Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

OOOOO I'm at 99 days!! :cool1:

I think I'm ok - I've been having a hard time being awake! If I sit still, I'll close my eyes and take a nap!! Very tired - but today I've been awake since 11am - and my nose isnt running or as stuffy as it was this weekend!! So I think I'm on the mend - Just need to put my MIND in the right Frame!!

Cynthia Perfect - I appreciate the music lists!!

Maroo I honestly understand the "speed drill" but doing it :confused3 I think it was part of the Couch to 5 K program, plus dh has it in one of his schedules -

Arelysadrianna :upsidedow Yep, if you did it once, and you're back again - that's nutz! :goodvibes I've posted a weekly schedule for week 3 - I am on the slow and steady path... I know what I did that I could improve on -
Did you add electrolytes to your run? I really like the gu blox - or the jelly beans, dont like that gu stuff - but it does help - dh has found some "magic" pills that work awesome (according to him!) called endurolytes -

it makes a HUGE difference in the heat and humidity - in addition to drinking that water when its offered on the course! I dont need a glass of water at mile 2 - but I drink it anyway - so I wont HAVE to have it at mile 6...

I also stopped at the bathrooms in Frontierland - a/c and flush toilets!! :rotfl2:

DH is out on his run, so I have to get dinner done - and then - spend some time with dh!! :goodvibes

Hey guys!

I compromised. I decided that it was not really wise to walk 5 miles for the first time ever outside where I have to go out and back.

So I did it at home this morning. And I cut it to 3 miles...but walked faster for those 3 miles - much faster - than my last 4 mile walk last Saturday.

I gotta get back in shape if I expect to do this. I did fine this morning. My feet did fine (I used different socks and I think they are better). But I am coughing a lot.

I think I did fine this morning. I pushed myself a little...but not too much.

My training schedule this week:
Sunday - Rest Day (may do a few Wii Fit games?) *** Rested!
Monday - 3 miles as fast as I can on treadmill *** CHECK!
Tuesday - 5 miles - slower pace - as I watch NCIS! ;) **NOPE...
Wednesday - Weights at the gym
Thursday - 3 miles as fast as I can on treadmill
Friday - Rest day - lots of protein for Saturday!
Saturday - 5 miles with the TEAM on Saturday morning!

I also have a meeting about fundraising this week!

So...how does that look?

Ok...my schedule is about to have to change.

I got my schedule shifted at work. I used to be off on Wednesday's and now I am off on Friday's...

And I changed from helping Lauren on Wed to helping her on Tues...so...back to drawing board in schedule!

For the rest of this week:
Today - I get a big goose egg! I should have done something this AM...no time if I am helping Lauren!
Wednesday - 5 miles, slower pace (probably as I watch TV? Maybe rent a movie?)
Thursday - weights and bike with Lisa
Friday - my new day off!! ??? But my big walk is Saturday?? what do I do here?
Saturday - 5 mile walk
Sunday - ? I am going to have a busy Sunday?

Having Friday's off will be good in some respects...and will help my trips to Disney, I think!

In fact...Lisa made me laugh. She called me 2 hours after I told her and said, "Oh my gosh! That means you can go to Disney every weekend!!!" :rotfl:

"Goodness woman...you think I am made of money?"

"Well, you already have your tickets! And you have to eat. So just get a cheap flight and go!"

No wonder I have issues!

Good morning runners!
Dolce, great work and going for the full, that's so exciting! My sister just did her first full last week and watching her train has been...wow.

Hello! I'm glad that you're inspired. :goodvibes Awesome that your sister finished her marathon! The training part is a full time job. I only go to work, train and sleep anymore. I'm trying to do the training right and that makes it a huge commitment!

Maybe next year you'll sign up to do the 1/2 at Disney???

OOOOO I'm at 99 days!! :cool1:

Sandy, I'm not an expert on the speed training - yet - (give me a year ;) ) but no, there wasn't anything like that in the C25k program. I plan to start doing some speed work soon. Runners World will probably have some great articles on things such as fartleks (I think I spelled that correctly) and tempo runs - I just need to read them! Do something such as get on the treadmill and for x amount of minutes (lets say 5) walk at the pace you've been managing so far (you've been at 17 mm -right?) then for x amount of minutes (lets say 2) kick it up a step to 16 mm and then for another 5 go back down to 17 mm and then repeat a few times. Do this once a week and it should help you increase your speed. Search for articles at Runners World for more sound advice on this - I'm just a newbie.

