Hakuna Matada - Getting fit and fabulous for August

Saylan - I picked mine up at the Running Room. They were $129.99 less 15% (I had a coupon from their 20 Minute Challenge day). The same pair are $85 on RunningWarehouse.com :sad2: Check and see whether your DL hotel allows you to ship packages to them for free. I think RW charges $140 for Kayanos (less the WISH discount code). I'll see if I can find the code, it was changed recently. They ship to Canada but they charge $30 or something like that. If you can get them sent to the US, it's free.

But Kayanos are expensive! They're the shoe that I first used when I started running in. Occasionally, SportChek would have a 25% off everything sale and I'd get a pair there. The Running Room has a "warehouse" on the Queensway in Toronto - you might be able to find something there. They also start discounting shoes closer to Christmas/Boxing Day to make room for the next year's models.

If you're able to ship to the US, Joe's New Balance is a good site that has discounted NB models.

Running warehouse (before WiSH discount) has the 17s at 115$ US which is MUCH cheaper evenif I opt to have them shipped here. I'm debating on two different ideas. Having it shipped to a friend in the states who can ship it on to me or trying this 'ship to the border' program that holds packages for Canadians up to 30 days and I'd just have to drive down there to pick it up...

[edit]: They say they will ship to Canada but when you go to process it says the manufacturor doesn't allow the shoes to be shipped so it doesn't work to simply pay the 30$ price, sadly.

The WISH code is: WISHRACED and it brings the shoes down to 98$ US so I'm seriosuly considering this shiptotheborder company.

Good morning everyone! Just thought I'd give us a bump back up to the top. The dates for free dining were announced this morning but for January it seems the first date is 1/8. Boo! Nothing like a bunch of runners and walkers to eat Disney out of house and home  Oh well. I guess I'll wait and see if there's a general room only discount code or some other PIN that gets sent my way.

I went for a walk last night and I have to tip my hat to all the walkers in the group. It was HARD to walk fast. I walked my 3 mile route and it took me about 50 minutes. The first mile had a bit of a hill but it took me just over 18 minutes to get there. You guys are a tough group :)

I'm going to see tonight if I can go out running with the running group in my area. I'm hoping to be able to shadow some of the faster runners and get some speedwork in.

Saylan - I've read on other forums that people have had good experiences with those companies. I haven't tried them myself but let me know if you do end up using them and what you think of it.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky: If I go that route, I will for sure let you know how it goes. I think my old boss used to use them. It's just so weird that it could get to Michigan by Friday and yet it can't be shipped two more hours away... :confused3

I also have a friend who works for FedEx who may be able to get me a deal if I have them shipped to him.

AFM: I did a 3 miler maintenance run yesterday in my Kayanos from the Princess. I was told on the weekend that I'm in the wrong size shoes. I had switched back to my Kayanos from my Kinseis when I was having so many knee issues. My knee is still tender but it's not getting worse so I think it was a shoe issue.

Now to find out I ran that half marathon in the wrong size... :sad2: I'm measuring a little over 7 in normal shoes and the shoes I'm in for running are 8.5s (when I bought them, they tried to put me in a nine). No wonder I'm having issues with my smaller foot (yes, they're two sizes) sliding around.

One shoe store says to go for 7.5s but I'm thinking 8 might be better. They suggested I get superfeet insoles (the green ones) so I did and tried them in my 8.5 Kayanos yesterday. Holy smokes did that feel weird! My legs felt like they were working double time. I'm not sure yet how I feel about them but I have 59 days from the purchase to return them so I'm going to definitely try them out.

When I pulled out my Kayano insoles for the superfeet ones, I compared my foot size to the Kayano insoles. There's about 1.5-2 inches worth of space. It's insane! There's also space on the side a bit too. I definitely need to get into a new pair of shoes.

Oh, and I might have figured out a costume for DL, so I'm super excited to see if I can pull it off. I'll have to sew it myself but I found an awesome sale on fabric at fabricland so here's hoping I can do it.

Saylan: I can't imagine why they would tell you to go up 2 complete sizes. That's crazy! No wonder you've been having so many problems. I was told to go up 1 complete size, but ended up going up a half size and am very happy with my shoes. I would offer to let you ship to me and I'll ship to you, but Michigan is closer to you than Kansas. Are you willing to share what your costume will be??

Vicky: What type of speed are you hoping to reach in your speedwork tonight? In fact, what are your goals for your races? I am assuming with Goofy you're probably just wanting to finish, but what about the 30k?
I agree that walkers are impressive. I run because it's faster and easier to me. Every time I take a 'day off' and walk, I'm more tired and it takes a lot more time, which means more endurance. Go figure.
I have read that the LR is the most important part of training. I think if you have to give something up, the midweek shorter runs are best. Of course, in a perfect training world, we'd get all our runs in and always be injury free.

