Hakuna Matada - Racing into January!

Good Afternoon Team!

Welcome to the new team members!

Vicky, I survived eating off the "real plate" and passing on the takeout box;)
Great race report.

Tandy, How is school going?

Saylan, What a great dad and fantastic memory!

Lynn, Are you home for awhile or is there another trip soon?

Nothing exciting to report. We are busy with skiing on the weekends.
Working hard on the bike with some running a couple times a week. It's hard work finding a balance between the 2. Next step will be adding in the swim workouts.
Have a day everyone...............Sue

My goodness. So much posting and new people too! I'm not the newest member anymore!

Sue: I'm doing great, thanks for asking. How's the skiing going? Harrison is having so much fun with the ice skating that I'm joining him next weekend. :scared1:

Kim: You should definitely do Goofy. I think we should attempt another weight loss challenge, what do you think?;)

America: Welcome! You are now a member of a totally "Goofy" team. Almost everyone on here has either done it, or will in 2012!:thumbsup2

Rick: I know you can handle Goofy or Dopey next year, depending on what you decide. No worries. You are training the right way and doing a great job. :thumbsup2

Saylan: Your race report made me cry. Seriously, what an amazing thing your dad did. I cannot even imagine. I'm glad he finished strong and you did too.

Radiofanatic: Welcome to our group. You are doing an amazing job with the weight loss and running. What a great friend you have to push you into something that is so great for you. :thumbsup2 I'm on the other side of that 40th birthday (almost 42). Big life changing time!

Lynn: We got your wind again yesterday. It was gusting so bad that I almost got blown over on my walk. Luckily, the dog is lower to the ground. I can't believe that it was cold enough that YOUR dogs wouldn't go out. Wow!

That's the last post my computer will let me see, so I hope I didn't miss anyone. :upsidedow

AFM: I am officially sick to death of not running. I think I'm going to tempt fate this weekend. I am still walking 5 days a week and doing zumba, but I am a runner! Harrison's leg is feeling better, so he's back on the treadmill, but he needs me for his Saturday long runs. So, we'll see.

School is fabulous. All these classes are fun and really make you think. I'm debating doing the honors program. I qualify, but don't know if it's worth it to put the time and money into it?????????I guess we'll see. I have to do 4 honors classes to qualify for "graduating with honors", and I can actually get 2 in this summer, before the Europe trip. So, maybe:confused3

Eating is back on track. I am feeling pretty strong mentally right now with dieting. Let's just hope I can stick to it for more than a few days.

party: :welcome: party:

Welcome RadioFanatic and America! Come on in! We're a group of runners, race walkers, triathletes, cyclists ... You name it, we probably do it :)

We're a pretty open group so you can post whatever - training tips, race reports, nutrition questions, trip reports, personal stories etc. Whatever you like!

If you want, you can post a bio and I'll post it on the front page along with any races you have. There are also a bunch of us on Facebook so if you're on there, we can get you set up with everyone! If you want to just hang out, post a bit and check things out ... you can do that too :goodvibes No pressure!

Was my previous bio enough? My real name is Kimberly and I'm an attorney turning 40 on 10/23, mother of a soon to be 4 year old (2/4) and great supportive husband who pushed me into doing the marathon after doing the 1/2 this year.

I would love to join on FB - where do I go to?

Also have a question. I'm doing a 1/2 in rochester, ny on 4/29, a 1/2 in september in saratoga springs, ny and am either doing the 1/2 or full at the Mohawk Hudson race in october - I would love to have opinions on whether I should try that full in october before the disney race or wait until disney to do the full. the mohawk hudson was in the runner's journal as the best marathon to PR in bc it actually has a small decline from beginning to end and is a straight run literally along the hudson. But I can also just do that as a 1/2 and make disney my first well, just bc it's disney - thoughts?

just requested!

I'm going to send you a bunch of friend recommendations ... They're all people from the team. Just so you don't wonder who everyone is :goodvibes

ETA: Don't feel you have to accept all the friend requests.

/
Sue: Thanks! He is an amazing man, even though we don't always get along (too similar ;)). If you figure out a way to balance all of that, let me know. Sounds like a crazy hectic schedule to manage!

Tandy: Aww,. I'm glad you enjoyed the story as much as I did sharing it. I am so proud of him. I talked to my mom last night and she says he 'may' be talked into more events. I'm pushing for Disney again next year. He's apparently still on an excitement high from it even now.

What field is the program in? I would say totally do honors if you can. It doesn't sound like it's a big difference, but having chosen the other option myself and having worked as an admission officer for grad progams and networking within the academia world, I can tell you, it does make an impact. That one word seems to be a big divider.

Kim: I also vote Goofy! I know you both can rock it (rock it, rocket, lol :lmao:). :thumbsup2

AFM: After talking with Kim, Vicky, and Mike, I'm now looking at many various races in the area to fill my training time between now and January. I'm not used to multiple races so I'm unsure of how long between I should leave for recovery. Not all of us can rock a race a week like Mike and Rick. :rolleyes1

So here's my options as laid out thus far:

May 6: Goodlife Fitness Half (with Vicky and Kim?)
May 27: Women's Half
OR
June 3: Niagara Falls Women's Half (Kim, thanks for the tip on this! Yay wine in a swag bag!)
July 21: Warrior Dash in Barrie (you know you wanna do it Vicky!)
August 18: A Midsummer Night's Run (with Vicky) 30 K
August 25: Women's 10K/5K (undecided)
September 22: Oasis Zoo Run (any one interested?)
October 21: Niagara Falls Half
October 27: Women's 8K/5K

I don't know that I could do both the May 27 and the June 3rd races without difficulty so right now I'm thinking they're one or the other at this point and the prices are about the same. The 10K/8K/5K ones are still just thinking of at this point. And I've scrapped the Tough Mudder for sure because the obstacles sound less fun and more terrifying, but the Warrior Dash sounds entertaining to say the least (plus there's pseudo-bling!)

I'd love to get one in July somewhere if I dont' do the Warrior Dash but thus far I have nada. So thoughts/comments/suggestions/advice is definitely welcomed!

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

RadioFanatic and America: Welcome to the team!

Saylan: Welcome back and congrats to you and your dad!

Tandy: Go honors. Good luck with running this weekend.

Lynn: Welcome back from paradise!

Everyone else:

AFM: My back is better but not back to normal. Doctor said no running until after my PT appt. tomorrow. It is all muscular; nothing more serious. I managed to use the bike for the past few days with little pain. Getting anxious about returning to running as Princess is 29 days away!

Hi team! Happy Wednesday! Work is quite busy so I haven't had a chance to much yet.

Saylan - Glad to see you on the thread! But I know how work and life can get so come by whenever you get a chance. No need to catch up on everyone's posts, just jump in!

That's quite the race schedule you have! If you're just running both of the women's half marathons for fun, then go ahead and do both. If you're doing both for time, I would say to chose one or the other - but that's just me. I tend to err on the side of caution. There was a discount code released for Midsummer's this morning. PUCK gets you $6 off.

I've done the Zoo Run in 2009 and 2010. It wasn't my favourite 10K - the parking is tight and in 2010, the cars were backed out at least a km out of the park. There is also a hill in the middle of the course. It's only about 150-200m (?) but it is extremely steep. That said, the medal is quite nice!

I really liked that pic of you and your Dad on the morning of the half. He's so funny! I didn't even notice the apple core in the picture until he pointed it out. I'll bet it's easy enough to Photoshop out! And I loved the story with your dad! And did I read that right... he walked? That's awesome!!

Let me check out the Warrior Dash when I get home.

Kimberley - :welcome: Does your husband run as well? Congrats on your recent half! :thumbsup2

If you do a full in October, you would have a nice LR to fall back on if (heaven forbid) you got injured between then and the WDW full. But I understand wanting to make WDW your first full. For the October race, are allow you to switch in between the half and the full? You could register for one and then switch if you change your mind.

Do you want me to add the other races to the calendar? No rush :goodvibes

Elizabeth - Don't worry about the running for now! You want to get your back muscles healed! You still have 29 days so plenty of time still left! Keep up with the bike so that you're still getting in cardio. :thumbsup2

Tandy - I'm glad you're loving your classes! It's so exciting! I don't know much about honors classes and such so I can't give you any advice there. But it does sound impressive to be able to say you graduated with honors. Fingers crossed that you're able to get out and run with Harrison on the weekend! Is Harrison excited about his solo trip?

Good job with the eating! I've slipped a back a few times myself since coming back from Disney.

Sue - Let me know the date for your tri and I'll add it to the team calendar. Good job on the eating! Do you have a stand for your bike so that you can ride indoors or have you been out on the streets. It's pretty cold but the roads are fairly clear.

Kim - That would be awesome if you and Mike are in for Goofy! How's Mike's PF doing after the race? I forgot to ask you if the KT Tape held up for the both of you.

Are you planning on doing a run/walk interval for Goofy? For the full, Mike, Eva and I did a 4:1 (run/walk). It wasn't quite same interval recommended by Galloway. The splits probably averaged 10:30 m/m with some being faster and some being slower. Eva and Mike had heart rate monitors and used those to adjust the pace faster or slower.

America - :welcome: Congrats on your full! I'd say being able to finish smiling is the most important - if you're speedy and finish quickly, great :thumbsup2 But if you're not, no worries! I think most of us here are probably midpackers and then there are a few speedy runners mixed in too. I think speed comes with time and a lot of work!

Rick - I printed out both certificates and I think I like the one with the bigger Goofy on it. I think that one was also a little more colorful! Congrats on making into HM Fanatics!

Lynn - I was curious about adjusting to different altitudes after I heard that an actor had passed out at the Sundance Film Festival because of the altitude. When do you leave for your next trip?

AFM - I'm still slowly getting back into the groove of working out. I did some tougher exercises at the gym on Monday. We working on doing jumping lunges which is far worse than jump squats  My PT also mentioned that he was doing the Tough Mudder but after reading Saylan's description with the flames and the electric fence, I think I'll pass. It's one thing to get muddy ... it's another thing to get burned. I'll just live vicariously though my PT

I'm slowly getting my eating back on track as well. I managed to pack lunch for most of the week but I am meeting a friend for lunch tomorrow. I'm having a bit of trouble getting rid of the sugar - so I'm substituting sweets for fruit right now. I'm hoping to eventually cut back on the fruit as well (temporarily). I have to say that it's pretty hard with the cold weather. I just feel like eating comfort food - none of which is low carb or sugar free.

Tomorrow I'm going to check out the Dragonboat practice... I'll let you know how that goes. I ended up talking to my massage therapist and he invited me to join the "better" dragonboat team LOL We'll see.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

FYI ... A little birdie tells me that registration for the DL 1/2 is now at 51%. If anyone is thinking of registering, keep an eye on it this weekend ... The Tinkerbelle Half is taking place this weekend and the numbers may go up a little bit from people registering at the expo or after the race.

Elizabeth: Thanks! Im glad to hear you're getting better but I do hope your PT appt helps you get back into things. It can be really frustrating to be sidelined.

Vicky: Thanks! I know it's not 'necessary' but I hate missing out on other team members posts so it was definitely nagging me. I will hopefully be able to balance things better in the future.

Yes, I think I might be a little adventurous in my goals so slimming it back may be in order. I hadn't really thought of PRing really in anything, but I'm worried two halves so close together might be a little much for me.

Thanks for the tip on the discount code! I've written it down so I don't forget it. You're for sure doing that race then? I'm not sold on the Zoo Run but it does give me something to do in September. I am definitely going to take your advice to heart though since you have way more experience with it than me, but the bling may win out in my trying it just once anyways.

I noticed it after I posted it but not before. I can totally photoshop that sucker out. And yeah, he walked all but I think the last mile or so he said. He is a super fast walker by nature (makes not losing him in a crowd challenging). He walks around a 12min/mile normally which is what he did on race day. That is the pace I did the Princess and the DL running. :rolleyes1

If you're looking for the Warrior Dash site, here it is. The course looks a lot nicer than Tough Mudder by far! There is a fire obstacle but it is much tamer it sounds than the TM one. The TM says a minimum of 4 feet for their flames...

