Has anyone actually witnessed cars being towed from a resort lot???

Great thread :lmao: ....

ummmm.....I speak for the Valets here....

current Valet parking rate is $7 but, they depend on you tipping them @ least a $1 each way!

Think of it as insurance;) .

Thank you for posting this. DH and I have debated this point for several years (he thinks the tip should only be given when the car is picked up, but I say both ways). That settles it.

Actually, it doesn't. There are some bell staff (not Disney) who have a web site saying that you need to tip $3 per bag minimum. They're not unbiased sources of information. Rather, ASTA, the American Society of Travel Agents, is an unbiased source. They confirm that it is appropriate to tip after the service is rendered. Since the service including storing your vehicle and returning it to you in the sam condition it was left, it is appropriate to tip on pick-up only, if you prefer. Of course, the appropriate tip would be $2 in that case.

We have never stayed offsite and used resort parking, it's one of those ...it's wrong, I know it. A few people's quest to is to take advantage of all and anything, then spoil it for the rest. Getting one up on the mouse doesn't do much for usl. We do park at the resorts when we go to eat. We always have a resort ID in car window, state the name of restaurant to the guard. Sometimes we have had 3 hour passes, 6 hour passes and no passes. We have self-parked, valet, etc. We have seen cars towed, turned away from resort by gate guard. By the way.......we spend 4-6 weeks a year on Disney property.

I've read anywhere from $1 to $3/bag suggested, we usually give them $10 for 3 or 4 bags.

I truly suggest a minimum of $1 when dropping off the car & $1 when picking it up. I asked if the WDW valet attendants share their tips, I was told no...I do consider the initial tip a gesture of goodwill.

Valets will emphasize that they don't share tips, yet they don't readily follow that up with the fact that they're rotated through drop-offs and pick-ups, so every valet has the same opportunity to do pick-ups.

I just think it's weird that saving $7 is that big of a deal to people who are most likely already paying $200 + a night for a hotel room...

Well think about it. These same people reuse a $12 mug! I can't see spending over $5000 on a hotel room and trying to save $7 or $12 for that matter.

I have NEVER seen a car being towed at WDW.

Lots of people on these boards tip at drop-off. Although it is very nice, and I'm sure the valet guys love it, it isn't expected. Nobody will think you are a cheapskate or anything. It is customary to tip when picking up the car only.

BTW, of all the WDW hotels, the Beach Club always has the fastest and friendliest valet guys.

AMEN!

I was raised to stretch a dollar, not afraid to spend money but, hate to waste it unnecessarily.

Consider it a hobby trying to get the best bang for my buck on vacation (and in the real world)...different strokes, etc. I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself if I hadn't tried to get the best value.

Besides...$7 day for 10 days is $70 dollars (that's alot of :mickeybar 's...& 1/3 of the $200 night for a room you quote.

So was I. I could tell you stories about my mother. :)

It was very difficult to come to understand the negative impact on society from many things my parents taught me. While there is nothing wrong with making personal choices among the offerings actually made, so as to optimize my enjoyment of what I purchase with my money, there is a limit, and this case is one of them. Folks are clearly supposed to pay for parking at the theme parks, unless they're Disney resort guests. While my up-bringing would tempt me to find ways around that, what I've learned as an adult has helped me understand why that's not an appropriate choice.

I think people do it for the convenience, not to save the cash. It is a pain to get the tram then the monorail/ferryboat at MK, especially with a stroller to fold, kids and bags to hold etc. The resort monorail is quicker and easier.

We do not park at the resorts for park access, but I can see why people try their luck. I think the towing is necessary and appropriate if people abuse the 3 hour passes. We drive to all the parks except MK where it is easier to get the resort bus.

I don't want to "think of it as insurance". I want to tip for a service I appreciate. Thats what tipping is to me, a small token of my appreciation for a service provided to make things easier for me. I don't want to feel blackmailed by valets who won't take good care of me or my car if I don't kick down. That just makes me mad :furious:

Taking my car to the parking lot, so that I don't have to comes under that heading for me. As does bringing it back to me! :sunny:

I don't think there is any limit on valet at all. Last year, I was staying one night at BWV and 3 nights at All-Stars. I pulled up to BWV to check in and the valet took my car and Bell Services took my luggage. I never went back to the valet to give them my parking thingy I got at check-in.

When I transferred to All-Stars, I had Bell Services move my luggage for me and I didn't bother picking up my car.

On my last day, I had All-Stars luggage service pick up my bags after I left the room and I used Disney transport and enjoyed the parks and Pleasure Island. When it was time to head home, I took a bus to BWV to pick up my car and since I have a handicapped tag, there was no charge for the 5 days it was there. I then drove back over to All-Stars, picked up my luggage from Luggage Assistance and headed off property. (I actually had a bit of trouble getting past the All-Stars gate as I didn't get an All-Stars parking thingy because my car was over at BWV valet. Also,my resort ID said I had checked out the day before, which was true, because it was 1:30 am the next morning, after HOOPLA!! at Adventurer's Club).

That's only if you are using their services. Woe is you if you try to park in the circle for more than 60 seconds to unload your luggage at a semi-busy time; then it's "valet it or move it"!

I think it depends what perspective you look @ it from...the valet personnel is in the service industry, most rely on their tips to eat.

In another lifetime, I had to moonlight & counted on receiving tips for a job well done (at least I'd like to think so!)...can't imagine anyone working that type of job for pure joy or satisfaction.

I'd never use the valets for park-parking (sounds strange?) but, do use it when I check in @ DVC resorts. BTW, we get it "free" but, make sure we tip for drop off & retrieval, especially if it's raining, etc.

Like all tipping, it's a personal decision - gratuities are just suggested; unless automatically added to your check.

I absolutly agree with you - 100%. What I get angry about are valets with the attitude that I HAVE TO TIP (which I always do because I do appreciate the service) or they will not treat me or my property well. They are paid a base pay to do their jobs. If I don't tip (which I never do) then they should provide a base service. I should not have to worry about whether the valet drove too fast, or through a mud puddle on purpose, or even parked a little too close to another car causing door dings. The statement "think of it as insurance" made me think that the valets that are not tipped are purposfully not careful with cars. That was my concern.

So you were raised to stretch a dollar yet see nothing wrong with saying everyone should be tipping valet both ways? Don't get me wrong. I tip $3-5 both ways. I also tip $20 to the bellman, $5 a day to the maids, and tip well every where else. What I will never do it take something that isn't entitled to me no matter how one quantifies it. Parking in a resort you aren't a guest of is just plain wrong. My mom raised me better then that.