OK, I'm soooo jealous that going to Disney each week-end is even an option for you! :upsidedow Schedule looks good but what I would do is take Sunday off as a rest day after your long run and then add in a shorter mid-week run on the schedule for Monday. I don't see Monday on the schedule at all - or is it impossible for you to work out on that day? I'd try to get in at least 3 walking training sessions/week. Cross-training is great but it won't prepare your body for the 13.1 mile walk you'll have to do in January.

I had to take my own advice tonight: I so did not want to go to the gym. I tried to justify it as "well, it's not a running day! it's just cross-training!" In the end - I went to the gym. I did lower body weights followed by 45 minutes on the bike. Tomorrow I have a 4 mile run.

lisa.eeyor44 I forgot to say thank you for posting how far you've come - and how far you are determined to go!! :thumbsup2

maroo who's program are you following? I'm going to tell you what dh - the "marathoner" the "trainer" the "coach" the very kind, patient man I look up to!! I asked him about "speed training" and he gave me a "choked shocked" look - like for who? I know that I am behind in the time aspect - and I know you feel the same - he assures me that in any and ALL training programs - speed drills are NOT in it unless you are in an advance state - he says as long as we stick to the training plans - and not just "give up" for a week, take a week off here and there.. that by week 6 - 7 we will see a better time - that we have to trust the program, and stick to it!! I know I'm afraid to believe -

did you watch Biggest Loser - I was in tears tonight! I didnt think Tracy deserved all the hate - but Shay, and what the red team did - Just listening to Sean - ok if you didnt see it - you need to watch it online!!

Dolce I really needed to hear what you went thru and how you succeeded! Thank you for sharing!! You are going to make it! :wizard:
So Dolce, trust the program, dont worry about the Speed stuff - if you want more encouragement, or specific help - either post and I'll ask dh - or post on the event/comp thread - there are a lot of smart, helpful, experienced people over there!! You are at a 4 hour finish pace - you will NOT be swept!! Promise!! Keep doing what you are doing!!

Arelys.. I think you mentioned panic attacks - I can really relate - I have had a few panic attacks on my path to this '10 Half... The one that made me think I was really having a heart attack, scares me each time my heart rate gets going too fast... I'm so afraid, I havent told anyone - not even dh!

So, one day at a time... one step at a time - - NO looking back... only go forward!!

"I know where I'm goin... doncha wanna come too?"

(I also work tomorrow and Thurs!! woohoo :woohoo: no internet tho!)

You all inspire me! Way to go. I guess I can be a great cheerleader from 12,000 miles away. HA! Virtual cheerleading- that's too funny. But here ya go...:cheer2::banana::thumbsup2:cheer2:

Yesterday I was crammed into a local full-sized van that they use for public transportation here with 40!! :scared1: other people. It was crammed to the point of being downright dangerous. I had to half sit, half stand, holding onto the bar on ceiling for the 1 hour ride out the village I was visiting a friend in. 3 others were leaning ON me. Today, I am sooooooooooooo sore I can hardly move. I seriously had a hard time breathing when I got off the thing. I will never do that again!!! Ever! Next time, I'll take a taxi! All that to say, if I was in better shape I could probably move today without wincing. It is time to get moving!!

Sandy, you mentioned a good video. Can some of you others recommend one or two more that would be helpful for me?? It can't use too much equipment, just me and my floor. I will order a rubber band though, and I have 2 and 4 K weights to use too.

Good job, everyone!

