OK, so life happened and I have to sell my membership. Do I need to go through Disney to sell or are there reputable places out there that are familiar with resale of DVC memberships?

You can sell it on your own, but you have to accomodate Disney's right of first refusal. You can contract with a broker to sell it for you, which will set you back about 8%-10% of the sales price. You cannot "go through Disney." They will not make you any sort of offer.

I am currently selling a contract through DVC Resale Market ( www.dvcresalemarket.com ) and they have been great to work with -- good communication every step of the way and a lower sales commission compared to some of the other brokers. They are offering an 8% sales commission vs the normal 10%, at least through the end of October. They were very helpful with things like figuring out my listing price. This is my first experience selling a contract so I appreciate their detailed communications as I go through the process.

I have purchased through The Timeshare Store and had a good experience with them as a buyer.

I and many others have bought and/or sold through The Timeshare Store, longtime sponsor of the DIS DVC boards. I've done a total of 5 transactions with them, and they've been great to work with.

Thank you so much for those replies. It helps me a lot. Can you give me an estimated time frame on how many months it took from start to close?

That depends on how quickly the contract sells, but average time has been running roughly 3 months. We put an offer in 8/9/15 and we closed on 10/20/15, so 2.5 months until the buyer would have received payment.

As a buyer, I have dealt with all except Fidelity & DVC Magic Resales (no specific reason) for either a completed purchase or to make an offer. The Timeshare Store is the absolute best. Very professional, excellent communication, and quickly present your offer (if you offer less than asking). I have dealt with Jason, Jamie, & Scot there. They have all been wonderful. Highly recommend.