Dave: Any luck yet with a race partner?

Sue: Hopefully, things are slowing down for you a little. :)

AFM: I took a running day off and did 3 miles of full incline on the treadmill (woke up too late to go outside). I've been cleaning my neglected house today. It's so strange to have an empty house. Frank went to work and Harrison, my son, is on a camping trip. It's soooo quiet!
We're going dancing tonight! I can't wait. Should burn lots of calories. Now, I'll just have to watch the Sam Adams. ;)

Hey team. Wow I am so far behind.!!!!!!

Will have to catch up later.

Hope you are all having a aweseome day!!!!

This will be a rest day, three hard workouts in a row now a complete rest for the old feet and ankles. I'm training well and starting to race well again, now is the time I have to respect the rest days. You usually get injured when you are feeling so fine that you go over the edge.

Kimmer how's the training going? You gonna do that half under 3 hours?

Have a good cool day y'all.

Hi everyone! Did a quick 2 miler last night - it was raining so I didn't feel like driving to the running club. Funny thing was, I did end up seeing them on my run so I did end up doing a quick paced mile with them!

So my new food for the week is a smoothie I made myself. It's not low cal but it does have a lot of protein in it. And I've found that it keeps me from snacking lots during the day. It's similar to a smoothie that I would buy from the juice bar downstairs at work. It has frozen banana, cocoa powder, frozen yogurt, almond milk, protein powder, almond butter and chia seed. I also bought some smoked paprika to use on meats that I'm grilling. What new foods have you guys tried this week?

Don't forget to weigh in tomorrow ;)

Dave - WTG with the workouts!

Kim - :wave2: Forgot to ask if you ended up buying a grass skirt for the Island Girl?

Tandy - How was the night of dancing. I think I'd need a few drinks if I were going to dance. I have two left feet! WTG on the TM run! I don't think I've ever turned the incline all the way up! I'd like to finish the 30K in under 3:05 and the full in October in under 4:45 (just to beat the January time). Hopefully there will be a 3:00 pace person at the 30K.

Saylan - I know what you mean about the cross border shipping. I don't get it either sometimes. I wonder why they put you in such big shoes! I'm a 7.5 normally and usually wear an 8. I've tried 8.5 before and I get a clown feet feeling when I go that big. I know you need the extra space because your feet will expand but 2 sizes is kind of crazy!

Have a great day everyone!

Hi Team!

Saylan- That’s great you got the bib numbers. Your feet are two different sizes? I’m sorry you’re having shoe issues. You’ll have to post some pics of your costume when you get it made!

Tandy- So you are in for some long days! I was rear ended in June by a guy without insurance who wasn’t paying attention to his driving or those around him. How was dancing? I think if I tried to run 3 miles on TM on full incline I might pass out!

Tandy/Vicky- Yes you’re both right. I know lots of people can’t/don’t run 3 miles or 3 min. When I speak though, I’m referring more to what I personally know my fitness level can be and not comparing it to anyone else’s.

Vicky- It’s probably true parts of it are dangerous. I would hope Disney wouldn’t take people to areas that are known to be dangerous though. Do you still like the trainer? I’ve never run in Asics. LOL 78.12 miles in a week is still good! I’m glad you enjoyed your walk even if it took awhile.

Dave- I hope you enjoyed your rest day!

AFM, yesterday was a terrible healthy day! I worked almost 13 hours and ended up eating fast food, missing my water for the day, and missed my run since I didn’t get home until after 8:30pm. Today was a much better day. I made it out for a run with a coworker. Her GPS watch wasn’t working at first, but I know we hit at least 3 miles so I was happy with that. It was also nice to chat with her for a bit too.

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Good luck Liz!!

August
7 - Bangs Lake Triathlon Waukegan, IL - Liz

I only lost 0.5 lbs this week  It wasn't what I was hoping for since I got in a 15 miler on Saturday but it's a loss so I'll take it. My temptation is week was getting 7-7.5 hours of sleep a night which I did. I can't say I liked the planks all that much but I got 'em done.

My points are:

30 minutes of exercise - 1 point
Drinking water - 1 point
Fruits and veggies - 1 point
Trying a few food/recipe - 1 point (cocoa banana smoothie)
Weight lost - 0.5 points
Avoiding my temptation - 1 point
Exercise of the week - 1 point

Total 6.5 points/-0.5 lbs

So I know most of you must have beat me :) Let's see those numbers!!

Exercise of the week - Squat, curl, press

Hopefully everyone has weights :) Try to use a minimum of 5lbs (but feel free to go as heavy as you want - I usually use weights in between 12-17lbs) and do 3 sets of 10-12 reps. Rest in between each by doing a 30 second plank. No I'm just kidding! But you can if you want ;) Rest 2-3 minutes in between sets.