If starting from 'scratch' what is the time you need to train for a 1/2? 3 months-6 months? By the looks of all the schedules do you work out 6 days with 1 day off? I was just wondering.:confused3

I think I want to try to run a 1/2 someday. It would take a serious commitment. I have a hard time getting to the gym now with work and DD3. I'm only able to get to the gym 2 days a week now, while DD is at school. I guess if I stopped staying up late I could go at 6am.UGGGHHHH just typing that makes me want to vomit! LOLOL:lmao:

I'm doing the full marathon - not the 1/2 - and my full marathon training schedule is 16 weeks out. I know some are longer but I think the avg. training schedule is 16 weeks. You would need a solid base of running at least 3 miles at a time before beginning a marathon schedule. (If you plan to run - not walk it) So, use a program like the C25k program to teach you how to run 3 miles. I used this program and it worked great for me. I downloaded podcasts to listen to tell me when to run and when to walk so I wouldn't constantly have to look at a watch. Just Google “C25k podcasts” and a link for some guy named Robert something should pop-up and you can download his podcast. It’s a 9 week training program that will have you running a full 30 minutes by the end of the 9 weeks. If you can maintain a 10 minute mile - then by the end of the 9 weeks you’ll pretty much be running a 5k.

After you can run a full 3 miles, begin running 3 – 4 days/week with each run being 3 – 4 miles. I think that after you can successfully do this, you’ll be 100% ready for a ½ marathon training schedule. Here’s one that I found (there are others). This one is 10 weeks out:

10-Week Half Marathon Training Schedule
Week Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
1 3 Rest 3 3 Rest 4 Rest
2 3 Rest 4 3 Rest 5 Rest
3 3 Rest 4 3 Rest 6 Rest
4 3 Rest 5 3 Rest 8 Rest
5 3 Rest 5 3 Rest 10 Rest
6 4 Rest 5 4 Rest 11 Rest
7 4 Rest 6 4 Rest 12 Rest
8 4 Rest 5 4 Rest 9 Rest
9 3 Rest 4 3 Rest 8 Rest
10 3 Rest 3 Walk 2 Rest 13.1 Rest

(sorry - I can't get all of that to line up properly but each line first gives you the week # and then how many miles to run for Mon, Tues, Wed, ect...)

This particular one has you training up to 12 miles before you taper off. You taper the last two weeks before your ½ marathon in order to let your body “rest” and be ready to run the 13.1 on race day.

There is no reason for you to not start training now. Go ahead and begin the C25k program – I know there are people on the WISH board that are currently working on that program. Join their thread for friends/motivation. In 9 weeks you’ll be running 30 minutes and then you will have time to improve your speed before you’d have to begin training for the 2011 Disney ½ marathon. You could even run a local ½ marathon before the 2011 Disney one or you could do local 5k’s and 10k’s in between completing the C25k program and beginning official training for the 2011 Disney ½ marathon.

As for your daughter – does your gym have a kids club that she could stay in while you run on the treadmill? If you do the treadmill – you’re supposed to use a 2% - 3% incline for your runs in order to help transition you to run outdoors.

Sandy - I meant to ask: We're all getting together at Cape May on Sat Jan 9 around 5:00 (ish - whatever time we can get closest?) Right? You guys are including me in your total count number - right? I'd love to meet you all. Is the first one of us (which won't be me) making one reservation (as soon as they're allowed to book reservations) for our group? Do we have a total headcount? I won't be arriving to WDW until Jan 8 so I'm not allowed to book ADR's until 10/10. I know that you're arriving before me so your reservation window will open before mine does.

Dolce27-
Thanks for the info. I might have to start taking this serious. Right now I've been walking a 1/2 mile then running 1 1/2 then walking till I hit 30 minutes of cardio. At the end of my 1 1/2 mile run, I know I can go longer. Maybe once I get back from WDW I can start pushing it up to 3 miles of running. I don't know if I can get to the gym every other day though... Maybe I can do Mon, Wed, & Fri. :confused3

I know that the Hartford Marathon is October 10th.. I'm working that day but my DW just signed up 2 days ago to run the 5k for CCMC Wings of Hope...http://www.connecticutchildrensevents.org/Event/348/Wings-of-Hope.html

I will start keeping my eyes open for a 1/2 that I can train for. Although we are getting towards the winter up here. I don't know if there are going to be any more this year.

Tim I actually went thru the 3 "main" Marathon Men - their books, and websites on the first 2 pages of my trip report!!

