Hakuna Matada - Racing into January!

What are you eating before and after your runs? It might just be that your body doesn't have enough fuel or protein for recovery.

I run early in the mornings as well, and I usually have a 1/2 cup of apple juice 10 minutes before my maintenance runs and a slice of toast with almond butter before my Long Runs (and I bring GUs if the Long Runs are more than an hour long).

Then after a run, I make myself a protein shake, or have an actual breakfast that has both carbs and protein, to give my body what it needs to recover. I usually do that right after stretching so it falls within 30 minutes of the end of the run.

Good Morning Team! Been having lots of issues with DIS lately!

Vicky - Next trip is AbD to South Africa in Feb. Altitude can really make a difference, I did not realize that until I moved to altitude. Have fun with the dragonboat! We have registered for the DL 5K, and will probably volunteer at registration again this year.

Dave - DIS boards have been REALLY SLOW for us also! Good job on the healthy lifestyle!

Kim - Good job on the food!

Sue - We are headed to South Africa in Feb. You will find time for the swims!

Tandy - Sorry you had to deal with the wind, it has been really windy here also - 50mph the other day - generally 30-40mph. Scott was also very bummed out when he was told not to run, he still has not quite made peace with the matter, but biking helps. Glad you are enjoying school. Good luck on the honors program!

Kimberly - Welcome to the group! Disney races are good for “first” races, but not good for PR’s (too crowded in spots and too many distractions - characters to take pictures of around the course). DH could try walking or cycling (we have taken up cycling as the knees are causing problems for both my DH and myself, before that I was always a walker while DH was the runner).

America - Welcome to the group!

Rick - You will have no problem running the Dopey next year! After all, it is only a few miles more than the Goofy!

Elizabeth - Good luck with the PT appt today, hope you are OKed to run again!

Saylan - Great job to your father!

AFM - Weather has been off and on here, one good day, lots of wind, have not been outside for dog walk in 2 days, but have gotten on the spin bike on a regular basis. So far, 2 days of good eating (after all the chocolate covered macadamia nuts were gone!)

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi, everyone,

Just a quick post to say that I'm now not allowed to do any exercise for the next week until my visit with the PT again. By the time that I got to my appointment, I could barely move from pain in my right hip, upper and lower back. They still say that it is muscular.

Feeling a bit down because I can't train for the Princess but this is also a lesson in patience. I appreciate your encouraging posts that this treatment is sound because if I didn't have you telling me to listen to the doc and PT, then I know that I would have already tried to run more than once. See what I mean about the lesson in patience? ;)

Kimberly: Did the fatigue start when you began running?

Vicky: Can't wait to hear about the Dragon boat practice!

Tandy: Yay for pursuing the honors program! Wishing you good luck but it doesn't sound like you'll need it with your DH's support. :thumbsup2

To everyone else: Happy to read about your training, weight loss, healthy eating successes; keep it up!

Good morning team.

I'm starting the morning tickled, I weighed in at 179.4 this morning, first time I've seen the scale show unde 180 in about 2 years. Cutting out beer and cutting out a lot of processed food is working. Along with increasing my exercise intensity.

I'll be doing a hard 4 miler this moning before work. Might have a nap to before leaving for work.

Pixey dust to all who are feeling aches and pains. Let's all get back to being well and strong.

Have a magical day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hey RunRookie! Honestly, I don't eat much and never have bc I'm running so darn early in the morning and have NEVER been a breakfast eater. It has never bothered me before. I do drink a cup of juice when I'm done though. The idea of eating then does make me a bit nauseous but maybe I'll give it a try.

windwalker - congrats! :cheer2: I'm so happy for you! It must have felt great to see that!

es45 - I'm sorry about the wait on running, but it's better to get completely better so you'll be back to it sooner! Yes, but I don't know if it's bc of the running or bc of the early morning hours I have to get up to do it (4:30 am)

LynnG - africa? that is SOOO cool! it's definitely on my bucket list - are you planning on doing any running there? how cool would that be?!?!?!?

Hockeychic - I'm keeping fingers/toes crossed you find an exercise that works for you!

To everyone else - keep it up!:cheer2:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Congrats!

Elizabeth - PD for a fast recovery, hope you feel better soon! Hope he will let you at least swim or walk soon.

Kimberly - No running in Africa, but I am sure there will be quite a bit of walking and hiking!

