High school class rings!

My son just got his this year, his was about $225. He got 10K, which is more durable than 14K, and cheaper. It's a nice looking ring, but he never wears it, which I knew he wouldn't..... but at least he hasn't lost it yet!!!!

Let's see, I graduated 33 years ago. My parents bought my class ring for Christmas at about $125.00. (alot of cash back then!) I wore it for several years, until it didn't fit anymore. I then passed it on to my DD.

She has my first wedding band too because it no longer fits. She wears that one right along with her wedding rings. And I think that's kinda nice!

DD decided not to get one because she is changing high schools due to our move. Instead, she is going to get a nice ring that she can continue to wear after high school.

I got mine this year. I think it was 275 or 295...don't remember what now, since I changed my mind so many times. If Jostens is doing the rings definitely go through the school, even though it will be more expensive. They are a top notch company (a lot of colleges even use them), and you will get added "ring insurance", in case the ring is lost.
My mom paid the down payment ($50) plus half of the balance. I paid the other half of the balance. That's the same arrangement my friends had with their parents. At my school, most kids get rings. Some wear them a lot; some don't. Since November the only time I haven't worn my ring was our week in Florida, because I was too scared I would lose it, so I left it home. Other than that I've worn it everyday and will continue to do so.

Yea, I knew when the first thing they told the kids was: "these rings are going to cost more than your parents HS rings" and then the brochure came home without any prices listed... we were in trouble.

Thanks to the info here - I think I'll check some local jewelry stores before I order.

I do remember I got mine at the jeweler because I wanted a hockey player on the side. I wore it maybe 18 mos. and that was it. My middle ds now has it -- age 11, he asked if he could have it, I said sure.

I ordered mine through Target, and it was VERY reasonable. The school doesn't want you to know that every jeweler in town carries them as well, not to mention Target and WalMart.

You dont HAVE to pay their prices =)

I think my high school ring was like $167. I eventually sold it. :teeth: Business school was about $250. College...passed on the one for community college.

We'll be ordering DS's high school ring soon. The company that his school deals with is Balfour, which is the same exact company that I got my own high school ring through 25 years ago.

I priced a ring for DS through Wal-Mart (same exact specs) and the Wal-Mart ring was only less than $50 cheaper than through Balfour ($350 compared to $389). And Balfour had MANY more activities and design options to choose from. They also will REPLACE the ring if it's lost, for 4 years, if you buy it through the school. (No extra charge for ordering through the school). Also, if you move to a new school, they will change the ring for you for no charge, and they'll resize it for you if you ever need it resized. DS can only wear real gold, he's allergic to all other metals including sterling silver, so I'll order his ring in 10K since it's much sturdier than 14K.

My parents bought my class ring. I got it from a local jeweler. It was a small, traditional class ring. That's what I wanted. I didn't wear it long, though. I wore it my junior year of highschool (I think I got it in the second half of my junior year) and stopped wearing it once I started college. Didn't get a college or law school ring...wouldn't wear it.

My DH didn't get a highschool ring...he felt that graduating from highschool wasn't a big accomplishment. He's debating about getting one from college.

Back in 1988, I bought my own ring. If i remember correctly it was about $200.

My parents bought mine for me in 87 and it was a white 14K gold ring with an emerald for the stone and it was 450 dollars.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'm just getting old and those are the prices nowadays  (did I just write "nowadays":earseek: ) The company DD's hs is using is Balfour. If the prices are not much more than WalMart, I guess I will probably go with them. I will, however, check out the local jewelers though. I did tell her NO DIAMONDS, however.:)

Thanks for sharing all your "ring stories". I never had a high school ring.:( Can't really remember why.

I do think the ring is more of a "sentimental" thing than actually a piece of jewelry.

I still wish that I had bought my school ring in high school. My parents would have bought half of it and I would have bought the other half. We decided not to get it in Grade 12 because I was going on to Grade 13 then I got sick and couldn't finish it (I have since got the 2 credits I was missing from night school). Same thing with graduation pictures. We didn't buy the ones from Grade 12 either!! My best friend still has hers and wears it about 1/2 the year. I wish I could get one now even. What a loser, right?!! I loved high school. Well except for the hard work!!

Mine was about that price, too....so I never bought one. Too expensive!

I don't have a high school ring, mainly because I'd rather forget that high school ever happened. That place gave me so much trouble, they should have bought ME jewelry.

And my college's rings are ugly (antique gold with a purple stone, really not my style) so... maybe I'll get one when I finish grad school? :p

I bought my Class ring from Fox jewerlers in my local mall. I think it was from jobsens ( i know it was one of big Class ring Co.) I wore mine up until the shield fell out of it, And it started wearing thin on bottom. I kinda wish I had gone with a dresser/girly style than what I did. I bought mine my freshman yr of HS.

My mom tod me if I wanted a class ring, I'd have to buy it myself. So I did. I can't remember how much it was, but that was forever ago that I bought it.:p

When I bought mine, it was around $250 or so. That was about 12 years ago. I didn't have it very long and I think I fed it to a dolphin.

I was in the fish house stuffing fish gills with vitamins and spirolina when I last saw it. I've always been afraid I stuffed it into a fish gill. For all I know, it fell into the gulf but I've always had a fear that my class ring is sitting in one of the dolphins. ;)