The points structure will stay the same - http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=42065985&postcount=5

My temptation for this week will be to stop all eating by 8PM.

Good luck everyone

Good Morning Team! Sorry I have been missing for a few days, we went camping.

Vicky - Yes, the dogs went with us camping, they love camping (as it is all about them)! That is a lot of miles for a week! Forgot to weight myself this morning, will have to check in with weight tomorrow.

Kim - Sounds like you are busy, hope the weekend is calmer for you!

Dave - Good luck finding a walking buddy for the Goofy! I always basically walked alone, but found folks to chat with along the way.

Regina - Camping was fun, we just went out for 1 night to shake down the camper, and all went well. Dogs loved it!

Tandy - We do enjoy traveling in the camper, although we have not done it much lately. My dogs get their walk first thing in the morning, before breakfast, in this heat, of course, here it is cooler in the early morning.

Sue - Welcome back!

Saylan - Sounds like you may be in good start corrals for the race! Kayanos are still my shoe of choice, I get mine from SierraTradingPost.com (don’t know what they charge to ship to Canada - but their main store is in Cheyenne, so I no longer need to get things shipped to me) - it will be older models, they buy out seconds and out of date merchandise and sell it cheaply. My regular shoe size is 8.5 and my Kayano’s are 9.5, I sometimes get a 9 if they are not for races (as none are now as I cannot walk those distances anymore with bad knees). Part of it is that I need a wide toe box or my neuromas will kick up, and part for foot swelling during races. I also wear orthodic insoles in my shoes.

AFM - I can’t believe it was Monday when I last posted! On Tues we took the bikes down to the shop in Colorado where we bought them for tune-ups, and I walked out with a new bike! The rode bike I have been riding on was bought used and never really fit to me, Scott has wanted to get me on a Trek for a while. I tried out the Trek Madone, which I thought rode much better than the Specialized Roubaix I have been using, so he bought it for me!!!!! It is white and charcoal with black and pink accents - very pretty. On Wednesday, we got out for a 26 mile ride before heading out camping. Yesterday we ended up not doing any exercise after getting home from camping, and today roads are still wet, so we do not want to take the good bikes out on them, will see if they dry out before it gets too hot to ride. Alternate option - kayak then get in the basement on the spin bike, or a Pilates tape.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Another PR today for the 4 mile hill route in the park. On the 29th of July I had a PR of 47:22, today was 46:46. I'm excited about the progress and getting more and more confident that my new "Smarter" training is working. Better nutrition, hard workouts and enough rest. My pesky achillies gets ice after working out and then again before bed.

Vicky, I get the point for exercise. My weight is 183 this morning and I did get pretty good nutrition this last week. I didn't stretch as much as I should though.

Lynn glad to hear you are doing good, how is that pesky knee?

Sally and I are going to sneak away to Gatlinburgh for our anniversery in Nov, doesn't seem possible we will be married a year in just a few months.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: Congratulations to you and Sally! Happy Anniversary.

Lynn: You must live in the southern part of Wyoming if you can just hop over to Colorado. ;) My brother lives in Greeley, Co. The last time I went to visit him, I drove up to Wyoming just to be able to say that I've been in the state. We have plans to someday really get up there, but so far, we keep going to Florida.
You seem to have so much energy. It's great that you get some kind of physical exercise every day, and you have such a wide range of stuff to choose from. :thumbsup2

Vicky: A loss is a loss, don't forget! You did great this week! :thumbsup2

Regina: I'm so sorry for your accident. I am amazed at how many people think driving is less important than web surfing/texting/chatting, etc.... Grrrr
I know how you feel about being out of shape for you. My version is definitely different than most people's. I can only judge my fitness based on me.

Kim: Goodness girl, is your life ever going to slow down? ;) You just seem to be going, going, going all the time!

AFM: I weighed in this morning at 132.4, which is a loss of 1.4! I'll take it. After all, I went to my grandmothers house last weekend, and we all know how grandmothers cook!

So, my points are:
1 point for 1 lb of weight loss
1 point for exercise (thank goodness we can bank minutes)
1 point for water
1 point for fruits/veggies (easy since I'm a vegetarian)
1 point for vitamin
1 point for new food (potato salad, believe it or not)
1 point for the dreaded planks (did them everyday)
0 points for temptation (I didn't give up anything this week)

Am I forgetting anything?

Hi Team!

Vicky- I agree- a loss is still a loss! Great job on getting 6.5 points!!

Lynn- I’m glad you guys had fun camping and the camper is ready to go for the next trip! It’s great the pups get to go with you! Your new bike sounds very nice and pretty. I hope you were able to make it out for a bike ride today (if the roads did dry out).

