Hakuna Matada - Getting fit and fabulous for August

You guys are rocking the BL challenge! I need to catch up! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! It's raining here in Toronto - it's pretty heavy and I thought about trying to sneak out in between the light and heavy rain but then the thunder and lightning started and there's no way I'm going to run in that.

Kim - Sorry to hear about your phone :( I think I have one more drop left on mine and then it's probably going to break as well. No worries about last night - I figured you had changed your mind or something had come up! We'll catch them the next time they're in town :)

Lynn - Good job on all the mileage! The Midnight Cowboy Ride sounded like a lot of fun! Did you and Scott end up decorating your bikes too? Very dangerous for the little ones not to be paying attention to the lights and stop signs - drivers aren't always the most attentive. Especially in the city they're always blowing red lights. Some lessons are learned the hard way unfortunately. Will check out Sierra Trading Post after I'm done here. I hadn't heard of them before.

Dave - What's your race next week? Let me know so I can add you to the race calendar. Do you get a lot of surprised looks from the runners when you catch up to them?

Mike - Sorry to hear about all the bad news... I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts. Is Robert looking forward to starting school again? The heat and humidity is definitely making any kind of LR or speedwork difficult. But before you know, the fall and winter will be here again.

Regina - WTG on the loss!! The sandwich combo sounds yummy - I'm putting cream cheese on my shopping list! Good luck with the soda this week! I know that's a tough one!

Tandy - How did you manage to lose weight on a trip :) That's awesome! How did you like potato salad? I was out for lunch the other day with a group of coworkers and some there also said they hadn't tried potato salad before. I want to try making a version that uses a mix of sweet potato and regular potato. Mostly because I always think of sweet potato as fall and winter food.

AFM - Not much of import to report here. I'm just doing a bit of cleaning up while I'm waiting for the rain to stop. Or at least to lighten up a bit. But every time, it looks like it's slowing down, it picks right back up again.

I'll wait until tomorrow to announce the week 1 challenge winners just in case anyone else wants to check in.

Kim...Hope you can get the new phone up and running with all your info soon. I was afraid I was going to have phone issues of my own. I accidentally dropped my iPhone into water on Thurs. I took out the sim card, put it in a bag of rice and left it there until today. I am happy to report that all is well!

Mike...so sorry to hear about all the sadness you have had this summer. Hopefully getting out to DL will cheer you up. I'm looking forward to seeing you again.

Lynn...take care of that knee.

AFM...this has been a very exciting week for me. Spent the first part of the week looking after my granddaughters while my daughter gets ready to go back to teaching after being a SAHM for 4 years. Also, found out that we are going to be grandparents again, not once but twice. The above mentioned daughter is due at the beginning of March and her twin sister is due at the END of March. We are still holding our breath a bit with the second pregnancy. This daughter has miscarried twice, so prayers and PD would be appreciated for her. If she can make to at least 12 weeks, we will all breathe easier.

Yesterday there was rain and lightning when I was ready to go for my LR, so I did it on the indoor track at the gym. 10 miles! All I can say now is, "Let the taper begin!"

Good morning!!!!

Mary: Congrats and PD to your daughters how exciting.

Vicky: Did you ever get out for your run? It cleared up here in the afternoon.

Lynn: I read on Scott's FB that you guys will be in disney when we are there Oct 23 - 28 before we head out on our cruise. ANy chance of a hook up. We are only in the parks 2 days We are staying at POP we are going to Epcot on Tuesday, and MK Wed. Would love to hook up even if just for a quick drink.

Mike: Hugs to you and Liz, life is sure dealing you a crappy hand of card lately. I hope things turn around for you soon:hug:

Dave: Yup still aiming for a sub 3 1/2 will reevaluate that later in the year to even see if I can go for a 2:45 which I would be over the moon for.

Regina & Tandy: Congrats on the weight loss that is awesome!!!!

AFM: Life is slowing down now, really don't have much more planned before our trip at the end of Oct. Mine and Mike's 24th wedding anniversary is on the 15th of August but not really doing anything special as we have a trip in Oct. Time to really concentrate on weight loss and trainning no more excuses about this party or that festival, clean eatting and consistant exercise will make Kim a lean mean fighting machine;)

Have a great Monday friends!!!!

Good luck with your training Kimmer, I have no doubt that there will be a leaner meaner Canadian Princess in January.

I'm off for my speed workout.

Dave:hippie:

Happy Monday team!

Kim - I did get out for a run around 12PM. I normally wouldn't have gone but it was overcast so I figured I was ok. I got halfway through (4 miles) and the sun came out. It was strong and made the humidity even worse. I dumped half a bottle of water on my head which felt nice for about 30 seconds and ended up walking most of the way back home. I am hoping that next Sunday the temperatures are much better. There's no shade on that course and last year I remember there were a few people who were collapsed on the side of the road. Any luck with your phone?

