GRAND OPENING - GRAND CLOSING (Florida)

I wonder what would be the tipping point to roll back phases again. Isn’t part of the federal guidelines for reopening that cases go down between phases? This seems quite the opposite....
I don't know the answer to this, but I think the only real thing we can do is slow anything further (if there is anything left) and mandate masks. A second lockdown, even if deemed necessary, will be a hard sell to the American public. I just don't see a lot of compliance with it a second time.

Quite likely!

But you make it sound so simple with regards to the testing of 7000 dorm residents at your DD‘s university. And for those who test positive and would need to isolate for two weeks, who monitors and enforces that? Suppose one person tests positive and their roommate tests negative? What happens then? Sounds like it COULD be a logistical nightmare for the university.

Hopefully things will work out ...
And. all those kids are walking around in public infecting and making sick how many others. And the infection rates and deaths go on and on and on....

People didn't comply the first time.

People didn't comply the first time.
They did where I live and our numbers reflect that. However I know people were getting impatient by the end and there is no way the majority would do another round. Thankfully masks are required here, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed that it continues to be that way - and that people actually continue to listen. That's actually my greatest worry right now - the amount of debate I'm seeing on social media about the validity of masks from my own area.

Desantis has made it very clear that Florida will not be closing again so there will be no tipping point..

Too many new cases popping up in my own community in the last several weeks. ( sw fla) Thankfully only one passing. I’m not feeling too confident that more people aren’t going to get sick. I’m noticing less mask wearers which is also disappointing.

Most are wearing masks up here in MA, and we have a great declining trend, but over in NH, no one is wearing masks except for employees it seems. Hoping FL survives the summer season, with hurricane season on the way. Good luck!

I am in Western Mass (near Amherst) and masks are definitely being worn by folks pretty consistently. I have not had occasion to go to NH since Covid, but it does not surprise me that less folks are wearing them.there.. I just wish more folks in some of the other states and areas would be less resistant to wearing masks and practicing distancing.

I noticed that Stoneybrook (State college on Long Island), wait-listed a large amount of students that I think in years past would have made school right away( SATs 1250 sat and 3.8). I heard so many kids around this level got wait listed. I feel that they were figuring that with job losses and covid not under control families were going to opt to keep children closer so they were going to get more people taking aceptances. Think thios is gonna hurt soome schools for a couple of years. The NY State scools didn't send acceptances till well after COVID started.

Apparently, many college athletes and affiliated staff from power conferences have been testing positive. Clemson, in particular. What are they doing there? Purposely sharing water bottles?
Does not bode well for the school year beginning in Fall.
The Big Ten FB fan in me thinks the Clemson football team had an old fashioned chicken pox party to get Covid out of the way this summer.

30 LSU players have tested positive. Found that out yesterday.

Data used to meet federal guidelines to reopen was not valid in Florida. I hold no hope that our Gov values anything except his presidential bid in 2024 and kissing up to the current occupant.
The federal guidelines for phased re-opening are almost impossible to meet. States may enter Phase I , but never get to Phase II. So how long do we keep everything closed ? Until we have a vaccine?

He has said that, but if they get to the point where NYC and NJ were of freezer trailers as overflow morgues in hospital parking lots, retirement homes with bodies hidden away, and cardiac deaths tripling he might change.

Thats what’s so hard to predict and plan for with this pandemic. Once it exponentially takes off all bets are off.

We wouldn't have to wait for a vaccine if people would follow the guidelines by wearing masks and keeping their distance.
I think masks and distance would improve the situation, but it seems it's only going to happen if the population gets really scared.
Masks are required in the greater Phoenix area. But I was in the grocery store yesterday and I would guesstimate 30 % of their patrons weren't wearing masks. It's pretty discouraging. Unless stores are willing to post guards at their entrances, it's just not going to happen.

That's crazy. Masks are required in NY and over 99% of customers wear them. I've seen customers enter without a mask to be told they have to wear a mask.

That's pretty standard here in San Diego - no mask - no service. Said more politely in SoCal style of course.. ;)

I was just reading an article that California has an order that fines people who don't wear masks.

I posted on another virus thread that no one wears them here in my area of Louisiana. I heard the same from my in-laws who live in the western part of the state. People actually stare at me like I am insane when I go out in one. It's a "political statement" here.

Yes, but you are in NY,where most people know someone who had the virus. Here, it's not as up close and personal. I am very disappointed, because I think this is a runaway freight train.
