Haiti Earthquake - is there a thread?

I have watched A LOT of the coverage (including US stations), I have not heard a single person say or imply what the PP said. Nor could I find it online anywhere (it is, of course, possible that I'm just not Googling right).

It was said on Fox & Friends this morning. I'm not sure but I believe it was when they were interviewing Hillary. I could be wrong since I had it on all morning, but it was definitely said on that show.

I don't watch Fox&Friends (don't think we get it), so I wouldn't have heard that.

I'm only hoping that it was some sort of out of context slip of the tongue (not that I figure out a plausible scenario where the comment would be sensible).

I honestly can't even remember who said it but I think they were trying to say that because the poor lived mainly in tents that they would fair better than those who lost actual homes, whether they meant that as far as less would be injured or killed in rubble or whether they would be more able to adapt to being on the streets now I don't know. Either way I think it was a horrible thing to say and was quite shocked that they did.

One thing I felt was gratitude that there's an organization like Doctors Without Borders there helping. God bless them. They have so little supplies right now.

My DD told me that Dr's without Borders has lost so many of their Dr's who were over there. I had nto heard that but do believe it. I also heard that save the Children lost over 1/3 of their staff.

I just heard on WOR (NYC) radio that the 82nd Airborne and 2,000 Marines are being sent to Haiti to help with "possible civil unrest and coup attempts" instead of the National Guard.

Dr withour Borders is a wonderful cause as is Save the Children.

I hadn't heard that, but I know there were so many international relief workers there. And 22 of the United Nations staff (I think it was) have been killed. But thank God it's not stopping more relief workers from rushing there to help.

There may not be many posts people we just don't know what to say - we are safe in our homes, with food on our tables and we know where are loved ones are...those poor people don't have any of these things and who knows when or if they will in the near future. It is devasting to watch the video of it and I certainly cannot imagine living it. I pray for these people and for the families of those who have been affected by this tradegy. So, we sit, not writing about it because -what do we say? What do we do? We can only hope that their future days get better one by one and that relief will be there soon. I am sure we are all feeling terrible and wish that pixie dust could fix their absolutely terrible situation.

I also just heard that our country is giving 100 million dollars in aid. If only the heavy cement-moving equipment could get through, but the roads from the sea port and the airport are severely damaged, making it impossible.

Please don't start arguing, that is why so many were probably reluctant to start a thread such as this.

I can understand what they were saying about the house vs. the tent. There are no building codes in Haiti, if you lived in a concrete structure you are probably now buried beneath it. If you lived in a tent on farm you most likely were not crushed by that tent. I think that is all that was meant by that post.

As for helping, please just be sure to give to a reputable organization. ie: Red Cross, Save the Children, Unicef, etc. Be careful of "new" organizations that pop up out of nowhere.

I really don't think anyone posting on these boards means any harm, sometimes we just don't know the right thing to say. I'm sure we all just wish we knew what to do to help these people.

No news directly from Port-Au-Prince but we have received word indirectly that the relief efforts are ramping up from all international sources. From our standpoint, we have received and loaded the first relief supplies on Independence of the Seas, which will be taken to Labadee and distributed through Food For The Poor. We are also in the process of coordinating additional relief supplies that will be loaded on Navigator of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas, and will be taken to Labadee on Monday and Tuesday of next week. My thanks to our suppliers and members of our supply chain team for coordinating this, specifically Tom Weiland, Laura Pullens, Lisa Guia and Don Cope. The supplies we are sending include rice, dried beans, water, dried milk and a variety of other canned items. This effort is going to be a marathon, so we will be partnering with Food For The Poor on the back-end distribution in Haiti.

I am getting a lot of questions from everyone about how they can help. I have asked them to go to Food For The Poor and make a donation. This is the best and most effective way to assist in the relief effort right now.

Finally, I am happy to say we are committed to continuing calls to Labadee with Independence of the Seas tomorrow. There were a lot of discussions about this, but in the end, Labadee is critical to Haiti’s recovery and hundreds of people rely on Labadee for their livelihood. In our conversations with the U.N. Special Envoy of the Government of Haiti Leslie Voltaire, he notes that Haiti will benefit from the revenues that are generated from each call, which is critical to their recovery. We also have tremendous opportunities to use our ships as transport vessels for relief supplies and personnel to Haiti.

Simply put, we cannot abandon Haiti now that they need us most.

I'm not blaming you for what you heard, I am just incredulous that they are talking like that. It's another result of the 24 hour news cycle. Since they have to cover the stories for hours and days in a row, they have to fill the time with talk and more talk. I have to imagine they are not thinking straight. Honestly, which reporter would say this?

I heard it several times on CNN yesterday, though what they were saying was that people who were living in "lesser" housing, e.g. those without heavy roofs, were more fortunate because if their roofs did cave in, there was less of a chance of them being killed outright in the collapse. Those who were in homes with heavy roofs that collapsed didn't stand much of a chance.

I just have to say that the support that is coming in around the world,....I was watching the today show yesterday and they were saying China and Japan were flying in with supplies and people.. I think this is great that the whole world is chipping in to help find people and help the injured... There is so many people that are lost and injured that they need all the help they can get.....
