Help! I'm scared to fly! Would you ever cancel a wdw trip bec. of that?

I am terrified of flying - have flown before, but as other people have posted, my fear just gets worse the older I get (BTW, I also have this fear of elevators). I will NOT fly. Our vacations are planned to destinations to which we can drive. I KNOW it is an irrational fear, I KNOW I am safer in an airplane than in a car, I KNOW that when it's my time to go it's my time to go - none of that helps. I tried having a drink - that made me a tipsy scared person. I tried Valium - that made me a sleepy scared person. To all who have conquered their fear - HOORAY! I just don't see that happening with me. The vacation is not worth the anxiety (as a few others have posted here). Driving does not bother me at all (actually, DH drives and I ride!), and I would love to take a train somewhere someday. If I never see Hawaii because they don't build a bridge there - well, I guess that's OK with me. I am lucky to have a DH that is so understanding! My friends all think I'm crazy, but this is just the way I am. People need to understand that you can't control your phobias - when they say, "You just need to get over it!" that really doesn't help. I will be interested to check out that website, tho. It sounds good. Do they have one for elevators?? ;)

BTW, last time I flew was in 1995 - in a prop plane thru Hurricane Opal! That did it for me!

I am also afraid to fly----I can do it, but I like to avoid it as much as possible. I just finished booking a trip to Disneyland Paris earlier this afternoon, so I guess I'll have to talk to my Dr. about Xanax........

Wow!! I'm really not alone in this, although my situation may be a bit different! I am 40 and have NEVER flown!! (unless you count the time my Mom flew while preggers with me)

Anyway, I can't even fathom getting on a plane!! We had to go on an airport field trip when I was nine and they made us tour a 747!!! I was horrified! I was so afraid they'd make us fly, I almost freaked out!! I don't know what's worse: being trapped, out of control, hi-jacked, crashing....it's all bad! The odd thing is that I'm a really optimistic, spiritual person. It's like all my anxieties are bundled into the flying thing and some claustrophobia.

That being said...I do love to travel!!!!:sunny: I live in So. CA and have been to all but 9 States (up side to road tripping) and Western Canada (B.C)! We took the train (and driven) to New York & Albuquerque (that was business). We've been all over FL (incl. Key West) & WDW 6 times (7th coming in Oct.). Thanks to Disney Cruises, we've been to the Bahamas, Cozumel, St. Maarten, St.Thomas & Grand Cayman. Plus, in March, we cruised to Hawaii, stayed for 2 weeks then cruised back!!

Yes, flying would be faster but I tell people we like to travel the old fashioned way....when the journey was the adventure! Plus, you get to see so much and meet so many different people! Also, DH likes the driving time to get out of his work mind-set and into "vacation mode". He says it's much more relaxing! Fortunately, we have been blessed to have the time and $$ to travel the way we want.

Kudos to those of you who feel the fear and do it anyway!!! I never say never, but I'm sooooo not there yet!!!

:(

Count me in too. Ever since 9/11 I will not fly. We went to WDW and we drove and it took us one way 23 hours. I have flown twice before 9/11 and was a little nervouse both times. I was better when I sat at the window seat and could see outside, but I also have a fear of heights. When I'am up high I have to get down fast, the easiest ways. Weither that means over railings or jumping. Now my DH wants to go to Vegas and I can't get on the plane. I likely will never get this out of my mind until things get better with the terrorism. :(
