High School class of 2011

I'm going to wait until we both (DD & myself) get confirmation of our PINs...otherwise I think we won't be able to access our saved information - we won't be able to prove we are 'us' kwim?

agnes!

Hmm, i didn't even think about that. I just submitted our DDs FAFSA and got immediate confirmation. I hope its not going to be a problem for us later. I'll have to go in and adjust some of the numbers since i used our 2009 tax return to give me a balllpark figure. It really wasn't hard to fill out and we got good news.:goodvibes

You're probably right minky...I just want to wait for confirmation of the PINs, just in case they turn us down & give us other #s or something like that. And I am fairly certain we won't qualify for much (if any at all) 'need' aid anyway, but we still gotta do it for some merit scholarships, etc.

agnes!

This is our first time filling out the FAFSA. Can someone please enlighten me on the PIN's? We have one pin and I'm assuming it's for DD. You only fill out the form once correct, but need 2 pins? I am so totally confused:confused3

You need to PINs for your electronic signature. Your student has a place to electronically sign(with the PIN) and you have a different place to electronically sign with your own PIN. Not a big deal at all.

Just did our Fafsa, and it wasn't hard at all. I did the Profile a few weeks ago for an early action school, and that was much more involved. (Keep your fingers crossed for good aid for dd. Letters from this college were mailed on the 31st, and although I'm pretty certain she'll get in, we are hoping for some nice merit money. That info will come with the decision letter.)

A question for those of you who have done the Profile form before---I know I need to go back and modify the one I did because I just used estimated income figures, just like the Fafsa. And I know it is good to do the Fafsa as early as possible and update it later. Is the same true of the Profile form? I have a couple of other schools that require it, but I did not send the estimated one to them yet. Is it better to send and correct later, or do most schools want you to wait until taxes are done?

We completed Fasfa for DD today too! I applied for our two pins, and then completed Fasfa. I used our 2009 taxes as estimates, so I'll update the info with our 2010 tax info. It was easier than I thought, which was a nice surprise!

Another FAFSA filer here, completed it today, with the estimates based on the 2009 taxes.

We'll have a DD going away to college THIS YEAR!

DH and I were home alone last night, all the kids out at parties, we watched Toy Story 3, and I was crying!!

OMG, I was a complete wreck in that movie! :sad1: boo hoo hoo!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was emotional over Toy Story 3. We rented it from Redbox a couple of nights ago and I lost it. I had to go in the kitchen to pull myself together and my DS who is the one graduating came in the kitchen to check on me. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. This school year is going way to fast. :sad1:

I didn't even make it through the previews last summer! Cried like a baby during the movie. DS 18 was a total Buzz and Woody fan.

Okay, I started the FAFSA, not sure when I will finish it thoug, I cannot estimate based on 2009 taxes because I was laid off and collecting unemployment, went back to work that summer. So this year, I worked, and my income was nothing near what I made before (or the unemployment amount :/)

It's been an active few weeks for my son. He got his final accpetances, then found out he won a full-tuition scholarship to Hofstra. He applied to the honors college at Penn State, applied for a science scholarship to Penn State, applied for a Dr Seuss "Oh the Places You'll Go" scholarship, and found out about a few more scholarships he can apply for.

For Christmas, he got two books (among other things) 1001 Things Every College Student Needs to Know, and The Naked Roommate. He has been reading both, and based on the laughs, he is enjoying them. I, on the other hand, am starting to worry about how I will take him going away. I am getting nervous about missing him, and him not calling home - ever. It's way too early for me to be nervous, but I can't help it.:sad2:

DD 17 is a senior and has been accepted to her first choice university. That is exciting news for her and exciting yet terrifying news for us as she is our first.
We began filling out the FAFSA today and it was not as bad as I thought it would be. DD had her first summer job last year and it looks like we need her earnings and tax info also. Is that right? She didn't make much $ at all but it looks like it has to be included in the student financial section.

Anyway, just wanted to join the thread. There is great info here. I am sure we wil have questions along the way! Thanks OP for starting this thread!

Hey everybody! I have been avoiding this thread all fall and I just cannot stay away anymore.

My DS graduates this spring and has already been accepted to his first choice school with the offer of scholarships for about 45% of what he will need. He is very excited and I am in denial!!!

When we saw Toy Story 3, my heartbroke! :sad1: It was just soo sad to see Andy pack up his room.

I know exactly how you feel.... I was actually excited for my son when college was a far off in the future idea. We had fun driving all over the northeast to look at schools. But now that the acceptances are in, and his list is whittled down to two schools, I am in denial; this really isn't happening, is it?:scared1:

Anyone else's HS Seniors having *severe* trouble getting up this morning? I wonder if a tardy is on the horizon...

agnes!

No, no trouble waking up. My HS Senior DD's *severe* trouble is her attitude! It's been a rough year so far!

AM i GONNA MISS HIM WHEN HE IS GONE??

YES!! he is the last and we will be empty nesters, so i will miss him and all his activites, scouts and band and even drum practice..;)

1 month after we were married, his Mom moved in and stayed with us til her death.. i had kids etc so we have never been alone in 21 years..:scared1: so it will be a BIG adjustment..

When DS#1 went off to college, i had hopes but soon learned that even though we bought him a smart phone, he wasnt gonna call every week, this year we didnt even see him for Thanksgiving.. all summer he worked in Iowa by his gf....plus it was an adjustment to making smaller meals.. i was used to a BIG eater that was gone..and now i had just DH and DS#2 who thought that pasta and MCD's was okay.. my good eater was gone and not coming home.. yeah he was here 2 weeks at xmas, 2 weeks in the summer and that was it.. so

i have no illusions that DS#2 will be much different.. once they are gone, they are gone.. gonna clean his room, and then learn how to be just us two:thumbsup2:):lovestruc

Well, my son has completely changed everything around since the beginning of December. Until then, he refused to consider any other possibility but Virginia Tech. We made him apply to other schools and made him go visit those schools. My husband and I went to Tech so he's been there many times.

He absolutely fell in love with Bowling Green State. I was so shocked that he came home and took care of business--called admissions at Tech and converted his Early Decision application at Tech to Regular Decision. I went ahead and put his housing deposit down to save his place in line, but we've told him he has to at least visit South Carolina if he's accepted and awarded in-state tuition because they have such a good business school. He also agreed that he would major in Business and minor in Sports Management wherever he ends up going.

I'm happy for him that he's found his school, but I could have strangled him for not listening to me about applying Early Decision before he'd visited the other schools. Fortunately, they were totally fine with it and converted it with a few clicks of the keyboard.

Congrats to all the kids on this thread getting in to their choice schools! It's been really exciting watching the kids my son has gone to school with his whole life getting in where they want to go. One of his closest friends got in to Columbia early decision and his girlfriend got in to Georgetown. Another friend just signed to run track at UVA, another friend signed to play soccer at William and Mary. I've known these kids since they were preschoolers--I'm so happy to see them get into these great schools.

I have a question for everyone. My ds plays trombone. How does he go about politely asking at his first choice school if they will give him scholarship money for playing his trombone in 1 or 2 of the school bands? Is it best if he asks or can I? Is an email okay? His #1 school is pricey so he needs to obtain scholarship money to make it a reality.