Your trainer is insane, by the way, since the Tough Mudder the obstacles are approximately as follows (in this order starting shortly after the start line):

- 'Death March': a climb up a red-graded ski mountain to the top
- 'Everest': climbing up over a quarter pipe (think snow boarding)
- 'Funky Monkey': money bars (some greased) over ice cold 'lake'
- 'Greased Lightning': a water/mud tarp-like slide downhill
- 'Kiss of Mud': crawling through mud under wire placed 8" off the ground
- 'Boa Constrictor': crawling through industrial-type tubes in muddy water
- 'Kinky Tunnels': a series of dark, wooden corridors that bend and turn along the way
- 'Log Jammin'': going over and under wooden logs
- 'Mystery Obstacle'
- 'Spider's Web': up and over two cargo nets
- 'Berlin Walls #1': a series of wettened 12' wood walls
- 'Bale Bonds': going over hay bales
- 'Walk the Plank': a jump off a board, 15' drop into cold water followed by swimming out
- 'Devil's Beard': navigating under low laying cargo nets
- 'Mud Mile': tough mud-filled trenches
- 'Turd's Nest': a cargo net suspension crossing
- 'Arctic Enema': Icy cold bath in coloured water
- 'Twinkle Toes': crossing a thin wood bridge surrounded by icy water
- 'Blowing Smoke up Your A**': climb up a ladder and jump through to the other side (which is obscurred by smoke)
- 'Cliffhanger': a climb up a mountain trek path
- 'Ball Shrinker': crossing on a 2 rope bridge (one for hands, one for feet) over a mud pit
- 'The Trenches': another mud-filled series of trenches
- 'Hold Your Wood': Carry a log up and then down a ski hill
- 'Mystery Obstacle'
- 'Log bog Jog': running through the woods while hopping over fallen trees
- 'Berlin Walls #2': same as #1, 12', wet, wood walls
- 'Fire Walker': go through kerosene soaked burning straw with flames minimum 4' high
- 'Electroshock Therapy': a field (they hang down) of live wires with shocks as much as 10, 000 volts

Your trainer is absolutely crazy as is my friend who wants me to do this. Luckily the Midsummer's race is that day so that will be better suited for me I think.

My husband attempted running the 1/2 this past trip, but shin splints caused him injury. I actually had to backtrack to help him to a med tent which lost me about 15 minutes but worth it. Just an FYI, if you need to go to a med tent, make sure you are okay with not going on in the race. They immediately determined my dh was not going to run anymore and used a machine (reminded me of a register scanner) to blip his bib off. Although dh was disappointed, he understood; however, another woman in the med tent had a hysterical meltdown when they did it to her.

You can definitely put my races on the calendar - it will keep me honest! I also have a four mile one on 3/17 in Green Island, NY which I already signed up for and intend to do a 10k in October in Clifton Park, NY and the 15k Stockadethon (supposed to be the oldest race in the country-I did it last year) in Schenectady, NY in november, but I don't have the exact dates yet.

Hey team!!!!!

Tandy: I am defiantely in for a weight loss challenge. I have been doing really good since getting back from disney. Although I haven't lost alot of weight in 2 weeks my waist is a bit smaller so all good. WTG on getting the eatting on track that is awesome!!!

Rebecca: I am in for GoodLife and Niagara the one in June. Also talked to Mike and we might do Mid Summer the 30K We are doing a mudrun but can't
remember when it is but it is in Uxbridge.

Elizabeth: I agree with Vicky take care of that back first:hug:

Vicky: Mike and I are going slow with the PF thing. Mike said his isn't bothering huim but then again he isn't doing any trainning right now. Mine is more my thigh will see the dr soon it isnt going away on its own. We want to do intervals also would love to be able to run with the gang in january. I am so jealous of the dragonboat thing would love to do that.

AFM: Food has been on track and doing good, just doing minor treadmill walks right now while dealing with PF but if I am doing Goodlife trainning starts monday so going to amp that up.

Have a awesome evening all

Hey team. Just got back from zumba and am totally pumped! Thought I'd write before crashiing tonight.

