Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

Take care of yourself! I'm sorry that you're sick. That can't be fun.
I don't have kids - so I can't offer you advice there... except for you to yell at yours to not be so forgetful. :teeth:

Sandy:hug: you may have today off. While we are slave drivers, we are not mean slave drivers.

I hope DS appreciates what you did for him today. I have one like that too only his problem is locking his keys in the car.

I do hope you feel better soon. Colds are no fun.

I am so sorry you are sick!

Yeah...I guess I should know you have inspirational songs since you talk about them a lot.

But I forget about the power of music.

Thanks so much for the info on the camelbak. I just don't think I can go without it. I can't "chug" water...in order to stay hydrated, I need to drink a lot? So...I don't see how I can do 3.5 hours out there without my camelbak?

But I am taking it on every walk with me. I survived 4 miles last week and really didn't even notice it...but I am sure by 10 it will be a different conversation!

So...hijacking again...
I need to get some motivation to get out there again!

I have done it again...neglected my own training to help a friend. I could have gotten up early this morning and walked...I could have walked late last night. But after working all day and then working with Lauren for 6 hours...I was just tired!

Ruh.

I have a 5 mile walk tomorrow. I have only walked 30 minutes since Saturday...and that was on Monday.
Saturday I got horrible blisters...which were fine by Sunday...but still...I want to avoid that, if possible.

But I am still doing it! I am going to get out there and DO IT! I am! I am!

well I did get out and walk - but not speed walking, and I'm so tired! Took a few naps! (of an hour long each!) Tomorrow I have to take DD to a bday party - an HOUR away! :sad2:

Havent heard from DS -

Maroo also, about the ipod - I know I am not going to talk you out of it for the Half - but you will learn, like I did, you wont use it! I have all my special inspirational songs synched to my "trouble" spots - so in practice - I get a lift from them - I HAD to have it!! And I'm telling you - there is so much around you - so many singers, band or choirs, or local radio stations broadcasting songs... you truly will be more annoyed with yourself for having another "thing" that irratates you after 10 miles!! and say "I wish I listened to all those posters on WISH that told me I didnt need it!" (I have a thing that velcros my ipod, so its not like I had to hold it - but I was seriously annoyed that I didnt trust - and leave it)

I hear you about the water - camel backs have their uses - but Disney puts on the show - they have water every mile or every other mile - I really didnt need water ( part of me was afraid if I drank too much water I'd have to stand in line to use the dern porta-potty!) I move slow - I get 2 glasses of water and walk and I drink one fast, and the other I sip while chewing one of the eloctrolyte chews (its like a jello knox blox) You really have to listen to Team in Training about taking water and gu - its very important!

Blisters do you know about moleskin? if you have a visable red "hot" spot - then cover it with the moleskin - leaving the hole for the blister - mole skin is around the blister -

Do you know about BodyGlide? You can get this at a sorting goods store... for around $3 it looks like deodarant... (and I've read deodarant works as well) spread that stuff around your feet, then put on your socks - also there is a powder you should "dust yourself" with - it helps prevent chafing as well!

Sandy
I am very proud of you for getting out today. Just please don't over do it.

Maroo
Girl, get up and get moving. even like the banana is better than nothing. :goodvibes

Remember, you have been sick and then the extra helping with Lauren. While I think you need to get out and walk, please you don't over do it either. Just do as much as you possibly can tomorrow and even push yourself a little, but not too much.

Sandy
I hope you have heard from DS by now and he has at least said thank you. That was a great mother to get out sick and help him. I would have thought twice of saying "get it yourself". My kids tell me quite often how "mean" I am.:thumbsup2

Sandy, great job getting out and feel better!

Maroo, have you ever tried the blister bandaids? They are amazing...

Hey guys!

I compromised. I decided that it was not really wise to walk 5 miles for the first time ever outside where I have to go out and back.

So I did it at home this morning. And I cut it to 3 miles...but walked faster for those 3 miles - much faster - than my last 4 mile walk last Saturday.

I gotta get back in shape if I expect to do this. I did fine this morning. My feet did fine (I used different socks and I think they are better). But I am coughing a lot.

I think I did fine this morning. I pushed myself a little...but not too much.