DH truly loves Hal Higdon's schedule best - he's the most flexible! You could actually follow his schedule and only run on weekends IF you do cardio and strength during the other 4 days!

For instance today I'm only supposed to do 40 min of strength - but since tomorrow its supposed to be "wet" I'll swap and run 3.5 today!

I also had a friend that only trained on weekends - she pushed herself a little too hard because she wanted to meet some Dis WIsh'ers at the Rock and Roll Half - Nashville's heat was INTENSE - but she did it!!

You will be amazed at what you can do!! Just put your mind to it - I didnt really train for '08 (but wasnt as heavy, and in a bit better shape then) I just had the mind set that 13.1 miles was just a day in the parks!! :thumbsup2 Now I'm determined to be an "official finishers" As long as the weather holds, I know I'll be ok - there is something about the actual race day that pumps up your adrenline - thats why the C25K program asks you to join a 5K - as well as any Half, or Full Marathon training - to get a feel for crowds, start lines etc...

Dolce right :thumbsup2 start with C25K program (google will get you there) ALSO, look for the 2 main books - Marathon for Mortals - the Bingham Book (mentioned on page 2 here I believe :rolleyes1) As well as Galloway's Book - all 3 gentlemen I believe write for Runner's World - check those all out at your local library, to get a feel for what floats your boat - but they will inspire you!

Also - note - I am FAT< LAZY and OLD _ not as old as dirt, I just feel that way!! And by all that is Holy - IF I CAN - YOU CAN!! (even tho there are days when Mr CANT rears his ugly head and gets into my head!!)

Leisa I really like Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds - she has several - and you may hate him, but he helps get your heart rate going - RICHARD SIMMONS!!! Both you should be able to get 2nd hand pretty cheap! I tried the Billy Banks, and couldnt keep up - and I have an exercise ball that came with a dvd that is easy to follow along - but honestly - google is your friend - Dr. Oz and his cowriter/doctor have put their regiment online - I think if you google YOU on a Diet - it takes you to Real Age or something, which was the title of their first book - all that strength training I mentioned upthread is online - with videos to help (online!!) The planks are hard to explain, but he has them posted!! :thumbsup2

Yes, I'm hoping, and praying I can get online Oct 4 at 3am - if not I'll call - I was going to make it for 12 in case we get a few that want to join us that havent spoken up!! This way I know you'll meet some of the WISH group - so you wont feel alone as you run your Marathon!! You will be awe struck at how their cheering at certain points will perk you up!!

Not likely. I don't run. Nor do I have any desire to. For a variety of reasons. My sister actually just did a tri but right before that, her first marathon. I can't see any way I could fit anything like her training schedule into my life but I have dramatically increased my own workouts, going from 2-3 a week, to 5-6 and it's gotten me out of my rut. Her schedule was intense and her stress level, high. I'm glad she did it, for her but....for me....

No...I have a simpler mission than running a half.

I want my abs back.

I am on a mission.

They hurt right now.

That's a good thing.

I'll tell you though, if there was a BIKE ride/race through Disney I would be ALL over it! Too complicated though to get bikes down there, rent, etc, but that would be the bomb.

Or maybe I could Zumba my way through fanstasy land...

Can some of you others recommend one or two more that would be helpful for me?? It can't use too much equipment, just me and my floor. I will order a rubber band though, and I have 2 and 4 K weights to use too.

Liesa, for strength training, I love pilates mat work outs, they are just wonderful for your core and there is a small amount of cardio in there too. It's doable without a mat too, you don't need any equipment, just some floor space.

I got 3.5 miles in - it took me an hour! :faint: Interesting how dh got into it with me yesterday "you should enjoy running, the time outside, teh weather etc etc...." um NO dh, I enjoy being able to go to Disney!! :goodvibes I HATE running!!

Anyway - Today's song from my ipod may make you :rotfl2:

May the good lord be with you
Down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness
Surround you when youre far from home
And may you grow to be proud
Dignified and true
And do unto others
As youd have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart youll always stay
Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young

May good fortune be with you
May your guiding light be strong
Build a stairway to heaven
With a prince or a vagabond

And may you never love in vain
And in my heart you will remain
Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young
Forever young
Forever young

And when you finally fly away
Ill be hoping that I served you well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime
No one can ever tell

But whatever road you choose
Im right behind you, win or lose
Forever young, forever young
Forever young ,forever young
Forever young, forever young
For, forever young, forever young

Hi guys!

