Healthy Living from the INSIDE OUT - May 2016 WISH Challenge

Most of the people on this thread are losing weight by making healthy eating choices, increasing activity, and trying to find ways to sustain these habits for life. What non-scale benefits have you gotten from cleaning up your diet and moving a bit (or a lot more)? Is it all about the weight loss or would you still keep up your healthy habits if you never lost another pound?

No, not at all

My skin is so much better in 4 weeks. I can't get over how clear it is!
I am less hungry (believe it or not!) throughout the day

Sorry to have missed woohoo Wednesday yesterday. I had a heartbreaking day and just couldn't get up enough spirit to share my woohoos or in any of yours. Yay to all the Happys!!!!!

Sending a big hug!!

For me the biggest non-scale benefits that I have gotten so much fitter. I used to be the person who would pick the shorted walking route, the least steep path, I would take escalators and elevators whenever I found them. Running regularly has increased my cardio vascular fitness a lot and I don't puff when I need to climb to the fourth floor. This is something that I definitely would want to keep and work hard for!

QOTD - May 5

There was a lot of discussion yesterday about a certain New York Times article on the recedivism of Biggest Loser contestants. On one hand, we all know that the BL folks are losing weight in the most extreme way possible. On the other hand, it is scary and sobering for those of with a lot of weight to lose (or lost).

Hugs to you!!! I hope that today will be a better day!

I am thinking (hoping) that I stick with it. This week life happened and i have not been able to work yet. It has bothered me that I haven't been able to. I miss my workouts. It is quite time just with me, even though I am at the rec with many other people. They are just not calling Mom every 5 seconds, hanging on me or fighting. I love my kids but this hour to myself has been great and I feel I am having more patience with the kids.

Lately I have been reading a lot about the BL. I have been a fan of the show since about the time it started. After everything I have read I don't think I like it anymore. I always knew it was an extreme way of losing weight but how they do it over the top. I read an article that said they only eat like 500 to 1000 calories a day or something ridicules like that. They also threaten them to do what production wants to do. If they resist they make things really hard for them. 1 or 2 have come forward and said they ended up with an eating disorder from being on the show.

But despite that article, I know that one of the PREVAILING themes here on the WISH challenges has been to NEVER GIVE UP. And so that is what I am going to say.... I will NEVER give up fighting to stay at a healthy weight. It is worth EVERY dirty measuring spoon, every skipped birthday cupcake, every minute of exercise, every WW meeting, every page of food tracking. There was NOTHING I really liked about myself when I was overweight (despite much of it having nothing to do with my weight). Losing the weight TRULY changed my life. No other way to put it. And even if I NEVER lose these pesky 7 pounds that I'd like to lose, I'm SO CONTENT at this weight! There was a time in my life I couldn't EVER, EVER imagine living for years in the 130's..... getting under 200 seemed like a herculean effort. So YES, I will take those stupid 7 pounds and learn to deal with them if they hang around. And I will NEVER GIVE UP the effort to stay at a healthy weight.

Amen to all this!!! I really didn't think I was that bad (until I saw some picture of me creeping on up to 195 lb department....), but now just 14 lbs gone and I have so much confidence back! Not enough, but I can't imagine how I awesomely confident will feel at goal weight! The feeling of looking at pictures from this past trip without wanting to go hide under a rock is worth alllllllll the gin and tonics I refused at the in-laws and broccoli substitutions at restaurants! Now I don't have quite your conviction yet to never give up the effort, but your drive is such an inspiration and this really resonated with me today! :-)

Sorry to have missed woohoo Wednesday yesterday. I had a heartbreaking day and just couldn't get up enough spirit to share my woohoos or in any of yours. Yay to all the Happys!!!!!

So sorry to hear this--- sending hugs your way

Hmmmm this is a tough one. I think one benefit clean eating I LOVE that I would definitely want to maintain is feeling full without feeling gross or having a food hangover in the morning. When I cheat and overeat, I regret it more now than ever before. I also want to keep cooking more and eating out less. DH LOVES eating out, but I am loving cooking together and saving money that I'd rather spend on experiences rather than food!

Non-weight-centric benefits... First just generally feeling better about myself because I'm keeping the commitment I made to myself... Feeling emotionally more powerful and physically stronger. Being able to move better. In pilates this week we did several exercises where I thought just a few months ago I wouldn't have been able to do this and in a few months it will be even easier. Aside from the brief period of breakouts from testing coconut milk, my skin looks and feels really nice. I'm hyper-sensitive about my age at work and I think I've taken off about 10 years, which was mostly stored in my double chin. Another benefit has been in connecting to others on the same journey (meaning you all :)).

