Hakuna Matada - Getting fit and fabulous for August

Dave: We are at Kona, can't remember the time to be honest but I know for sure it is KONA......TONGA TOAST!!!!! just sayin':rolleyes1

Tandy: OMG...HUGS AND PD to you. Yes they say things come in 3's so you should be done now right Take care of yourself:hug:

Lynn: WTG on the 30M ride, I will check out those seats, I really want to do a TRI and the bike part scares me more then the swim.

Mike: You and Liz are doing great, sounds you have had quite the weekend!!!

AFM: Doing good still exercise is consistant but I have started to get a pain along in the instep of my left foot not like PF but more of a burning sensation very weird. Food is on track, still no pop which some moments is hard but other times I just don't miss it, I have started to have a vitamin water each day to break up the water, water, water. Also I am down to 1 cup of tea per day and no coffee. Was tired the first few days of the week and a bit of cramping in my legs but it seems to have passed.

Have a super day all

Is that the name of the restraunt, Kona? It's in the Poly resort, where Ohanna is?

Dave:hippie:

Yup that is the name of the restaurant it is at Poly, almost right beside O'Hanna's. It is just a small little place but good food.

That Konga Toast thing just what is that and does it have more calories and pudge than a rack of ribs with a side of bacon and onion rings?

Dave:hippie:

Tandy~ Pixie Dust for all your injuries! I hope the calf isn't as bad as you suspect. Sorry that you are going through so much pain.

Dave~ YOU are the machine! I just race to get out of housework! Next year will be only a few races, as we want to pay off some outstanding debt. Then the skys the limit on traveling for races! Tonga Toast is very thick french toast, stuffed with warm bananas and rolled in cinnamon sugar. You have to put syrup on it to tone down the sweetness. I'll be having TWO!

Vicky~ I don't care what your time was on your 30k, you did great. (and probably looked great doing it also!) I've had races where things just didn't work. You still gained experience, and probably a mad desire to have a stellar race next time!
Question: did you make a reservation for our team meals? or are we each making our own at the appointed times?

Lynn~ great job on your long rides! Keep it up! See you and Scott in about eight days!

Kim~ I want you to know that I read about all your great workouts and get mad at myself for not doing more. You are inspiring me!

Mary~ I'm sorry to hear about your DD's store! I hope she can move the product online.
We are using the Grayline bus service from the airport to the DL Hotel, and again to Universal. Seemed reasonable for both.

AFM~ I haven't run since my race on Saturday, so I want to get out today. But, last night I was cleaning up some broken bags of ice in our freezer at work and one of the bags split open and a large chunk (about ten pounds) landed solidly on my right big toe. Felt like I hit it with a sledge hammer. Its still majorly sore. Grrrr!
Rick (runrookie) and I met up for a nice breakfast yesterday. He is off to Space camp this weekend, but we plan on meeting more for some training runs after I get back from the DL half. We are also planning some race together. Go figure...

Have a great day everyone! Mike :cool2:

Hi, all,

Rick: Congrats on the first 10k!
Emily: Love the shirts!
Mary: Sorry about your DD's business. I hope that she can recoup some with the online store.
Mike: Great race report; terrible hotel!
Tandy: Oh my, sending pixie dust your way and hoping you are on the mend
Vicky: I haven't posted since your 30k report. What Mike said is true, you learned a lot from the experience. I think you did great!

AFM: I'm still not able to run but I'm riding a bike and swimming. I forgot what I was doing this Saturday while we were at the beach and raced with my girls in the sand. I'm happy to say that I easily beat them and the pain wasn't too bad afterward:laughing: It feels good to have your children say, "Wow Mom, you are fast!"

Keeping my fingers crossed for all of you in Irene's path. Here in NC she is all we can think about.

Happy training, everyone!

All those on the eastern seaboard please be safe over the next few days:grouphug:

Mike: Thank you for the kind words and ouch....never fails whenever I drop something it always lands on my toe. Hope it is better today.

Dave: Yes Tonga toast has about a billion calories but hey there is some banana in it so that is good for you right;):rolleyes1

My legs are extremely sore this morning and I am beginning to think it has more to do with caffine withdrawl then workouts as it is hurting more not less. This happened last time I went completely off pop and coffee and I caved because it was the beginning of my goofy training and last thing I wanted was sore lets but since my next event is a 1/2 relay with DD and not till the end of Sept I am going to try and wait this out. The symptoms can't last that long can they:scared1::headache:

Have a great Friday all.

Good luck Eva!!

