Happy Friday team! Does anyone have plans for the weekend? For some reason I seem to have beignets on the brain. I don't know why that would be Lynn and Scott

Well, if they turn out I'll post some pictures.
Lynn - The bike ride excursion sounds fun! Is it through the city or the country side? Do you guys have any safety concerns? I had to convert -8.6F to Celsius ... that's -22C!

indeed! Stay warm! Your pups must be loving the cold weather though!
Dave - Congrats on the weight loss! You're going to be lean, mean and full of grrrr! in no time at all! Good luck on your 4 miler! Is Sally going with you? The boards have been slow for me as well.
Elizabeth - Sorry to hear about the no exercising order. Look at it this way ... rest is an important part of training so I wouldn't say you're completely out of it. But I know how tough it is to sit on the sidelines when you'd rather be training.

When I irritated my piriformis a few years ago and took out my back a few years ago, I was sidelined before a race as well. My PT was wonderful and gave me a lot of strengthening exercises that I still use to this date. As
Kim always says, better to be undertrained going into a race than to be injured and overtrained. Sending lots of

your way and hoping your PT has good news for you!
Kimberley - I have the same issues with food and running in the morning. I find that glass of juice, half a granola bar, or even a cookie is great to eat before a morning run. Depending, on how long your run is, it's important to give your body a bit of fuel otherwise you'll tire very quickly. And also the obvious... make sure you're getting enough sleep at night
Thanks for the tip on the med tent! I've only ever stopped there to grab some Tylenol. I didn't know that they can deactivate your chip on the spot. Yikes
Kim - Do you have free weights/dumb bells at home? Try doing a curl and press exercise. Or pushups are also great exercises for your arms! Did you register for Goodlife yet? I forgot to ask last night at the practice but I don't think you have to be an employee of the company to be part of the dragon boat team. I think there were a few people who weren't. My massage therapist also has a team so I can find out what their workout/race schedule is like. I'm thinking the paddling will be a good exercise for the arms.

ixiedust for your thigh! I hope it's nothing serious. Ice it after you workout. I've found that icing helps even if the body part you're icing doesn't hurt. And yikes to Goodlife training starting on Monday!
Sue - I've seen people running in shorts which has been suitable for the weather but just crazy because it's January. Unfortunately, I see we have snow today

I have a HR monitor for my Garmin but haven't used it before

Maybe I'll give it a try on the weekend. I hope the snow doesn't stick on the ground.
Say
any chance you'd be interesting in doing the Goodlife 1/2?
Tandy - I read zombiethon at first

Hope the event turns out well and you have tons of fun! Is it a fundraiser? I second Kim's question! What do you do for your arms
Congrats on your decision to do the honors program!

I hadn't thought about the possibility of scholarships so that's a definite bonus! I'm so excited for you!
Yes! The trainer I work with is pretty hard core! I'm thinking if he's not going to push me then I might as well workout myself. He's really competitive so I think this is right up his alley. Normally I'd love to give an obstacle course a try but the list Saylan posted is a bit daunting!
Saylan - My advice is always to err on the side of caution because I tend to get injured more often than most people. The best thing to do is to decide what you want to get out of the races and running - if it's mileage or fun, then go for it! If you're looking to build up speed or for a PB, I would be more selective. But that's just me. I have a friend who does "back to back" Ironman competitions and has never had anything more than post race knee soreness. Lucky! I could never do that
I'm going to to workout with my trainer tonight so I'm going to ask him about the list of obstacles. The electric fence is scary - I know they have you sign the disclaimer form but isn't 10,000 volts dangerous? Of course I hate being shocked getting out of the car so what do I know
Your dad walks fast! There are days that I barely run 12 m/m! LOL And yes, I am for sure doing Midsummer's Night.
AFM - I went to the dragon boat practice last night! It was more of a boot camp - several exercise stations and groups of 3-4 that rotate a few times around. They're going to start paddling practice in the pool next week. The people there were all really nice and there were a few runners and one Ironman.
I'm going to be honest and say that I found the boot camp exercises easy. I was kind of hoping that they would kick it up and make it hard but there were a lot of people on the ground huffing and puffing. I guess it's a good thing they didn't. One thing I didn't like was that the coach wasn't walking around and making sure that people were doing exercises properly. I looked up once while everyone was doing planks and notice there were people who had their backs arched, tense shoulders or could have had their hips lower etc. I didn't think that was very good. I know how to do a lot of the boot camp stuff because I've worked with a physio and a trainer but a lot of people didn't seem to know the proper form and I was worried they could injure themselves.
I guess I went in with higher expectations because I was told the team was competitive ... Maybe the pool paddling will be harder.

Because the workouts are a few hours a week, if I'm committing time to it... I want to make sure I'm on a good team. There I said it - I'm competitive, I want to win
Anyway, I ended up smashing my left knee onto the gym floor last night

One of the boot camp exercises was similar to one I do with my trainer where I push a sandbag back and forth across the gym. This time, it was just a cloth. I almost did a face plant into the floor because I'm use to having some weight when I'm pushing. Instead my knee went into the floor. I'm sure I'll have a nice purple bruise there by tonight.
Not much planned for the weekend! Just relaxing, a bit of baking and running a few errands
Have a great weekend everyone!
