High School class of 2011

I have a question for everyone. My ds plays trombone. How does he go about politely asking at his first choice school if they will give him scholarship money for playing his trombone in 1 or 2 of the school bands? Is it best if he asks or can I? Is an email okay? His #1 school is pricey so he needs to obtain scholarship money to make it a reality.

A lot of the schools have that info on their web sites. Some of my son's choices had "non-major" performance scholarships, others didn't. Some schools only give scholarships to music majors.

If the web site doesn't say, just email the music department or band director and ask. But don't delay because the scholarship will require an audition.

Thanks missypie. Should ds do the emailing? I am sure that is better but ds is swamped with work right now. I know, just an excuse.

Well, I'm very glad I trekked through the snow to the mailbox. Dd found out two days ago she was accepted to state flagship and invited to join the Honors College. She got a letter today notifying her of a full tuition scholarship and a one time grant of $2500 to be used for enrichment. (Research, study abroad, internship, etc.)

She also found out a few days ago she was accepted to her number two choice, honors, with a half tuition scholarship. Dollarwise, it's much larger than the state school scholarship, but we'll have to see what the complete aid pkg. looks like. She'll have to wait until April to find about about her #1 choice, and also for her last-minute reach school application. She's got the stats for the reach school, but so do a million other kids, so basically it's a crapshoot, and I am not optimistic.

Anyhow, she has two good, affordable choices right now (the other is an out of state public with full tuition that would actually be cheaper than our in-state school). I'm very relieved and very proud of her.

It is CRITICAL that HE do the emailing, etc. My son is busy too and it's hard to let it go, but we have to. This is college we're talking about and I can't imagine colleges would be too excited about a parent doing this. All the college nights, etc. we've been to have mentioned that the student is the one they talk to.

My son just found out about another scholarship he didn't get. Discouraging. Everyone who knows my son assumes he'll have a full ride somewhere, but it sure doesn't seem to be happening for him. I'm afraid that at the place he really wants to go, he'll get nothing.

Ctinct, that is awesome news- for both schools! Was the full tuition scholarship a presidential scholarship? That is great that she found out so soon and doesn't have to wait until March. I am hoping that my dd will get a scholarship like yours did. She will be a senior next year.

Congratulations ctinct! That's great news:cheer2:

We got some great news right before Christmas too. My DS was awarded a Trustees Scholarship to his #2 school, full tuition. He was pretty excited. The school called to tell him before he got the letter in the mail. Then this week, the Honors College dean called to speak to him, he was at work at the time, but the dean and I had a nice chat. He didn't tell me outright, but I think this was the call inviting him into the Honors College, that letter hasn't come yet, but based on the invite to the honors mixer, I assume it will be here soon.
His 1st choice school is Penn State, with all the competition, I doubt we wil see money like this, so he will probably end up at 2nd choice.

On another note, call me a sap, but it hit me last week that my baby is going away to college, and it took all I had not to cry. :sad1:

I read somewhere, probably earlier in this thread, about a book "Naked Roommate" I bought it for my son for Christmas, and based on his laughs, he is enjoying it very much. So I went out and bought the parents version- The Happiest Kid on Campus. I am finding it very helpful and informative so far. I think it will be very valuable come this fall, when one or both of us is homesick, and need some reassurance.

DisneyNutMary -

Thanks for the recommendations, just bough them both off of Amazon.

agnes!

I think it was me who mentioned the books originally and I also bought the naked roomate book for DD and unfortunately she has absolutely no interest in reading it. :( Or in anything else I have to say...Oh well.

This is my son. I got him a few Christmas gifts of things he could use in college. He asked if I was trying to push him out the door. Even my dh agreed that stuff for college was a poor Christmas gift. It ticket me off because dh doesn't help one iota in choosing gifts for the kids. He won't be the one helping ds outfit a dorm room either.

Has anyone started filling out the room request and meal plans? I think DS has decided to go with the traditional dorm (bath down the hall). His thinking is that then someone else will clean it. Ok by me considering boys probably won't clean it! But we are stuck on the meal plan. How much do we put in the regular cafeteria plan and how much for the fast food options? I can't decide what will be the right balance.

DS18 had the option of 200 meals and $320 in "Bucks". He had 20 meals left at the end of the semester and is switching to the 100 meal plan and $640 "bucks". His issue were the dining hall hours during breakfast and lunch. He found it easier to eat at the cafes on campus for those meals and they ate at the dining hall for dinner.

Filling out the...?!? Shoot, DD hasn't gotten any acceptances yet and I am putting off the FAFSA.

Re: dining plans: I have heard that opting for more of a % in the fast-food/personal choice option is the way to go, meals that are scheduled don't always match up with the reality of college-students' lives.

agnes!

Thanks guys.

I was leaning that way - more fast food bucks less actual meals. I asked a couple other people and they said the same thing about timing. I don't want DS to not have enough but sure don't want to over spend either. He is taking his car and so can go off campus also if he wants to.

Our goal was to finish this today!

Yeah, DD17 is going with the traditional dorm, bathroom-down-the-hall plan. As soon as they told her there was a housekeeper to clean the bathrooms twice a day, she was all over that. Plus, I think she's worried about being lonely. That's one thing she'll never be in the traditional dorm.:goodvibes

DD went with 10 meals per week, plus $360 bucks in her account. She eats very little for breakfast and plans to just keep those things in her room. She's also vegetarian, so many of the food choices in teh dining hall will not work for her. Her school has a Starbucks and a Sushi bar on campus, which I'm sure she will love. We'll see how it all pans out.

i am a seniorrr!!!!!!!
and will be moving to floridaa and trying to get a job at disney=) ....... senior year is the airport before the adventure haha.

At DS's school they can carry over $200 of their fast food dollars into the next semester but not their meal punches. The fast food dollars work in the dining hall too so it makes sense to have more in the dollars.

Um, I don't have anything to fill out!

All we've done is put down the $50 housing deposit. No other choices to make yet. I'm ready to do that stuff 'cause we know where she's going but they haven't sent us anything to do.

DS's school it is all done online. Check their website.

I have always been willing ot be my kdis' secretary during the college app process. The school doens't know who is doing the emailing. Lots of these folks are only available duirng normal business hours and most kids are not available during normal business hours. Also, I was always very invovled in the scholarship application process..because I am payng, it matters to me a lot that my kid get the scholarship.
