DW and I are planning a trip to HHI later this year. We've been there before, but this time we are going to be focusing more on golf. We will have a car so transportation shouldn't be an issue. We're not great golfers, but we aren't total hacks either.

I'm looking for golf course recommendations (both on and off island). We aren't looking to spend big bucks on golf, but at the same time could ante up the money if it's a good value. We golfed HH National last time and that was a great course. I thought is was a little expensive, but that was worth the money.

Does anyone have any golf course recommendations? Ideally we could find a couple of courses that are nice, but priced reasonably. Does anyone have any 'must do' courses when you visit?

Any other HHI golf tips would be appreciated as well. Are there any DVC golf discounts?

The courses at Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes are al good courses. Although the cost is similar to HH National.

DH golfs every time we go to HHI, actually multiple times, and he says that Hilton Head National is the "best buy" golf course-most reasonable and in great condition. So don't expect much cheaper and good! There are DVC golf discounts if you let the resort do your booking. At the 3 courses at Palmetto Dunes, you get the same discount booking yourself-just tell them where you're staying. Forget any of the courses in Sea Pines, not just Harbourtown-they're all overpriced and not too great. DH likes the Port Royal courses. Unfortunately, he's not home now or I'd have more info. In Palmetto Dunes, watch out for the Fazio Course-if you're a good golfer, it's OK, but it can be frustrating for a beginner. I watched someone pick up their ball and quit because of the elevated holes surrounded by sand traps. As I said, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better value than Hilton Head National.

Agree with most of what you are saying but Sea Pines? You have to be kidding me. Do you realize that Harbor Town has been a regular stop for the PGA? They must be looking for a better value otherwise I can't imagine why they would play there.

It's been a while, but we did get a DVC discount and a shuttle to and from when we played the Palmetto course. I believe we played the Trent Jones Course. Wasn't too difficult.

Just returned from HH (non-DVC visit).

Played Dolphin Head (on HH) and Island West, Eagle Pointe, and Rose Hill (in Bluffton). Dolphin Head and Eagle Pointe were very nice courses and would play them again. I wouldn't bother with the other two as their condition was pretty rough (although the green fees reflected their issues).

We played Dolphin Head in the afternoon and the rate was $49 for 18 holes with cart. Played Eagle Pointe in the morning and rate was $62 for 18 holes with cart.

I use GolfNow to review and reserve tee times. You can get some good deals and find out what course has availability.

Playing on the island can be expensive, especially if you play in the morning. Better deals in the afternoon with twi-light rates.

There is lots of golf, so you can pretty much pay as little or as much as you want.

You can also call the courses and see about package deals where you can play one course on the island and others just off the island.

Thanks for all the great information. Eagle Pointe and Dolphin Head look to be great deals. Exactly what I was looking for. Thx

Happy to help...All the courses we played were managed by Brown Golf (I believe). If you go to their web site, you can find a package deal for playing multiple rounds that they manage.

I think they had an option for one course on the island (Dolphin Head) and two courses off the island (Eagle Pointe, Rose Hill, Island West, etc).

Again, would NOT play Island West as the condition was bad. Rose Hill was just OK, greens were sanded and looks like they are trying to fix it. Eagle Pointe was very nice and it was my favorite course we played.

I tend not to play expensive courses during the winter, given I live in Minnesota and haven't played for a couple of months.

If I was down there in the fall, when my game is in shape, I would play Harbor Town and the better courses.
