received one..and never sent one out. This will be our third graduating this June.

Really I don't understand why would one bother to send an annoucement to someone they didn't intend to invite to a graduation party. Just to let relatives or friends on their Christmas card list know that their child is graduating? Isn't that like saying..."well, we don't talk to you that often, we don't want to actually invite you to the party...but little Janey is graduating, and if you feel like sending a gift $$$ we won't send it back..
Just include that little tidbit in the BS Christmas Card letter.
At least those go right into the shredder...:rotfl:

I guess I should say that everyone that is on my list is INVITED and they know it. And yes some are out of state and some have come just depends on their schedule is all. Plus a lot of the ones I send one too is b/c I am proud to say that I graduated or that my kid graduated. has nothing to do with wanting a present!! but of course this is how WE do things...;)

We're sending out announcements to family and close friends two weeks before graduation. Since our school district only provides 6 tickets per student, it's just the immediate family and grandparents that can actually attend the ceremony.

Same here. We just might have some people from across the country come for his party. We have some friends and family members that will probably use it as an excuse to come visit, fine with me, it will be great to see them.

I wasn't planning to send out any announcements. Is it really necessary?

Only if you are looking for more gifts!

Me either....and this is my third child graduating. Never sent out annoucements before. I figure the people most important to us..know he's graduating, no need to annouce it.
I've never received one either. Frankly, I think I'd take it as a sort of "send a gift" type of annoucement. Not sure I'm comfortable with that.

I personally see them as a gift grab. .

I totally agree with you!

Oh, good heavens, they're not a gift grab. It's been very common in some parts of the country for years. I'd actually be a little offended if a family member was graduating and I didn't get one--I love to see the senior pictures. I sent them out in the early 80's. My sister sent them out in the early 70's. DD sent them out last year.

We included a senior picture and an invitation to the open house. No gifts required or expected.

To answer the OP's question--we sent them out 6 weeks before the open house. It gives people time to plan since there are always a lot of graduations and weddings that time of year.

It is very common where I live.

Namely because only a few people can actually attend graduation-each kid gets only 4-8 tickets, depending on the venue. Not everybody has a party-its a way to tell people about your kid's acheivement-and send a current picture.:)

I think it's common knowledge that the actual ceremony are limited in the number of tickets. I still don't think that would warrant an annoucement. Certainly everyone that you'd invite to a party wouldn't be invited to the actual ceremony. Thank God..:rolleyes1 I mean while certainly... it's an important day to the graduate (and we've got one this year) and their family, most folks coming to the party don't want to be at the actual ceremony...with the possible exception of grandparents and the like.

Then again, I imagine their might be some folks relieved by the announcement and not the invite...

Sounds like a regional thing. I've never received a graduation announcement and didn't send them out for DS's big day either. We did, however, have a nice party and sent out invites for that. For that matter, the only type of announcement I've ever received is for a new baby and that is only from people that I had already attended the baby shower for.

Ok, I get it now--the invite and the announcement are the SAME THING around here. I don't know what people call them announcements but around here the announcement is really an invite to the graduation party not just a "John is graduating" thing. Actually, I don't think anyone even puts the actual graduation date on there-just the party date--something like this:

Come celebrate John Doe's Graduation from High School
Open House June 1st 1:00-4:00
123 Any Street
Anytown, MN 12345

Usually with a photo greeting card of one of their senior pictures.

Here is an example I found on the interent:

The golf course they are hosting their reception at is a great course too :lmao:
