click on Voldemort!
Too cool!!! I have to say, that is my favorite one! But, be sure to click it two more times and hear what happens!

I am glad to know how to pronounce Merope (I imagined it different), Scrimgeour and some other names. I found that I was a bit off on the pronunciation of some of the other words.

I think some of the pronunciations vary, though.

In the movie they pronounce it voldemort, and in the guide they pronounce it voldemore....

The guide's pronunciation (no "t") is the correct one.

Agreed. I think I'll stick with the "t", though, because I like the movie's pronunciation better. And, if JK allows that pronunciation in the movies, it can't be that bad.

Yes, and also, in the "Books on CD" they pronounce it with the "t" too... my dad just finished listening to OotP (he's a little behind), and he told me the pronounciation.
The man who reads it does an excellent job. Was he the one on the Today Show just before HBP came out?

That would be Jim Dale. He does a fantastic job!! I enjoy listening to the books on CD as much as I do reading the books!

I bought Jim Dale's readings of GoF and OOtP for a road trip to Florida this past June and loved them. In fact, I think the reason I was able to drive back in one shot was because Dale made the story easy to focus on, even though I was so familiar with it already - I stayed engaged in the story and didn't think about the time or how far I'd driven. I hadn't finished OOtP when I'd arrived home, so I played it while I painted three rooms of the house as well!

I have all of the books, After I read them, I buy the books on tape. Jim Dale has an excelent voice, and I love having a story read to me when I go to bed at night. I will put in a CD, and play it. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I find the track that I remember as the last one and start there....DW made me promise not to listen to HBP until she has had a chance to read it. I started the whole series again... I will listen all of the way through...

Good Night all!!!
Magical dreams...

Really? I could have sworn the Jim Dale said it without the "t'" :confused3

Piglet too is correct. I'm listening to the book on CD now and Jim Dale pronounces Voldemort WITHOUT the "t" ... so it sounds like Voldemore.

Is there a way to print this thread???

I just finished reading the book and would love to read this thread now that I am done.

I thought all of us who'd questioned pronunciations would like to know that the HP Pronunciation guide on the Scholastic website has been updated to include various words from Half Blood Prince. You can find it here.

Thank you so much for the pronunciation website.... I thought I was the only one who could not pronounce some of these names???? :goodvibes

This 44 year old "kid" will be CRUSHED if Harry dies in the end! And while I realize she doesn't need the money - I would think she'd care about creating a long lasting and well beloved children's classic. I just don't think it would be as well beloved in the future if kids know he's going to die in the end!

I agree.

JKR leaves advice/logical thinking in her books. She slowly teaches Harry (aka readers) good from bad and the consequences of our actions.

If Harry was to die, then the lessons are not worthy of learning - however, if Harry's true ability is love and to triumph over evil is love, then love will prevail. And so will Harry.

Maybe the scar is a Horcrux and not Harry himself.

Very interesting theory......DD never did say if the snake has the Horcrux, if it knew it.... just as Harry didn't know. But then how would Voldermort die if Harry doesn't ??? Maybe the two can be separate of each other but the Horcrux can inhabit Harry without Harry knowing?

I don't think the scar is the horcrux. In Goblet of Fire LV told the Death Eaters what happened that night and he said he was trying to kill Harry and the curse rebounded onto himself. He said he had "no body, and every spell that might have helped me required the use of a wand."

So, no horcrux spell.

He would have to have done the horcrux before he tried to kill Harry, and then LV just didn't mention that part. I suppose anything is possible, but I personally don't think so.
