Hakuna Matada - Getting fit and fabulous for August

Good luck Rick. I'm looking at the same goal for a 10K I have in Oct. It's a super race with drawings for $10,000 in prize money.

Hi team!

Rick - That's a huge milestone! Congrats! Does WW still go by points? I went to meetings about 9 years ago and thought it was such a neat way to keep track of the food I was eating! Good luck on your 10K this weekend! Don't be a stranger, come back and give us a RR :)

Dave - Fantastic pace! I don't even run that fast most of the time! WTG! That October race sounds competitive! I will be rooting for you Dave!

AFM - I had a killer workout at the gym last night. I asked my trainer if we could go easier on the weights and legs because of the 30K on Saturday. I guess in my mind I was thinking of an easy workout but he had me do a lot of metabolic exercises - jump squats, TRX rows, pushing the sand bag, seated rows ... and some exercise I think he made up. You do a pushup, then you do a "jump" so that your feet are by your left elbow, then you "jump" and return your feet to pushup/plank position, "jump" and bring your knees to your right elbow, "jump" and bring your feet back to the pushup/plank position, do another pushup and repeat 10x. I was dying at the end!!

Not sure how much running I'm going to get done this week - I'm trying to recover from Sunday while trying to taper for Saturday  I may switch to walking instead.

Have a great day everyone :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We have been talking about meeting at DL, but have not set a time or place. We may just go with cell phones and try to meet up someplace. Yes, all that food was supplied by the race - the dinner, the breakfast and the lunch! I did not feel great after this 50 miles- did not stop to eat - really need to force myself to do that. I am planning to stop at EVERY rest stop (every 10 miles or so) on the MS ride this weekend!! OK, what is your alternative to jumping jacks (cannot jump easily either). Maybe have 2 exercises - one for normal folks, and one non-impact for us older and knee damaged folks. I am always open to new exercises. Good job on the race!

Rick - Good job on the weight loss!

Kim - Hi! Good luck with your new work out plan!

Dave - Great job on the training!

Mike - I hardly ever post on FB, Scott does post quite a bit though (although I do not think he posts as much as he did when he was working). Good job on the PR! Good job to Liz also! Good luck to Robert going to school! Great Race Report!

Regina - No, we did not decorate our bikes, most who did just used the light sticks. Good luck job hunting (at least it sounded like you would be looking for another job). Good job avoiding soda!

AFM - Yesterday we did 26 miles on the bike - did not get out this morning, it is really windy - had quite a wind storm during the night - gusts to 50mph - kept both of us awake from about midnight until 2am. Wind is still blowing at 15-25mph - too fast to comfortable ride bikes outside (the gusts tend to push bike in a direction you might not want to go in - like into a ditch or into a car!) Scott is headed out of town today on teaching assignment, I may get out later if the wind dies down, if not, I will head down to basement for Pilates tape.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Vicky: Thanks! Yeah, WW is still doing points but the recently revised the program and are calling it PointsPLUS. Biggest thing is that most fruits are now zero points, and now the point calculation include carbs, fat, protein, and fibre which brings it closer to the way dieticians look at nutritional needs. I like the new program. I will try to do a good RR following Mike's example. :)

Dave: Wow! You walk faster than I can run! I would love to be able to sustain a 9:00 mm pace! Right now, my fastest pace has been 10:30 for a 5K. I will just have to keep training... :worship:

Mike: Great Race Report! You and Liz are going to have a good race this weekend! Bring home the Bling! :yay:

ASM: Been working the Foam Roller this week, trying to work out a twinge in my left hammy so it will be strong for the 10K. I walked 5K this morning and it felt okay. Wednesday I am walking 5K in the morning and running 5K that evening. Then I will walk another 5K on Friday morning to close out the week and do nothing more until Race Day on Sunday. Hopefully, this will lead to a positive race experience.

Hello team!

Lynn - Thanks for the clarification, I couldn't remember exactly how the tents are set up. Congrats to Scott on his races!

Regina - Sorry to hear your job isn't working out. I haven't made the shirts yet, but I will post pictures when I do.

Mike - WTG on your PR! Got your PM and have replied with my number.

Vicky - WTG on your race!

Rick - Congrats, that is an awesome accomplishment! Good luck on your race.

AFM - We went for a run tonight, it went pretty well. The weather was pretty nice today, but it's supposed to be much hotter later in the week.

Have a good night!
Emily

Good morning team!!!

Mike: WTG on your PR:cheer2::cheer2: and also congrats on your 10th 1/2 wow!!!!!

Vicky: WTG on your race as well. I read that Acura wasn't really walker friendly and since I wasn't anywhere near where I wanted to be pace wise I bailed. Will not be quick this Saturday but am just going to go out and walk mostly but will throw in some intervals to see how they actually feel out on the road instead of just the TM

Rick: WOW that is some awesome weightloss congrats to you!!!!

Lynn: You guys are doing some serious biking, that is sooo awesome

Whine Alert::headache: I am getting frustrated with this weight loss thing. I can't seem to get that scale to move. I have done measurements so I really hope I am losing inches but only going to measure once a month. Not sure what I am doing wrong in the food dept. I use to eat fast food and drink lots of pop every day, well I don't eat fast food anymore and have all but cut out the pop, only 1 every once in a while and no pepsi at all (that was my addiction) and the scale isn't moving. I can't even say that by eatting better I am feeling better cause I feel exactly the same ....grrrrrrr:mad: OK whining is over.

Have a super day everyone!!!!

Good Morning Team!

Kim - do your clothes feel any looser? That is another way you can tell fat is coming off and muscle is building up even if the scale is not moving.

Emily - we are not doing the half, but if they have the tents set up for the 5K, we will be around for that, and will look for you. I will have my WISH shirt on, do not know which shirt Scott will wear.

Rick - Have fun on your 5K walk and 5K run!

AFM - never did get out on the bike yesterday, other than to ride to the mailbox to pick up the mail. I did spend the day weeding - got it about half done. Thunder storm chased me into the house just before dinner time. Today I have an oil change appt for the car this morning, but weather looks good so hope to get out on bike this afternoon, and maybe some more weeding!

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi everyone. I can't believe how far behind on posts I am.

Lynn: Congrats to Scott on his placement in both races. Awesome! Yes, wind stinks when riding. I struggle enough as it is, I don't need a headwind!

Kim: I know this sounds silly, but don't focus on the scale. Try to remember that the changes you've made are ultimately going to make you a healthier person. I get so focused on the scale sometimes, that I will do unhealthy things to lose weight faster. All that does is mess me up later.

Emily: I'd like to see pics also. :)

Rick: Great job on your weight loss! :cheer2: I did weight watchers back in the day when I gained 30 pounds quitting smoking. I loved the program. It's truly the only one out there that teaches you how to eat healthy. That's an amazing amount of weight to lose. You must feel so much better. Good luck on your 10k.

Vicky: Nope, that's a real exercise. Killer, isn't it? I know you are going to kill it this Saturday! What was your time last year and how much do you think you'll improve this year? Great job on this last race. I love the sprint to the finish! I did that at the half this January, and it was fun to try to beat the young woman I chose as my pacer.

Mike: Fantastic race report! Great job on your PR!!!!:cheer2: I love the sign message.

Regina: The running is because I'm taking 19 credit hours at school this fall, and I've had 2 nagging injuries. I'm going to put the 2 together and take a break from my running. I finish one of my classes at 5 weeks, and then, I'll only be going to school 2 days a week for 8 hours each day, which will give me back my running time, even with homework and studying.
The run with the Wishers was fun. I run a much faster pace, so it was nice to just relax and take it easy.
I'm sorry to hear you won't be taking your ABD trip next year. I've always wanted to do one, but just never seem to find the time/money.

AFM: I'm taking a much needed day off from running today. I did 4 on Monday at a pace of 7:05/mile and yesterday I managed 9 at a pace of 8:25/mile. I'm feeling good, but man, it hurts to run. I am running 3 more days, and then, taking my break, so I can handle anything for 3 days. :thumbsup2
I'm having a Willow House party on Friday, so I'm trying to get my house in tip top shape. Plus, going back to school Monday, it's nice to have the house really clean.
Eating hasn't been going good. We've had events every night and I have actually gained this week. Do we deduct points if we gain weight?

Hi everyone!

