This is really bothering me and it seemed to happen over night. I can't read anything small comfortably without reading glasses. I am a day before my 45th birthday so I knew it was coming but I hate it.

I bought a bunch of reading glasses and I have them stashed all over the house.

I wear contact lenses anyone have experience with the bi focal contact lenses?

I feel your pain. I am 47 and this started for me about 2.5 years ago. The real bummer for me is that, prior to this, I've had fabulous vision. My distance vision is still 20/20 so I don't wear contacts/glasses for anything else and my opthamologist said that, because of this, it is probably harder on me because I see well for distance yet up close my eyes have a worse time of trying to focus. It almost would have been better had I been somewhat nearsighted.

What gets me the most is not being able to see my food clearly when I'm eating. It's all kind of blurry so I often eat with my reading glasses on but then everything else is blurry. I mean, how am I going to see that fly in my food without my glasses?;)

I got a pair that I wear with my contacts. I didn't want to do the bifocal contact thing, so I went this route. So far it has worked pretty well, except when I can't find my glasses!!

This is me, too. I was nearly 45 when it started, but my distance vision is still great.

I now have readers (1.5) on a string around my neck at all times.

I've been wearing contacts since I was 16 for distance. Just a few months ago I noticed that when I read up close, it's a bit blurry. Great. So I went to the eye dr. and she prescribed bifocal contacts. I absolutely hated them. They didn't help at all and gave me horrible headaches. The real kicker is that I also purchased progressive lens glasses from this eye dr. and they didn't make a lick of difference either. Back I went and then she tells me that it's my astigmatism that's causing the problem. My advice, make sure they check you for an astigmatism BEFORE you purchase costly lenses. Good luck! :goodvibes

Forgot to add, she did say originally that you can wear your regular contacts and just pop reading glasses (+1) over them when you're reading up close.

I'm going to have to admit defeat and get a pair or reading glasses too. I've held off for a while now, but my arms won't be long enough soon.:lmao:

I'm not sure what problem I am having. I can read fine without glasses on. I have glasses for distance but I have trouble reading close up with the glasses on.

If your glasses are for distance, then it will make things a little blurry reading up close (like a book). I can't read with my distance glasses (or contacts) on.

Happy Birthday! Thats some present huh? Welcome to the club.

For anyone interested these are the BEST readers ever! I saw them on my doctor a few years ago and he swore by them and have seen them on so many people since. I have 2 pairs and love them! :thumbsup2

On our trip to Disney in January 2010, it seemed like overnight I needed readers. I don't need them for anything other tiny print (like directions on the back of an aspirin bottle). My distance vision is perfect....and everything else is other than really small print.

I'm 48 and wear contacts and my doctor has me doing mono-vision. One contact is set to normal correction for distance and the other eye is a bit under-corrected so I can still read. Sounds weird but your eyes get used to it quickly and it works great for me. I love not having to grab the reading glasses all the time.

The only time it bothers me is when I'm driving long distances at night---then it becomes a little hard to focus (so instead I just go ahead and switch to my regular glasses without the contacts if there's a lot of distance driving involved at night).

GL!

I am 50 and also have regular contacts set for mono vision. I can read everything without reading glasses except for the fine print on medicine bottles. My DH got Lasik years ago and cannot read anything without reading glasses.

If you want to read in bed at night buy cheap glasses on the internet and order them for under correction. For example, lets say you need reading glasses that are +2 and your eyeglass prescription is -5.5 left eye and -6.5 right eye.
You would order -3.5 left eye and -4.5 right eye. Worked for me.

A woman I golfed with last year had these-they are so cool.

I don't need them yet but DH just got bifocals. He is having a heck of a time getting used to them. It's been about 5 weeks now and he is just getting the hang of them.

A friend tried the bifocal contacts and he said they made him sick to his stomach because of the delay time for moving from close to far away stuff with the contacts floating in his eye. He went back to classes. They are worth a try though.

I do and they are not the best solution but they work for me. You sacrifice a little on both ends of the spectrum (distance and reading). I can read just about everything except really fine print; however, I cannot read street signs as well as I would like to - I have to be a lot closer, like "turn here NOW" closer.

So I stashed reading glasses all over the house. I hope I get used to wearing them. My DBF has eye surgery 2 years ago it cleared his vision except he needed reading glasses. I would tease him, that is what I get for being snarky. Now I am in the same boat.

I guess I just have to get used to it!
