Haiti Earthquake - is there a thread?

I hope they are all OK and are able to get home soon.

I've been glued to CNN and the other news sites... my mom is in Haiti on a medical mission trip. Communication has been horrid. I think she's injured, but do not know for sure.

There's a donated private jet sitting in Miami, poised to fly into Haiti and get her group out tomorrow (please, please, please).

I'm told that several of the people in her group of 12 are injured, 2 of them "seriously". But no information on the nature of the injuries or which of the travelers are injured. We haven't been able to talk with any of the mission team directly.

Information is so hard to come by, the coverage on CNN and the social networking sites today was all we really have.

For now, all we can do is pray and wait for them to be on the US-owned plane for some reliable information.

As more informaiton and stories come out in the days to come, I imagine there will be a lot more for people to talk about.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tremendous tragedy. There is a large Haitian population in the Orlando area Many are CM's and we cannot begin to imagine what they must be going through.

WMK, I hope your Mom is ok & you can get word or get her out as soon as possible. I can't even imagine. :guilty:

Oh Kathy, I'm hoping your mom is okay and is home with you soon. Prayers go up for all affected by this terrible tragedy.

Our problem now is that we have a plane ready to go, but absolutely no way to get our people (with some injured) *to* the airport.

:guilty: And it's only going to get worse with every passing hour.

I assume she's an American citizen. If so call your Congressman/woman's offices immediately and see what they can do. They are in the process of getting all American citizens evacuated if injured. They flew a few of them to GITMO (my mom lives there and I did many moons ago). I don't know all the facts but I guarantee you the Coast Guard and other Navy vessels from GITMO are already in Haiti to get the rest of the injured out ASAP.

The air force has deployed a team to the airport now and planes can now land at the airport in Haiti. The army special forces has also deployed now to that area. If need be they can airlift straight from where your mom's group to the airport instead of the group trying to travel there themselves. If you find that nothing is happening for them today, call your local congress person's office and the governor's office. Seriously!

Another source I saw on the news this morning is this number 1-888-40-4747. It can be called to check on your mom's group and give them all details. I will pray for your mom's group in addition to all the others.

You missed a number, just want to correct it 1-888-407-4747.

I just started a thread about the Text Drive. I'll repeat my post here in case this becomes an official thread. I can't believe there hasn't been much on here, either.

The American Red Cross allows anyone in the U.S. to text HAITI to 90999 as an easy way to donate $10 to the recovery effort. The money is billed to your mobile phone account. According to the latest tally, the Red Cross has already raised over $800,000 through text messages.

I just did this and once you send your text, you will receive a text back asking you to confirm your donation. Text back yes and your donation will be made.

Snopes link to confirm it is not a scam: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/haiti.asp

You can also text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 to the Haiti relief effort. Yele Haiti is the organization that Wyclef Jean (of the Fugees) had established a few years ago.

Does the word Haiti have to be in all caps? I texted, but I still haven't gotten a message wanting to confirm my donation, I'm not sure if I did it right.

I think I did all caps, but I haven't seen or heard that it had to be in caps.
Do you have Altel? I know some people with Altel were having issues. Also Canadiens cannot use this method to donate

I got my confirmation, thanks!

I've gotten word that my mom's team has all made it to the airport in Haiti, apparently transported there by UN vehicles. Still not a lot of info on when they'll fly out, (sounds like they've been cleared through the State
Dept for military transport), or what destination, but this is very welcome progress.

This is a trajedy. 9 million people are basically homeless.

Kathy - I hope all injuries are taken care of quickly.

TEXT the DISNEY CORPORATE OFFICES===> (818)-560-1000 and ask them to stand by their "corporate responsibility" pledge. Disney owns an island abt. 400 miles north of Haiti -- "Castaway Cay" (aka "Gordo Cay") -- and desalinates ocean water for their guests. Put pressure on Disney to provide potable water to Haiti via Dis ......ney cruise ships as long as is needed. PLEASE REPOST.

I am not doing that. People have booked vacations on those ships and it would not be right to take the ship to Haiti rather than the vacaton route.

Freight ships will be able to carry bottled water to Haiti. AB in the past has sent ships of bottle water to areas in need. I expect them to do the same thing.

This has hit me hard too as my parents were missionaries there and lived there for a few years. I was grown already, so I didn't live there the whole time, but did spend a fair amount of time in Haiti. My heart is just breaking, those people just never seem to catch a break, the extreme poverty, the corrupt government, they just don't have a chance, and now this. :sad1:

Another very reputable place to donate is through the Mennonite Disaster Relief...you can be assured your donation will reach it's intended recipients! You can go to mcc.org to donate.
