Hairdressers or Barbers for teen son's haircut?

Barbers know how to cut long hair. This isn't the guy at boot camp that knows how to do one haircut whether you want it or not.

I take my son to my barber because we make it a father son thing. Every once in a while we take him to the kids cut place that plays Daniel Tiger but he has never been to my wife's salon. He is also 4 so if he were older I'd just ask him.

If this level of anguish goes into deciding where your kid's hair gets cut I can't imagine the difficulty in making actual decisions.

I have two sons. DS10 has very long and extremely thick hair. It's so thick that he has to get it thinned twice a year. I take him to a salon and he's very picky about which salon and hairdresser he goes to. A barber usually isn't trained in thinning hair the way my son's hair needs to be thinned. DS14 has a shaggy haircut. It's not a traditional barbershop style but I think a more trendy barbershop would be able to cut his hair the way he likes it. He prefers a different salon than his brother prefers. We've asked him if he'd like to try a barbershop and he's said no so I take him to the salon.

It's their hair. As long they take care of it, stay within school dress codes, and keep it looking reasonably neat, we let them do what they want, depending on the price.
I had very thick hair, which is probably why at age 64 I still have so much hair. Never been anywhere but a barber shop, and never had a barber who didn't have thinning shears and knew how to use them. You need a barber license' to use a straight razor to shave necks and around ears. If you go to a hair dresser, and they don't have a barber's license, they can only use an electric razor, so you won't get cleaned up as well.

My younger son has thick hair that's halfway down his back. The technique for thinning long hair is different.

Both sons prefer to go to a hairdresser. The barbers around here don't know what to do with longer hair or less traditional cuts. Those that do are just as expensive as a hairdresser.