August
28 - Buckeye Half Marathon & Relays - Eva

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! Sorry to have been MIA! It's just really busy at work :) I'm still "recovering" so I haven't run at all. I didn't want a repeat of last year where I started running too soon after a race and injured my knee. I have a wedding this weekend so I'll be doing a bit of running around between nail, hair and makeup appointments LOL

Tandy - Ouch! Lots and lots of  and pixiedust: for you! I hope you get good news from the sports doc. In the meantime, take things easy!

Mike - Thanks for the words of encouragement! I picked up a couple of electrolyte supplements so I'll be playing with those over the next week or so. I made reservations for 12 at Kona (Friday) and 6 at Chef Mickey's (Sunday). I'll repost the names and dates that I have for each reservation. Hope your big toe feels better soon! pixiedust:

Dave - Lots of calories in Tonga Toast I think - in addition to what Mike said, I think it's fried as well. It's very sweet and then you can still add strawberry sauce and pancake syrup :) I'm not a fan of bananas so I don't order it but I've tried it before and the bread part is quite yummy!

Elizabeth - Sounds like you had a great time at the beach! Stay safe! I hope Irene doesn't destroy too much when she hits land.

Kim - WTG with the water! Going off caffeine is hard!! I've cut back on coffee except for race day  I need all the help I can get! Have you tried green tea? It has a bit of caffeine and it's supposedly good for your joints. That way, you wouldn't have to go cold turkey.

I promise to catch up with everyone later! :wave2:

Awesome training walk this morning. I did my 4 mile time trial on my hilly course. Knocked off another 11 sec from last weeks PR, new PR is 45:15. Another step closer to the magic sub 40 min 4 miler. The best thing was I fell super after, I could have easily maintained that speed for another couple of miles and made it a 10K. I'm shooting for a sub 30 min 5K by the end June next year when the State Games come along in July next year.

Kimmer, my opinion, soft drinks are bad, the worst kind of bad, a mix of chemicals. I think they are a big contributer to a lot of health problems especially cancer amoung the civilized world. Coffee on the other hand naturally occurs in nature and is a real food made of natrural ingredients. I drink a couple of cups a day and enjoy it. Lots of long term studies sing the goodness of coffee. Tea also.

Let's all think of each day as a new beginning and forgiveness for all the bad habits of the past. God promises forgiveness, shouldn't we take that as a sign that we should forgive ourselves and press on with our journey to being the best we can be with the time we have.

Dave:hippie:

Ouch, Kim! I believe that caffeine withdrawals can last 1-2 weeks.

What if you cut your caffeine out gradually? I'm trying to get off caffeine too so I restricted my consumption to after 3 p.m., then after noon. Next will be restricting it after 10 a.m.

Dave has a point, maybe cut out the soda and limit yourself to natural forms of caffeine?

Good luck!

Hi team. Hope everyone had a good week. It's Friday!!!!!!

Elizabeth: I'm glad you are okay after your run. It's hard to remember you can't do that right now. ;) I will be thinking of all you east coasters this weekend.

Dave: Great job, as usual. Like your paragraph at the end.

Vicky: It's good to take a week off after a big race. I'm a huge fan! Enjoy the wedding. Would love to see a pic of the dress. :)

Kim: No, those symptoms won't last too much longer, I promise. I went through this last year. Keep up the good work!:thumbsup2

Mike: Ouch! Seeing that I just did that last weekend, I really do feel your pain. Just tape it to the toe next to it, and take painkillers. :thumbsup2

AFM: Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes. But, they were in vain. My calf is, in fact, torn! :headache: I'm in a walking boot/cast thing and have no idea how long this will last. I go back in 2 weeks for the first check up. If it's not better, we'll be talking surgery. If it's a little better, we'll be talking PT. Either way, my running plans are screwed. I am going to have a long recovery for this thing. :sad1: The good news is that all my other injuries will have plenty of time to heal. My doctor knows that my main concern is getting back to running, so he's looking out for me. He deals with sports injuries as a specialty.

I also made it through the first week of school! :thumbsup2 I only have 4 more until my CNA class is over, then, it's only school 2 days a week. :yay:

I hope everyone on the east coast is safe.

Hi Team!

Tandy- I am so sorry to hear your calf is torn and all these injury issues you are having. That must be so disappointing. I’m glad your Dr. is looking out for you. I have decided I am going to permanently give up soda. It’s already been a few weeks and I may as well. We will see how I feel. Do you add anything to the powdered PB2 or eat it in powder form?

Vicky- Thanks! Lol, I had that same problem with bringing snacks to work also. So what I did is get all my snacks and stuff together the night before so all I had to do was grab it on my way out the door. I would set it right next to my bag that goes with me or something else I always take in the morning so I would see it and grab it. Your friend is very lucky!!! I’m glad she was astute and could recognize the con artists. Does her brother like being a TA? How does one even go about getting into that field?? Hmm, I thought the ending was pretty close, but yes there were changes. I think they had to change parts of it to make it fit with previous changes they made in the movies? I hope the wedding goes ok!