Dave - Good luck with you speedwork today! Give 'em your best GRRRR!!

Mary - WTG on the 10 miler!! Congrats on the news of your grand babies :) Sending your DD lots of good thoughts and pixiedust: Is DD looking forward to going back to work?

AFM - I did a 5 miler and an 8 miler on the weekend. Both days were hot and humid! Phew! We had rain but it didn't seem to do much to cool things down - it just seemed to add to the humidity. I've got a gym workout tonight and then a few errands to run after that.

Hope everyone's doing well :wave2:

Happy Monday everyone. This is the last week of summer for my son, so it's a little bit sad, but we have lots of stuff planned, so we're going to make the most of it! :)

Vicky: We finally got a break from the heat today, so hopefully, you will soon. I just don't know how you can even start running in that stuff. I had to give up and get the TM going again.
I think sweet potato salad would be good. I loved the potato salad, but would hate regular. I don't eat mayonnaise or mustard, at all, ever. So, that's why I hadn't tried it yet. My grandma made it with plain greek yogurt, and it was good. :thumbsup2

Kim: Happy Anniversary!!!! That's a long time girl! I've been married almost 18 and it feels like forever. Which cruise are you going on in October? I think that's the perfect time of year to go to Disney. Glad to hear you got a new phone. I did the same thing to mine and lost all my pictures. I didn't realize the girl hadn't imported them until about 3 days later, so it was too late.

Mary: Congratulations on the upcoming grandbabies. Your daughter will be in my prayers.

Lynn: That bike ride sounds fun. I would want to get far away from dangerous little ones with yelling parents too! I think you've earned an entire day off, but what do I know?

Dave: Good luck on your next race. It must give you lots of satisfaction to pass those runners! ;)

Mike: I'm so sorry for everything you are dealing with. When it rains, it pours. I'm sure that you'll be able to finish your race, just maybe not as quickly as you had hoped.

Regina: Congrats on the weight loss! That's a good amount of loss. I was very slightly rear ended at a stop light once, and I mean very slightly, but it still affected me enough that I have to have an out. So, whenever I pull up behind someone at a light, I leave enough room and have an escape plan, like turning into the ditch or whatever. It gives me peace of mind to know that no one will do it to me again.

AFM: I finally got in a 10 mile run today. It's been sooooo long since I've done any real distance. I'm going to run at least 5 or 6 days this week with another 10 miler on Saturday, but it'll be slower. Then, next week, I want to get in a 12 or 14 miler before I have to quit running. It's kind of funny that I'm ramping up the miles to stop running. :confused3

We got out for a little bike ride yesterday, which was so nice. There's a beautiful, wooded 4 mile trail around a lake about an hour from here that we love. So, we went around twice, and sat down to a picnic lunch that Frank (hubby) packed. He did great. It even included wine!:thumbsup2 Then, we were going to go around a couple more times but this weird thunderstorm came in. So, it was only 8 miles for the day. We're hoping to go again next weekend. I would also like to run while the guys bike. It really pushes me to get the speed up there.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Hi Team,

Thanks to EVERYONE for the well wishes. With all thats going on, its nice to know I have friends!

Liz and I dropped Robert off with some friends last Saturday and went for our weekly long run. We set out to do 20 miles which was on Liz's training schedule, but got cooked by the heat and humidity again. We completed 16 with a pace of 1240 per mile, running one mile and walking a minute. At 13 Liz sent me ahead of her, and insisted that I go. (I don't like leaving my wingman). I was able to pound out a ten minute pace for a little while and settled back to around 11. I'm still sore today... I've got the Chicago Rock and Roll half this weekend so I hope I'm up to it! (I have to go all the way into Chicago on Friday, to pick up the race packet)

We are getting really excited about the Disneyland half! I still have to make the dinning reservations. Anyone want to meet for a meal? I know we will be doing Goofy's Kitchen and the Blue Bayou. We in the parks for four days, the beach for at least one, and maybe Universal. We can't make the trip next year, so we want this to be a "California" experience. I can't wait to see all of you!

Robert starts Kindergarten next Monday. I think I'll be balling my eyes out, tough guy that I am. :rolleyes1 We are excited and sad at the same time. With everything going on here, I'm just happy to have a positive milestone happen.

Anyway, it looks like everyone is gearing up for some upcoming fall races! I didn't check in here until after the point challenge started. So maybe I'll do it next month if we continue it. I'll probably have negative points after eating and drinking my way through DL and CA...