Dave- Glad to hear you had a great training walk today!! Way to go on the PR! I think planning an anniversary trip is a great idea.

Tandy- Thank you. It was very upsetting for me as it was my first accident where I was hit hard and injured from it. My work requires me to drive around a lot and some of my coworkers (and my husband of course) have already seen I’m still a little traumatized from it because I am very quick to respond when I see people not paying attention and driving in ways that are likely to cause accidents. I also still look in my rearview mirror and cringe when I see someone flying up behind me that looks like they may not stop when I am stopped. No, I don't think you forgot any points. Way to go on getting almost everything this week!!!

Well, my points this week are not good! But my goal is to improve them this next week! I weighed in this morning at 136.6, which is a loss of 2.4. My temptation to avoid this week will be not to drink any soda.

Trying a new food- 1 point (turkey, cranberry, cream cheese sandwich- it was sooo good and I never would have thought of it on my own)
Weight lost- 2.4 points

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend so far!

Hi Everyone,

Checking in after my long abscence. Things have been crazy here. A few weeks ago, as I posted, Liz's Uncle passed away. Now my cousin has found out that he probably has cancer in at least three different spots. And Liz's bible study leader has attempted suicide. (I'm really not making this stuff up)
Along with a series of storms coming through that have brought down several large tree limbs that I needed to cut up, it's been really hot and humid here. Also, we've been getting Robert ready for school, which starts in ten days. I'll be happy when summer is over and things cool off and slow down.

Training workouts have been few and far between. I've gone from setting a goal for my fall marathons to hoping that I'll just be able to finish. On Saturday, I have a 20 mile LSR planned with Liz. I'll have a better handle on how I'm doing after that. I did 10 last weekend in the heat and felt horrible.
We shall see...

Dave~ congratulations on winning your race! Great job!

-Mike :cool2:

Thanks Mike. The next race in a week will be a lot tougher. To start with I'll have to take my place on the front row with 3 state senior champions, a couple of #2s and a guy that just took third in his age group at the national Senior games. Then there will be a few race walkers wander down from Northern Ky and Indiana.

The race is pretty cool though, they send off the runners and then 5 min later the walkers. It's fun to see how many runners we can catch. The first mile is up a pretty decent hill so we usually start catching the runners that started to fast and ran out of gas about the one mile point. I haven't walked this race in a couple of years because of injuries.

Got my best Grrrrrr! on and ready to go racing.

Keep up your training brother it will get you through difficult times.

Dave:hippie:

Hey team, sorry for being MIA,

Will find time to catch up today. Weight inn 197.6 so down 1.2 pds considering the weekend I had I will take it.

Vicky: I hope you didn't try texting me back yesterday, just as we where leaving Taste I dropped my cell phone and the screen cracked so I couldn't find anything on it. Then we headed to BELL to get a new phone and that was a complete nightmare, didn't get home till around 5 and I was exhausted but it will take them till Monday or Tuesday till they can transfer all my numbers over to my new phone so I could text anyone. Hope I didn't ruin your evening.

Off for a run will check in with everyone later

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Thanks for setting up the challenge!

Kim - Sorry about the cell phone, hope you got a good upgrade!

Dave - Knee is still pesky - bike riding does not bother it at all, in fact, if I skip the bike ride the knee hurts more - walking is not that comfortable. We are headed to DL for the half, but we have only signed up to do the 5K - will see how that goes. I walk 1.25 miles each morning with the dogs, but it is not a fast walk.

Mike - Sorry you have had such a bad summer! Pixie Dust for things to improve! You had such a good base of exercise, I bet you will do fine on your fall races!

Regina - WE did get out for a bike ride after the roads dried up!

Tandy - We live in Cheyenne - just over the border from Colorado. We are 45 minutes from Greeley, 2 hours from Denver.

AFM - Weigh in was 138 - so no change there.
30 min exercise - 1 pt
water - 1 pt
fruit & veggies - 1 pt
new food - 1 pt
vitamin - 1 pt
no bonus pts - only did planks 1 day! Did not set up temptation to avoid (guess I missed that part of it.)
Total 5pts

We did get out Friday for a 16 mile bike ride, then yesterday got in 26 miles in the morning, then last night was our “Moonlight Cowboy Ride”, started at 8pm with contest for best decorated bikes, ride started at 10pm, it was not a fast ride, it took us an hour to ride the 9.4 miles, but it was a lot of fun after getting away from the little kids who were blowing the stop signs and red lights and not paying attention to their parents who were yelling at them! Today is a “rest day”, I will try to make myself get to the basement for a Pilates tape or some weights! (Maybe I should make that my temptation - not to avoid weights and Pilates!!!!)

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!