AFM - Got in our usual dog walk yesterday, about 25 min of exercise, then spent most of the day cleaning house - tonight we are hosting the team for the MS bike ride for a get together and fundraising brainstorming session. We will continue to clean house today, and Scott will be cooking Chicken and Yellow Rice. Today weather is pretty ugly, 20 degrees, 20-30mph wind and snow. Snow should stop shortly, but weather guy says we hit our high at midnight, and it will continue getting cooler during the day! Current windchill: -8.6F :scared1:

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Scott just reminded me - there is one excursion on our South Africa trip that involves bike riding - so we can add that to the list.

Happy Friday team! Does anyone have plans for the weekend? For some reason I seem to have beignets on the brain. I don't know why that would be Lynn and Scott :cutie:  Well, if they turn out I'll post some pictures.

Lynn - The bike ride excursion sounds fun! Is it through the city or the country side? Do you guys have any safety concerns? I had to convert -8.6F to Celsius ... that's -22C! :scared1: indeed! Stay warm! Your pups must be loving the cold weather though!

Dave - Congrats on the weight loss! You're going to be lean, mean and full of grrrr! in no time at all! Good luck on your 4 miler! Is Sally going with you? The boards have been slow for me as well.

Elizabeth - Sorry to hear about the no exercising order. Look at it this way ... rest is an important part of training so I wouldn't say you're completely out of it. But I know how tough it is to sit on the sidelines when you'd rather be training. When I irritated my piriformis a few years ago and took out my back a few years ago, I was sidelined before a race as well. My PT was wonderful and gave me a lot of strengthening exercises that I still use to this date. As Kim always says, better to be undertrained going into a race than to be injured and overtrained. Sending lots of pixiedust: your way and hoping your PT has good news for you!

Kimberley - I have the same issues with food and running in the morning. I find that glass of juice, half a granola bar, or even a cookie is great to eat before a morning run. Depending, on how long your run is, it's important to give your body a bit of fuel otherwise you'll tire very quickly. And also the obvious... make sure you're getting enough sleep at night :goodvibes

Thanks for the tip on the med tent! I've only ever stopped there to grab some Tylenol. I didn't know that they can deactivate your chip on the spot. Yikes

Kim - Do you have free weights/dumb bells at home? Try doing a curl and press exercise. Or pushups are also great exercises for your arms! Did you register for Goodlife yet? I forgot to ask last night at the practice but I don't think you have to be an employee of the company to be part of the dragon boat team. I think there were a few people who weren't. My massage therapist also has a team so I can find out what their workout/race schedule is like. I'm thinking the paddling will be a good exercise for the arms.

:pixiedust for your thigh! I hope it's nothing serious. Ice it after you workout. I've found that icing helps even if the body part you're icing doesn't hurt. And yikes to Goodlife training starting on Monday!

Sue - I've seen people running in shorts which has been suitable for the weather but just crazy because it's January. Unfortunately, I see we have snow today :( I have a HR monitor for my Garmin but haven't used it before  Maybe I'll give it a try on the weekend. I hope the snow doesn't stick on the ground.

Say … any chance you'd be interesting in doing the Goodlife 1/2? :)

Tandy - I read zombiethon at first  Hope the event turns out well and you have tons of fun! Is it a fundraiser? I second Kim's question! What do you do for your arms :goodvibes

Congrats on your decision to do the honors program! :thumbsup2 I hadn't thought about the possibility of scholarships so that's a definite bonus! I'm so excited for you!

Yes! The trainer I work with is pretty hard core! I'm thinking if he's not going to push me then I might as well workout myself. He's really competitive so I think this is right up his alley. Normally I'd love to give an obstacle course a try but the list Saylan posted is a bit daunting!

Saylan - My advice is always to err on the side of caution because I tend to get injured more often than most people. The best thing to do is to decide what you want to get out of the races and running - if it's mileage or fun, then go for it! If you're looking to build up speed or for a PB, I would be more selective. But that's just me. I have a friend who does "back to back" Ironman competitions and has never had anything more than post race knee soreness. Lucky! I could never do that

I'm going to to workout with my trainer tonight so I'm going to ask him about the list of obstacles. The electric fence is scary - I know they have you sign the disclaimer form but isn't 10,000 volts dangerous? Of course I hate being shocked getting out of the car so what do I know

Your dad walks fast! There are days that I barely run 12 m/m! LOL And yes, I am for sure doing Midsummer's Night. :thumbsup2

AFM - I went to the dragon boat practice last night! It was more of a boot camp - several exercise stations and groups of 3-4 that rotate a few times around. They're going to start paddling practice in the pool next week. The people there were all really nice and there were a few runners and one Ironman.

