Princess Vija, it is nice that you are finding some good ways to spend your time with one less child!
I know my DH has been enjoying the "spontaneity"!
I hope all your Family Weekends are happy and filled with great times together with your children. The one and only Family Weekend that we attended, Freshman year for our eldest, was pretty much spent at the hotel's pool and feeding her! It was a great one for us, and fit our family perfectly! DD came home for all the rest.
This is Family Weekend for my youngest, and what did she do? She drove home, all by herself. Or at least, she drove about an hour from home (it is total of a 4 hour drive, longest she has ever done, and BY HERSELF!!!), and my DH and I met her at a gas station in a little farm town and I drove her in my car, he drove her car. DD asked if we would bring our German Shepherds, so I did, and I am pretty sure the greeting from the dogs made her almost as happy as the greeting she received from her cat when she came home. Nothing like 2 Shepherds, one an almost 100 pound puppy, jumping on you with big tongues flapping everywhere to make you feel welcome!
DD is still sleeping, with her cat by her side. This is the first time she is home since she started school that her older sister did not decide to also drive home, and so it is just like the last 4 years again of only having my youngest at home. I got used to eldest DD being gone, so when she leaves for her life I still miss her, but my heart isn't hurting, you know? When DD leaves on Sunday, it will be hard, because my reality of the last 4 years will be shaken again. And it doesn't help that I worry about her on that long drive!
DD has asked if we could drive her an hour and a half, then let her drive the rest of the way back to school, because she finds that the drive back is the hardest and most tiring. Of course we said yes, because we are such sappy parents that the thought of our baby being with us another few hours makes us happy. And, at least for an hour and half, I won't worry about her little car mixed in with all the big trucks!
Why on earth do both my DDs need little tiny cars? Don't they know how many fewer grey hairs I would have if only they drove tanks?
It's funny, I started the year telling DD that, while she could take her car to school, she was not to drive it home the first part of Freshman year, and when she did drive it home the spring semester, she was to always have a passenger. That didn't last long! Oh how I change my tune when my DD wants to come home.
I also watched The Middle, and kept thinking, "oh, I am so glad I have girls!" Though I completely identified with Frankie wanting to have her iconic moment, I just wanted to slap Axl across the face and tell him to appreciate his parents more!
Do kids really talk like that to their parents? I mean, I love the show, and there are so many times I that I am quite sure someone has been spying on my family
, and Sue Heck is so like my eldest, but I just want to smack that boy sometimes!
Have a great weekend everyone, the weather here in the Chicago area is beautiful, hope it is pleasant for the rest of you!