My training schedule this week:
Sunday - Rest Day (may do a few Wii Fit games?)
Monday - 3 miles as fast as I can on treadmill
Tuesday - 5 miles - slower pace - as I was NCIS! ;)
Wednesday - Weights at the gym
Thursday - 3 miles as fast as I can on treadmill
Friday - Rest day - lots of protein for Saturday!
Saturday - 5 miles with the TEAM on Saturday morning!

I also have a meeting about fundraising this week!

So...how does that look?

Sandy, congrats! on getting out there!! :thumbsup2 But, I'll echo the others: take care of yourself and get well! :goodvibes

... and why did this thread turn into a discussion about wine and cheese.... Is 10:30 am too early to start drinking? :rolleyes1

Hey, maroo! Awesome schedule you have going. Congrats on getting in those 3 miles this morning. I'll second Sandy on the ipod thing. I've yet to be in a race (although I did sign up for a 1/2 marathon on Nov 1 :scared:) but I know that the races don't advocate you wearing them for various reasons so I've been training without mine. I thought going in, it'd be really hard for me - the music lover that I am, but surprisingly it's not! I'm able to relax in my runs and get lost in my own thoughts and I haven't missed the music at all. However, that said, the one thing that I'm considering doing is this: purchasing an ipod shuffle (since they're so tiny) and stocking a few motivational songs on it. I'm running the full marathon and by all accounts, the section coming out of Animal Kingdom is hard. It seems that everyone has problems with that section of the course and I'm going to keep the shuffle tucked away in a pocket incase I need to break it out to help me through that one section. If you find that you must have music, maybe consider getting a shuffle so that it's tiny and lightweight and can be easily stored away if you decide on the day of the race that you don't have much use for it after all?

I wouldnt go 5 on Tuesday... maybe do 2 but add some strength training -

what is strength training? GYAMT (haha, I had a - never mind = Glad You Asked Me That)
You want to strengthen your "core" - so that would be push - ups, sit ups, wall sits, lunges, planks.... (dr oz had a good workout program that included those dern planks - that and push ups are hard - to start with I just use a wall and do my push ups that way - wall sits, this one is hard, put your back up against the wall, and slide down till you are "sitting" (like on a chair) hold that for 60 seconds... and keep your abs PULLED IN! 60 seconds is imposible at first - work up to it! great for thighs and abs,

You should also have 2 5# weights (Goodwill usually has some, but wal mart and target have them also, they are not expensive) You then do your curl ups, and use them with your lunges - also raise them above your head then down your back, up and down

I already told you how to do the arms behind your back thumbs/palm up and bring together!

This is my week's program - and like you are doing, you tweak it to fit your needs!!
Mon - Strength and Stretch
Tues - 3.5 mile
Wed - 2 mile or cross (bike or swim)
thurs - 3.5 strength
Fri - Rest
Sat - 40 min cross (bike or swim)
Sunday - 5 mile

I HAVE to get off -- take Dd to a bday party - I googled it - ITS AT A BAR! :scared1: WTH? maybe the parents own it? I wont be dropping and leaving that you can depend on!!

Sandy
Sounds like you feel better, I'm glad. Good luck on finding the bar. How old is your DD? Thanks for more tips on strength training.

Maroo
Schedule looks good. Hope your cough gets better soon.

Dolce
Do you run on a track? or just roads? I walk on a track and started getting so bored that I had to start using the Ipod. Also the music helps my pace. I walk faster with good beats. I don't plan on bringing it to Disney though as Sandy has said that there is something at every mile mark or so that I figure I will be watching what is going on around me and won't have the boredom problem. Circles are very boring.

Sandy
Can't wait to hear about the party and I hope you have a safe trip.

apparantly we went 1 day early! :faint: I really should consult a calendar, but I trusted DD :confused3 its a 30 min drive down there (traffic) and we went in, (the 2nd apparantly) and the waitress said, there was no bday party - we have the wrong place! :confused3: At this point I was afraid we'd been "punk'd" but no, I called and it's tomorrow!! 50 people! To watch the football game and eat pizza! :rotfl2: and she said I'm more than welcome to stay! (um ya think I'm going to leave my 12 yr dd in a bar?) The friend is turning 13!! :scared1: (DD doesnt know her well, they are in a social group together)

I'm still sneezing, coughing, DD says I need to take a nap! :rotfl2: I'm just running around doing errands!