WDW countdown continues. Got a lot of little household things done last night, all that's really left is a load of laundry and the floors, also it was a bit damp yesterday so I didn't mow, that'll have to happen tonight after my hair appt.

Keep thinking shopping is done then come up with a few more things to get. Yesterday it was sunscreen for the face, today I'm going to run over to the store at lunch and see if there are any PJs I like.

Getting excited!

Hope you are OK.

But I took some time today and did some more reading and saw some other POV and such and it really made me start thinking differently. This article was based on a study JUST of people who are former BL contestants.... and only a small handful of people at that. I think it is possible that their results aren't representative of people who have lost weight as a whole group. This was just a small sampling of people who lost weight in a very extreme way. I'd like to think that perhaps losing more slowly and not doing such extreme exercise may not have such a negative impact on metabolism.... but who knows

I am hoping that this is the case as well. That they lost SO much SO quickly and would work out for many hours and eat hardly anything. It just seems unhealthy and I feel like that surely had something to do with their results.
 and :cheer2: as someone who also experiences anxiety and can have panic attacks - I know how difficult that can be so that is a GIANT WOOHOO. It is such a great feeling when we can claw back some of that control like you did - proud of you :D

Thank you!! I really appreciate that :)

This is a good question! I think if I never lost a pound I honestly would keep eating the crap food because it tastes so good! I do see lots of non-scale benefits of eating healthier but...idk. If I weighed the same whether I ate a pound of broccoli or a pound of pizza I'm gonna have to go with pizza. Because a lot of my "ailments" I think were directly caused by my weight. So if I was still 55 pounds heavier I'd have to imagine I'd still be sluggish, I'd still have aches and pains and so on.

I think psychologically I feel a lot better about myself. My self confidence has gone up and I like the extra energy. The feeling that I'm accomplishing something that I didn't think I could do has been so much better than any dessert or meal I could ever have. I'm addicted to this new life style!

Non-scale benefits:
  • More energy in daily activities. I can go to Disney all day and not be exhausted. Just in general I'm not exhausted.
  • I'm now a runner. I enjoy running and doing the races I've signed up for
  • Making smarter choices for meals. I love trying new healthy options for food :)

It's now not about weight-loss for me but maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's harder I think now that I'm at a goal weight and I've now gotten a little obsessive about making sure I'm still within my calorie range. I won't eat anywhere I can't track points and I'm scared to go over or eat too much. I just don't want to go back to where I once was. It's been 5 months and so far so good. Pants feel a little loose and shirts are fitting great.

My skin is so much better in 4 weeks. I can't get over how clear it is!

I've noticed this. Clear, bright skin. So great right?

For me the biggest non-scale benefits that I have gotten so much fitter. Same! I feel this exact way - never thought that I'd be a "let's take the stairs" person.

I think psychologically I feel a lot better about myself. My self confidence has gone up and I like the extra energy. The feeling that I'm accomplishing something that I didn't think I could do has been so much better than any dessert or meal I could ever have. I'm addicted to this new life style!

That's the best feeling in the world - know that by looking better you feel better about yourself. And as you continue to lose the pounds you will feel even better. Dessert is almost... something I don't need now. There are few things I won't turn down, such as a Croque Glace or ice cream. But I don't need cake, pie, or other sweets to get through the day.

Ice cream is my weakness. I can't figure out how to say no :(

I saw the prices this morning and could not believe it! In 2014 we paid $66 per person including tax! We were planning on doing the party again since we loved it last time, but now we really are not so sure. If you have never done it, I think it will still be fun and definitely put you in the Christmas spirit. For us, who already did it last year, and are also saving up for other expensive vacations, it will most likely not happen...

A non-weight woohoo is that on Tuedsay morning I was a guest speaker (only for 25 minutes ..... but still) at the University I graduated from. I was asked to speak to the first year Occupational Therapy students about my role and the approaches we use in the Education Department before they get a first taste of visiting a Special School for 4 days. I was a little freaked a couple of days before when I found out it was actually in the 2nd biggest lecture theatre on campus - meaning a lot more students than when I was there! So it was one of those surreal full circle moments .... I was one of those 1st year students not so long ago (7 years) sounds longer than it feels haha. I got some great feedback from the lecturer and there may be some more opportunities she wants to explore.

