Hakuna Matata - Gobbling up the pavement and thankful we can!

Hi team! Happy Monday!

I spent the weekend with my family - they decided they wanted to go shopping in the US because of the Rememberance Day holiday and the exchange rate. So we hopped in the car and went over to Michigan. Everyone behaved and so it was a fun trip :) I also convinced them to go to Olive Garden - we use to have Olive Garden restaurants in Canada but they all closed down maybe 10 years ago? So I missed that - plus I'm a carb fiend so I love pasta! I picked up some running gear while I was down there. I bought a pair of Nike Triax Structure 13 shoes and a pair of fleece running gloves. No running jackets at the Nike outlet - go figure. I figured I'd give the Nike shoes a shot since the NB were working out. I wanted to get a pair now so that if they worked out, I could order a few pairs to be shipped to the hotel. Other than that, I also shopped at the Banana Republic outlets, they had an additional 30% off coupon so I grabbed a bunch of stuff for work and Coach had an additional 20% off so I picked up a few Christmas gifts there :)

Mike - Thanks for the offer! No worries, I can't afford anything illegal anyway  I'd need a much (much) better job for that. Thanks for the RR and congrats on your new PR! And to Liz as well!

Dave - Congrats to Sally on her new job! The end of the contract sounds like perfect timing for Disney. You can get Tonga Toast at Captain Cooks (counter service) or at Kona Café. Both are in the Polynesian - I don't really like bananas so I don't really eat it myself but I've heard great things about it. I've read that you can ask to substitute the bananas for apples but when I tried it, the waitress said that I couldn’t.

Kim - :wave2: I hear ya! I gotta pick up the training for the full as well! January is just around the corner! But great advice about being undertrained vs. injured. I think I will most definitely be in the undertrained group! WTG on your 16 miler!

Hope - The cupcake looks wonderful! I love the blue color! Where is your wedding reception being held?

Emily - Good luck on your offer! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Elizabeth - Congrats on your 10K! Fantastic time especially since you walked most of it! I get shin splints every so often too in races and agree that they are tough to shake. I'll have to ask my chiro for some tips.

Sue - How many miles were you planning on? I agree with you on the TM - I'd rather be outside. I try explaining that to non-runners but they don't understand :) Have fun in Chicago! I hope you get good weather! pixiedust: for DD! I hope she's doing okay.

Margie - Thanks for the butt kick! I needed it (badly). Congrats on your 5K race!! Second place is awesome!! Wish I could have come and seen you this weekend but I wasn't close enough. We'll have to do a mini DIS meet in the spring! How's Sara doing?

Connie - pixiedust: Hope you feel better soon! WTG on getting all your Christmas shopping done! I'll have to get mine done soon - I don't want to go near a mall in Decmeber. I'm not a fan of crowds and shopping indoors with a heavy winter jacket :)

Lynn - I'm shipping the tights to my friend in the US. Hopefully I'll get them soon. Knock on wood but the weather has been relatively warm here so I'm hoping the snow stays away for as long as possible. Sounds like you and Scott had a fabulous time at Disney! I love going for W&D! When is the Spacecoast half? I saw pictures of the medals one year and that race is on my to-do list!

AFM - I split my session last night into training and treatment. I did another round of Graston including one on both shins. Ouch! But even when I had ART done on my shins, it wasn't pleasant. I have a little bit of bruising on my knee and shins. Thank goodness for knee high boots! No running for me until Thursday morning and then I'll have to see where it goes from there. So count me in as undertrained. Not sure if I'm going to be able to get in a 20 miler LR before January.

So I'm starting to look at taking classes and possibly a career change. I know a lot of people say it but I'm really not a 9 to 5, sitting at my desk all day kind of person. I like the people I work with but some days I feel like I'm never going to get more responsibility or anything like that. I'm looking into something health care related like a physican assistant or nutrition. I guess I'm going to sound like I'm 90-years-old for a minute here but when I went to school, tuition was $3,500. How do people afford to go to school nowadays? I have a friend taking an MBA who's paying $20K/year in tuition. So this kind of conflicts with the whole buying a place idea :(

I was talking to one of the trainers at my gym about the police physical. One of my friends is taking it and having a tough time with it. We agreed that I could easily do it with little prep but I'm not sure if it's something I'd want to do. Although once a upon a time I did want to do forensics … before shows like CSI were cool ;) Not sure if I could handle idea of working an overnight shift. So I'm giving myself all of next year to research and figure out what I want to do :) And if anyone has suggestions feel free to jump in!

