Hakuna Matata - Gobbling up the pavement and thankful we can!

Welcome Saylan! :)

Regarding the shoes, did they put you on a treadmill and watch and record you running? Without that, they are REALLY only guessing. If they DID, go back and explain to them what the issues are.

However, I might not be so quick to blame it on the shoes. What part of your knee hurts though? It almost sounds like it could be a classic case of too much too soon and irritation of the IT band, which has nothing at all to do with the shoes and everything to do with too much too soon. I speak from experience there - I pushed to do a 10K (nowhere near a marathon - marathons are 26.2 miles; a 10K is, well, a 10K) with 2 weeks' notice to try and get into a timed corral. I succeeded, but I put myself out of commission in doing too much too soon. My training plan said unequivocally THREE DAYS OFF with an injury. FULL days - meaning it hurt on Sunday, so I had to take Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off, then try a little on Thursday and see how it felt. Luckily some friends had linked me up with some yoga stretches and I was able to start back.

Make sure your physio knows that you're still running, and that they are ok with that. And above all, do NOT increase your mileage/time more than 10% each week. Any more than that and you're really asking for an injury.

~beth

They had me do squats and walk without shoes on, then had me test a few of a group they selected based on what my feet were doing.

I have been rolling my IT band out every run (and at physio) as well as after most leg workouts. Partly it's due to my pronation (which happens in one foot) and so my body has been compensating for years. I'm having to learn to re-engage my glute and to do that has been horrible (my therapist has to break down the muscle and start it up again and it hurts so much!!!!). I'm learning how to walk properly which is why I took a week off a couple weeks ago, but it's not easy.

My therapist said I can run, but only 1-2 times a week and short runs. He gave me the green light to run a ittle more last week as long as any knee pain I have doesn't increase with the duration of running.

The reason I think the shoes need to go is that the right foot (the one that pronates) it feels like there's no arch support at all so I find it really hard to avoid pronating. I do everything I can but it's like landing on air and slowly my foot moves inward and up the inner side of the shoe causing awkwardness in my gait. That's what it feels like is happening, anyways. It doesn't happen on the left, so I dunno.

I did the Whitby Waterfront 10K last year and I think it was close to 10C outside. It was warm enough that I went in shorts and a long sleeved shirt. Unheard of for November right? It's a well organized race and the lunch they give you afterward is yummy!

If you wanted to wait for a bit to try a 10K or wanted to run a second race, there's one in Toronto in December. I think it's called the Tannebaum something or other. Some of the Resolution Runs (Running Room) in London and Sarnia also have 10K running options. I think with the races, you'll want to make sure that they're chip timed. That way you'll be able to submit something to Disney. Make sure you get some outdoor mileage before the Princess. The TM and outdoors aren't the same!

As for the running stores, I get a different opinion depending on who's assessing my running. I've been told that I need stability shoes by one person and motion control shoes by another. I've also talked to people who have told me that they don't believe in all the different types of support shoes and to go with whatever feels comfortable. Show your shoes to your physio and see what they have to say about it. Also most stores will let you take the shoes home and run on the TM to try them out.

I think I'd prefer to run one sooner rather later as it's only going to get colder with a higher chance of snow.

I checked Running Room and found the Whitby one first. I'll probably look at others but I'd mostly be running it for trying to have a pace to submit so thanks for the tip on the chips. I should probably make sure I have the right shoes first since I can't return them if I run outside in them (except at time of purchase and with permission of the stores).

I showed them to the therapist and he barely looked at them. I re-emphasized last time that I really felt nothing in the way of support so tomorrow he's agreed to look at me on a treadmill to see how I'm landing on them. I need support for sure, and he said the ones I have are ok, not the highest support I can get but ok. Doesn't really give me a lot of comfort...

Thanks for all the welcomes!

Margie: I already volunteered for the W.I.S.H. Turkey Trot at 10K so I'm game for the Team one too! I'm trying to nudge my b/f off the couch to do 5K with me. :rotfl:

Birthday-wise: Sept. 5 (just turned 25 :sad2:). I believe I'm not the only one with that birthday if I recall correctly.