I'm going to be honest and say that I found the boot camp exercises easy. I was kind of hoping that they would kick it up and make it hard but there were a lot of people on the ground huffing and puffing. I guess it's a good thing they didn't. One thing I didn't like was that the coach wasn't walking around and making sure that people were doing exercises properly. I looked up once while everyone was doing planks and notice there were people who had their backs arched, tense shoulders or could have had their hips lower etc. I didn't think that was very good. I know how to do a lot of the boot camp stuff because I've worked with a physio and a trainer but a lot of people didn't seem to know the proper form and I was worried they could injure themselves.

I guess I went in with higher expectations because I was told the team was competitive ... Maybe the pool paddling will be harder. :confused3 Because the workouts are a few hours a week, if I'm committing time to it... I want to make sure I'm on a good team. There I said it - I'm competitive, I want to win :cutie:

Anyway, I ended up smashing my left knee onto the gym floor last night  One of the boot camp exercises was similar to one I do with my trainer where I push a sandbag back and forth across the gym. This time, it was just a cloth. I almost did a face plant into the floor because I'm use to having some weight when I'm pushing. Instead my knee went into the floor. I'm sure I'll have a nice purple bruise there by tonight.

Not much planned for the weekend! Just relaxing, a bit of baking and running a few errands :)

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

My husband attempted running the 1/2 this past trip, but shin splints caused him injury. I actually had to backtrack to help him to a med tent which lost me about 15 minutes but worth it. Just an FYI, if you need to go to a med tent, make sure you are okay with not going on in the race. They immediately determined my dh was not going to run anymore and used a machine (reminded me of a register scanner) to blip his bib off. Although dh was disappointed, he understood; however, another woman in the med tent had a hysterical meltdown when they did it to her.

You can definitely put my races on the calendar - it will keep me honest! I also have a four mile one on 3/17 in Green Island, NY which I already signed up for and intend to do a 10k in October in Clifton Park, NY and the 15k Stockadethon (supposed to be the oldest race in the country-I did it last year) in Schenectady, NY in november, but I don't have the exact dates yet.

I added the four miler on March 17 ... let me know when you have the dates for the 10K and the 15K and I'll get 'em in :thumbsup2

Good Afternoon Team!

Elizabeth, Sorry to hear about no exercising.

Vicky, I had thought about doing GLife but really want to focus on the tri training.
Was the Dboat trainer a proper trainer or was someone from work doing the training? Like you said that's how people hurt themselves.

Dave, Nice job on the weightloss and eating well.

Lynn, Stay warm!

A weekend of skiing for us.
Have a great weekend and training everyone...........Sue

What a wonderful day to be us, good morning team.

Sally and I will do an hour walk this morning and then have breakfast out before I head off to work.

Sally hasn't started seeing the results yet on the scale but I can tell she has firmed up a bit. I'm in a smaller pant size already. Many years ago when I retired from the Air Force, I had a 30" waist, my goal is to get at least to a 32" again.

Training is going very well, my left achillies is still an issue and probably always will be. I'm icing and stretching and working on my left calf muscle a lot so that's about all I can do for that.

Have an awesome day guys and anyone who is running Tink, good luck.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning team and happy Saturday!!!!

Dave: Sorry the achilles is still bothering you. It appears that, as we age, our injuries don't really go away anymore! No one told me how hard it was to get older. :laughing:Hope you and Sally enjoy your walk and breakfast today.

Sue: Enjoy skiing. Do you have a ski resort really close? Must be nice. I grew up in a ski resort town and loved being able to ski whenever I wanted.
Oh, and believe it or not, I'm just now going for my associates. It's 2.5 more years for that, then 2 years for BSN. Masters will probably have to wait for some job time.

Vicky: Sorry to hear that you hurt your knee. That stinks! I hope it's nothing more than a bruise. Too bad the practice wasn't more challenging. But, maybe they're just trying to see where everyone is at right now, before the real work begins. I must always stay at POFQ now because of those darn beignets. I love them so!

Vicky and Kim: I do a routine just once a week, at mos,t that incorporated bicep curls, tricep dips, shoulder circles, three different shoulder sets with weights and then, on to the Bowflex for an all over upper body workout. Plus planks and pushups. When I go to zumba a lot, I don't have to do the routine because we do a few songs that have an arm routine (thank you Monica). I'm just naturally very muscular and have great muscle memory.

Kim: I love Bob, but yeah, that doesn't sound like the right routine for you right now. Better find another option!