Keep up the good work! -Mike :cool2:

Mike, Sally and I would love to meet you guys for dinner, but we are not going to be at the Disneyland half. We will do breakfast with you at the Team meet and then enjoy some park hopping with you.

Still need to do a local race together though. I'm looking at Evansville for some leave on friday evening and staying friday night and racing saturday trips. I need races that have a seperate walk race that draws other race walkers. Most half and full marathons don't so I just do them to compete against the distance and clock. But the walk races are what I need to better my skills in my chosen sport.

Had a great day today, good speed session this morning with a race walker friend, hot and humid but average 200m times was 62 secs. Then mowed and trimmed the yard and now waiting for Sally to get home from work so we can go out for dinner and then the market for fruit.

Dave:hippie:

Good Afternoon Team!

Vicky - Sierra Trading Post has always been one of my favorite stores, however, like all stores that deal in seconds and closeouts, you need to know what you are getting - shoes that you have bought before should be no big deal! There are some really good deals and some not so great deals.

Kim - We would love to hook up, let me send you a PM with our cell phone numbers!

Dave - Good luck finding races to walk!

Mike - Good job on the training runs! We rarely eat out when we go to DL (we will be in a condo - so can eat most meals in) but hopefully we will run into you in the parks. Good luck on the RnR half!

Tandy - Your bike ride sounds fun, good job on the running miles!

Mary - Prayers and PD for your daughters pregnancy!

AFM - We took the bikes out to the other side of town today to again ride the road race route for Scott’s Senior Olympics, then picked up our ride packet for the MS ride next weekend in Sundance, WY (Devil’s Tower - like from “Close Encounters”. Tomorrow we have planned a long ride with a benefit BBQ lunch in the middle. We also go the lawn mowed today.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn, we have a good walking community here, lots of power walkers and some race walkers. At a good race like the one next saturday we could have 10 race walkers and 50 power walkers as well as the normal fitness walkers.

Dave:hippie:

Hello team!

Found the new thread... I was surprised to see a new thread, I forgot what month it was for a second :)

Tandy - WTG on your finals!

Regina - Happy belated birthday! I'm also having a hard time getting in 8 glasses of water a day. An ABD trip sounds like fun. I've thought of doing one but they are expensive so it would be tough to get DH on board. Greece would be really neat, I've always wanted to go there.

Lynn - WTG on your bike rides, that's a lot of miles!

Mary - Congrats and PD for your daughters!

Saylan - What's your costume for the half (if you're willing to share)? I don't think I'm going to do a costume, although I did make myself a running headband from some mickey head ribbon.

AFM - Last week kept me pretty busy. DH and I went to the county fair over the weekend. So, we enjoyed some not-so healthy food. The frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate was great, but the deep fried oreos were not good.

My points for last week:
1 point for 1 lb weight loss
1 point for exercise
1 point for fruits/veggies
1 point for new food (new fruit salad recipe)
0 points for water (i'm having a hard time getting it all in)
0 points for vitamin
0 points for planks (I only did them twice last week)
0 points for temptation (I didn't give anything up)
Total = 4 points

I didn't want to go running tonight, so I used our elliptical for 30 minutes. I'll have to get out for a run tomorrow evening.

I ordered some star wars themed Mickey head iron-on transfers for DH and I to wear for the 5k since it is star tours themed. I'm a big star wars fan. I also started making my own running headbands and I made a mickey head one to wear during the half.

Have a good night!
Emily

So we have our winners for the first week! Regina wins for biggest percentage of weight loss and Tandy wins for most points!! :thumbsup2

ETA: Do you guys want to add a half point if you do at least half? So let's say you take your vitamin every day but forgot to one day, you'd still give yourself a half point.

Mike - Feel free to jump into the challenge at any point! Just do a weigh-in on Friday and start counting the points whenever you want. Don't wait! Start now!

Good Afternoon Team!

Congrats to Tandy and Regina!!!!

Dave - sounds like you have good competition!

Vicky - I was originally thinking the point system was per day - ie: 1 pt per day for water, vitamin, exercise, etc - that of course would make the weight loss a more minor part, unless more weight was given to the weight loss points (like 5 pts per pound), and would make the addition harder - but it is an idea for partial credit during the week.

AFM - Today we did a long bike ride - 50 miles! We left home at 7am, rode to the other side of town (11 miles) to do the Road Race route for Senior Olympics again, then we were really early for our BBQ, so we rode to a bakery for coffee and a breakfast bar that we split - some other folks Scott worked with joined us there - it was a nice break. We were still early for the BBQ, so we did a couple of laps around one of the city parks, then headed out to the BBQ. We were the first ones there, but they were set up and ready to go. We actually were not very hungry, but we each got a pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, chips and a cookie - I put the chips and cookie in the pockets of my bike jersey (nice having back pockets to carry stuff in) and brought them home. At home, we were 2 miles shy of 50, so we did 2 loops around our block to get the 50 miles in.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Good Morning Team!

Cloudy and threatening rain here, so do not know about a bike ride, good day for Pilates tape! Dogs did get their morning walk around the block.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Awesome group training walk this morning. We had a perfect morning, temps in the high 60s and sunny. Our time for the 6.2 miles with serious hills was 1:16:49 was a PR. I'm keeping my streak of PRs on every course every week continues.

Tomorrow will be rest day since I've had three tough workouts in a row. A speed session, a middle distance (4 miler) and a long distance (6.2 miles).

I feel ready for the race this weekend.

Dave:hippie:

Hey team!!!!!

Just popping in to say HI!!!!

Things are going good, exercise is good, food choices are good. Hoping for nice loss on Friday.

WTG Regina and Tandy!!!!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

Dave: WTG on all your workouts you are rocking it my friend

Lynn: 50 mile ride WOW that is awesome. That food sounds awesome and yummy!!!

Mike: Hey how is it going? I hope life is slowing down for you a bit.

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!!!!!!!

Hi Team!

Just checking in to say hello! So...Hello!

Dave~ Great job on the training and increasing your pace!

Lynn+Scott~ Also, great job on the 50 mile ride. The most I've ever ridden is about half that.

Tandy+Regina~ Awsome on the weight loss and exercising!

AFM~ We are trying to scrimp ever dollar we have so we can blow them in CA!! Almost time to pull the luggage out of storage!
The weather has been absolutely beautiful here. Lower humidity and around 80 degrees. The mosiquitos on the other hand, are in vicious swarms that attact as soon as you step outside.
Robert is set for Kindergarten, although I sense a little anxiety about riding the bus.
I ran three miles on Tuesday at a pace of 8:44 and plan on getting out again today, and hope to maybe meet up with Rick this week sometime.

Anyway, if anyone wants to meet up at DL during the visit, let me know and I'll PM you my cell number and we can track each other down. We will be arriving on Friday and leaving the next Friday. Running the 5k and the half, and staying at the Disneyland hotel.

Have a great day everyone! Mike

Good morning team!!!!

Mike: Coast to coast is in the plans but I am thinking 2013 which is when I will do the Goofy again and round it out nicely with a coast to coast medal ;)

Well not happy this morning, took a peek at the scale cause I just couldn't help myself and only down .2 pds????:confused3:confused3 how is that possible uugghhhhh I did take my measurements also so I hope to see some difference there.

Have a super day all.

Hang in there Kimmer, they ain't seen the best of you yet.

Rest day for smarter pandas today. My destiny is not going to be nursing a hurt foot this year, it's going to be recovery and competition.

Dave:hippie:

Kim: You are doing everything right, so don't worry about what the scale says. I had a bad night last night and was so tempted to step on there today, but I'm not gonna do it. I am hoping to do Goofy in 2013 also. I have over a year to talk Frank into it, so who knows.

Mike: Kindergarten is such an exciting time that I'm sure he'll get over his jitters quickly.
I hope you guys have a great time on your trip. You certainly need it!

Lynn: Great job on the bike riding day. Just awesome. 50 miles used to be my long ride that I would do every other week. Always made me feel like I had accomplished so much. I'd be lucky to get 20 in now, but I'm thinking that while I can't run for these 5 weeks, I'm going to get back in to riding. :thumbsup2

Vicky: I definitely vote for half points. I'm not doing as good this week as I did last week, so I need them. ;)

Emily: I haven't been to a county fair in years, but I remember only 2 things. Eating tons of fried foods, and then, getting sick because those fried foods don't sit well with all those spinning rides. I keep seeing those deep fried oreos and twinkies, but haven't gotten brave yet.

AFM: I've managed to keep up the exercise this week. Ran the 10 Monday, ran 4 Tuesday, went to zumba class on Wednesday because I hurt my knee running and needed a day off. Today, I'm planning another 4 or 5, and am probably going to do a hill route. I love and hate hills. I'm meeting some other WISHers for the first time this Saturday. There are 4 of us in the KC area, and we're going to meet at one of the trails. I'm excited.

We went to the KC zoo on Tuesday, and had an amazing day. It's a good 6 mile walk if you do the whole thing. It was just my son and I, so we walked it all. If we bring any of his friends, they always whine about how tired they are. He does too, but I can ignore him. :laughing:Then, we went and saw Cowboys and Aliens (or whatever the title is). It was predictable, of course. But, at least it had Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in it. :lovestruc

I hope everyone has a fabulous day.
