Help: Taking advantage of pass holder benefits

I need to learn the ropes on how to take advantage of lodging discounts for season pass holders. Do I get the best price by calling the hotel and saying I'm a passholder or should I go through a 3rd party? Am I ever going to see a rate lower than a pass holder rate on orbitz and the like?

We usually travel w/in 30 days. With DH's work schedule we don't have the luxury of planning further ahead. Does that effect our rates?
