Hairdressers or Barbers for teen son's haircut?

I have two adult sons. Both grew up going the barber with their dad. One still goes to local barbers, loves it. One goes to the same hairdresser as his girlfriend.

If he's never been to a barber, at least let him try it. My son switched to a barber in university, and he loves it. He said he and his friend are now firm believers in every man having a good barber lol.

My son hasn't said he feels uncomfortable or doesn't want to go the salon anymore. My husband has just randomly decided it's time for a change!!

He probably feels it time for your son to become a “man.” But there’s nothing wrong with going to a salon if they do a good job and your son feels comfortable there.

Tell hubby to let his son decide when, if ever, it’s time to go to a barber.

I’ve been debating the same thing. I’ve been taking my son to the barber for several years, but he’s gone longer shaggy hair look in the last year or so. I feel a hairdresser is more suited to what his hair is now vs the barber shop. The barbers I’ve taken him to have been predominately male stylists with clean cut shaved looks, I rarely see scissors being used which is what we need now. So I’m no help, but see your predicament!

If he likes the way his hair is getting cut now, there is no reason to change. My 50 year old S.O. gets his hair cut by a hairdresser, as does my teenage son. It sounds like your husband is concerned that going to a hairdresser is effeminate. It isn't.

I think it depends on cut. Longer hair should be hairdresser. Shorter cuts barber if for no other reason cheaper!

There's still barber shops in America lol.

We have a lot of them, mostly male barbers, some cater to the younger crowd, my husband prefers old school barber shops over the metrosexual fancy ones.

I would give your son the option of switching to the barber and let him decide. My DH and two adult sons used to just go to Supercuts. Recently they found a nearby salon that they all like. It's staffed by two women and a man and all three do a good job with haircuts. They take walk-ins which makes it convenient for them to stop in for a cut. DS23 went to my hairdresser once when he needed to get his hair highlighted for a show (he was in American Idiot and had to look the part!). He went back after the show to have his hair dyed back to it's normal color. Otherwise, he's fine with a walk-in place.

FWIW, at least here in America, there really aren't "barbers" much anymore. There are chain places that cater to men, but most are staffed by female stylists.

Another vote for .....not here. Every few blocks there is a Barber Shop with a pole, and not a stylist in them.

I have always cut my teen boys hair. I'm really good at it, and it's free so I have no advice. I'd say let your son decide. FWIW, at least here in America, there really aren't "barbers" much anymore. There are chain places that cater to men, but most are staffed by female stylists. My own stylist is a very straight, married with kids, dirt bike riding guy. And he's amazing. He doesn't have many male clients, though. At the end of the day, you just have to find someone who can cut your hair the way you like it. The setting doesn't matter. I cut my husband's hair weekly for 20 years until he decided to shave it due to thinning hair. He actually hated how barber shops would cut his hair. He preferred when I did it.

There are quite a few in the Inland Empire in Southern California. I see tons of advertisements in the local groups

DH and DS have always gone to a barber. I started taking DS around age 3 and he’s now 24. Plenty of barber shops around here, many of the old-school style that end with a hot towel wrap. And yes, they generally charge significantly less for a haircut. When DS was little, we paid his age (plus tip) up to age 15. Difference from a salon is they don’t typically wash or blow dry hair (at least my guys didn’t get that), but they do offer shaves and other services. YMMV.

Just a personal preference really. As others have said, I’d let your son try it and decide for himself.

They are just as professional as the hair stylist. They aren't going to cut his shirt

I think if your husband goes to a true barber and not just a Great Clips kind of place, then your son will get a good haircut there.

The local place our family goes to is 2 sided. Barbers and stylists who take walk ins on one side and stylists who take appointments on the other.

Occasionally, the stylists are not busy and they'll take me for a cut, other times, I get a cut at the walk in side.

My husband and sons started going there after their other long time barber/friend died.

Bingo, problem solved.