That's a pretty exciting WooHoo! It's pretty special to be asked to share a bit of what you do with the students who could become the future of your profession.

Love this pic Sarah! My DS15 really wants to visit NY and so do I - we are hoping for another US trip in a few years when he graduates high school - it just costs so much though - so hoping we can make it happen.

Thanks! I definitely get the cost issues (I've only "traveled" internationally twice - once was Canada, and we drove, and the other trip was a family thing that my grandparents paid for part of our trip). But if you can make it to NY, there's definitely some cool stuff to do here. And if you're running around doing the tourist stuff all day, sitting in Central Park is a nice, peaceful way to relax at the end of the day.

I hope you get a chance to have WooHoo Thursday today!

What non-scale benefits have you gotten from cleaning up your diet and moving a bit (or a lot more)? Is it all about the weight loss or would you still keep up your healthy habits if you never lost another pound?

Awesome question - gave me a bit to think about!
I think my knee pain has gotten better from my increased activity levels, and while I still do have knee pain sometimes, now it's more related to my activity level and not something that just randomly happens (I used to wake up with knee pain - that doesn't really happen any more).
I also feel better about my decisions when I make healthy choices. I'm someone who tends to automatically assume that I did something wrong, and if I'm eating right, then I know I'm doing something right, which is a nice little confidence booster for me.
So even if I never lose weight again (which does seem like it's happening sometimes), I'd like to think that I would try to maintain these habits just to feel better about myself!

Lately I have been reading a lot about the BL. I have been a fan of the show since about the time it started. After everything I have read I don't think I like it anymore. In theory, I like the idea of the Biggest Loser, because it's trying to motivate people to take care of their health.
The problem is, the things that make a good TV show often make a terrible lifestyle change. And since TV is about the ratings ... they're more concerned with getting people to watch than with helping the contestants make sustainable change. It's sad, but unfortunately that's how it works sometimes.

We purchased the tickets for the Mickey Christmas Party today - $95 per person. OUCH! I hope that the character meet-n-greets and Elsa's Holiday nonsense are worth it :)

Yeah ... this pricing is getting rough! Hopefully it will be worth it!

Hey guys!
Quick check in for me ... I am so behind schedule today! Hopefully I can get some stuff done over the next few hours and come back and tell y'all about my day later.

We have never done it before and opted to skip the Disneyland Halloween Party to attend this one instead. I'm assuming that the Disneyland Halloween Parties will be similar in pricing to their Florida counterpart -- so we wanted to just try something new.

Our AP will have the photo pass download privileges this time, as when we renewed we were on the "old version" of our pass and missed out on that benefit. Character interactions and watching the shows are really what it's about for us!

Busy busy but things are going great. Tracking all consistent still and gym workouts. I got in 70 minutes of walking on the treadmill. I have a goal to reach 50 miles of walking in May. I'm at 7.5 so far. I'm anxious but also a little scared to see what weigh in is like tomorrow morning.

I will try to catch up this evening.

Most of the people on this thread are losing weight by making healthy eating choices, increasing activity, and trying to find ways to sustain these habits for life. I loved reading everyone's thoughts on this question of the day. I read the article and it was just so depressing and sad. Although I can't say it was surprising. Seems pretty logical to me.

Would I keep up my healthy habits if I never lost another pound? Well, keeping in mind that I have lost quite a few pounds, I think I would keep up my habits if it kept me exactly where I am now. It took awhile for me to really notice the increased energy, greater productivity; better skin and hair and better mood. So, if you asked me this same question 9 months ago, I probably would have answered it differently.

But, as of today - yes! But that's because these days, when I overdo it on food, I feel really sick and overly full and yucky. It's not as "joyful" (to keep with the theme) as it used to be. We went to a Sunday brunch buffet two weeks ago and I totally overdid it. And I overdid it for the wrong reasons (because it was a lot of money per person and I thought, I can't spend all this money on just French Toast and Sausage, so even though I was full, I went back and got a second plate of food) and definitely paid for it as I felt that meal like a rock in my stomach the entire day. It was such a waste.

I was never a fan of the biggest loser. This study and the discussion around it is sort of why. I think it creates unrealistic expectations and sets people up to fail.