Lynn: BRRRRRR!!! I am not ready for those kinds of temps yet. It's been the warmest winter ever here, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. When is your MS bike ride? Someday, I will get a good enough bike to do our MS 150, but it would just kill me now. Chocolate covered macadamia nuts sound delicious. Now, I'm hungry.

Kimberly: I don't eat before a run either. Unless it's over 8 or so miles. I just don't like to eat breakfast if I can help it. But, it definitely helps performance.
As far as your hubby, I'm kind of in his shoes. I've been told by all those in the know that I'm not built for running either, and yet, I run. And, pretty darned fast too. If he can't find anything he likes as much, he might have to just do what he feels. :thumbsup2

Elizabeth: Sorry you're in so much pain. :hug:I have only had lower back pain once, but it was horrible. I just felt so vulnerable.

AFM: I am so wiped out right now from zumba that I can't believe it. It wasn't 2 hours, it was 2 hours and 15 minutes! The instructors kept rotating in and out so they could rest. At about 1:45, I didn't think I could continue. It was super high impact, and I sweat so much that Frank had to get away from me when I got home.

And, here's the best news of all: I ran an entire mile yesterday with NO PAIN!!!!! I'm going to try ice skating today, I think, so we'll see how it all goes.

Oh, and I'm down another pound. Just 7 to go!

I have so much homework this weekend, that I'm feeling overwhelmed, so no more procrastinating. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - The biking in South Africa is thru the wine region, so I would say country side. There are safety concerns in Johannesburg - we have arranged for cars to pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel and from the hotel to the train. The train advertises that they have security. I don’t think Cape Town is as bad, more a normal city anywhere for crime. Once we meet up with Adventures by Disney, then we will not have anything to worry about. The pups do love the cold weather (as long as the wind is not blowing at 50mph). Hope you did not hurt your knee too badly on the gym floor!

Dave - Keep stretching! Say Hi to Sally for us!

Sue - As usual, it is warming up again, should be in the 30’s today and 45 tomorrow - but - still windy.

Tandy - I definitely agree with you about injuries and age! Congrats on weight loss!

AFM - Our MS bike team get together went well last night, we spent the day cleaning house, cooking and hauling stuff downstairs then back up, so I feel that I definitely got my exercise in. Never got dogs for a walk, but gave them big soup bones, so that kept them occupied while we were entertaining. A little warmer today, still windy, but I don’t think it is going to be in the 50mph range, I am expecting more of the 20-30mph today, so, hopefully, will get dogs out for a walk.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team!

Everyone must be enjoying the weekend! We spent yesterday working on our plans for our South Africa trip, but did manage to get dogs out for a walk, in wind 20-30mph, with a few gusts a bit higher because I would get Knocked off balance.

Have a great day all!

Hello
Wondering if your team has room for one more member? I have a few friends and family members who like to run. I have even more friends and family who like to go to Disney. But friends and family who specifically want to run at Disney? Not so much! That is why I am here.

My name is Robbie, I am 37 and reside in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I have two boys (7,2) and a little lady (5).

Formerly a “bigger guy”, I got into running about three years ago, and have completed 2 half marathons, a 10K race, and a team relay event where I had to run 17K. This year, I am planning another half in May in Halifax, Nova Scotia, then my first full Marathon here on PEI in October…all in preparation for Goofy (maybe Dopey) next January.

At the risk of becoming an unpopular dad, and unless I can convince someone to go down with me, my trip to WDW next January will likely be solo…so it would be nice meet a few folks so maybe I can know someone when I get down there.

Welcome to my fellow Canadian. I love PEI, only been once but it was so beautiful.

We are a very friendly, supportive group and glad to have you on board. We have alot of teammates that come solo but no one is ever alone we had alot of team meets in 2012.

Would love to hear about your journey.

Kim

Hi team.

Robbie: Welcome to the group. We have lots of Canadians here (not me of course). You'll fit right in. I ran Goofy in 2011 and had an amazing time. From our little group, all but 2 of us went down for marathon weekend this year, so you can find lots of support.

Lynn: How long will you be in South Africa? Biking through the wine country sounds lovely. I would be a little nervous in Johannesburg, so I'm glad you're taking precautions.

AFM: Managed to get all of my work done by 10 this morning. I had to write 3 papers, read a ton, and answer some strange psychology questions. Then, there's all the algebra homework. Yuck.

Going out for a walk today and hoping to get another mile run in. I think I'll start ramping it back up next week. I had to rest all day yesterday. No sleep and the zumba wore me out.

