Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince!

Could Dumbledoor and Voldemart be brothers?? Have wondered about that for some time.

Hello,

I am a HUGE HP fan. I started last summer and have read all the book numerous times, listened to them on cd, read the hint books and debate with other fans often. My favorite book is PoA (I have read it more times then I can count, listened to it continously at work for weeks, etc...) I really don't like the movie although I will still buy it on DVD. There was just too much left out and too much fluff that should have been cut for the important stuff.

But here is my theory on book 6:
Dumbledore dies. I don't know if he is the prince or not, but he has to die. Harry still depends on him too much. He sees Dumbledore as the hero, the one who can fix everything and SAVE him. This was very evident at the end of book 5. In order for Harry to do what needs to be done, he has to lose his mentor. My guess is that the big fight scene at the end of book 6 will end with Dumbledore dying, and Harry left feeling very alone. Book 7 will be Harry's "awakening" and final battle with Voldermort.

JMHO,
Melissa

ps. I think Mark Evans is the prince.

Maybe Dumbledore is half-blood, that could be one reason why Malfoy's father detests him so, besides the obvious. I have never had the feeling that Dumbledore was anything other than pure in heart. I wonder why (if) Harry has questioned Petunia about her parents (his maternal gp's).

I also think they could have found someone better to replace Harris as Dumbledore. MacKellan certainly would have been great but I understand why he did not want the role. Harris was just perfect.

I'm not sure I believe he dies in a fight scene but i do agree that he does die.....or becomes very ill or something that causes harry to depend on himself. I am prolly just kidding myself because I just can't bare Harry losing another Father figure. I've suspected it for some time now.

One of the topic of discussion was about Mark Evans. Will he be related to Harry? Will he go to Hogwarts (he will be 11 in the next book)? IF he is realted to Harry, HOW are they related? What will be his significance in the next 2 books?

Who is Mark Evans?

Oh, thanks for asking! I have been wondering the same thing...but thought I'd wait until I was done with OotP again before admitting I didn't have a clue!

So, I admit it: I don't have a clue!

Mark Evans is a young boy that Dudley Dursley beats up in the beginning of the book... there's a theory going around about him being related to Harry because Evans is Lily Potter's maiden name. I have to disagree with it though, because that means the Petunia's was also Evans and that would make Mark their cousin of some sort and they never mentioned any other siblings of Lily, except for Petunia.

Lily's maiden name is Evans, which means her father's name was Evans. If her father had a brother, he would be an Evans too and would be Lily's uncle. If the uncle had children, they would be named Evans. So, Mark Evans could be related in a more distant manner.

I know, I'm grasping at straws, but this is fun.

Lily’s Father >>>>Lily Evans + James Potter >>>>Harry Potter

Brothers ----------------------1st Cousins------------------2nd cousins

Lily’s Uncle >>>> a Son, Last Name Evans >>>>>Mark Evans

Hmmm... sounds like grasping too many straws here. If the clues are in CoS, then it has to be someone mentioned in CoS or the other books. I think Mark Evans was just a coincidental figure - I really don't think he has anything to do with Harry. Just like Stan Shunpike of the Knight Bus - he's a fringe character who just happens to be named Evans.

I love this thread and all the theories going around. I am on my 2nd reading of the books, right now I am near the end of PoA again. I don't remember much about OoTP so I can't comment on the Dumbledore stuff, but I do like the idea of him and Voldemort being related somehow, maybe brothers (good & evil). I have no clue who the HPB could be.

I don't think it is a coincidence. She also made the point telling us his age-10. In book 6 he will be old enough to go to Hogwarts.

There are lots of characters that have been mentioned in previous books only to turn out to be big characters in future books.
Hagrid borrowed the motorcycle from Sirius Black in SS.
Mrs. Figg Harry's baby-sitter.
The Lovegood's were mentioned in GoF.

I think if he is related it would be distantly like Sirius posted. I think Harry has to have some relatives some where.

I don't really think Mark Evans is the HBP though. I do think he will be a significant person in the next books.

I don't see how they could be brothers, as isn't Dumbledore much older than Voldemort? In the flashback scenes in CoS, Tom Riddle is a student, and Dumbledore is headmaster.

