Happy about alcohol policy!!

Were you the one heckling me at the Margarita tasting on the Wonder to Alaska last year? I seriously had a lady ask me if I had kids on board (while giving me a very scowly face) when I volunteered to participate in the margarita drinking contest at the end. She must have missed the fact that SHE was at an alcohol tasting, too.

Anyway, it's not about drinking all the things. It's about the value proposition of the brand and they are eroding that by taking away many perks. This is just one of the last straws.

:sad2::sad2::woohoo:
We drink on cruises because we get to a point between tipsy and almost drunk and kind of stay there the whole vacation. I mean, its a LOT of Disney, but the kid loves it, so we do that for her. The reason we drink on a cruise and not on a land based vacation...if something were to happen, say she fell and needed stitches or other medical attention, we would not be in a safe state to drive her to the hospital, legally. That is irresponsible. BUT on a cruise, medical is right there floating along with us, so both my husband and I can drink and not worry about driving or dealing with emergencies.

And OP, get ready for this...for our most recent 14 night Panama Canal Cruise we packed approx 6 bottles of wine (for the dining room), 2 bottles of champagne, bottle of Parrot Bay, a handle of Jack, a bottle 1.75L of Goose, Kirkland Margarita, pineapple juice cans, grenadine (to make drinks for the kid) and 48 bottles of water. Our roll aboard was almost 150 pounds! We stopped and bought another bottle of Jack half way through the cruise....the ONLY issue we had from consuming all that alcohol...I GAINED 15 POUNDS!!! We had half a bottle of Jack left when we pulled in to port. So yeah, we had ourselves a reallllly good time and did not bother a single person on board. (and I forgot about the bottle DCL gifted us too!) There is a big difference between acting like a teenager at your first frat/sorority party and getting naked-wasted and being an adult and maintaining a solid buzz. I'm starting to wonder how much experience you have being around responsible consumers of alcoholic beverages considering you formed such a strong opinion about drinking on a cruise ship 3 moths prior to your first sailing.

Jesus Christ!

How did we miss you?!?!

Holy cow, I've discovered yet another reason why I'm happy I canceled my Fantasy cruise for NCL Getaway: much less likelihood of prudish parents walking by with their kids and glaring at me while I'm sipping my margarita at the adult pool.

It's the ones traveling with their young, attractive nannies that are the most fun to watch.

The point people are making is not that they want to get sloppy drunk on the ship. The point is that DCL has changed another policy to further restrict the benefits that were previously offered (and for us, that was done after our cruise was already paid in full and inside the cancellation penalty period).

As an aside -- as a non-drinker myself, I want to defend the right of over-age adults to get sloppy drunk, if they want to, and if they're not violent and not rude to fellow cruisers. Consuming alcohol recreationally is perfectly legal for any of those folks and unless their behavior infringes on someone else's personal space and so forth, there's nothing wrong with it. If you're three sheets to the wind and hanging out in one of the bars and not starting fistfights or hitting on someone else's wife or shouting obscenities at the staff, but you're just having a good goofy time, then have at it. Nobody's business but your own. (Just my $0.02)

I think if this was about curtailing alcohol use then there would NO carry on alcohol allowed. The fact that they are disallowing hard alcohol only means DCL is trying to claw back money lost by those who mix their own pina coladas and marguaritas in their room instead of buying it at the pool bar. It's simple economics.

Do they still sell cases of beer onboard to keep in your room? It was something like 24 for the price of 20.

If it was about curtailing alcohol use, they wouldn't have tasting classes. The only time I felt any kind of buzz on my recent 7-nighter was at the end of Mixology. :confused3

For the record...we've never carried on our own booze. And as much as I'm hesitant to admit it in a thread like this, we're still fully snorting the DCL pixie dust. :teeth: But, in my opinion, this is absolutely a way for Disney to make more more in their own bars.

ETA: And I think it's crappy for those that DO like to bring their own stuff...and especially crappy for those that have PIF.

why would any person be happy that a privilege enjoyed by many - but not by them - is taken away?!

It's like me being happy that someone in a neighborhood I don't even live in is prevented from building a patio by their HOA.
It's like me being happy that a school district two counties over didn't pass their levy and had to start charging for sports participation.

I just cant wrap my head around "happiness" spawning from the displeasure of others.

I brought the mother load on our last lengthy cruise and drank 1/10th of it (individual bottles). On disembarkation day, we left it for disposal (yes I gave as much as I could away during the cruise). We were contacted, by Disney to see if we "gifted" it to our stateroom host. We did not but when I read the policy change I felt guilty, as if I had something to do with it.

My husband and I paid for a Very Merrytime Cruise as a Christmas gift for our DS, DDIL, and DGS, who are on a tight budget as a young family. We are going for the pleasure of seeing our DGS's first Disney experience, not to booze it up. We don't go to bars at home. That being said, my husband, on vacation, enjoys a nice scotch on the rocks before bedtime. Not in bars. We thought this would be nice after grandson is in bed in his parents cabin on our own balcony. It is ridiculous to say we cant enjoy adult relaxation of one drink on our own balcony. We will not cancel because of this policy, but responsible drinking by responsible adults is being punished.

Pour a couple hundred ml of scotch in a Snapple bottle.

I have a feeling I'm going to end up with damaged clothing due to this new policy. Wait, it still needs carried on (I hope).

To the OP: when you booked your cruise, the old alcohol policy was in place. Did you think you were booking a booze cruise then?

If you were so against the old policy why did you book with DCL in the first place?

There are still bars onboard and tasting classes, you know...drinking will still happen.

Two old grandparents are not risk takers anymore! We used to sneak it into football games at college pre 9/11, but we are past our renegade days, lol! I guess we can buy a few shots in a bar and bring it back to our balcony. I hear you can still take alcohol bought on board anywhere, so it is definitely just about the money. Plus I just ordered son a six pack of 16 ounce beer to be delivered to their stateroom, and DCL person I ordered from said I could order as many of those six-packs as I wanted, at $30 each!