Hey team! :wave2:

Just popping in to see how everyone is doing! The Baker household is coming along just fine. Gage had his 9 month check up yesterday and he is 23 lbs and 29 inches (although it seemed to me he was still bending his leg when the nurse marked the length). He's getting over a double ear infection...wow, was that NOT fun!

I have had an off and on cold for a month now since we got home from the Wine and Dine. I was trying to rest up and get over all symptoms, but I am getting the itch to run so I think tomorrow I will head out and hit the streets...even if for only a short 2 miles.

Yesterday I won a weight loss challenge at work. We all put $75 into a pot and needed to loos 7% of our body weight in 7 weeks. Whomever doesn't make their goal losses their money to those of us that did. Sooo...I hate to be evil, but I am hoping alot of people lost!! I need more Christmas money!!

Vickie - Where in MI did you go? I used to live there...they do have some great shopping! And Olive Garden...yummmmy, but I do prefer Buca! I'm not a 9-5 person either, but I do miss it some days now that I am back to shift work. Nothing like being home for dinner and taking evening walks. I miss that stuff....and I always had more time for DIS when I sat at a desk!!

Connie - Ugh...stomach bugs are the worst! Glad you are feeling better!

Scott and Lynn - I have been keeping up with your trip on FB. I hope we will be able to meet up on the 3rd!!

Dave - What a nice guy making Sally dinner! I always love it when Jordan does stuff like that :thumbsup2

Mike - Great race report...I must say I do like racing in the cold. Layers can be shed!!

Hope - Looks like you had a great birthday in WDW. And was that a lino I saw in your FB pics? Lucky girl!!

To any new members that I may not know...HI! I'm Eva...I have a bio on the bio page. I'm not in here as much as I should be. I have a 9 month old that keeps me pretty busy. Anywho...nice to meet ya! :flower3:

OK...off to work....

Hi Everyone!

I'm sorry if this is not the proper way to do this but I'm looking to join a W.I.S.H. team. I've been trying to pick for a couple days now and I feel like y'all would be a great fit, if you'd have me. I totally understand if not, but I figured I'd take a leap of faith and ask.

Welcome, Saylan!

You are more than welcome to join our little team! Tell us a bit about yourself. We have intros to people on the team on the first page of each thread and would love to add you to the lineup!

:grouphug:party::welcome:

Yes please join us. Ya have to tell us all about you since we will all be friends.

Awww, thanks for the welcomes!

A little about me, huh? Hmm...

I'm from the frosty north of Canada and I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times) and I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

A little backstory:
I'm running and training alone but I'm trying to stay focused. I didn't think running was for me (going faster than 4 miles an hour walking on the treadmill was horrible!) but I'm working on that and now I'm addicted.

I bought new running shoes just for running but found I had knee pain. I ended up returning them and getting different ones (which I may also be returning due to wrong supports) but I'm still recovering. I pronate (as I'm sure many do) and my knee turns inwards on one side while running so I'm now receiving physio therapy from a sports clinic here. I get to re-learn how to walk while I'm trying to run so I have a 'fun' challenge to say the least.

I do a walk/run ratio of 1:2 minutes on the treamill three times a week with an overall pace of about 11:50 min/mile. Normally, 30 mins Tuesday/Thursday and a longer run on either Saturday or Sunday. I'm looking to up the Tuesday/Thursday runs (I usually get about 2.5 miles in 30 mins) to about 3 miles but I had to take a week off two weeks ago due to starting therapy and a nasty cold. I'm determined to bounce back though.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what else to add since this is my first bio, so if I missed something, just let me know! Thanks for having me!

Welcome Saylan! What part of Canada are you from? Sue, Kim and myself are also from Canada - I'm in Toronto and they're just a little bit outside of the city.

There are a couple of us heading down for the Princess half as well! So you'll have lots of company for training!

I'm part of the knee pain club too - I did something to mine shortly after a race at the end of August and never really let it heal properly. Now I'm trying to balance the miles with recovery to make sure I get to marathon weekend in january. So I feel your pain!

