Grocery store Check-out pet peeves...

i worked as a clerk in a drug store--

the first is when you have a line of people and parents thinks its cute to let there 2 or 3 year old to pay (the kid insists on it parents give in)

they say "give the nice lady the money"

jr says no and holds the money back--

this usually becomes a battle between parent an child--with the money landing up on the floor and parent scrambling to pick it all up :rotfl2: --

next is what I see at the grocery store on a busy Fri or Sat AM

alot of checkouts open but lines in all of them 5 or 6 people in each--

and people waiting till after all the groceries are rung up--then wipe out comes the check book and they first start writing out the check---they could have the check written out except for the total while waiting in line :confused3

gotta love it!!!!

I have a pet peeve!! I HATE it when I'm in line at the grocery store and the person behind me is all on my back and neck. I feel like they are trying to push me along. Hello, step back and wait your turn.

Sometimes it seems that they are trying to get a good look at my credit card, too. I'll glance back at them and wait for them to take a step back before I go to sign the slip. Or sometimes they'll actually get up to the shelf where I need to sign the CC slip, in which case I have to say excuse me (yes, I still say it nicely :) ) until they take a step back.

Sometimes my kids will crowd the people in front, in which case I joke with my kids that they need to stay with me and not crowd the people in front unless they are planning on going home with them. And then I tell them to look at what those people are buying before deciding. My kids are old enough to know I'm joking, we all get a laugh, and my kids move back with me. :rotfl:

teva, I knew you'd look it up! :lmao: I really just looked it up as a joke and you should have seen the look on my face when I saw those entries. :crazy2:

I REALLY REALLY HATE TO ASK FOR MONEY FOR CHARITY!!! But, I HAVE TO DO IT!!!! :confused3 It is a requirement! It is part of "my Job". As I was told by the Assistant Manager today! :rolleyes2 So, again, Sorry! I wish I could just ring up the groceries and NOT say a word to anyone, but I would most likely be reported to the "Main Office" as not being "friendly". :confused3 :rolleyes1

Ditto!

It falls into that "and other duties assigned from time to time" category!

My personal all time top pet peeve in the grocery store check out is the people who can not/will not get off their cell phones. Actually anywhere someone has to deal with another person. I mean that is just rude. It is as if the person helping them is a second class citizen, not good enough to even be acknowledged.

I work at Babies R Us and I get customers fairly often that are on the phone and can't be bothered to get off while I help them. As cashiers we are required to ask certian questions every time we ring up a sale ~

"Hi how are you today?",
"did you find everything you needed?",
"are you shopping from a baby registry today?",
"do you need any gift receipts?",
"would you like to purchase the buyer protection plan to go with that stroller/car seat/breast pump?"

I just keep on interrupting their conversation to ask these idiotic questions ~if they can't be polite enough to get off the phone, then I can just keep on asking them :teeth:

I am not going to look anything up in the Urban Dictionary...

My Safeway is constantly playing Disney music because they want us to buy DL tickets there, which is great but sometimes it freaks me out a bit.

Cell phone story: I was at Safeway and saw this little boy playing with the coffee dispensers (you know, where you can fill a bag with beans..) I noticed his dad was way down at the other end of the aisle talking on his cell phone, so I told him not to do that. I walked just out of sight and heard him let a ton of beans out. I popped back over and asked if I needed to tell his daddy what he was doing. He shook his head.
Fast forward 10 minutes. I am in the checkout line and I see his dad shopping. He has one of those 'truck' carts and no kid in it. (Those truck carts are another huge pet peeve of mine...who invented those?) I see him realize that his kid is gone. HE NEVER GETS OFF THE PHONE!!! He walks up and down the front of the store, chatting on the phone. I see the manager with his sobbing son and point out the dad. :furious: GET OFF THE PHONE PEOPLE!!

Yeah, you'll have to ask Mom why she didn't keep me. :sad2:

My pet peeve is being paged by the hospital operator while I am in the check out line at the grocery. sorry if it bugs you for me to talk to the hospital operator and/or my patient while I'm standing in line behind you. I am a working parent, just like alot of the rest of the customers and the check out clerks. If I want to buy groceries for my family, I have to do it on the weekend, when my husband can watch my son for me for an hour or so.

Delilah - I have cashiered before, it's not about being in line with the person on the cell phone, it's about people on cell phones just ignoring the cashier. I understand there are emergencies that arise, and fo course that needs to be taken care of, but I would say that most of the converstations going on are just casual (they are standing right in front of me, I can't help but hear what the converstation is). We HAVE to speak to the customer. Do you know how ridiculus(sp?) it makes you feel to talk to a person on a cell phone who has no interest in talking back to you?

Especially since I think she kept a couple of the bad eggs! Um, 4 of the bad eggs, to be exact... and only kept one of the good eggs, ironically the egg that she isn't on speaking terms with.

Clearly you're the smart, straightlaced sister! :rotfl2:

DisneyGirl2005, that's my point and I'm not even a checker. I just think it's rude to be checking out while talking on a cell phone. And yes, I'm sure that someone can have a good reason, but most do not.

don't even get me started on the now required "do you want to put it on your xxxx card today?" and if you say no, they will then try to sign you up for a xxxxx rewards credit card.....

We don't have "rewards" cards, you save automatically with Publix! ;)

no, these are different. The stores I shop at now have visa/mastercards and they always ask if you want to put it on those. They also have the little keychain cards too which I always show, but I think the whole credit card thing is over the top!

My biggest pet peeve is when people cannot bag their own groceries. If there is know bagger I think people should help bag. It would make the line go much quicker. I also hate when people come up with small carry baskets and they can't empty them out. They wait for the cashier to do. I find that people are so lazy. People who work in the sevice industry with the public are not payed enough!!!

I used to be a cashier at publix my senior year of high school. so i def have sympathy for cashiers when I go to the store.

I used to hate when people would come into my express line, of 10 items or less only, and try to get away with like 30 items. One guy had about 20 cans of baby food, along with other items, and laughed saying since its all baby food it should count as 1 item. NOT!!

Whenever we had to sell charity things I never said anything to the customers about it. i figured, they saw the sign hanging on the register and if they wanted to donate then they could. And I did recieve plenty of donations. I did encounter quite a few rude people, but i always smiled and politely said hi how are you, and have a nice day at the end.