Tip - Glucosomine is a good thing! Seriously, your knees when walking, wogging, jogging take a beating, glucosomine is a HUGE vitamin/mineral that's very hard for me to swallow, but it makes a big difference

calcium it is also very wise to make sure you are getting enough calcium - do know if you take calcium supplements (Maroo check with your doctor as some studies suggest excess calcium can contribute to kidney stones! Drink your lemonade! ;) ) only take 500 mg at a time - up to 1200 mg a day (your body can only absorb 500 mg at a time!)

Also make sure the minerals have the USP symbol ( free from lead! coral calcium was supposed to be rich, and easily absorbed, testing found a LOT of lead in many coral calcium supplements!)

And when you are sitting at the computer, sitting in your car, sitting at your desk - do this simple ab exercise > > SIT UP STRAIGHT - SUCK in your GUT!! It does make a difference!! :wizard:

Hours? :confused3 Maybe - probably NOT . . . the infamous Sept 27 soft opening for 180 could be tonight (after 3 AM! online - as if that will work!)

So... I spent hours researching the history of the hours to come up with my own "best days" I have columns from times back in '08 and '09 - comparing to the days of the week we're going in '10 - - I have now forgotten what it all means!! :rotfl2:

Arrival: no adr (just in case)
Friday - Pop Dis Meet
Saturday - early Cape May for 20 - ok not 20 but still!! :yay:
Sunday - Le Cellier or Yachtsman
Monday - Grand Tea here maybe??
Tues -
Wed -
Thurs-
Fri -
Sat- departure day Ohana Stitch Breakfast!!

I know we want to eat at Boma on a wed/Sat due to their rotating menu - which may or may not still be in place (since I cant have prime rib, I'd like to try their ribs!!

Spectro has been on Mon and Thurs... I think...
thurs have been am emh at MK...
Wishes have been at 8pm

so Sunday after the Marathon, Yachtsman, or Epcot?

and I have to fit the Grand Tea in too - with our other internet group... but they havent made definate (booked ressies) plans - so which days? (at least that one I know I have to call about!)

DD doesnt think we'd enjoy Sci Fi - so maybe I should try another Epcot restraunt - or go back to Coral Reef... I need to do Chef de France and Cali Grill - and a breakfast with the Princesses at Norway - need to do that early at the end of our vacation - we're too tired to do early wake ups!!

Feel for you there. I'm almost shown up early for a party thinking I was late. A friend who was also late called to say we were coming and the Mom was like "it's not for three hours". At least we hadn't gotten too far. Our DHs didn't let us forget that one for a while. Especially the fact that we both had the time wrong.

Looks like you have a good start to your ADRs. Are we still planning for 5:00 at Cape May? I will make an ADR for 4 if you will do one for 5? or do we need for more?

I am planning:
Thurs - Turf Club
Fri - Tutto Italia for lunch so we can come to POP @ dinner and we'll just eat FC for a light dinner
Sat - Cape May
Sun - Kona's

I will be up early tomorrow to do a long walk (trying for 8 miles) so I was planning to try about 5:30 and see what happens.

Get plenty of rest tonight. :thumbsup2

eyor44 - I run at a park that has marked milage. Depending on how you want to run it, you can do a 1/2 mile loop, a 1 mile loop or a 2 mile loop. I stick to the 2 mile loop and have yet to be bored with it but I could see how a track can burn you out fast. I think that I'm about to buy one of the Garmin watches so that I can run anywhere, if I choose to do so, without being confined to a marked path. I personally haven't had any problems with my pace (so I haven't been thinking about music beats to help me out) - I'm doing better than I expected and so far, I'm holding it with each mile I gain. If I keep this up then I can complete the marathon in 4 hours - or just under. But, we'll see. My training has to keep as strong as it currently is and I may have injured my foot today. Thoughts and prayers that I haven't, please. I will cry if I have to take any time off from running due to injury. I really look forward to my runs.

Sandy- sorry that you had to drive all that way for nothing! And then do it again tomorrow?? A bar is an odd place to host a 12-13 yr old's b-day party.

