Harry Potter Book 7 *SPOILERS*

On the Today show this morning JKR said she would definitely continue to write, but she thinks she is done with the wizarding world. :sad1: She doesn't even think she will do fantasy again. She has also said should would like to write a book for adults.

I just can't imagine...it seems so weird that she would write something non-fantasy or really non-Harry to be honest. I know that isn't really fair to her, but I can't help it. I've been following her and Harry for so long, it's almost like she is part of the world she created. I think if she wrote a new completely different book, I would be reading it looking for signs of Harry and the gang the whole time.

I had a dream last night that I was Voldy. I escaped the clutches of JKR and flew to the nearest Barnes & Nobel. I then won a contest they were holding and the prize was a horocrux. I then tried to purchase(still at B&N) a few more horocruxes and some evil magical items. I then Imperiused(sp?) the B&N employee not to give me a reciept so no one would know I (as Voldy) purchased them.

I think I need help!

in the Today Show interview JKR let on that Ron & Harry probably revamped the Auror's Dept at the Ministry of Magic, and Hermoine probably went into wizarding law as a profession ... McGonagall has been replaced as HM (getting on in age) ... unsure yet if Luna & Neville married.

Here is a copy and paste of another article talking about the NBC interview with JKR. Here is a link http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/19959323

Spoiler alert: This story reveals some key plot points in the final Harry Potter book. So if you've haven't finished the book, J.K. Rowling asks that you not read this story.

If you found the epilogue of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” rather vague, then J.K. Rowling achieved her goal. The author was shooting for “nebulous,” something “poetic.” She wanted the readers to feel as if they were looking at Platform 9¾ through the mist, unable to make out exactly who was there and who was not. “I do, of course, have that information for you, should you require it,” she told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira rather coyly in her first interview since fans got their hands on the final book.
Ummm … yes, please!

Rowling said her original epilogue was “a lot more detailed,” including the name of every child born to the Weasley clan in the past 19 years. (Victoire, who was snogging Teddy — Lupin and Tonks’ son — is Bill and Fleur’s eldest.) “But it didn’t work very well as a piece of writing,” Rowling said. “It felt very much that I had crowbarred in every bit of information I could … In a novel you have to resist the urge to tell everything.” But now that the seventh and final novel is in the hands of her adoring public, Rowling no longer has to hold back any information about Harry Potter from her fans. And when 14 fans crowded around her in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland earlier this week as part of TODAY’s interview, Rowling was more than willing to share her thoughts about what Harry and his friends are up to now.

Harry, Ron and Hermione
We know that Harry marries Ginny and has three kids, essentially, as Rowling explains, creating the family and the peace and calm he never had as a child. As for his occupation, Harry, along with Ron, is working at the Auror Department at the Ministry of Magic. After all these years, Harry is now the department head. “Harry and Ron utterly revolutionized the Auror Department,” Rowling said. “They are now the experts. It doesn’t matter how old they are or what else they’ve done.” Meanwhile, Hermione, Ron’s wife, is “pretty high up” in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, despite laughing at the idea of becoming a lawyer in “Deathly Hallows.” “I would imagine that her brainpower and her knowledge of how the Dark Arts operate would really give her a sound grounding,” Rowling said. Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t join the same Ministry of Magic they had been at odds with for years; they revolutionize it and the ministry evolves into a “really good place to be.” “They made a new world,” Rowling said.

The wizarding naturalistLuna Lovegood, the eccentric Ravenclaw who was fascinated with Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Umgubular Slashkilters, continues to march to the beat of her own drum.
“I think that Luna is now traveling the world looking for various mad creatures,” Rowling said. “She’s a naturalist, whatever the wizarding equivalent of that is.”
Luna comes to see the truth about her father, eventually acknowledging there are some creatures that don’t exist. “But I do think that she’s so open-minded and just an incredible person that she probably would be uncovering things that no one’s ever seen before,” Rowling said.

Luna and Neville Longbottom?
It’s possible Luna has also found love with another member of the D.A. When she was first asked about the possibility of Luna hooking up with Neville Longbottom several years ago, Rowling’s response was “Definitely not.” But as time passed and she watched her characters mature, Rowling started to “feel a bit of a pull” between the unlikely pair.

