Greyhound Dogs--Training Update #244

Awesome news! Makes my heart do a happy dance to see such a good boy go to a fantastic home. :goodvibes

While we wait for the latest Skeet update I'll share a little news about our greyhound, Chloe. I hope no one minds. She was in intensive care at our local veterinary teaching hospital for two weeks recently. The problem was probably a rare tick borne disease. She's now been home for 3 weeks and she's doing great. It was very scary and we are thrilled to have her back at home. Now back to our Skeet reports... :)

Has anyone on here with a greyhound ever gone to Greyhounds Reach the Beach in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware? just curious, I know some people come from pretty far away :)

No real updates on Skeet. He's decided that my den belongs to him, it's his favorite place to hang out. Every morning he carries all of his toys into there, then his blanket, and he settles in for a nap. Which lasts most of the day. I've been leaving his crate door open at night, and he's been sleeping all night. It's funny when he wakes up at some Godawful early hour on the weekends, he'll amuse himself for about 30 minutes by tossing one of his babies around the bedroom and pounding on it.

He's doing much better at walking on the leash and not going into greyhound freeze mode. He's met all the dogs in the neighborhood and has no problems with any of them, although he's scared of some of the smaller ones.

He's put on some weight, needs about two more pounds and he'll be at an idea weight for a pet grey.

He's gone from being a kennel dog to a houshold pet, and a member of the family.

That was such a happy post, and this actually brought tears to my eyes. I have way too many animals (3 dogs and a dozen cats - all spayed or neutered) because of the overflow of unwanted animals in our world. Thanks so much for taking the time and spending the energy it took to get to the point where you could write what I've quoted above.

Hooray for both of you! :thumbsup2

I'm glad things are better for Chloe too! :thumbsup2

I just remembered, I do have a Skeet story. As most of you know by reading this, I've also got two ferrets. Jasper is a smart and very wary boy, Pudge is a loveable but not the brightest bulb in the pack bull-in-a-china-shop girl. Pudge is unfortunately fearless as well.

Skeet ignores the ferrets when they are in their crate, but the one time I let him out when Jasper was out, Jasper started running so of course Skeet chased him, and Jasper ran under the nightstand with Skeet crashing headfirst into it.

Saturday I put Skeet's muzzle on and took him into my bedroom, where Pudge was playing. Pudge doesn't run, she just kind of hops. She's also expressed an interest in "meeting" Skeet. So I held Skeet and Pudge came over to meet him. As she was trying to sniff him, he was gingerly moving around, not wanting her to get too close to his feet--as if he was afraid she'd nip at him.

She got tired of sniffing and wandered off. I let Skeet go, and he walked over to sniff her. She started hopping around, trying to get him to play, and he started hopping around as well, tail wagging madly! He was being ever so careful to not step on her. They played like that for a good four or five minutes! Of course I'll never allow Skeet to play with her without a muzzle or very careful supervision, but boy the two of them seemed to have fun! Who ever would have figured that a greyhound and a ferret could be friends? :confused3 :goodvibes

I have an update. . .

We are fostering a new grey. His name is Lance, he is a big boy, fawn colored. He is kitty friendly and small animal friendly. We took him to his first GPA meet and greet yesterday, and I don't think we'll have him very long. A lot of people were quite impressed with him. Of course, a few people were interested in our Mickey as well, and he is definetely not up for adoption.

I haven't read the thread lately, so I don't know if it's been talked about the track in Kansas closing, but over 500 dogs will need fostering soon, so start hitting up your friends.

Here's a new update--Skeet has decided that his very favorite thing in the world is to go for a ride in the car. He stakes out the door to the garage, and if anyone is even remotely headed that way he runs over and stands there wagging his tail. He also wants to go for a ride in the neighbors cars--when I'm walking him and someone's got a car with a door open in the driveway he seems to think it's an invitation to go for a ride. The dog is OBSESSED with riding in the car!!

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I know Greyhound people. . .

We recently had a tragedy. We adopted our second grey in November, his name is Whytel Trouble. A beautiful white boy with blue brindle spots on his face and sides. We took him in because he had prostate and knee problems, and the kennel couldn't afford to keep sending him to the vet, so rather than having him put down, we took him in.