Emily- Thanks! I’m sorry you LR Saturday didn’t go well for you. I’m sure the DL ½ will be much better. I like your shirts! Thanks for posting pics! Did you just iron them on? Did you create the Mickey heads yourself?

Rick- Congrats on finishing your first 10K race! Great job!

Kim- I think the hard part about giving up soda is when you’re eating out. At least that seems to be when I have the most trouble in thinking “well maybe if I just had one…” Lol luckily, I am able to tell myself no. DH is going to give up soda with me too. I don’t think he’s too happy about it because he loves Diet Coke, but I think he wants to do it. Congrats on your weight loss so far!!! That is wonderful news! You’ve obviously been working really hard!! I did see your FB post, and noticed a couple others too, but I figured it was like a chain thing. I didn’t realize FB was doing it all by itself! I’m glad it helped motivate you though. Take care of that foot!

Mary- I’m sorry to hear your daughter in CO has closed her shop. I’m sure that was difficult for her to do.

Dave- I’m happy to hear your training is still going really well. You are doing awesome!!! LOL, I’ll remember your tip on the BBQ sandwiches and baked beans.

Lynn- So then you still have a couple months of weeding to go. Have a safe trip! You are getting lots of exercise in on the bike!

Mike- Great race report! I can’t believe the trouble you had at the hotel and thought your commentary on your neighbors was funny. I would have been so angry!

Elizabeth- Glad to hear you are doing ok.

Eva- Good luck this weekend!!!

AFM, I am ashamed to report my weight this week. I don’t even want to type it because it’s the worst weight I’ve ever been. It was 140.2! :scared1: It is the highest I have ever weighed and I feel like I’m moving backwards. I am so ashamed. :headache: What upsets me the most about it is that I do not understand how I gained another 2lbs this week. I have been drinking my water and exercising regularly. I cut out soda and haven’t been overeating or eating really bad foods. I just don’t understand and it was so discouraging to actually feel good about everything this week and then see that I obviously did something wrong, but don’t know what. I got all of my running in (3 and 4 miles) and even kept going a little farther for a few days to hit the hour mark of exercise so I would still have my exercise in for the week. I was really pleased with my exercise this week and am feeling good about continuing it.

So here are my points:
Weight loss: 0
Water: 1 point
Fruits/Veggies: 0
New food/dish: 1 point
Exercise: 1 point
Daily Vitamin: 0
Temptation: 1 point
Exercise of the week: 0

I really hope I start to see progress as I continue to get my exercise in and my mileage starts increasing over the next few months. The temptation I am going to avoid this next week is again going to be skipping any planned workouts. My legs have been really tired today from running/walking when they aren't used to running/walking anymore. I hope that gets better as I continue to move forward.

I hope everyone else had a much better weight loss week than me!!! Looking forward to reading some more positive stuff!

Regina: Don't be too hard on yourself. Weight fluctuates all the time. It is a sign of things, but can't be counted on for everything. You are doing healthy things, so you are healthy. :thumbsup2 I add the water to the PB2 if I'm going to eat it as peanut butter. But, my favorite thing so far is to add the choc0late pb2 to plain greek yogurt and add a packet of Splenda. It's really good and even has more protein that just the greek yogurt.

Vicky: I forgot to give you my info for this week:
1 pt for exercise
0 pts for exercise challenge (really wanted to, but got sidetracked every day)
1 pt for water
1 pt for veg/fruit
1 pt for vitamin
1 pt for temptation (still no desserts)
1 pt for new food (pb2)
.5 pts for weight loss (131.5)

6.5 total points

There will be no more exercise points for me, so I'm going to have to step it up in weight loss, I guess. :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone!

Just a quick check in, I'll catch up on the posts tonight during lunch...

Tandy~ I'm so sorry about your calf. Liz tore her ACL about 18 months ago. We know how hard it is to sit on the sidelines and wait to heal. Maybe you can do some upper body workouts to help.

Kim~ Caffine is my one vice. Diet Mountain Dew is something I crave like people crave coffee. Your body will adjust. There is a product called Water Joe, which is just bottled water with caffine in it. I don't know if it is available near you, if it is, it can help with the cravings.

Eva~ Good luck this weekend! May all your training give you a new PR!

AFM~ Ugg! Three more nights of work and I'm on vacation until the 12th. The work hours are dragging.... I just made the last of our ADRs for DL and I have California on the brain. It's hard to focus on the chores that I need to get done.
Liz is at the gym doing a 23 mile training run on the treadmill. I told her to go by herself as I would have to stop and bang my head on the wall to break the monotony. I've got 18 scheduled for tomorrow morning after work, outside.