Ultimately, Rowling left the question of their relationship open at the end of the book because doing otherwise “felt too neat.” Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom: “The damage is done.” There is no chance, however, that Neville’s parents, who were tortured into madness by Bellatrix Lestrange, ever left St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies. “I know people really wanted some hope for that, and I can quite see why because, in a way, what happens to Neville’s parents is even worse than what happened to Harry’s parents,” Rowling said. “The damage that is done, in some cases with very dark magic, is done permanently.” Rowling said Neville finds happiness in his grandmother’s acceptance of him as a gifted wizard and as the new herbology professor at Hogwarts.

The fate of Hogwarts Nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts, the school for witchcraft and wizardry is led by an entirely new headmaster (“McGonagall was really getting on a bit”) as well as a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. That position is now as safe as the other teaching posts at Hogwarts, since Voldemort’s death broke the jinx that kept a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor from remaining for more than a year. While Rowling didn’t clarify whether Harry, Ron and Hermione ever return to school to finish their seventh year, she did say she could see Harry popping up every now and again to give the “odd talk” on Defense Against the Dark Arts.

More details to come? Rowling said she may eventually reveal more details in a Harry Potter encyclopedia, but even then, it will never be enough to satisfy the most ardent of her fans.
“I’m dealing with a level of obsession in some of my fans that will not rest until they know the middle names of Harry’s great-great-grandparents,” she said. Not that she’s discouraging the Potter devotion! “I love it,” she said. “I’m all for that.”

Dropping in for a spell:wizard:

I finished the book on weds and was just floored. I cried over Fred's death. George without Fred just seems so wrong. I always thought the both of them would die not just 1. I would love an encyclopedia to find out how George went on.

I really think the book was very well done. Lupin's death didn't surprise me, though I was to see Tonks go as well. Dobby I didn't cry over though I was sorry to see him go.

As for Kreacher, I'm glad he came around, though i don't think "just" being nice would ever have done it. He really had to tell his story first to someone who'd understand. And it underscored the point that very few ppl are completely over the edge evil.

My issue of Entertainment Weekly came in the mail today, and there is a huge article about Harry Potter in it. Like the whole magazine, except for the new reviews and charts at the end, is basically Harry Potter.

I finally finshd the book in the wee hours of this morning. I haven't read through too many pages of posts but have found out some interesting information in the last few pages. So here are some of my thoughts:

I do not know what to think of Dumbledore. This book made me not sure if I should view him as good or bad. Obviously he was good but it seemed like he was using Harry so i just don't know anymore.

The deaths...Lupin, Tonks, Mad Eye Moody, Snape, Fred, Hedgwig...URG they made me really upset! I was doing ok until the end when there were too many casualties.

Snape's memories didn't suprise me too much. I had always wondered if he had a crush on Lily. Now I know.

The lackof characters in the middle of the book was starting to get to me. I really liked the other books and all of the character interaction with the supporting chracters. So then end wa smuch better IMO. I was glad to see that Neville was there as I would ahve been really upset if he was omitted from the book. Although there was a lack of Draco. Plus the other characters who arrived at the end were mentioned upon their arrival (Co Chang being one) and never mentioned again.

The Epilogue, not too pleased with. I ahve read through posts explaining how she did it but still I wanted somehting more, something different.

And I the only one who was pulling for Harry to end up with someone else? I know tht he liked Ginny but I was waiting for someone else to come along..Cho again or maybe even Luna. Winding up wth Ginny was just too predictable.

I really hope that there is another series steming from this. Whether it be about James, Lily, Lupin, and Sirius. One about Harry's kids probably wouldn't be that appealing IMO. I can see myself rereading the series in the future. Too bad we have to wait so long for the movie. But I'd better bring along my box of tissues.

oooh! thank you! I will have to go get that! :thumbsup2

I'm new to this thread since my wife and I finished listening to book 7 on CD last night. All I can say is "wow". I managed to see the interview with JK on the Today Show this morning and am looking forward to Dateline NBC this Sunday night at 7PM when they will broadcast the entire interview. And don't forget that on Sunday at noon, the A&E channel will be rebroadcasting a special that covers the first four movies. I caught part of it last week and discovered that it would be on again this Sunday.

Glad it's over. Sad it's over. Looking forward to more from JK Rowling in the future.

I finished the book a few days ago and loved it!!! It was really hard for me to read though because I was so sad it was all over. I HATED the very ending though. 19 years later... it just left too many unanswered questions. And although she says she won't write about Harry any more, I think the ending really left open the possibilities. I can see Teddy being a very interesting character to discover. All in all I adored reading it and I am excited to go back and reread the entire series. But again, I am really left feeling sad it is over..... for now anyway!

