Hi!

Here's my introduction to the journal that I'll really be starting on Monday, January 11th, 2010. But I wanted to begin this while I have a few minutes to sit and put some info / feelings / goals down in black and white.

Personal:
My name is Laurie. I'm 45 years old (46 in march) and have been overweight for the last 25 years. I am a daycare provider from upstate NY. I'm married to a wonderful man and have 2 grown children. Our son is 24 and our daughter is 22. I also have a beautiful daughter-in-law. My dh and dd are both very athletic and have never been overweight a day in their lives. My ds, though he loves sports, never really participated in them and has poor eating habits. He's has been overweight for years as has my ddil. She was 'a big girl' in HS when we first got to know her, but since her dad passed away a few years ago, she's gained quite a bit of weight. Their doctor has spoken to both of them about losing weight and the health benefits that they would see. My ds plans to start his weight loss journey with me, but my ddil isn't at the point where she's going to do it yet. Maybe someday. My dh and dd are very supportive. My dd lives approx 2 hours away, but when she's home, she loves to go to the gym with me. My dh loves the time that we spend together at the gym. It's 'our' time even if we dont do everything together.

Physical:

I have lost some weight a few times, but for the most part I sit between 190-200 lbs almost all of the time. During the summer of 2007 I lost 40 lbs, getting me down to 160ish, but have since slowly gained weight back again. I have a gym membership at Golds Gym and until this passed summer, I went faithfully, approx 4 times per week. It's only been since summer that I gained the last 20lbs or so.Now I'm back to around 190. After returning from wdw at the beginning of Sept, I was very sick with 2 lung infections. From Sept - Nov I fought these illnesses that began with an asthma attack, and that really did me in. Exercise wasn't something that I could handle until I felt better. For me, if I get into the habit of staying home and not going to the gym, it's difficult for me to go back. So even though I started feeling better around Thanksgiving, I still haven't been back to working out. THAT is going to change!

Plan:
Golds Gym has a 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge that they put on every year. It starts Monday, Jan 11th. They weigh, measure and take pictures of each participant. I will start my journey on that day!!!! My goal is to do my best and use those 12 weeks to get myself back into a healthy lifestyle. If I could possibly win the challenge... that would be a plus! I'd like to average a 2 lb weight loss per week and also be at the gym 5 days each week. The only week that is going to be rough will be Feb break when my dd and I are in Disney. We have the food plan, but I know that if I'm conscious of the food that I take in, I can hopefully maintain during that week and come back ready to step right back into the challenge. My ds is also going to participate in the 12 week challenge, but he knows that he will not be able to participate as much as he would like due to the fact that he will be student teaching this semester. It will be a good challenge for him even if he only gets there a few times per week and watches what he eats a little more closely.

Journaling :
This will be my food and exercise journal. I'm hoping for some followers to help support me on my way to the return of a healthy lifestyle, but even if no one follows me here, it will be a great place to put things in writing and see what works and what doesn't for me.

Food Intake:
When I lost 40lbs before, there are certain changes that I made that I know for a fact worked beautifully for me. At that time I was working with a dietician, but I'm going to go back and read old emails btwn us to remind myself of her words. My biggest issue is eating small amounts thruout the day. I tend to skip breakfast, eat whatever the daycare kids have left over for lunch, and have a late dinner after our evening activities. Usually 9pm or later. All of those things need to stop. Starting the 11th I'll concentrate on

1) Eating small meals thruout the day.
2) Always eat breakfast.
3) Eat 'supper' before going to the gym in the evening.
4) Have a small snack (with protein) after working out.
5) Stock up on protein bars / shakes.

New Stuff!
This Christmas my family really helped me by buying me new gym 'stuff', and I continued by shopping for other items that I wanted with some gift cards that i received. Within the last few weeks I have gotten a new yoga mat and carrying sleeve, 5 new workout shirts, a new gym bag, the nike+ system, a new robe for the gym and warm clothes to come home in after my shower, new sports bras, and new workout socks. I have made a workout playlist for iphone and have downloaded the list of classes/times from golds. I have also contacted a trainer who I adore and she is going to be helping me to keep on track. She also runs a once a week walking / trotting / jogging / running group that I am starting to work with next Saturday. This morning I looked up a list of 5ks in our area and plan to participate in my first one on Sunday June 5th!

That's everything! Hope you can join me on this journey and please know that any help / encouragement / suggestions are welcome!!!

Ok.... having written all of this... I want to make one change. I'm going to start back at the gym a few times this week just to get my body moving. I know that I can't do anything too strenuous anyway at this point, so what will it hurt to go a few times and then really start the CHALLENGE on the 11th??

Welcome! Sounds like you have a great plan in place, especially with the structure of the gym program. I find that structure helps me too...at the moment I am doing the Wii Sports Active 30 Day Challenge, and I also have a gym membership but I will be mainly using it for the pool.

It's great that you already know what works for you diet-wise too. With a journal for support and accountability you have everything you need for success. :thumbsup2

Wow! I think you've got everything covered. It's great that you have that 12 week challenge right at your gym. I wouldn't be surprised at all if you win, especially with all the planning you've done. Best of luck!

Thank you both for joining me and for the encouragement! I'm very excited to get started. The challenge at the gym is a great way to get people motivated! :cool1:

I'm READY!

So... I went to the gym last night and I decided to tweak my plan a little bit.

I decided to take this week to "wake up my muscles" before started the challenge next week. So last night when I was at Gold's, I starting talking to one of the trainers about the challenge and told her that I was ready to fill out the papers and sign up to be weighed and measured. My son is going to be doing the challenge with me, so I was going to sign us both us. She said that I needed to pay $54 each to sign up for the appt and wouldn't you know it, I had not brought my purse with me to the gym. It was so funny too, because I always remember my purse! Anyway, I decided I'd come back today and sign both myself and my son up for an appt on Monday. It's funny tho... do you know how sometimes you just know that something happened for a reason? Well... I think I was suppose to forget my purse. If I had brought it, I would have paid the 108 and been starting the challenge on Monday.

As I was working out, I started thinking about the person that I talked about earlier, who used to be a trainer and now only instructs a few classes at the gym, but I had heard that she was getting ready to start her own fitness center. I had sent her a message on Facebook over the weekend, but hadn't heard back from her yet. So when I left the gym last night, I called her. I told her that I was planning to do the challenge, but something inside was telling me talk to her about it first. I was wondering if she was going to have anything like this when she started her own place and wanted to know where she was at in that process. As we talked, I got more and more convinced that I was meant to do this journey with her and that more importantly, she's meant to meet my son and help him along his journey. She's SUCH an inspiration! I just know in my heart that she's the person we both need! I'm sure I'll talk about her a lot throughout this journal. After talking to her (and then my son, and then her again)... the whole plan has changed!

New plan:
Crystal is going to weigh and measure both Matt and myself at her house on Saturday. Instead of doing a "challenge" we're going to have scheduled weigh ins with her. I know that it doesn't sound as "challenging" for lack of a better word, but I know in my heart that weighing in with her will give me plenty of motivation to try my best each week. I think that both the challenge and working with Crystal have their advantages and disadvantages, but I feel in my heart that I have made the right choice. This is the road I was meant to take. If not, there will always be another challenge for me to get into!! :-)
Crystal currently teaches 3 classes at Golds. A kickboxing class that I can't make it to, a boxing class, and a spin class. I'm not going to take the boxing class for a few weeks, but I'll be in the spin class every week. She also has a group of women who walk/run together every Saturday morning. They started 8 months ago and have since walked/jogged/ran in six 5ks. I'm going to start working with this group next week. I can't wait! I feel that by working my plan this way, I'll have more support than just doing the challenge at the gym. The group of women who walk on Saturday, all belong to the gym. They all seem wonderful and supportive. That will help. Seeing Crystal and having the ability to call or email her will be a HUGE help to me also. I'll also be walking on Saturday's with my oldest and dearest friends. She just started with the group last Saturday and is very motivated to continue. She doesn't have any weight issues but has been working very hard since the beginning of the summer to get into the best shape of her life. She's definitely managing to do that. I'm so proud of her!

So that's it! The plan is tweaked... but I still have a plan! That's most important! And Matt and I are happy and comfortable with the decision we made. Also very important! So I'm going to walk a few more times, get weighed at noon on Sat and I AM OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1:

Well... tonight was my last night of food freedom!! I weigh in for the first time tomorrow!!! I'm sorta - kinda looking forward to weighing in! :rotfl: I had one of my favorite fatty meals tonight. Velvetta Mac and Cheese!! :rolleyes1

Tomorrow everything starts clean. I weigh in at noon and then....... healthy eating here I come!!! :woohoo:

LOL, sounds like you had a good "last meal"!

Good luck...you're got a very sound plan in place.

Ok... I finally began!!! :cool1: To make a very long story short, I ended up getting into the Golds Challenge after all. Crystal is very busy right now starting her new venture and she doesn't have much time. I'm going to be working with her in classes and she's always only a phonecall away, but I was weighed and measured by the gym. So here I go!!

My orientation was last night and my starting weight was taken. I don't remember all of the measurements, but I'm asking for a copy of them so that I can have them and put them into this journal. My weight was 194 and my fat percentage was somewhere around 39.4%. That scared me more than the weight! So things are changing from here on out!! I have 5 weeks before going to Disney so I need to do the best that I can because I know what it's like when I'm there!! The dining plan is a killer on the diet! But it's SO GOOD!! ;)

Last night I did my first spinning class in 4 months and let me tell you... my legs were weak!! :scared1: Wow! The difference is amazing! After spinning I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I'm going to walk this week and start the c25k program next week. I'm hoping I start to feel a tiny bit stronger by then!!

I know that I have a long way to go... but taking this first step was crucial! I'm glad I did it!

Woo hoo, good luck in the challenge! Those measurements will give you a starting point so you can celebrate your success.

You're a brave soul to tackle spinning. That's a heck of a good calorie burner. And then the treadmill too? Whew! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the good luck!! I'm going to need it! :rotfl2:

Spinning is my favorite class at the gym. I enjoy the fact that sometimes I can just close my eyes and feel like I'm the only one in the room. I just love it!

Banana
Apple
2 eggs
2 slices diet bread

No exercise today. I worked until 5, left for my husband's basketball game (he coaches a HS team). Watched the game from 6-8, grocery shopped in two different stores, carried it all in, cleaned out the freezer and fridge and put everything away. I didn't sit down until 1030pm. Busy night. I'll be at the gym tomorrow night. Tonight it just seemed to be more important get some healthy foods in the house. I threw away anything bad. Candy, ice cream, etc. I bought fruits, veggies, salad stuff, all new diet dressings, crystal light (I'm also cutting way down on diet soda), fish, chicken, tuna, soy milk, yogurt, protein bars, fiber cereal, frozen veggies, whole grain pitas, and lean cuisine frozen meals (I know that they are high in salt, but with my busy schedule, they work for me sometimes). I needed to do this shopping so badly! I feel better now knowing that there's wonderful, fresh, healthy, low cal foods in the house again!!! :cool1:

Best of luck!

Thank you! I am actually having a lean cuisine meal today for lunch and am interested to see how it fits in with my sodium intake and if it has any affect on me. It's great to know that others have been able to fit them in sometimes. Frozen dinners are just so convenient and really work for me once in a while.

I will say, I woke up this morning with a headache and realized that I did the other morning too after working out the night before. I don't think that it's related to dehydration. I am really well hydrated!!!! I wonder what else it might be. So I'm wanting to keep an eye on that to see if it continues.

TGIF!!!

Yesterday was a rough day for me. I just didn't feel 'good' during the day. I was tired and hungry. If this continues to happen, I'm going to have to look at what I'm doing/eating to see if there's a commonality.