Things were good for the first month. He had one episode with his prostate, but the meds cleared it up within 24 hours. But his knee, which his vet said had "soft tissue damage" kept bothering him. We eventually took him to our vet, who immediatly diagnosed a massive osteo-sarcoma that had spread to his lungs. We had to put him down on January 4th.

We had him for only a short time, but we didn't love him any less.

One of the things that bothers me most is the attitude that his original vet took towards his healthcare. If you are going to take a lax approach at diagnosis, then get out of the business. Veteranary science isn't something you should do for the money. He didn't even take x-rays of his knee, which our vet said would definitely have shown signs of the cancer when Trouble was last seen in November by this other "vet".

On a high note, two of our favorite former fosters are over for the weekend (their furever family is in New England at the Pats game). And of course, we still have our original, Mickey.

Sorry for the downer, and for bumping an old thread.

Keep encouraging people to adopt the losers.

Fly free, Whytel.
I took a peek at the database and saw that Whytell's great grampy was the famed Dutch Bahama. Dutch was my Moon's grampa; maybe they're altogther now..running free and painless..at least I like to think they are.
Will someone inform the vet who'd made the misdiagnosis of his error? To be fair..(I s'pose) mistakes can happen.. but it shouldn't.
Gotta go hug my hound...they're all so special!

Linda

Godspeed to all the Greys at the bridge.....how sad for Whytel, yet his last days were surrounded by those that loved him, his breed and their passion for life.

We lost our Inky last June to Osteosarcoma. We decided against aggressive treatment, she was 9, and lost lots of weight with the 1st surgery. After the 2nd surgery, we just wanted her last days to be comfortable as possible. We didn't even biopsy her bone, as the Orthopedic said it would have required rebreaking her bone to get a sample. (by this time, they described that area of bone as brittle as a toothpick--the bone kept rebreaking after each plating) I guess I could have taken the leg, but after a lot of soul searching, I would rather her last days be as a natural as can be. And the amputation would have only bought 6 months max) So in the end, lots of pain meds, and lot and lots of loving. She was a amazing Grey, and won the hearts of everyone, even all the Vets. I remember the Orthopedic breaking down with tears on his cheeks when he told us the bad news.

Something about these dogs are amazing. Greys take hold of your soul, and when they leave you, they take a part of you. I love to think that a part of me is always with the Greys we have lost---who are waiting for us at the bridge. I guess when they have been through so much, and then they have someone who takes them in for a 2nd puppyhood, a 2nd chance of life, they reward you back for eternity.

A big hug to you tonight, and to all of us who have lost a part of our soul to our departed friends.

I'm so sorry to hear about Whytel. They really do get into your heart so quickly.

I took Skeet when I went to pick DS up from reenactment today, and I couldn't get five feet without someone asking if they could pet him and asking questions about him. Lots of the folks there said they were seriously considering getting a grey. :thumbsup2

He was fascinated by the cavalry area with the horses. I am afraid of horses so I didn't take him too close, but he would have gone right up to them to say hi if I had let him. (I also didn't want to spook the horses!)

Oh, and a funny story, he found a pork chop in the dirt. Some guy came up and was going to take it from him and I stopped the guy and strongly suggested that he'd lose his hand. (I'm pretty sure Skeet would bite a stranger trying to take food from him.) I said "Drop it" to Skeet, and he did. I was so proud--it's something we've done a lot of training with, and Skeet performed perfectly! The guy was amazed that he obeyed that command. :thumbsup2

Another update. . .

My wife is currently helping with turn-outs at the track adoption kennel right now, and is coming home with our new foster. . . Trouble's brother.

They are littermates, and look exactly the same, like mirror images.

We'll only be fostering Asset, but it'll be nice to have another face in the house.

Okay, I'll update as well. We lost our beautiful Chloe on Christmas day. She'd been diagnosed with bone cancer on 12/7 and on Christmas day she broke that leg. She was our first greyhound and we loved her very much. It become apparent really quickly that our house was way too quiet and we were going to need to adopt another. Rori came home yesterday! She's been such a good girl. After she toured her new yard and the house several times she immediately started playing with a squeaky toy. We couldn't believe it. She's wagging her tail, eating well, doesn't have diarrhea and slept all night on her bed. While DH ran out for takeout last night and I was reading the paper in the kitchen Rori went into our bedroom and laid down on her bed so she doesn't appear to be having any sort of separation anxiety at all. We've got our fingers crossed that she continues to do so well.