Kim - Try journalling your food intake. A site I really like is Lose It!. Not saying that you do but when I started using it, I was surprised by how much snacking I did. A slice of cheese here and there, a handful of nuts etc. By the end of the day it really added up. I also try to stop eating a few hours before bed - so I try not to have anything to eat after 8PM. Someone once told me that the weight gain didn't happen overnight, so the weight loss won't happen overnight either. Don't worry - it's a slow process some weeks but you'll get there for sure

Rick - Free fruit is good! I'd much rather eat fruits than my veggies LOL Oh and feel free to join our weight loss challenge anytime you want! pixiedust: for your hamstrings and I hope you're feeling better in time for your race!

Lynn - How about just doing jacks? So they're like jumping jacks without the jumping. The arm movements are the same but you're putting your foot out in front and alternating legs with each arm movement. WTG on the 26 miles! Have you logged how many miles you and Scott have logged since his retirement?

Emily - Good job on your run! How do you feel about the DL 1/2?

AFM - I had coffee with my chiropractor last night. She's going on vacation for a few weeks so I thought it would be fun to catch up with her before she left for Peru. She gave me some nifty breakfast ideas - oatmeal with natural PB and bananas, Greek yogurt with natural PB and chocolate protein (or cocoa). She was also telling me about a product called PB2 which is like natural PB but has fewer calories.

I'm going to try and see Harry Potter tonight. I think I must be one of the only people who hasn't seen it yet!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

The week #3 winner for the BL Challenge is Tandy for points and weight!!! Woo-hoo!! Congrats :cool1::cool1:

Oops I think we were posting at the same time!

Tandy - WTG on those miles Speedy! I think I might have once done a 7 m/m sprinting to the finish but doubt very much I could keep it up for a mile!

My 30K times last year were 3:36 (March) and 3:05 (August). Ideally, I'd like to run 3:00 but because of the heat this summer, I haven't had a chance to do much speedwork. All the running I was doing was just to get in mileage. There will be a pacer there for 3:00 I think. I will probably start behind him and make sure he doesn't leave my sight. Last year, I was about 5 minutes behind him but was never able to catch up. At one point during the race, he was running by himself even though he had started with a big group -so I don't know what happened.

How are your knees and hamstrings/glutes doing?

Ten miler for me today. I walked it with a brother so it was just over 2 hours of good conversation and great company. If only they could all be that way.

Now I have a 10 hour work day to look forward to. Going to be hard to stay awake if the store isn't busy today.

Happy Wednesday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Dave~ Great workout!

Rick~ Again, great job on the weightloss and getting better everyday!

Mary, Lynn, Emily~ Got your PMs and listed your cell's into my phone, see you in CA!

Vicky~ I haven't see Harry Potter either, you are not alone!

AFM~ I booked the flight for Goofy!:banana::banana: Robert is doing great in full day Kindergarten so far. It was weird sending him to a school I attended such a long time ago. Not much else going on here. I have to get busy with all this free time I now have with him being gone all day!

-Mike :cool2:

Happy Wednesday, everyone,

My ortho isn't allowing me to run for a while so I've taken up swimming to keep me in shape and prevent additional stress on the knee. He is talking more about surgery so I need to not overdo anything. I really don't want surgery and I still hope to run in a race that I've registered for in late October.

Vicky, how do I join this awesome weight loss challenge?

Happy training!

Hi everyone! Looks like the weekend is almost here! Just thought I'd give us a bump up!

Elizabeth - With the weight loss challenge, jump in whenever you want! The more the merrier! Give me your starting weight and we'll go from there. We weigh in every Friday and use the number to determine your percentage of weight loss. We also keep track of points for exercises, diet etc. Every week we have a winner for biggest percentage of weight loss and most points earned.

Sorry to hear about your knee! pixiedust: I'm hoping all you'll need is some R&R for it to get better. I wouldn't want the surgery either (although everyone I've talked to has really felt better afterward).

Mike - That's cute that Robert is going to the same school you did :) Have you started packing for DL yet?

Dave - Great job on the 10 miler! Especially on a work day before work! Wow! You are awesome!

AFM - So I did end up going to see Harry Potter last night. I haven't read the book in a while but I think there were a few things that they changed in the movie. I won't say anything because I know Mike hasn't seen it yet.