I'm actually not far from you! I'm south-west of Toronto (a few hours out and closer to the border). I have many relatives in the Toronto/GTA.

I'll be glad for the company. I'm terrified right now from a few things, mostly race related. I've never run in a race after track and field days, plus in another country? Very nerve wracking. I'm currently trying to figure out if it's worth trying for a 10K marathon around here to have a time to submit for the corral placement :confused3. I think I could do 10K since I'm doing 5mile runs on Saturdays now but those are all on the treamill. I don't know what time is needed for a 10K to improve your corral placement either.

I wish I could say I'm glad I'm not suffering alone but knee pain is never fun so I'm sorry to hear we're in the same boat. What are you doing to work on recovery for it?

Sounds like your well on your way Saylan. As for the shoes go to a running specialty store that can analaze your gait and tell you what you need. Then you can try on every shoe, yes every one, that fits the catagory and then pick what feels best. Make sure you walk around and even jog around the store in the ones that feel the best.

I'm a pure walker, my distance pace is usually around 12 min a mile for the half and 13 mpm for the full. I can barely squeek under 33 min for a 5K. Sally is brand new to exercise and has 2 5Ks and a 10K under her belt. Disney will be her first half and I'm trying to get her ready to walk it just to finish.

Good luck with your training and join us as often as you can.

I'd say go and do the 10K race :thumbsup2 You'll get a feel for the race atmosphere, learn how your body handles running for an hour or so and as what as what you'll want to eat pre-race (ie. what sits well in your stomach and what doesn't and how much energy you'll get).

I don't know much about corral placement time. It depends on the race but I'll go ahead and guess that a pace of <8:00-8:30 m/m will get you into Coral A, 8:30-10:00 m/m will put you into Coral B, 10-12 m/m in Coral C, and Coral D >12:00 m/m. Just a guess ...

Although I heard with the princess last year people with 1/2 marathon times of 2:15 were getting into Coral A. In January, my 58:00 10K time put me into Coral C - but that was a much bigger race. If you're planning on finishing faster than 2:45, then definitely do a race and submit a time.

HTH! :goodvibes

Sadly the two stores I've been to are running specialty stores. The ones I have now are good shoes, but I'm just not convinced that they're supporting me the right way. It might just mean I should look into insoles though...

Thanks and I will!

I think the earliest/nearest ones are in Whitby this month. It's soooooo cold though to run outside!

The longest I'm running consecutively so far is about an hour now which comes out to just over 5 miles. I've been warned though that the 5 mile mark is when I would start to feel the wall and should start training with supplements to help me get used to them for the half.

I have no idea if I'll even come close to 2:45, to be honest, but I figured if I do say a 10K and give a time, the worst they do is say "no, not good enough you're in the last corral" and that's where I'd be anyways if I didn't put a time in.

Ideally (and I haven't told anyone here at home yet) if I do well, I might try for the coast-to-coast medal. It's just a thought right now but I'm really eager to try for it.

Welcome Saylan! :)

Regarding the shoes, did they put you on a treadmill and watch and record you running? Without that, they are REALLY only guessing. If they DID, go back and explain to them what the issues are.

However, I might not be so quick to blame it on the shoes. What part of your knee hurts though? It almost sounds like it could be a classic case of too much too soon and irritation of the IT band, which has nothing at all to do with the shoes and everything to do with too much too soon. I speak from experience there - I pushed to do a 10K (nowhere near a marathon - marathons are 26.2 miles; a 10K is, well, a 10K) with 2 weeks' notice to try and get into a timed corral. I succeeded, but I put myself out of commission in doing too much too soon. My training plan said unequivocally THREE DAYS OFF with an injury. FULL days - meaning it hurt on Sunday, so I had to take Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off, then try a little on Thursday and see how it felt. Luckily some friends had linked me up with some yoga stretches and I was able to start back.

Make sure your physio knows that you're still running, and that they are ok with that. And above all, do NOT increase your mileage/time more than 10% each week. Any more than that and you're really asking for an injury.

Beth I'm the poster child for over doing and to much to soon and all the rest of the bad stuff. I know better and I still push the envelope.

Oh, I know the feeling! Take, for example, my upcoming race schedule...