Nkkilala: Thanks! Yeah, I'm trying to get back on track for my training but have to make sure I space things out more. I hope you're feeling less sore (and much better) soon!

Hi Team!

Saylan....WELCOME!! Look forward to getting to know you better!

Connie....After some thought, please add me to those who are in favor of a medal for the Turkey Trot. Our local race doesn't give one, so this way I have something to show for my efforts besides another T-Shirt!

Sally....Hope the first day of work went well for you.

AFM: Rainy and cold here yesterday, so I did the Wii Fit today as cross training. DH and I went out Sunday afternoon and put in 6 miles. Today is a rest day. We're a little behind due to our trip to Food and Wine, but I'm confident we can catch up. DH was stiff on Monday, but I felt pretty good. Made a trip to my chiro though and he found a sore spot in my right quad. Still tender today after he worked on it.

Saylan ~ Weird. Here all the real running stores do the treadmill thing. How else are they going to see what you do when running? Seeing what happens with squats and walking barefoot is one thing, but nothing really at all like what you'll do when running - as evidenced by your shoes not working for you. Though with it being just one foot, it sounds like you probably need custom orthotics for that foot. Your therapist's reaction is a bit worrying to me. Is he even lisening to your concerns or just going along with the program he's decided is right? Does he truly do sports medicine or is he more just rehab from stuff? That can make a huge difference - see if you can find someone who runs and "gets it". Good luck.

Nikki ~ Take it easy!! Falls are never fun!!

Eva ~ Great weight loss!

Margie ~ Hope your day went well!!

AFM ~ Yesterday I did my own special blend of torture - I combined the shorter workouts on Bob Harper's Cardio and Yoga dvds, so my workout ended up being "Butt, Balance and Abs". I'm feeling pretty good so far...we'll see what happens as the day goes on. Going to do the running club fun run tonight - I have a girly doctor appointment tomorrow night, so I had to swap my rest day and run day. Trying to watch the calories today so I can go to Chipotle with the group after the run. :P

Hope everyone has a magical day!!

Wow, where did all the posts come from.

Will try to catch up tonight, hope everyone is doing well.

Yeah, and it's odd cause the place I got these ones from (the Running Room) has high accolades from a lot of runners and sports medical people. They didn't even have a treadmill in the store that I could see. I first got a pair of shoes at New Balance and they at least had a treadmill (they just didn't put me on it). :confused3

My therapist is with the Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medical Clinic. My understanding is he works with sports people only, but in rehab and working on improvement of movement processes.

The foot I've had issues with is half a size smaller (not uncommon, I know) but I wonder if that is making whatever support in the shoe not line up properly since they're sized to match the other foot which is bigger?

I originally thought I needed orthotics but I think partly he wants me to learn to use the correct muscles and habits first otherwise the orthotics would become a crutch for walking. :confused3 I don't know that though, I'm just guessing.

He did say he was holding off on the running because my walking habit needed so much work and he didn't want to start with intense landing (ie. running where I pu 3 times or more of my body weight on my foot) until I could land properly without the added weight pressure.

Good luck with your Dr. appointment! I hate them so hopefully yours goes well (and is short!).

Margie: Thanks for the birthday wishes. :cool1: It was the second one in history where I didn't cry!

MaryJ: Thanks for the welcome. Everyone's so friendly here and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone better too. I know the pain of quad work. My therapist works the quads and the glutes (I'm going in today :sad1:) and it's so damned hard not to cry.

On a side note: I managed to do my 3 miles yesterday (3.04 in 30 minutes) but my left knee (not the bad knee) is definitely disappointed with me. I have physio today in less than an hour so we'll see what the therapist does. It's quite possible that the cold is just making it stiff to move but it's brutal!

Also going out tonight for my mom's birthday with my parents, grandmother, and reluctant b/f. He hates family gatherings, as those of you who read the christmas blues thread around here can understand, since his family is crazy. I'm going to try and get my mom's gift done in time, and if I do, I'll post pictures (it's totally a Disney gift because I'm a nerd :rotfl:).

