So, some friends of mine are getting married later this month and the groom just called me for help picking out his song for his dance with his mom. He'd prefer something that hasn't been done to death. I really like the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" melody. Any ideas?

I am your child - by Barry Manilow

My mom and I danced to Danny Boy - But that really only works if your name is Dan.

My DH and his Mother danced to Rod Stewart's "Have I told you lately that I Love You."

John Lennon's Beautiful Boy or Bob Dylan's Forever Young (I danced with my Dad to that song 19 years ago.....it can work either way -- father and daughter or mother and son). I love the words:

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young

:)

My DS#1 and I danced to Carly Simon's "Love of my Life". DS #2 says he wants "The Sandman" by Noel Paul Stookey, because that was the lullaby that I sang to him when he was little, but I don't think we'll ever find a copy of the Band & Bodyworks album (yes, I said album) that it's on. I like Barbara Mandrell's "I'll Leave Something Good Behind".

"A Song for my Son" by New Traditions- it's a song written by a mother for her son on his wedding day. Caution my MIL cried her eyes out during her dance w/ DH at our wedding. Here are the words. Awesome song!!!

I don't know where
The time has gone
Since those little boy days
Doesn't seem that long
Yet here you are
It's your wedding day
And there's one thing darling
I'd like to say...

(chorus)

Be kind, be sweet
Be a gentle man
Care and share
And always be fair
And remember though you now
Have taken a wife
You will always be my son
My Loving son

You filled my life
With so much joy
As I watched you grow
From that little boy
Now I'll try not to cry
As you walk away
And just once more darling
I'd like to say...

(chorus)

Be kind, be sweet
Be a gentle man
Care and share
And always be fair
And remember though you now
Have taken a wife
You will always be my son
My Loving son

DH danced with his mom to "Because you Loved Me" by Celine Dion. Diane Warren wrote it in honor of her father. It seems like a sappy love song but when you read the lyrics, it really is more fitting for a parent/child relationship.

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I’ll be forever thankful baby
You’re the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You’re the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I’m grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don’t know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You’ve been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn’t speak
You were my eyes when I couldn’t see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach
You gave me faith ’coz you believed
I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

I’m everything I am
Because you loved me

My husband and his mom danced to Blessed by Elton John.

How about "You Raise me Up" by Josh Groban

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up... to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up... to more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
And I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up... to more than I can be.
You raise me up... to more than I can be.

Thanks guys... these are fantastic suggestions, keep them coming!

I also just remembered what another friend of mine said once... that his mom wanted them to dance to "Simple Man" if he ever got married.

Simple Man (Skynyrd, obviously)
Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... don’t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you’ll find love,
And don’t forget son,
There is someone up above.

(chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

Boy, don’t you worry... you’ll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

I didn't know this - how cool! I danced to this song with my daddy at my wedding.

My cousin's husband danced with his mom to "Loves Me Like a Rock" by Paul Simon. They had a lot of fun with it.

 My DS used to sing this to me when he was very little. Every time I hear it I cry :lovestruc

I didn't read the other posts (as soon as I saw this I teared up & had to post) so if this has been said please excuse. I have heard the grooms mom should pick the song (as the brides groom usually picks a song from him to her) Dh picked his song to dance with his Mom to. I always wondered if she felt she missed telling him how she felt via their song. Just my 2cents.

My Dad and I danced to Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

That's so cool!

I do love the IZ tune as well. That's a really good idea and definitely unique--at least around these parts!

at our wedding I danced with Dad to Daddy's hands by Holly Dunn
I danced with my two Grandfather to The Judds Grandpa 1/2 of the song each
DH danced with his Mom to Jim Croce's song Photographs and Memories

"You'll be in my heart" ....... from Tarzan

It's "our" song (my son and I) and we'll dance to that song when he marries "someday".
He's only 10 now, but it's still our song. :goodvibes

DH and his mom danced to :Special Angel"