11/25 - 5M Prospect Park Turkey Trot
12/4 - NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K
12/11 - NYRR Jingle Jog (4M)
12/19 - NYRR Ted Corbitt 15K
12/31 (1/1) - NYRR Emerald Nuts Midnight Run
1/7 - WDW Buzz and Woody's Best Friends 5K
1/8 - WDW Half Marathon

All the races pretty much fit right into my training plan schedule. But still!

~beth

PS ~ Margie...yep. I added another one. The 15K is new.

I did the Whitby Waterfront 10K last year and I think it was close to 10C outside. It was warm enough that I went in shorts and a long sleeved shirt. Unheard of for November right? It's a well organized race and the lunch they give you afterward is yummy!

If you wanted to wait for a bit to try a 10K or wanted to run a second race, there's one in Toronto in December. I think it's called the Tannebaum something or other. Some of the Resolution Runs (Running Room) in London and Sarnia also have 10K running options. I think with the races, you'll want to make sure that they're chip timed. That way you'll be able to submit something to Disney. Make sure you get some outdoor mileage before the Princess. The TM and outdoors aren't the same!

As for the running stores, I get a different opinion depending on who's assessing my running. I've been told that I need stability shoes by one person and motion control shoes by another. I've also talked to people who have told me that they don't believe in all the different types of support shoes and to go with whatever feels comfortable. Show your shoes to your physio and see what they have to say about it. Also most stores will let you take the shoes home and run on the TM to try them out.

Thanks Margie!

Gee...I feel like such a little race piglet in December!!! Come on team! Surely there are Jingle Bell Jogs and Rudolph Runs out there! LOL.

Margie - I have lost a total of 50 lbs since I was pregnant. Does that count though with the baby and all? I think I came home from the hospital the same weight I went in at though due to water retention and all after giving birth. I guess any way you look at it...50 lbs in 9 months is pretty good! :cool1:

Emily- I hope the offer on the house goes through! If not there is a house that just went up for sale on my street? Any intereste in moving to MI?? Our winters are GREAT!:rotfl:

Hope- That cupcake looks SOOO GOOD!!! Sorry you got sick! Never a fun way to spend a vacation! It is nice to meet another Disney Bride!! I got married at the Wedding Pavilion in 2007 and had our reception at the VIP lounge in the living Seas! Where are you having your locations?

Kim- Great to have you stop by! Good luck with the training!

Mike- When is the Rock N Roll half? I'm going to be in school all summer (4 days a week 8-5:scared1:) so I don't know if I'll be able to do any summer races. Congrats on the PR!! Maybe you are just a cold weather runner! Like Liz I always seem to make a new friend during races too!

Elizabeth- Congrats on finishing your first 10K!! Sorry about the shins! I know what that feels like! I tried a new warm up technique of ankle pumps (just pointing and flexing my foot) before workouts and races and it seems to help a lot!

Sue Must have been a bad weekend for stairs! A fellow student also fell down the stairs this weekend! Something must have been off with the earth's gravitational pull! Have fun in Chi town! I'll wave at you from across the lake!

Lynn- Glad you made it home safe! Too bad you couldn't bring some of that nice weather with ya!

Connie Glad you are feeling better! Congrats on the Christmas shopping! Mine will be light this year, just not a lot of wiggle room in the budget with me back at school!

Vicky I hope the Graston is still going well for you! Nice to know you were in Michigan! Which outlet did you visit? I rarely make it over to that side of the state but am always up for a shopping trip! Good luck on the career change! I can tell you I LOVE my new career and haven't even started officially yet! If you have any Physical Therapy questions please let me know!

Eva Nice to meet you! That 9 month old must keep you pretty busy! I am an aunt to a 3 month old and she keeps me busy without even being mine!

Saylan Welcome!:dance3: I"m a newer member here too and everyone has been great! I live in South west Michigan so we are kinda close! Sounds like you have a good bit of training going!

Margie I thoroughly enjoyed my rest day! I signed up for the Turkey Trot too so you can put me on the race calendar for that one!

AFM- I'm feeling pretty sore today! Not sure if it is from the race or my tumble down the stairs. I know my right arm and butt is from the stairs but believe my left hip flexor is from the run. Taking it nice and easy today and doing as much stretching as I can. Back at it tomorrow!