I definitely feel like I have had many non-scale benefits from cleaning up my diet and becoming a frequent exerciser.

1) I feel so much healthier and have tons more energy. My favorite example of this is post Princess Half Marathon 2014, my first half. I had been up three mornings in a row around 3 AM. I had watched the 5k, and run the 10k and the half marathon. After the half, I returned to my hotel for a quick shower and change. Then, since taking the monorail from the contemporary can take a while with the 3 stops (midday they stop a long time at each stop sometimes) I opted to walk from the Bay Lake Tower to the park, since that only takes 10 minutes. I joined my family who had gone straight to MK after watching me finish. We did MK the rest of the morning and then had lunch. After lunch, my daughter wanted to stay at the park for a few more rides, while everyone else was too tired to stay. So who stayed? I did. We rode barnstormer, dumbo and the carousel and had a mickey bar:) It was great. Prior to my new exercise habit, I too would have preferred to go back for some relaxing pool time, but I had the energy after the quick lunch break to keep going. In full disclosure, I did take a nap from 3:30 to 4:30 prior to my celebration dinner at CA Grill:)

2) Stress relief. By strange coincidence I started cleaning up my diet and working out the fall of 2010. That December my father was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. If hadn't developed those healthy habits in the 3 months prior, I have no doubt I would have gained 20 pounds during that winter, instead of losing my final 10. It was a long complicated task getting him diagnosed and deciding (after a second opinion) on a treatment plan. I would have had an Oreo in one hand and pint of ice cream in the other at all times most likely. But, instead, I got up early and went to 545 am spin classes 2-3 times a week, and hit the gym a couple more times each week. That was my stress relief. A few years later I had my own cancer scare (false positive) and the same thing. It took about a month and a lot of different imaging and lab tests to know for sure, and exercise was my stress relief.

As for the last part, would I keep up my weight loss habits if I never lost another pound? Absolutely. I already am. I have been stuck at the same weight (135ish) for almost year now. A year ago I had a surgery that meant no exercise at all for 6 weeks due to post-op restrictions. I gained 10 pounds in that 6 weeks. I was a doctor ordered couch potato. I have returned to my exercise habits, but the scale is not budging. I am not technically overweight, but I am heavier by weight than I want to be. But I am sticking with it. I am not giving up just because the scale is not responding. Memorial Day weekend will be one year since I was cleared to exercise again. Unless a miracle happens, my goal of getting those 10 pounds off by then is not going to happen (7 to go). But, I will live with it. I know I am still in a great place health wise. Since I am now training for a marathon I am ramping up my exercise, and working on really cleaning up my diet even more. Hopefully I will start to see a little more scale movement. I keep seeing a pound or two go down, but then they pop right back on. Not a ton of rhyme or reason, which is why my whole focus is on tracking my food this month.

Yes... The feeling crappy afterwards is a huge motivator. I'll be clinging to that while on vacation... Need to feel my best to have the stamina to do everything I want.

Yes me, too (vacation is still over 30 days away), but I need to make sure that I don't get off on the wrong foot each morning in the cruise buffet. I love breakfast food and the urge to load up my plate will be strong!

@DVCFan1994 -- Congratulations for keeping in the 135ish range for the last year.

Your story inspires me and I want to keep being able to move and groove after completing the races I've signed up for. After some of these half marathons I find that I'm walking like a baby giraffe. Any recommendations on how to get over that 'awkward walk' phase?

So many really great responses to today's QOTD! I really enjoyed reading about how much you are all learning about how much better you feel when you start getting healthier! And it is SO GREAT to have an energy level to keep up with your kids, grandkids, and to KEEP GOING when others are too tired! I have a pretty high energy level and I LOVE it!

Rough day at work today with my student, but I refuse to give into the overwhelming desire for COMFORT eating. Love my student and wish I could help her more, but it is NOT worth going off the rails!

Of course, the fact that it is ANOTHER rainy, grey, raw, cold day doesn't help either! I just want to snuggle under a quilt with my fuzzy socks on while I drink hot chocolate! Instead I have a warm cat by my feet, a hot laptop in my lap, and a cup of unsweetened decaf green tea by my side...... close enough! Men are out at robotics tonight so I didn't put dinner in the crockpot today.... I'll just warm up some leftovers for myself. Easy-peasy! Okay.... off to move the laundry along, continue my chat shift, and warm up some dinner! TTYL.................P