TGFRD (Thank Goodness For Rest Days!) :woohoo:

Mary- It has been forever since I did the Wii Fit!! (over 1 year) in our new house there really isn't a spot for it right now, unless I want to put a TV in the living room and I REALLY DON'T want to do that! I like my quite place!

Beth- Feeling much better after my fall. The only thing really still bothering me is my bicep but even that is less noticeable now. Your self created workout sounds like fun, a killer of a workout but a good blend!

Saylan- HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!! I too turned 25 this year birthday buddy!

Don't ya just love it when we get a little gabby!!!

AFM- I went out this morning for my workout. First workout since my 5K. It felt great to get out there! It was a Run/walk this morning and I didn't want to run but made myself. I felt great running!!! I just get this mental block when I am out there that I can't run!! Must be repressions from elementary school!

Did 2 miles in 30 minutes! Felt great!

I'm off to try to get new shoes tonight (have been trying to get to the shoe store for over a week!) we'll see if it happens!

Take care everyone!

Good morning Team!

Wow, what lively spirited conversations going yesterday! Gotta Love it! Just a perfect example of what a team is all about! :grouphug:

Mary You're in on the medal. When I have a final count of the numbr of medals needed, after Thanksgiving, I can get them ordered. Postage will be the BIGGEST part of the cost.

Saylan, Nikki and Beth - how wonderful to have such "gabby" people for our team!

Saylan and Elizabeth - Happy Belated Birthday Wishes to you both.

Kim - Glad to see you posting, again. Are you in the 5K with the rest of us?

Eva - So good to hear from you! Stop by often. Baby weight can be the worst kind, btw!

Saylan - foot issues! :scared1: I have an extremely high instep with a bendable/mushy arch. I overpronate and don't bend my ankles in order to walk upright. I have to use a HARD insole and a regular shoe. A motion control shoe just makes matters worse. foot issues, :upsidedow

Margie - Life is runnng head on. I will call tomorrow. We have to do grocery shopping and errands later today.

AFM - yup, 50 miles one way to buy groceries. Gotta get it done before the Thanksgivng crowd rush. I hate to be in the grocery storesd with a huge crowd of people who only cook once a year! They ask for recipes and locations of products and everything else.

See ya - Connie

Good Morning Team!

Welcome Saylan!

Vicky – sounds like you had a good shopping trip! Space Coast Race is the Sunday after Thanksgiving (Nov 28th). Good luck with the career research! Just remember the down side to not working 9 to 5 – you work when others are sleeping, you may not get holidays off or weekends off, so when things happen on weekends, you end up using your time off to do them (like races). I did shift work most of my life, and I did prefer it to 9 to 5, but at times it was difficult in the social arena. After 5 years of the midnight shift, I decided I would never take another job where I had to work that shift – but I did really like the 3pm to 11pm type shift.

Eva – we will try to meet while on the next trip! I will put the 3rd on our calendar! 50 pounds in 9 months is great!!!

Connie – Hope you are feeling better!

Nikki – Thanks for the info on the free registration – that is tempting, coming from Wyoming, I think we would have had a chance, but we will be on the Disney Wonder in Alaska on that date!

Dave – How did Sally’s day at work go?

Margie – Hi!

Beth – Your sure do have a lot of races in Dec!

Mary – Hi!

AFM – The dogs and I did get out for a short walk yesterday, road was icy and wind was so strong at times that I felt like I was walking thru mud. Road is still icy this morning (melted yesterday, but more snow and ice last night) – it is clear today, so I think I will wait a bit before going out. It is supposed to be a bit warmer tomorrow – in the 50’s – so the snow we have will melt then if not today. Today will only get into the 40’s. We went to see Gordon Lightfoot last night – good concert! But late night.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Lynn ~ Hee! Yeah. One per week I just realized. Oh well. They actually just about fit in mileage-wise with my long runs (I may have to do a little more after the race) so it all works out.

~beth

Sally's work is moving along. As you well know it takes a while to into work mode again after not working for a while. It a unique environment where it's a big open room with little cubicles and work stations.