Going to start carb loading for Saturday tonight. I think I'm starting a bit late but I feel like it's hard balancing between weight loss and fueling for long distance races.

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

I came across this recipe and thought it looked yummy! I haven't run it through a calorie calculator or actually tried making it so I can't comment too much on it. If anyone tries it, let me know. It seems like it would make a great side for dinner or lighter lunch.

Yield: 6 entree sized servings

Ingredients

Salad
  • 1 cup millet
  • 1/2 cup quinoa
  • 3 cup water
  • 1 cups fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1 mango, cubed
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup yellow onions, diced

Lemon poppy seed dressing
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1.5 tbsp raw unpasteurized honey
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp poppyseeds
  • 1/4 tsp herbamare

Directions
Place millet and quinoa in a strainer and rinse in cold water for a couple of seconds.

Place rinsed grains in a medium sized saucepan and combine with water. Cover and bring to a boil.

Once boiling, reduce heat to simmer and allow to cook for 10-15 minutes, or until water has absorbed. Remove from heat and allow to sit with the lid on for 10 minutes before removing and allowing to cool.

Meanwhile, combine remaining salad ingredients in a large bowl. Add lukewarm or chilled grains. Stir to combine.

In a small bowl, mix together lemon poppy seed dressing ingredients before pouring over the salad. Serve at room temperature or cold.

Good Afternoon Team!

Vicky - No, we have not logged continuing miles, I do keep a weekly record, we often do 100 - 125 miles a week. Scott always has a few more than me because he will ride ahead then circle around back to me a few times on any ride. Might try the alternative non-jumping jacks. I have not yet seen Harry Potter either - will wait for it to be released on DVD - then will hopefully get the last 2 together so I can watch them together.

Kim - How are you doing today?

Dave - The 10 mile walk should help the 10 hour day go faster (at least you should feel better at work!)

Mike - Good that Robert is doing well in Kindergarten!

Tandy - Yes, headwinds are no fun! Take care of your nagging injuries! Congrats on weekly win of BL challenge!

Elizabeth - Will your ortho allow you to ride bikes? It has helped my knees so much I am a big proponent of bike riding when you cannot run or walk!

AFM - Had to take the car back into the shop this morning, they found a leak in the water pump while they were doing the oil change, it is covered under warrantee, so no cost to me to fix it. I had to leave the car, got a ride back home from their shuttle service. As it still wasn’t too hot, I took the dogs for a 5K walk this morning, first 5K I have done for awhile, did not do too badly, might actually make it thru the DL 5K without being swept. Then, as it was windy, went downstairs for a Pilates tape. Next chore is to clean the house! May not make it back tomorrow morning - we will be headed out as soon as Scott’s flight gets back to Cheyenne, for the MS ride. Have a great weekend all, and good luck to any of you who are racing this weekend!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

This will be a great training weekend for me since the weather has changed for the better. I'm going to try for a 4 mile PR this morning and Sunday another 10 miler. I'm resting well, eating goos and training hard so I should see some more improvement soon, hopefully today.

Good to see that everyone is doing good, sure wish that Lynn and Scott were going to be at the January weekend events though. Looking forward to the friday team breakfast and the day of park hopping.

Dave:hippie:

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Go Hakuna Matada!! Check out all the races we've got going on this weekend!! I think Dave is racing too? Good luck everyone!!

August
20 - Madison Mini Marathon, Madison, WI - Mike
20 - A Midsummer Night's Run 30K, Toronto, ON - Vicky
20 - A Midsummer Night's Run 15K, Toronto, ON - Kim
21 - Danskin Women's Triathlon Pleasant Prairie, WI - Liz
21 - Windrunner 10K, Wheaton, IL - Rick

Previous PR for my 4 mile hill route was 46:12, that was a week and a half ago. My new PR today was 45:26 that another 46 sec improvement. I'm very excited about how well my training is progressing. Since the stock market is sucking, smart pandas are investing in good healthy food and getting lots of exercise as an investment in living good in retirement.

Vicky I'm not racing again until Sept 5, labor day, there is a good walk race with prize money so there should be some good race walkers to test my self against. Once again I want to be in the top 5, maybe the top 3 finishers. If I keep up the steady improvement I may be a contender.

Good luck to everyone who is racing.
