Hi!
Here's my introduction to the journal that I'll really be starting on Monday, January 11th, 2010. But I wanted to begin this while I have a few minutes to sit and put some info / feelings / goals down in black and white.
Personal:
My name is Laurie. I'm 45 years old (46 in march) and have been overweight for the last 25 years. I am a daycare provider from upstate NY. I'm married to a wonderful man and have 2 grown children. Our son is 24 and our daughter is 22. I also have a beautiful daughter-in-law. My dh and dd are both very athletic and have never been overweight a day in their lives. My ds, though he loves sports, never really participated in them and has poor eating habits. He's has been overweight for years as has my ddil. She was 'a big girl' in HS when we first got to know her, but since her dad passed away a few years ago, she's gained quite a bit of weight. Their doctor has spoken to both of them about losing weight and the health benefits that they would see. My ds plans to start his weight loss journey with me, but my ddil isn't at the point where she's going to do it yet. Maybe someday. My dh and dd are very supportive. My dd lives approx 2 hours away, but when she's home, she loves to go to the gym with me. My dh loves the time that we spend together at the gym. It's 'our' time even if we dont do everything together.
Physical:
I have lost some weight a few times, but for the most part I sit between 190-200 lbs almost all of the time. During the summer of 2007 I lost 40 lbs, getting me down to 160ish, but have since slowly gained weight back again. I have a gym membership at Golds Gym and until this passed summer, I went faithfully, approx 4 times per week. It's only been since summer that I gained the last 20lbs or so.Now I'm back to around 190. After returning from wdw at the beginning of Sept, I was very sick with 2 lung infections. From Sept - Nov I fought these illnesses that began with an asthma attack, and that really did me in. Exercise wasn't something that I could handle until I felt better. For me, if I get into the habit of staying home and not going to the gym, it's difficult for me to go back. So even though I started feeling better around Thanksgiving, I still haven't been back to working out. THAT is going to change!
Plan:
Golds Gym has a 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge that they put on every year. It starts Monday, Jan 11th. They weigh, measure and take pictures of each participant. I will start my journey on that day!!!! My goal is to do my best and use those 12 weeks to get myself back into a healthy lifestyle. If I could possibly win the challenge... that would be a plus! I'd like to average a 2 lb weight loss per week and also be at the gym 5 days each week. The only week that is going to be rough will be Feb break when my dd and I are in Disney. We have the food plan, but I know that if I'm conscious of the food that I take in, I can hopefully maintain during that week and come back ready to step right back into the challenge. My ds is also going to participate in the 12 week challenge, but he knows that he will not be able to participate as much as he would like due to the fact that he will be student teaching this semester. It will be a good challenge for him even if he only gets there a few times per week and watches what he eats a little more closely.
Journaling :
This will be my food and exercise journal. I'm hoping for some followers to help support me on my way to the return of a healthy lifestyle, but even if no one follows me here, it will be a great place to put things in writing and see what works and what doesn't for me.
Food Intake:
When I lost 40lbs before, there are certain changes that I made that I know for a fact worked beautifully for me. At that time I was working with a dietician, but I'm going to go back and read old emails btwn us to remind myself of her words. My biggest issue is eating small amounts thruout the day. I tend to skip breakfast, eat whatever the daycare kids have left over for lunch, and have a late dinner after our evening activities. Usually 9pm or later. All of those things need to stop. Starting the 11th I'll concentrate on
1) Eating small meals thruout the day.
2) Always eat breakfast.
3) Eat 'supper' before going to the gym in the evening.
4) Have a small snack (with protein) after working out.
5) Stock up on protein bars / shakes.
New Stuff!
This Christmas my family really helped me by buying me new gym 'stuff', and I continued by shopping for other items that I wanted with some gift cards that i received. Within the last few weeks I have gotten a new yoga mat and carrying sleeve, 5 new workout shirts, a new gym bag, the nike+ system, a new robe for the gym and warm clothes to come home in after my shower, new sports bras, and new workout socks. I have made a workout playlist for iphone and have downloaded the list of classes/times from golds. I have also contacted a trainer who I adore and she is going to be helping me to keep on track. She also runs a once a week walking / trotting / jogging / running group that I am starting to work with next Saturday. This morning I looked up a list of 5ks in our area and plan to participate in my first one on Sunday June 5th!
That's everything! Hope you can join me on this journey and please know that any help / encouragement / suggestions are welcome!!!
Ok.... having written all of this... I want to make one change. I'm going to start back at the gym a few times this week just to get my body moving. I know that I can't do anything too strenuous anyway at this point, so what will it hurt to go a few times and then really start the CHALLENGE on the 11th??