I am so excited! :yay:

For the first time EVER...I did FIVE miles! At one time.

Actually...I did stop for a bathroom break. I didn't do it fast...just wanted to make sure I could do it!

Saturday's mileage is 5, too...so I get to do it again in a few days!

Thank you all so much for your encouragement! I was so excited to get on here and tell you guys! :)

"I know where I'm goin... doncha wanna come too?"

(I also work tomorrow and Thurs!! woohoo :woohoo: no internet tho!)

Oh gosh.

I think I need to explain my "speed" thing...

I don't really mean speed...not like real speed.

I just mean that I am going to try to do it in the 16 min mile pace...I am going to try to beat my last time...if that makes sense?

Like today...I just walked. It took me about an hour and a half to go 5 miles. Which is pretty slow.

So...no worries on Maroo "speed" training. :rotfl:

So...how is everyone today?

Sandy: I love your song!! (And please tell DH and your dr about your panic attacks. I know they can fix them if they are aware!)

Tim: Join us!!! I know you are in Disney...but when you get back - join us! You don't have to do anything formal at first. Maybe you could shoot for the rumored inaugural half in the fall.

Dolce: My Monday schedule...I don't know why I left that off...I do 3 miles...my "speed" training. But my schedule may change some each week. I think I am going to have to go week by week and just make sure I have stuff on most of the days!

I got 3.5 miles in - it took me an hour! :faint: Interesting how dh got into it with me yesterday "you should enjoy running, the time outside, teh weather etc etc...." um NO dh, I enjoy being able to go to Disney!! :goodvibes I HATE running!!

But you did it! Good job

Why do DH's NOT understand that that is SO not motivating?

Or at least it isn't to me, it has the absolute opposite effect.

Hi
Everyone has been doing a great job.:thumbsup2

Yesterday I did 4.5 miles and today I cleaned the dance studio. I was there for almost three hours sweeping and mopping. We are going to count that as exercise tonight.

Tim: I don't belong to a gym. I just go outside. I know winter is setting in but does DD like her stroller? I used to get some really good workouts pushin a stroller. and when it gets cold, do you live near a mall that you could walk inside?

Dolce: of course you are included in the count. Can't wait to meet you.

Maroo: congrats on the 5 miles. I understood what you meant by "speed" training.:rolleyes1

Sandy: sounds like you are starting to feel better. I'm glad. :goodvibes

Leisa: way back when I made up a tape of songs I liked that lasted about 30 minutes and then I just did a variety of different exercises to the music. Even running in place a bit.

Cynthia: love your music list.

Arelysadrianna: please don't have panic attacks. You will be okay.

Hey guys. I had a rough day yesterday and missed my run. I’ve been training for this marathon for about eight weeks now and this was the first run that I’ve missed. My body just wasn’t physically up to it yesterday – I made it as far as the restroom at work to change into my running clothes when I had to acknowledge that I just had to take a day off. It killed me. I really do enjoy my runs and completing each one gives me such an emotional high of accomplishment. But everything was going wrong with me yesterday and despite the fact that I did listen to my body (which I need to do so that I don’t overdo it or injure myself), I still feel seriously guilty for not making my run.

I was to do 4 miles last night and 3 tonight. I’ll do 4 miles tonight and just miss a 3 mile run for this week. I know missing this *one* run is not going to wreck my training schedule, but I really do hate that I missed it. :sad2:

Congrats! to all of you for getting in your mileage yesterday! Great job! I’m very excited about your 5 miles, maroo!!

Adding: 31 days until I run my 1/2 marathon :scared1:

Is anyone around today? :confused3

Sandy? Are you over on the WDW website trying to back door it in to schedule your ADR's a few days early? Is that why you're MIA? ;)

Dolce
I was feeling bad that I am missing my walk tonight and you perked me right up.:thumbsup2

I am trying to figure out the whole dining online thing - I keep getting the error code :confused3