About food - I'd do Le Cellier if you can snag it. Since there is a marathon party over at DHS that night, hopefully that will draw the crowds to that park and EPCOT will be on the quiet side for you. Are you going to do Chef's for lunch or dinner? I tried it at lunch for my first time last December and wasn't impressed but one day I'm going to try it for dinner - I think that the dinner menu sounds more appealing. In that area (EPCOT/DHS) have you tried Flying Fish at the Boardwalk? I had it last December and loved it.

5:30 AM??? TO RUN??? :faint: There is something wrong with me - I would so much rather sleep - seriously - I'll get up for some breakfast, a nice pot of tea - surf a bit :surfweb: then nap...

I love to sleep (alone even!! :rotfl2:) I have absolutely no desire to head out at any time of day - but esp NOT at 5:30... am OR PM - after a long day of work - I want to take a nap - NOT run!! :rotfl2:

I'm thinking Chefs for Dinner... Coral Reef for Dinner

Lisa/eeyor44 I think there is a 20% chance adr's will be open tomorrow for a "soft opening" towards 180 days (which is scheduled to open Oct 27) Oct 4 is the "actual" 90 day opening..

I wont sleep well tonight anyway - so I'll plan on scheduling 10 or 9 (more is better - just in case you know!!) but if there is "no soft opening" we should both try for 9 - and then one can cancel?? Its such a game - I do know in '08 that Cape May was crowded Saturday night - Friday it was dead - no one was there!! (we walked by and I wanted to show dh since he doesnt Dis - we were shocked at the difference a day made!!)

Dolce that park sounds exactly like something I would like!! Our park isnt marked for mileage - but it is well marked, lit - asphalt walk, lots of trees, lakes, bridges, parks, tennis courts - really nice area!

4 Hours for a Marathon!! That's about my ideal time for a Half!! Sad that!! *g

I was so going to ditch LeCellier, but its one of our favs - but the food has really diminished, and Yachtsman's steaks are better - never tried Flying Fish - off to add that!!

I am so confused...

Why do you think they are opening ADR's tomorrow? I don't get it. What did I miss? :rotfl:

rumors!!

total and complete Rumors!!

fact - dining cm's were to report to work on Sept 27
Fact - when blt and THV first accepted reservations - it clogged the system horrifically -

so possibly (not probable!) IF wdw had a brain!! they could potential do a "soft 180 adr opening"

So Sandy are you going to be up at 3 to try this? If you are can you book mine too?:rotfl:

eyor44 - I hope that you made it out for your 8 miler this morning! :thumbsup2

Come on, Sandy, don't you want to practice getting up early for the 1/2 marathon a couple of times? Do a few "dress rehearsals" before the big day? :teeth:

The park that I run at is very nice as well. Large duck ponds, t-ball and baseball fields. Very clean and butts up to some upper housing developments so it's a very nice area. My only problem is that it isn't lit after dark. And, I hope that I complete the marathon within 4 hours! We'll see how my training builds up. I run the 1/2 marathon on Nov 1 and I'll use that to get an idea for how I'll hold up for the full marathon on Jan 10. Currently I run close to a 9 minute mile. I think for the 1/2 marathon I'm going to go out with a 10 minute mile pacer group since it's my first race. As for training, I can't slow down enough for a 10 minute mile but I'm worried that in my first race setting I should attempt to slow the pace down. I'm going to begin doing some light speedwork in a couple of weeks. We'll see how that improves my current pace. And, Sandy, just keep training. Don't back off. If you train properly I know that you'll finish that 1/2 in a great time - before they turn off the timing mats and while they still have medals. You'll be so happy on that day that you put in all of the hard work beforehand as you watch it pay off. But, you have to put in the training miles in order to succeed.

Oh, I forgot to add about Flying Fish!: I had their signature potato-wrapped red snapper. Soooooo good! I'd actually wanted the char-crusted New York strip steak but I was *attempting* to save room for desert. I had started with an appetizer of cheeses (5 cheeses) and unfortunately after that with the fish, I didn't have room for dessert. :( I had really wanted to try the warm chocolate peanut-butter bread pudding.