I think someone mentioned Tom Riddle and Voldemort not necessarily being the same person, but I think they are. In the battle at the end of OotP, Dumbledore calls Voldemort "Tom" repeatedly.

I do think they're related though. We've never heard if Dumbledore was married, had kids, etc. As a matter of fact, we don't really know a whole lot about Dumbledore except he has a brother who did funny things with a goat, he's Headmaster at Hogwarts, and Voldemort is afraid of him.

Tom Riddle and Vodlemort ARE the same person. It was in Chamber of Secrets.

And Dumbledore was a teacher at the time Tom Riddle attented the school.

I really don't think they're related either. Something just tells me they're not. It seems to cliche to be some JKR writes.

I think DD does this for a reason, in COS Tom says he changes his name to reflect the person he wants to be aka the most powerful wizard in the world. He throws away his muggle name in exchange for his new one. DD knows that part of his power comes from people buying into this persona that Voldie has created. I think he calls him tom to let voldie know , and remind him he knows who is his and that he's not gonna play along like everyone else. Plus it's a quick jab at voldie everytime he reminds him of his real name.

Had to dive in to the fray here. Before I do, let me just say I am SO glad an HP thread is on the boards now. Gives me a place to take my theories since my friends don't sit and analyze the books like I do.

Someone brought up the "glint of triumph" that appears in Dumbledore's eye at the end of GoF. As others mentioned, that freaked me out a bit, too. However, maybe Dumbledore feels there's a victory there because now that some of the white magic that runs in HP's veins- quite literally - is now in Voldy's and could weaken his Dark Magic.

Just a thought. I also had a theory on who the HBP might be, but as I typed it out here, I realized there was no way I could be right. I think it's going to be a new character. Whoever mentioned that maybe it's not a half-wizard, half-Muggle had a very good point, IMHO.

Oh, and after reading some of the PoA reviews here, I am SO glad I made the decision not to go see the movie.

Agreed, the PoA movie was just ok. I couldn't wait for the others to come out on DVD so I could see them again; I'm not dying to see this one again. The movie did make me want to read the book again to read about everything that was left out.

I wouldn't want to be in charge of deciding what to cut. Since GoF is even longer than PoA, I'd be absolutely fine with GoF Parts 1 and 2. They'd make more that way, too. ;) Maybe release the movies eight weeks apart or maybe one on Thanksgiving, one on Christmas.

I've seen POA twice, the second time at IMAX. I enjoyed seeing the movie because it was HP, but had issues with it. I guess the whole scenery around Hogwarts being different, with bridges, courtyards, etc. And who ever saw a forest of ferns north of London??? Reminded me of Jurassic Park or Endor.

It also bothered me that the characters were in street clothes so much. One scene that bothered me a lot was when Mr. Weasley has that chat with Harry at the LC. Mr. Weasley is wearing a perfectly normal looking jacket and pants. As I recall, when Mr. Weasley dresses in Muggle duds, he always looks a bit mismatched...

The scene in the snow when Harry is crying looked pretty fake. I thought Hermione did a much better job in COS when she got teary-eyed in Hagrid's hut after being called a mudblood.

The Buckbeak scene was nice, but too long..and the Titantic business just was silly. And where is that body of water on Hogwarts property? Is that THE lake, the one with the squid? It seemed pretty big. Also the lake that Harry rescues Sirius by was also supposed to be THE lake, wasn't it? In the movie it looked pretty tiny.

Sorry, I'm being so picky...just stuff that bothered me, in addition to the obvious Marauder stuff.

I'm re-reading GOF now and will follow it with OOTP. I also agree that Mark Evans may play a role in later books since J.K. has always stated that she has the basics of the entire story already thought out and she tends to bring back characters from earlier books.

Sorry so long,,,enjoying this thread!::yes::

Can someone please tell me how to get into the door on JKRowlings site? When I go there I get a do not disturb sign. Also in the extra stuff when you you the eraser you get a drawing of objects to find. I've found the feather the beaker, and the leaves. But I can't find the spider ot the cauldron where they are all going. Thanks if anybody can help.

I have the same problem. Also When I clicked on the eraser, all it did was turn around. I didn't get any list.

OK I moved the eraser onto the empty sheet and got the feather, leaf, spider and glass. But I don't know how to move them into the caldrun. Oh I am so confused.
