Ahoy fellow DISers! Anyone who is on the Feb 10 Disney Magic, keep an eye out for hidden treasure on Pirate Night! Around the ship we are going to hide 8 wooden treasure chests full of fake coins and gems. One of the chests will be extra special with a Disney gift card, a Mickey necklace and topped with real gold coins (Canadian Loonies lol). If you find one of them, be sure to post on here, my kids and I would love to see who found them and where.

Happy Hunting!

Those boxes are beautiful and this is a magnificent pixie dust for those on the cruise. You might want to stick a small note in the the treasure chest too letting the finder know they are allowed to keep it and maybe email you a picture. There are a lot of people on the ship who aren't part of these boards.

We found our first book crossing book on the fantasy this year, and would have just taken it to guest services if it weren't for the notes!

Agree with PP; you need to put some sort of note in it saying that these are presents to whoever finds them. If they are unmarked I could even see DCL staff picking them up.

With all due respect, while I do appreciate the hard work and kindness in doing this, I am not so sure this is a good idea. As a guest, I'm paying Disney prices because I like the idea that Disney is in control. I would have an expectation that DCL runs the treasure hunt if I were to find one of your chest, and would be pretty angry if I were to discover this isn't the case.

I'm not giving you any recommendation or advice, just make sure to be prepared in case of some guests rushing to Guest Services to complain. DCL will have no issues using CCTV to trace the chests back to you.

Everywhere you go, you will see crew members working to keep the ship spotless. I'm pretty sure your thoughtful treasure boxes will be picked up right away and taken to Guest Services. But, I do have a good suggestion so you can still share your magic: As you walk down guest cabin hallways, you'll notice some cruisers have hung a "Fish Extender" outside of their cabin doors (they'll look like cloth letter holders or maybe even bags) that are used for pre-planned gift exchanges. Your family could randomly choose eight of these FE's to put your surprise treasure boxes in. That is known as "Pixie Dusting" and your chosen recipients will love them!

Have a great cruise!!

Well I thought it was a good idea until reactions like this rolled in. Sad but I guess this person has a point as well.

With the same due respect, and I am being serious, not snarky. I'm really puzzled by this. What would make you pretty angry to discover this? I could see maybe a concern about safety - there's a lot of diversity in how people experience safety. But angry? And complaining to Guest Services? If concerned about safety, leave it be and move on. But some (through fish extenders and the like) invite random acts of kindness aboard ship. I'm sorry. I don't really understand the reaction and hope that the OP doesn't let this shrink her enthusiasm.

Truly - no offense intended.

On our last cruise, this past Thanksgiving, both of my kids found little treasures like this hidden around the ship. One was actually hidden right at the guest services counter in a plant, I think. There was a little note attached which made it clear that we could either keep it as a gift or hide it again for someone else. These were little rubber duckies, which were very fun for my kids to find....and they would have been overjoyed to find a treasure chest filled with coins and gems!

I can definitely see the fun in this but also question hiding boxes around the ship. They will probably be confiscated by the crew members. I think just putting the items in those participating in the fish extenders would be a better idea. Hidden boxes could be seen as something else by the staff, especially if the lids are closed.

Edited to say.....these would be fabulous gifts. Beautiful work. If I lived near you, I’d buy them!!

I seriously don't understand all the negative comments here!! Disney cruises are Magical, and here someone wants to do something to make it a little more Magical for eight kids just out of the kindness of their own heart! I agree that maybe a note on them would relieve some of your concerns, but this is all about sharing the Magic of Disney! wilyum, maybe stop at Guest Services and let them know so if someone really has an issue with you sharing the Magic with these and they report it to Guest Services that they'll already know what they are, what's in them and that it's nice to know that you were able to make the cruise that much more Magical for those that found them!! My kids, and myself, would have loved to have found these on one of our cruises!! Don't let others discourage you from Sharing The Magic!! Happy Sailing!! :disrocks:

Pixie Dust is a big tradition on DCL cruises. That said, I would agree to pixie dust in people's fish extenders and not around the ship. My concern is that as a parent of little kids, we try to teach our kids not to grab toys they see lying around because it doesn't belong to them. It can be hard to explain to little ones who can't read a note that this toy is something they can find and keep, but if they find someone's missing toy at the pool deck, that's not theirs--at least with the fish extenders they know a surprise in there is theirs because it is on their cabin door and not just something they found under a chair in a public area. There is also the aspect of how it would be a shame for these to go to waste if they get tidied up by the cleaning crew.

I don't think people are trying to be negative, just more pragmatic. Unfortunately, we live in a time in this world of "If you see something, say something." You can't leave a piece of luggage unattended at the airport, etc.

So I could imagine that some people or ship crew might be wary of unexpected box-like objects at random spots on the ship. YOU know they are for fun, but the 3000+ other guests and crew don't know that.

It's a nice idea with lovely intentions, and the boxes are beautiful, but I would find a different way to pixie dust people with them. (Maybe someone at a table near you at dinner, or someone your kids meet in the club, or someone you had fun on a shared excursion)

I’m a bit shocked as well at all the negativity. It took a lot of work and thought for the OP to do this and folks are not only raining on their parade but storming on it!!! I for one think it’s awesome nor do I think it should be for only those doing the fish extender things as that’s limiting, and I’d bet the one who suggested it is part of that group. I say unless DCL has a problem with it., you do what you wanted to do and know that you’ve created a special memory for someone. Folks need to learn that life isn’t about conforming but being you! So be YOU and stick to your plan. Life isn’t about “jumping someone else’s train” so to speak. Kudos to you for your thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity you are attempting to share with others.

also just because someone spent a lot of money on this cruise (as we all do on DCL), doesn’t mean you Can’t have fun. people need to bloody relax! Get off peoples back and stop the negativity.

Good job! Regardless of what you ultimately decide!!

I'm also a bit baffled by the responses. I know it's possible that cleaning up, CMs may pick up boxes and take them to guest services or such, but I know on our cruise, somebody hid tons of little ducks to be found, and it was fun watching the kids find them (and either keep or re-hide them). Unless the treasure chests are especially large, I imagine it would fine.

Initially thought this was a lovely idea...and I still do. My two concerns are crew members picking them up and your efforts wasted and are the items in the chest choking hazards for very young kids? As a non parent I often see dangers that arent really dangerous in practice and dont think about things that really are dangerous so take my input with that in mind.

I love the duck idea, I might even steal that idea sometime! If you havent heard of The Kindness Rocks project, its worth a google.

I would have an expectation that DCL runs the treasure hunt if I were to find one of your chest, and would be pretty angry if I were to discover this isn't the case.
Why would you be pretty angry that DCL isnt running this? I understand flat out thinking its a bad idea for some of the reasons outlined by others but that would be regardless of who runs this.

As one of those who said the fish extender route might be best....no...I am not part of one of those groups nor have I ever been.

I think the Op has the absolute best intentions and I don’t believe anyone is being negative or “storming” on their idea. More thinking of the hard work of the OP. I for one think it’s a great idea, and very thoughtful and generous. However, I see the crew members finding them and removing them. Then their work is for nothing.

If you do it and Disney doesn’t mind, then magical times for those who find one 😊