Have a great day everyone! Mike :cool2:

Good Morning Team!

Kim - Bike seat is “Selle Italia”, I did a bit of internet research, I had been using the Terry Butterfly, which also gets good reviews, but did not work well for me. They say the real way to test seats is for several girls get together and buy different seats then trade them all around, as what works for one will not necessarily work for another. I did not have that option, but am glad I found something that works on my second try! It will never feel great, but what I have feels alot better than what I had! Time in the saddle also helps. I drink coffee, but only in the morning, no caffeine for me after noon, or I cannot sleep - but if I skip the caffeine in the morning, I will get a headache.

Dave - Kona Cafe is in the Polynesian, yes, it is next to O’Hana’s. You will see it as you exit the monorail. Tonga Toast is 2 slices of bread, bananas in between, battered like French Toast and deep fried, covered in cinnamon sugar - yes about the same calories as rack of ribs, side of bacon and onion rings!!!!

Mike - Pixie Dust for your toe, hope it recovers quickly!

Regina - Yes, I am still working on weeding the rocks!

Tandy - Pixie Dust for your injuries!!! Sorry about your calf injury! More Pixie Dust for quick recovery!

Elizabeth - Good luck with your biking and swimming!

AFM - We are back from camping - took the dogs and the camper and went to Steamboat Springs to catch the US Pro Challenge Bike Race come in to Steamboat, then the next morning, we headed to Rabbit Ears Pass to catch them climbing the hill on their way out. It was just like at the Tour de France! We were disappointed that we did not make it on TV when we got home to watch the stages. We did get a 16 mile bike ride in before we left on Thursday.

I don’t think I posted points for this week either, get confused with these weekend trips - but not much - again - 1pt for exercise, 1 pt for water, 1 pt for vitamins, 1 pt for 1 pound lost ( I am down to 136, do not think I counted that last pound yet, as I lost and gained it back last week). I will count 1 pt for new food (hamburger helper we tried on our camping trip - not terribly healthy, but it was a new food!). That gives me a total of 5 points.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn I think I'll pass on the Tonga toast, but some eggs sasuage and potatoes would be super if they have that.

Had an awesome long day yesterday with good friends in Louisville. We also took in a Bat's baseball game and watched a good fireworks show after. We didn't get home till midnight and just fell into bed. I normally sleep till 5am but this morning I didn't get up till 7:30.

My workout was an hour tempo walk with Sally following along on her bicycle. It felt about 5 miles but I didn't measure it. I'm feeling super and so decided it was time to join the USATF so I could do the sanctioned, judged races. They had a special first membership for $10. I need that level of competition now to keep my dreams and goals fresh. How magical would it be to turn 60 and earn a age group record at some distance.

Yeah I dream big. Grrrrr!

My workout tomorrow early will be speed work with another team panda athlete. I plan 6 X 400m at 10 mpm pace with 400m recovery intervals. Two mile warm up and 2 mile cool down.

I ended up the week with 27 good quality race walk miles, 2 rest days and a 4 mile PR. Good week.

Hope everyone had a super weekend and ready to resume your journey to your destiny.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Good luck with your competition status!

AFM - not much to report yesterday, I got the dogs for their morning walk, but we did not get out on the bikes - maybe today, if it looks like we can avoid the rain - very cloudy today - at least it is cooler. I did run up and down stairs quite a bit as I was packing for our trip to DL. We will be gone a week, and staying in a condo, since no car, we decided to pack most of our food, since it would be difficult to get to a grocery store. We will just pick up the stuff like milk at the small convenience store at Grand Californian. We are now mostly packed, just some last minute stuff to put in bags.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! Happy Monday! Sorry I haven't been around much - work is busy with everyone getting ready for the long weekend! I'll be back to update the weight loss challenge. I haven't been doing that well with it myself lately - I had 0 loss the previous week and a gain of 1.5 last week. Oops!

Panda approved workout this morning was 6 X 400m walk sprints with 400m recovery walks between. Times were all around 10 min per mile pace. Two mile warm up before the intervals and two mile cool down walk after.

I did the yard today also. It has been so dry that it was pretty brown and dorment but the weeds were going strong.

How is everyone's marathon training going? I'm doing another 10 miler at the Wednesday group walk. I have a half, the USAF on the 17th of Sept. After that I'll start adding more weekly miles till I get to about 30 to 35 average, that's plenty for me if they are good quality training miles.

Vicky do you ever stop and just relax?

Lynn how are the knees?

Dave:hippie:
