Goofy Support Group (AKA Goofy Challenge 2010)

It's a good idea but I am thinking that by the time we get to the marathon we are set in our sock choices. I have a 10 year supply of Asics Keyano socks that were discontinued a couple years ago. I would not trade them for anything.....but will be in the market once I open the last pair. really a better time for this is at the begnining of the training cycle when folks are unsure of what they want, need or like.

I am thinking that it would be a quicker and much appreciated time to donate your stash as well as the three old pair of running shoes hidden deep in the closet to the running store before Christmas.

Good idea, though.

Got in 6.25 miles tonight on the treadmill. Which time alone is a miracle since I am only technically suppose to have it for a 1/2 hour. So after 2 miles it's questionable if i will have to give up my treadmill. Luckily never became an issue tonight. The later into the evening the better the chance I'll be able to keep it.

So I got in the miles. the 1st 1.5 miles were nasty. Thoughts of quitting dancing in my head. I even thought about trying a different TM as I was having an unusual pain. It finally went away but I don't think I'll be using that TM again, it's like it's cursed  When I finally got to running after 1.5 it was in my normal pace. But the walk breaks early on and a 2 minute walk bread to suck down some powerade/water really screwed with my overall pace. Oh it's still ok but it's funny how these days it is now a disappointing pace to me :lmao: DH is like "That's a great pace!" and I was all "It sucked! don't look at me"

Sincerely,

Grouchy (but secretly happy that I did get the miles in and am close to non-stop running 6 on a TM :cloud9: )

p.s. The nerves kicked in big time this week. Mom is rumored to have tossed in a puke bags for the flight :lmao: Her text messages were along the line of coaxing someone off the edge :lmao: Oh I'm on the edge! At least tonight my stomach isn't knotted.

Lily: Thanks for encouraging me to join the group. I am enjoying all of the great information and dialog from people! :happytv:

Diane: Glad to know that someone else in Michigan is struggling with the weather. Although, I know there are many others with the same complaints in other states! I just keep telling myself, "a week and a half, then taper" :cheer2:

Today a winter storm is brewing, so I went on the TM for the 2nd time in my training. I hate it because I run slower on the TM than I do outside. But, I just played with the incline and went faster and slower to keep from getting bored. :)

Tomorrow's weather isn't looking good: snow, wind and cold temps. I guess I'll push off my 8 mile run until Thursday and try to cross-train tomorrow.

Enjoy the evening - what's left of it!
Shelly

Diane,

Nice job doing over 6 miles on the treadmill....more than I could handle. Hopefully the week-end will bring some sunshine so we can get back outside!

Shelly, glad you're enjoying us.

I got outside with a Kirby dog walk just before the big rains and winds really hit, just a little wet at the end. I did pilates this a.m. and will bike tonight. I was feeling a bit more sore yesterday than today so I guess it's all good. I don't care for that sore feeling at this stage after my half though. Not worrying. It is what it is and I'm doing whatever I am able as I go along the schedule. I'm so on the edge about the call to the doc for the epidural though. I want to, then I dont repeat ad nauseum.

Windy here now.

Hi Lily,

You and I were on the same page about getting out before the wind, rain and cold set in. I was headed out this morning to do errands and changed my mind because I knew the nasty weather were coming. I got in 8 miles when it was just under 40 degrees and minimal wind! Yea!!!!

I hope your injury heals before you have to see the doc. Take it easy. I would hate to see it get worse at this stage of the game.

I am looking for input on modifying my training schedule to fit my holiday schedule!!

I just did an 18 miler on Sunday. I pushed a bit the last 2-3 miles. Other than being very tired that day, my recovery was good. On Monday I did not even feel like I had done 18 miles the day before. I did an hour on the elliptical Monday then Tuesday I did a hill workout on my treadmill for about an hour, followed by an extra couple miles at a brisk pace. Yesterday was 30 mins with the trainer, but rested from cardio. I am sure I will be on the TM at least 2 of the next 3 days.

That brings me to Sunday. My training schedule has me pulling back to 10 miles, then the following Sunday 20 miles then tapering the next 2 weeks to 8 then 6. What I am contemplating is getting the 20 miles out of the way this Sunday and doing the 10, 8, 6 the following 3 Sundays. Does that seem like it would be a major problem? Is it too soon after the 18?

Thanks for any input.

Honestly, I think it is too soon but also too long of a taper. Would you end up part of the walking wounded if you do run 20 this weekend then follow your schedule; probably not, but the risks increase. If you had mentioned that you were really fatigued, had lingering aches or some other issue that an extra week of taper would help heal, I would be all over the three weekend (four week) taper. Besides, do you really want an extra week of taper madness?

Just my thoughts.

Christine - how about if you pull back milage this week and then next weekend do the 20 miler and then 10 and 8 the next 2 weekends - or 8 and 6. I am not an expert and only have one marathon under my belt but I figured it was a suggestion.

Thanks for your input!! I guess I am really trying to avoid 20 miles on Dec 20. Not really a reason I can't do it at this point. I have to pack up to head to NY sometime that week--wrap presents etc, etc. Also, we may leave for NY as early as Monday 12/21. It will be a 700 miles drive that we will likely do in one day. That many hours in a car so soon after putting 20 miles on my legs has me a bit concerned.

Oh, and I was counting on holiday madness to help with the taper madness!!

I don't know how all you folks run in the cold. Getting out the door must be tough. Vegas was probably low 40's during the race and I had on long pants, long sleeve shirt, 2 running jackets, stocking cap and gloves - the entire race. The only reason I unzipped the one jacket was so they could see my bib number at the finish!

You probably wait around for it to warm up while I have to get up at 5:00 am just to get out before it gets too hot.

Also not sure how you do the treadmill either. Out of necessity I guess. I can manage 3 miles tops. I even have a nice treadmill in front of a TV with a DVD player. I once did 5 miles on a cruise ship treadmill and thought I was going to die! My last boss did his 20 mile run on the treadmill. YOW!

I did 5 last night, the first since this weekends half and about died. The humidity was 100%. I was in very low humidity for the last 2 weeks so it was a shock to the system.

With all the traveling, my schedule is all mixed up. I will do 19 this weekend, then skip next weekend because I will be in Wisconsin. So I will do my last 20 mile run on Thursday, December 23.

getting close.....

Always remember we are all an experiment of one.

I would not suggest riding 700 miles the day after a long run...... I kind of sensed that an event was the problem. I am thinking late in the week (17th, 18th or 19th) is also not an option. I am going to reverse myself a bit and say run the 20 this weekend BUT DO NOT run tomorrow or Monday/Tues. Lets give you a little break due to the back to back long runs. (I am also guessing your plan has been lng, pull back, long pull back long...)

Lets keep the weekday work strong other than the off days I suggested. Really step it up to keep the cardio system challenged. We can tlk further but I am also thinking I wouls make your 27th run in the low teens. It kind of kills some of the taper but puts you back in the long run frame of mind. So...17-20 this weekend; 10 before the epic trip to the great white north; 13-15 just after Christmas (I actually run Cristmas morning but am an empty nester so I do not have to be ready for the kiddos to get up) and 6-8 the first weekend of January

Please do pay attention to the body and do not push any of the out of schedule runs. It's late and I want another healthy and happy WISHer on the line.

Here's to wishing I see you in long pants and running jacket in January!!!!

We are DUE.

We have a 30 day forecast that is not real specific but does outline trends.... Cooler than normal the weekend of January 10. Wet coming into the weekend. I like half this but not the other.:scared1:

Be careful changing climates my friend. You may want to find a light scarf to help warm some of the air as you breath in. Also, if cold and windy run into the wind FIRST then return with the wind.

Got 8 miles in today on the Treadmill. It feels like 0 with the wind chill and wind is brudal. My legs don't feel great now, but I had an incline of 1.5-2 so I'm hoping that's it. I know that's not much.

I took off my Tuesday run as my legs were so sore (I had done 8 thurs - 20 Friday and then 5 on Sunday.) I don't know what's going on really.

12 on tap for tomorrow. We are so close.

I did my longest "run" today. 34 miles in 3:04. It was cold and wet, I had to wear a coat!!!!!
I wanted to keep going, but my Dh didn't.:sad2:

I was talking to one of the rangers on the trail, and I said that I know that we can't, but I wish that my DH could drive the car up the trail behind me as a support vehicle as I want to do the whole trail and he doesn't.

He gave us a phone number to call and told us that we could use there buggie!!!! :woohoo:
My Dh will be able to drive behind me, and if I need it give me a tow......the trail is 80 miles!!!!:scared1:

If it all works out I would like to do it every couple of weeks!:thumbsup2

That is a great suggestion Charles. As soon as I finished I couldn't stop coughing (along with others) All day long I had a terrible deep cough. Finally subsided by the next day.

Ok so 24 hours later I'm getting around to posting my Tuesday workout and where is that sleepy smiley when I need it, probably snoozing.

Today was a rest day, debated on going to the gym again today but decided to give my legs a rest. Afterall, I'm kinda knew to the 'running' 3 days in a row. The weekend long miles (last and coming) are not working out. At least my running on the treadmill has taken off. If Sunday warms up a bit I will probably try for another outdoor run or it will be a rest day. So Friday and Saturday will be back on the TM. Which means 6 to 7 each if i am lucky.

Yup 7! I hit 7 miles running last night. Avg pace 13:04. And I'm becoming attached to my treadmill who we will call George. The 7th mile was actually  easier mentally. Oh sure I was starting the gasping but I just focused on counting down each 1/4 mile and it dawned on me. If it wasn't for the gym closing around me I probably could have done..... :scared1: 8. Who is this person? Not sure yet but I do like her legs :lmao: Oh and she forgot her water bottle in the car. So at Mile 3 she said "don't change the channel" paused the machine and continued to jog to the drinking fountain and back again. Weird. New goal.... RUN the Wine and Dine Half.

Remember do not expect this pace on Jan 9 or 10th. Just hoping to finish. That's the plan and goal. Anything else is gravy for me :thumbsup2

Friday = 8 miles on the treadmill. 105 minutes and at a 13:03 avg pace. I have conquered drinking and running :lmao: Did not stop for a second. Got on that dreadmill and didn't stop running till I hit 8 miles. So sipped from my small 10 oz Nathan (anything larger and I probably would have made a mess!). Oh I was so good I text messaged DH at mile 7.5 to tell him to hurry up because I was starving and sick of running :rotfl: At 7.75 DH called me and I answered and talked for a bit. Which since there was only 4 of us at the gym this afternoon sparked comment from one lady who yelled across the gym at me "Nice Going Diane, make us all look bad running and talking on the phone over there" Gave us all a good laugh out loud moment :lmao:

I've had a few great ladies talk to me while I've been running this week and lighten my mood as I drudge along. I love my gym! It's small enough that even if we don't know everyone by name you know almost everyone's face and smile and nod a lot.

Going to try for a bit of the dreamill and then try to head outside to see how far I can get to Mile 18 or 20. fingers crossed. I'll have a bit of a break but it's better than nothing and I really want another 18 but really really want a 20.

Good luck this weekend on getting those miles in! I know for me the weather isn't playing nice so I hope it plays nicer for all of you! :cheer2:

editted to add I was sooo excited about the distance that....

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/...WJf&emid=sharshar&linkid=link5&cid=EMsharshar

NEVER thought I'd see THAT # on my treadmill. That 5:23 is actually 105:23. I sadly missed the time turn. Sniff sniff. I looked down and it said 00:15 as in 15 seconds and I freaked till I realized the display couldn't show 100+ minutes.

Same post different day.

I sure do like the idea of a cooler trend for event weekend. Not the remainder of the week of course.

Well I got my 12 miles in yesterday on the treadmill. Just too cold to be outside and I really hate that treadmill.

Good luck on your runs this weekend everyone!