Kim: I hope your thigh starts feeling better.:wizard: Glad you're going to the doc. It's not good to let things go too long (believe me, I speak from experience). Hope Mike is feeling better too.

Kimberly: Sounds like you're going to have a VERY busy year. I think I read your race report on another thread about your husband. It stinks, but I'm glad he bowed out. Is he healing okay now?

Saylan: The Tough Mudder sounds brutual! Wow! No thanks. I can barely handle "just" running. Looking at your race schedule, I'd probably pick one or the other of those halfs. But, I think if your training is up there, and you race one and use one as a training run, you could certainly do it. Why not, right?

Elizabeth: As a fellow injury victim, I must agree with everyone. Get better, then worry about it. You can always walk the whole thing if you have to. I know you don't want to, but you could. Your training will still be there. I didn't run hardly at all for an entire month before Goofy2011 due to an ankle injury, and I did great.

Vicky: Yes, Harrison is excited. Right now, he's more excited about baseball and skating, but he loves hanging out with my mom, so he's going to have a great time. Your trainer sounds like a sadist!:lmao: But, that's what you pay him for, right? I'm so excited to hear about dragon boat practice. We will all need a full update.

AFM: I had a great zumba today. I had a couple of new people come up afterwards and ask what I do for my arms. They were impressed. Made me feel pretty good. I was actually thinking I need to scale back because I'm looking a little manly. :confused3

There is an event this Friday night that I'm going to. It's a 2 hour zumbathon and is supposed to burn about 1000-1200 calories. Exactly what I need right now! I can't wait. My instructor is leading 2 routines, so we're all going to support her.

I've decided to go for the honors program. I'm going after classes tomorrow to apply. I am mostly doing it for the merit scholarships and because it'll look great on my nursing program application. It's going to be really tough, but should help a lot. I don't qualify for any other scholarships due to finances, but could certainly use the help. So, we'll see. But, I'm excited. Frank helped me make the decision. He's willing to help out more so I can work harder.

Hope everyone has a great night.

Tandy: Don't keep us in suspense what do you do for your arms:flower3:

Tried a Bob harper exercise video this morning, it is a total body sculp but focuses on core which is great but alot is done on one foot at a time....well not good for someone with PF and a tight hip.... hope I didn't do any more damage. I think I will cross that one off the list:headache:

Today is a rest day for me. Monday I had a hard track workout that left me wanting more. Tuesday I did a hard 4 miler at just 3 sec slower than my best time ever, even with wearing my heavy cushion shoes. Yesterday I did a hard 10 miler with sprint pick ups the last 3 miles of it. So rest is in order for today.

Since Disney I have lost 2.5 pounds. I've revamped my eating and I'm getting more sleep. Of course y'all knew I was upping the intensity of my workouts. My achillies is still an issue but if I warm up good before training and ice a couple of times a day it's tolerable.

Good to see some new team mates and some members back that we haven't seen for a while.

I have been having a hard time getting WISH to come up, not sure if it's the Yahoo or what. I wasn't able to get on this week at all till today.

Have an awesome day guys.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Dave, I think the boards have been running slow over the past few days.
Are you not doing your pool workouts anymore?

Saylan, If you do the zoo run leave plenty of time prerace. I don't think the zoo can handle the incoming cars/traffic before the race.

Vicky, How was the Dragonboat practice? Yes, I have a fluid trainer for my bike and a set of dvd workouts. I've started using the HR monitor and can really see how the different workouts change results.

Kim, Glad to hear your eating is going well.

Tandy, If you go for your Master's when do you finish school?

Elizabeth, How did today's PT appt go?

Had a great run last night and was a little over dressed.
Should have wore the vest not the jacket. Hard to believe I'm saying I over dressed in January.

Have a great day...........Sue

Good job on your runs guys - sounds like some great workouts.

Thanks for asking about dh - he is healing better and the doctor said he really isn't built for running; so he's looking into another exercise related hobby.

I'm doing my running 6.2 miles tuesday and 3.1 miles tues and today - all on treadmill. not my fave, but it will do.

I'm having a problem with being tired all the time. I have to get up really early to do this exercise and I do have an almost 4 year old to keep up with, but am tired of being tired! any suggestions would be much appreciated.