I had a great training walk with my race walker buds. We did 6.1 miles at 13:17 pace. Good conditions 40s and overcast cool to start but we warmed quickly.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team! Half way through the week :cheer:

Lynn - I worked a similar shift for many years. I did a Sunday-Thursday shift from 12-8PM. I loved it because I'd never had any rush hour traffic, I could sleep in a little, still had time to schedule appointments in the mornings and I loved having Fridays off! I know a few people who've done 12AM-8AM but I would think that would really mess with one's eating/sleeping schedule and (of all things to be worried about) I know I'd gain weight. Be careful on the ice! I hope the slightly wamer weather melts and dries the roads for you!

Margie - Thanks for the RoadID code! I've been thinking about updating mine to the rubber version. I just have to think of a saying/quote to put on the bottom. Forgot to ask if you ever found gloves similar to the Pearl Izumi ones.

Connie - Wow! That's a long way to go for groceries! My cousins who live in Europe thought my grocery store was far from my house (about 3/4 of a mile). They're use to having everything just around the corner. What's on the menu for Thanksgiving day?

Nikki - I went to Birch Run and Great Lakes Crossing (Auburn Hills). I was telling Margie that I have to make the trip back in the spring so we can all have a mini DIS meet. I think that would be fun! The Graston is working out well so hopefully the run tomorrow morning will go well. WTG with the walk/run this morning!! Good luck with shoe hunting tonight! What kind are you looking for?

Saylan - Happy birthday to your mom! Hope you guys have a fabulous dinner! I was going to PM you the name of my physio but forgot that you're in SW Ontario. That's a little disappointing to hear that he didn't really have a close look at your shoes or have much to say about them. I've showed my shoes to my chiro and PT and both of them took them and twisted and bent them to check for support. You could also ask at your clinic to work with a PT or chiro who are familiar with runners or who are runners themselves. Not sure if you have Running Free stores in your area but that's another option for a running shoe store.

Beth - Love Chipotle! I discovered them in DC about 4 years ago and just recently, they opened two locations in Toronto. Fortunately, neither are close to my house or my office, otherwise I'd be there all the time!! Good job on your work out! I'll bet you earned your Chipotle meal!

Mary - pixiedust: Hope you're feeling better today! I also have the Wii Fit but haven't used it in a while either - like Nikki, I'm a little short on space.

Eva - Congrats on your weight loss and winning the pot at work! Nice! I was in Auburn Hills and Birch Run - I wish I had more time but I'm short on vacation days as it is. Otherwise I could have spent more time there. Funny thing… the other day someone emailed me and typed my name Vivky. I started laughing and everyone was looking over at me.

Sue - Did you make it out for a run last night? Did you beat the rain? What a storm!!

AFM - I've got boxing tonight and that's about it. My chiro said I can go for a short run tomorrow so hopefully that will go well and pain free!

Have a great day everybody! :wave2:

Vicky, thanks! I'm sure she wishes less birthdays would happen (don't we all?) but she seems excited.

He did twist them and bend them a bit when I first mentioned it. I've decided I'm going to go to the Running Room some night this week and talk to them about my concerns and see if they can make some suggestions. Today my physio suggested and I might be trying to over-supinate to compensate for trying to avoid pronating. :sad2:

Otherwise though I've been told I'm night and day from last week and making great improvement on stability and balancing. They didn't put me on treadmill this week but we did start impact landings. Much harder than it sounds!

I'll try to see if there's a Running Free store around. Running Room has a lot of good recommendations so I might give them another shot since I didn't know much about my foot needs when I went in there. I spent some time looking at insoles today too. A lot of them seem really hard, with no gel on the top and I'm afraid that while I need support I don't want something without cushion.

Did you orde a RoadID bracelet? I was looking at their products yesterday and wanted to get one but I've not ever seen one before so I wasn't sure about them. Do you like them? I had difficulty with the medical history part because while I don't have a history of it, there is a heart disease history in my family which is probably important (especially if I'm going out of country and running in heat). How to shorten it though is difficult.

Good luck with your run! I hope it's pain free and fun!