I think they only way she revisits the world is to go back in time to the 1st Voldermort rise to power, or base it on Harry's kids and create a new character

She left so many unanswered questions so when and if she gets the bug to write about Harry again she has a pretty good blank slate without being locked into "oh I can't do that I ruined it in the epilogue".

I always wondered if she would let other writers play in Harry's World, George Lucas for instance lets other writers use some of his characters and storyline to write novels.

"Oliver Wood and the Dementors Kiss"

"Gabrielle Delacour and the Magical Rat"

"Seems she has bewitched a rat and has taught it to cook and now is running a restaurant in France, join her as she tries to hunt down this sneaky rodent before he closes down one of the best restaurants in France"

I just finished about 10 minutes ago. I am so sad to see the series end. I need a day to process everything. Ill check in tomorrow.

I just bought this at the grocery store. There is an article at the very end, that made me a lot happier with the epilogue. It makes more sense if you think of it in the way the author (of the article) does.

Is it worth buying?

I wish I could see an article on Daniel Radcliffe's reaction to the book. I kept thinking he and the other two primaries must be thrilled with such rich material to play in the final movie. Yes, I know it won't be as good as the book, but I will still go see it!

"Always." killed me. I think I'm mourning Snape more than any other character. He and Sirius both had incredibly sad lives.

Finally finished the book 2 days ago, but was out of town and wasn't able to post my thoughts/interpretations until now!

I am totally in the Snape fan group with WDW Poly Princess, wvrevy, fabshelly, etc.

What an amazing ride!! The Snape storyline was a true Greek tragedy. He made me cry more than any other character in the book. In stark contrast to James Potter, an indulged, spoiled bully, Severus was neglected and unloved as a child, loses his one true and enduring love to his hated rival, and has to endure a lifetime of hatred and suspicion. Even in the end, Voldemort couldn't just kill him with a quick Avada Kadavra - he died painfully and slowly after being bitten by Nagini. What a horrible, tortured life . . .

I've always known that there was more to Snape. He, more than any other character in the series, was complex and multifaceted - anyone else was all good, or all bad. Before the last book, it was difficult to tell with Snape, and I'm sure that's what JK Rowling wanted.

I had an inkling that he was in love with Lily, and that he and Dumbledore had planned Dumbledore's death, but reading all those memories in the pensive, knowing that Snape wanted Harry to know the truth, at last, after he was gone, was just heartbreaking.

The story has always been about love . . . but in a way, it was more about Snape's great love for Lily, that existed long before Harry was born, that was the entire reason for the story. If Snape hadn't loved Lily so completely, Harry would never have been able to defeat Voldemort in the end.

The most heart-wrenching scene was Snape in Sirius' bedroom, tears pouring down his face, taking Lily's letter with her "lots of love" signature and her picture. And I do agree that Snape's last words, "Look . . . at . . . me" were so that he could look into Lily's eyes, one last time, as he died. It was very appropriate, then, that Harry and Ginny's second son, the only one of their children to have inherited Lily's green eyes, was named Albus Severus. And when Harry explained that he was named after a Hogwarts headmaster, who was not only a Slytherin, but "probably the bravest man I've ever met", I lost it again.

Now as for that one word reply, "Always" - bottom of page 687, US edition. I didn't catch it at first, but my DH says that when you read Dumbledore's lines before it, Snape's reply indicates that he has 'always' cared for Harry. So not only did he love Lily, but he really also loved Harry - but was never able to show it.

I am so glad Alan Rickman plays Snape in the movies. He is such a great actor, and I can't wait to see him bring the emotion of those scenes to life.

In the Today Show interview JKR said she told Daniel he'd have a great death scene. But I think Alan Rickman get's the better death scene IMHO.

I got the book Wednesday, yes, the Wednesday before it came out, because I work at a library, and we got them really early because of some mistake in shipping... so I finished it Thursday, a full 30something hours before it was supposed to come out, and I couldn't talk about it with anyone, it was so annoying, because I couldn't express my sadness over the deaths... Hedwig's was totally unnecessary and depressing, and I don't think enough time was given to Tonks and Lupin at all... they were just in the lineup, and a brief mention or two of them was given.