I guess I'm going to give in today and watch the Pro Bowl. I don't really like it, but am already having football withdrawal. And, since I won't see my Packers next Sunday, this is my last chance for the year. ;)

It's been a good week, I had 29.5 miles of total training with 4 hard days and to easy days. I'm excited about how training is going. I'm having great success with eating healthier and sleeping an extra hour per night. I officially weigh tomorrow and fully expect to be below 180 lbs.

Does anyone know if free dining is still being offered and if so is there a link you could share? I'm thinking of a trip without a race for mid september. I have some important races in late sept/early oct. The state games that are the qualifier for the national senior olympics and the USATF Masters competition which is the trials for the US team that will go to the world cup. (I don't experct to get to the world cup but I do expect to win state.) The sept trip will be a good taper week before those races.

I would like to do the free dining in January also like some of you did this time. I expect to have my weight down to where the Pig Feasts will not be an issue.:rolleyes1

Yes plenty of great Canadian friends on the team.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Dave - Pigging out after the races is mandatory ;) I'm kidding! I couldn't tell you had weight to lose! You and Sally looked great!

If you go over to the Dining board, you'll find the thread for the Free Dining watch. In fact, I think there's a whole section there for the dining plan - what you can and can't get at the restaurants. I'm hoping they offer it again too.

Tandy - Wow that's a lot of homework! But I want to know what the weird psychology questions were  A two hour plus non stop workout would have me passed out on the floor. I am in awe! :worship:

And WTG on the pain-free running! That's huge! I guess a little RnR was all you needed. Let me know on the 10K race and I'll get you added on to the calendar. I can't believe the doctors have said you're not built for running. Clearly, they have never seen you run before!

Sue - Hope you got a lot of skiing in :) Great question on the instructor! I don't know - I'm assuming that he's a Dragon boat instructor but that wouldn't qualify him to run a boot camp. I will ask at the next practice though. I'm curious to see what it's like paddling even if it is in a pool.

Bummer on Goodlife but I know you're focused on the tris this year!

Lynn - I knew a person who had grown up in South Africa and said it still dangerous there. But I'm thinking that if you're in a guided group and especially with ABD, you're good. Was the MS bike meeting to plan an upcoming ride?

Elizabeth - pixiedust: for your back! Hope you're feeling better!

Robbie - :welcome: There's always room for more! Just stick with us, we're the best team on WISH :cutie:

If you want, you can put a bio on the team page, along with your birthday and any races you want to add. It's all optional so there's no rush. If you want to take some time and get to know the team, that's cool too!

Is the half marathon that you're doing the Blue Nose marathon? Are you doing Goofy in 2013? It looks like we'll have another big group of Goofy'ers again next year. And no worries about going solo - a bunch of us did the trip solo last year and it was a blast!

AFM - I swapped my training session to Friday evening so that I could do the Dragonboat stuff on Thursday. This week, my PT and I did a lot of leg work as well as work on the glutes and hamstrings. We did a bit on the arms too pulldowns and TRX rows. He thinks I'm leaning out ... good thing he didn't see the beignets I made today :rolleyes1 Hopefully this link will work...

beignets.jpg

They're worth all the calories! And no I didn't eat them all :goodvibes

I can't believe it's Monday again... and the end of another month! Where did January go? LOL

Have a great evening everyone! :wave2:

Vicky: Yummy, they look delicious! My bag of powdered donuts that I ate last night pales in comparison! :laughing:I have no idea where January went. Heck, I have no idea where 2011 went! The older I get, the faster time is flying by. When is the next practice? Or they just once a week on Thursdays, or more than that? Psychology just wanted to know about social psychological phenomenon like "groupthink" and "deindividuation" and such. Basically, just how does society make us do things that we would never normally do? I'm just not a psychological thinker, apparently.

Dave: I'm pretty sure there has been free dining in September for quite a few years now, but they don't announce it until around March, if I'm not mistaken. I know that over on the dining boards, like Vicky said, they obsess on it until it's announced, so that was a good suggestion.
You're doing a great job on health and fitness and training right now. Keep it up!:thumbsup2

AFM: Getting ready to head out for a run. I'm thinking either 1 or 1.5 today. I need to keep those miles low for awhile still. Since I've scrapped the ultra, I only need to be training for a 10k now, so it takes some pressure off. I walked the dog this morning with his usual 3.25 miles. I'm also thinking about a second walk since I got all my homework done. Then, zumba tonight before the school week sets in.

I hope everyone has a great Monday. :)
