GMAC - harassing calls - a little scary

>>> ... only have one credit card ...
You may need another. Should you be on vacation and some fourth party steals information from some third party then your credit card company might cancel your card suddenly and you have no credit card to finish your vacation with.

If we ever took a vacation w/ a cc we would have our debit card to fall back on. We usually use cash and the debit card when we go on vaction though.

Something similar happened to my 13 yo son when he first got his phone (verizon). They recycle phone #s and he kept getting phone calls from India and Los Angeles from men who didn't speak english! We asked verizon to block the phone #s coming in and they said they couldn't so we ended up changing his actual cell #... what a pain.

Hopefully, that doesn't happen. DS13 just got his phone so we'll see what kinds of calls he gets. I've had my number for several years, so I'm not sure why I got a call about my warranty.:confused3

I called AT&T about this several months ago (someone had the wrong number and was texting my husband 15+ times/day, at all times) -- there's some kind of parent monitoring that can block numbers, but they charge $4.95 per month for the privilege. Everytime I call AT&T it seems they can help me for an additional fee.....:sad2:

I have our cell phone numbers registered on the Do Not Call registry just in case they get released to telemarketers.

Where do I find the number for the do not call registry. I am sure our cell phone numbers are not listed.:confused3

FTR --- when you make your mortgage payment after the first of the month (I'll say first because 99% of mortgages are due then), even though it's before the 15th "grace period" where they don't charge you a late fee---they can still report your payment as late on your credit.

Companies used to always describe that as a "grace period" when in fact, it is not at all and just the time between when you should have made your payment and before they charge you. Just be careful (I'm a title agent and making sure we don't say this when closing on homes has been beaten into me).

Yesterday I received a phone call on my cell phone from somewhere indicating that I needed to call them before the warranty on my vehicle expires. Well, the warranty has already expired and I never have given my cell phone out to anyone other than a few friends. So I just hung up.

Are these people starting to contact people on their cell phones - it's bad enough getting all those calls on the home phone.

My only concern is that my ds13 has a prepaid cell phone and I would not be happy to have his minutes used up because of phone calls from solicitors or whatever they are.

:confused3 Do you know if it is possible to block a particular number on a cell phone?:confused3

We have an unlisted number and we are on the do not call list. This company was callling my house 3x a day. I finally got one person to give me a name and phone number and reported them to the state. However, I used another trick and I have not received a call in over a week now. I pushed 1 to talk to the real person and when they came on the phone I stated, " This call is being recorded. You have called a number on the do not call list and this information is being sent to the state's attorney general." After months of these calls they have stopped!

:rotfl2: I will DEFINITELY try this!

You "just" got this call yesterday?:rotfl:

I get this call 6 times a week on my cell phone, home phone and work phone!

So aggravating!

Did I miss something? Did they threaten foreclosure or was it just one of the options? There's a big difference! It does not sound to me like they "threatened" you, you just got the phone options! It's a mortgage company... in this day and time that's an option.

Yes, they should have told you WHO was calling, but they didn't threaten you with foreclosure!
.
The OP was right to be suspicious-you have to be very careful with giving out any personal info these days. This includes SS #, bank account numbers etc.

Jeez, you didn't have to jump all over the OP...unless you're a telemarketer for one of these places.;)

DH and I have both had this one a few times lately.

I don't think that's true. I'm pretty certain it's 30 days past due before they can legally report it to the CRA's.

I have gotten two of these calls in the last two weeks - comes up on caller ID as "International" and says this is the final call regarding my 'overdue' credit card account. They do not identify themselves and just say to press #1 for more info. I know I have NO overdue accounts - so I have just been hanging up - BEWARE - scams are definitely running rampant with so many people running behind - it's scary what info these people can get - they are just shooting blind and hoping someone will give them info.

We've been getting the same kind of call for months now. I finally got fed up and started pressing 1 to get a live person. I ask for them to take us off their list and they hang up. The guy I talked to today said I need to press 2 when prompted to press 1 and it'll take me off the list. Somehow I doubt it though.

Well, I received the "call of death" on myt cell the other, 999-999-9999! I ignored it, no message, then I started reading that some places are using that to avoid using their real number. I have also received some weird 800 numbers lately, when you call them back they say the number does not exist. Also, DD13, DH and I have all received texts saying that our credit union account has been compromised, yada yada yada. Guess what, no such account. It got DH all upset till I told him that we we don't have that account and it's a scam. What bothers me is even though we have unlimited text, what about the people that don't.

We do not have unlimited text but we do not pay for receiving a text only if we were to send one. It would cost us 20 cents to send a text message.

The grace period is only so that you do not incurre late charges and fees. They can in fact report it to the credit reports as being late if it is not there by the actual date due. My sister in law had this happen with a car loan. They always paid by the grace period but it was still reported as late to the credit reporting agencys because it was not there by the due date. Most companies do not report it though because of the cost involved to do this every month.

You can block numbers on a cell phone. I have never done this but it should be in your settings somewhere. If you can not find it look it up in your cell phone users guide.

Really? Is this fairly new? 15 years ago when we bought our first house our attorney (older brother of a good friend) told us not to pay by the 1st, but before the 15th, and he gave a reason. I've been mailing it on the 1st for years and haven't noticed a late notation when I've checked our credit reports ??

Most companies will not report you but a select few do. I also think it depends on the state. All state laws are different when it comes to this stuff. When we had a car payment we paid it on numerous times past the 1st and it was never reported as late.

I had a call on my cell today. The message says that you need to contact them immediately about your overdue account...
They don't identify themselves so you push redial and get a message saying they are collecting on a loan - you need to enter your SS# or loan number (which loan number is rather troubling because YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE - they could be cable, electric, CC - who knows - and you don't have any overdue accounts that you are aware of...
And why would someone in this day and age blindly enter their SS# to a 1-800 # on their phone...

Hitting "0" gets you a prompt to avoid foreclosure- ahhh a clue - might be the mortgage company. But why would they call me? I've NEVER missed a payment and, in fact, have been fortunate enough to be able to send them an extra 50 dollars every month towards principal (I know it's not a lot but it sure beats not paying them).

Finally, after much hitting of '0' and a 10 minute wait, you will speak to a person who will tell you they are representing two companies (one being GMAC) that it's the bank's new autodialer and it calls as soon as you are 'late' - seems my payment didn't get there until 3 days passed the due date - but well before the grace period.

Scaring people with a message "to avoid foreclosure" and encouraging people to blindly enter the SS# to a telephone prompt for a payment 72 hours passed a due date on an otherwise up-to-date account (with extra prinicpal!) seems just a little bit scary to me.

I got an automated call from CitiMortgage three days BEFORE my due date to remind me that I have a payment due. I started getting it every month, so I finally had to call them and ask to get taken off their auto dialer -- what a nuisance!

Actually - credit companies only report when a payment is at least 30 days past due. They report # times late 30, 60, 90, 120.
