Have your gas prices risen yet because of Katrina?

I paid $2.74 this morning and it was $3.39 on my way home from work today.

As of last night many places were up to 2.75 for regular unleaded, and the places that hadn't risen in price were out of regular unleaded. :guilty:

On the way to work this morning at 7am gas was $2.59. On the way home at 4pm, it was $2.79!!

A friend/coworker told me her dad just called her & said gas was up to $4 a gallon in Atlanta. Anyone else hear this?

Im in Athens,Ga and word is the gas is going to be cut off today. One of the feeder lines that give Ga 75% of its fuel is messed up and we cant get it. I got some gas monday, for 2.69, but I only got a little less than half a tank. Luckily, I live on campus and can take the UGA bus pretty much everywhere I need to go. Ill only have to leave if I need something from an actual store. I should be able to make it without going though. Not saying this is important when compared to the rest of the country right now- but we have our first game this weekend. Anyone from the south, atleast, knows how big Georgia football is. 60,000 people come up all weekend and tailgate and such, this weekend will be interesting I guess.
I'm watching the news for the first time in a day or so (im in college, give me a break ;) ) and Im just in awe of the devistation. It makes me want to go down there and try to help myself. I feel so worthless here, being sad that I cant go visit a friend at Mercer this weekend! I hope we get things under control at some point. :(

ETA: My boyfriend is living in lawrenceville, ga and working in Roswell. (he's doing a co-op through Ga Tech and living with his grandparents to save money) His commute is almost two hours to and from every day, depending on traffic. He has a little 05 honda civic, but he still is having to fill up almost twice a week. Thats insane! I bet with the recent conditions, he will be able to get a hotel for a week and stay in roswell for what he is spending on gas! I havent talked to him today, but i saw pictures of atl and there is like no one on the roads. This is crazy!

We lived north of atlanta well my husband still does and I am in Florida now.He just called and said he may not be coming sunday because everywhere by him they will not sell gas. He doesnt know if they are out or not selling but he cannot find. He also said the lowest price near where he is ..is 3.50 a gallon

I was out running errands and saw several stations on one road near the interstate at $2.99 a gal. for reg. On the way to the grocery, I saw 3 stations at an intersection with $2.79 a gal. I went home for about 2 hours, switched cars to gas up the one that was low--when I got to the station, reg. had gone up to $2.99 a gal. A $0.20 increase in 2 hours!

It seems unreal that places can run out of gas! I don't know what I would do? I live out in the country so I would have to travel 8 miles to reach any sort of public transportation and then would not be able to be at work on time and would have to leave early to catch the bus back home. Do any of you have contingency plans if your area runs out of gas? I honestly can't think of alternatives to driving for me. :confused3

$3.19 in Lincoln, NE. This is up from around $2.75 yesterday, and an average of $2.60 a week ago.

I cannot fault the station owners. This is supply and demand and that is what you get in a capitalistic society. However, I can't imagine how the lower-class, let alone middle-class, is going to deal with this!

The Triangle Business Journal in the capital region of North Carolina reported some stations hiked prices by a whopping 40 cents a gallon from Tuesday to Wednesday. Prices there ballooned from about $2.50 a gallon to nearly $3 a gallon. And supplies are running short. "We are almost out of gas," said the owner of The Food Mart #9 in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. "We don't know if we'll get gas this afternoon or next week. It's a bad situation."

That may explain why they are hiking prices...might as well make more of a profit now, because who knows if they will run out...

I work for one of the companies listed below and currently our biggest concern is the saftey of our fellow employees and their families. Our company is donating $ 2 million to the Red Cross and is offering continued pay and assistance to affected employees. Right now our biggest problem is getting in touch with the workers and trying to get people back into the refineries to assess damage. Much of the gas provided to the Southeast comes from Louisiana via pipeline and to other places via barges. We do not know the condition of the pipelines and barge traffic is non exsistant. Traded prices for RUL gas at 3:00 PM for pipeline delivered fuel was $2.84 if you could get it. Add roughly .40 cents in taxes and you are at $3.24 a gallon plus station profit which means in the $3.30 plus range. The Government has lifted EPA regulations on fuel blends in order to help increase production but unfortunately the Gulf Coast and Southeast will suffer more due to shortages from the plants listed below.

Refinery Conditions Still Being Studied
Aug 31, 2005 1:24PM [AP Online]

Eight Gulf of Mexico refineries remain shut and one is operating at a reduced rate while damage from Hurricane Katrina continues to be assessed by oil and gas companies.

Access to some of the refineries is difficult. Conditions at those locations are as follows:

_ Baton Rouge, La. - At nearly 394,000 barrels a day, one of the gulf's largest refinery owned by Exxon Mobil Corp. is running at a reduced capacity.

_ Pascagoula, Miss. - Chevron Corp.'s 325,000 barrel a day refinery remains shut. The company says access to the refinery remains difficult.

_ Norco, La. - Valero Energy Corp.'s St. Charles refinery is not likely to resume its 260,000 barrel a day operations for up to two weeks.

_ Garyville, La. - Marathon Oil Corp.'s 245,000 barrel a day refinery remains shut. Access is limited.

_ Belle Chasse, La. - ConocoPhillips' Alliance refinery remains shut while the company continues to assess damage to the 255,000 barrel a day facility.

_ Convent, La. -- Motiva Enterprises's 255,000 barrel a day facility sustained minimal damage.

_ Norco, La. - Access to Motiva Enterprises's 242,000 barrel a day refinery is limited, so damage still is being assessed.

_ Chalmette, La. - Exxon Mobil has not been able to visit the 183,000 barrel a day refinery, which shut down on Sunday.

_ Meraux, La. - The 125,000 barrel a day facility by Murphy Oil Corp. remains shut down as access remains limited.

Thanks for the information.

I have a question though, when you say "traded prices" are you talking about FUTURE deliveries of gasoline? The gas that is currently at the stations...is that gas paid for? If so, why would they raise the prices on this gas?

Well our whole county will be out of gas by tomorrow. The city I live in already is out of gas. I topped my car off at $2.59 today. The gentletman that owns the gas station did not raise his prices like so many of them did. I waited in line for 10 minutes to get gas. But, even though I am concerned about how we are going to make it, I am still so sorry for the people who have lost everything.

Traditionally, retailers match every penny of price move up as it happens, therefore they are getting the benifit of their cheaper inventory in the ground while when prices are falling they delay the reduction in price as long as they can and only lower prices when a station in their area steps out and lowers theirs. Traditionally its during this time of delaying the price drops that the retail stations make the majority of their profits.

Yesterday, Gas was $2.68 last I checked.

This morning, while driving to work at 5:00 am, I passed a few Gas Stations that had Regular Gas for $2.99.

On the way home, at 4:00 pm, those same Gas Stations had it for $3.19 - $3.24

There is a station in the town I live in that ran out of gas yesterday. Prices here are now at $3.18. :sad1:
