. . .apologies to my fellow Trekkies for twisting that Klingon quote of Gowron's, but you know what? My kid did it first! LOL

So, what did I eat on my trip, you ask? What didn't I eat! LOL

We just landed about 2 hours ago after a lengthy weather delay at OIA and my head is still spinning. Will file a TR later on but wanted to comment on dining while it was fresh in my mind.

We had free dining, our first time ever on the plan, and made plenty of ADR's. We kept all but one of them (I got sick mid-way through our trip and had to sit one Kona lunch out) and we even lucked into a few walk-ups for breakfast and lunch.

This will be hit or miss (I'm so tired I'm typing without my glasses) but my brain being what it is I don't want to forget.

We'll start with the WORST.

Cosmic Rays...good heavens has that place hit rock bottom. We used to love the fries there and the burgers but there is NO way those burgers are beef. Mine was horrible and I ate one bite of it, then didn't eat anything for quite awhile after it was so gross. The chicken there was only slightly better- all coating, very little meat.

It was the opinion of my family that they need to do something with the food in MK overall counter-service- it was the worst of the parks we visited (we made it to three of four skipping Animal Kingdom)

Next worst and biggest disappointment: Chefs de France. This breaks my heart because it was always my favorite meal of our trip before in times past. They totally killed the menu for free dining- my filet was gone. The half rotisserie chicken was edible but I've had better chicken counter service at the parks, our server was sweet but very harried and totally ineffecieint, and the manager on duty was downright rude. Place was packed, you couldn't hear anyone at the table with you because it was so loud- it was hugely disappointing. she also charged us for Perrier for our drink, which we got at all our other table service meals for free ???

Biggest happy surprise: had never eaten at Liberty Tree Tavern before. We snuck in for lunch as a walk in the day before our ADR and loved it so much we ate there again the next day! My dad and husband also snuck in one more lunch there during our stay- yes we ate there three times! The pot roast is off the hook. So incredible it just melts in your mouth. Props to Chef Joseph!!!

Meal which pretty much lived up to the hype: Le Cellier. Yum.

Now I have to get to bed before I collapse here but I will be adding more reviews including but not limited to, Kona for breakfast and dinner; Cali Grill, Narcoosees, and various counter service locations. . .which reminds me, a shout out to the cast at Captain Cook's at the Polynesian. They work their tails off- and were always smiling, helpful, and wonderful. Jamie and Steve were personal favorites of mine but everybody was wonderful.

Thanks for reading everyone! I really hope that our experiences will help people to figure out if they want to make adjustments to their ADR's before their upcoming trips.

As exhausted as I was last night I forgot to explain what it was that the man who I believe was the manager on duty at Chefs did that caused me to consider him rude.

The place was, as I said, packed. We were waiting for some time for our table and there was very little room in which to wait and be sure that you'd hear your name when it was called.

I got to talking with a lady standing near the doorway of the restaurant who looked very anxious. It turned out she was there with her husband who has Alzheimers, and he was getting very agitated because they'd been waiting a long time for their table. In talking with her I found out that she was a very brave woman with so much on her plate that Disney world is her escape. Her courage astounded me.

This couple had been waiting awhile already when we showed up for our ressie (which was for six forty I believe. We were a little early for ours.)

Long story short, they seat all these people and all these people, groups from 2 to 10, and finally she wonders aloud how much longer it'll be because her husband was getting even more agitated. At the podium they said it wouldn't be much longer.

Finally, they seat a couple more 2 and 4 groups then finally ANOTHER group of 8, and I ask the lady in the party of 8 as they walk by, very softly and politely if I could inquire what time their ressie was for? She said it was for six forty, and I thanked her.

I was astonished they were seating ressies that late when this other lady and her husband continued to wait when their ressie was for six.

Finally, the manager guy called our name, and I said to him, "Sir, I have to ask you, if you could please check for this lady and see why they haven't been seated yet? You're seating parties of 8 for 6:40 and this party of 2 is still waiting with a 6pm" I was tried to explain that her husband had special needs and- what I was going to say next was that he should give them OUR table.

He snarled at me and said "Go to your table and nevermind about anyone else. I will handle everyone else."

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was about to protest when he actually called the name of the other couple and they were seated behind us. The woman was very relieved, and thanked me for trying to help them out. I know they enjoyed their dinner at least, and even took me up on my dessert suggestion.

So anyway, dessert was the only thing that was not a complete disappointement to us about Chefs this time. But it was too actually in that it was a full third smaller (used to be three puff pastries, was now two).

Won't be going there again anytime soon. . . My daughter didn't want anything on the adult menu and so we used her adult TS credit for her to order from the kids one, she had the same chicken nuggets, she claims, that they serve at cosmic rays and some dried out pasta with a little tomato sauce. My husband had the salmon without the pepper sauce, and he did enjoy his lobster bisque. Dad and I had the chicken, and again, I would call it passable at best.

Just about the only other dining location in the "disappointment" column that I forgot to mention last night- we managed to get a late ADR for Ohana after checking in to the Poly- what a shock that place was. We've eaten there before at least four times and loved it every time.

This time- It was SUCH slow service (and we were starving) the servers assistant was the only one doing any work (and poor thing he was way overworked), our server kept disappearing, for the first time in my LIFE I saw dirty silverware at a Disney restaurant (I had a dirty fork at Kona the next morning as well- must be the same people doing the dishwashing). I waited forever for our server to come back so I could ask for new, finally I had to get up, go find another server, and he simply handed me the place setting from the table behind him.

The food. . . well. . . just stunk in my opinion. The menu was very different this time, no won tons, no pineapple at the end, just blech.

We paid out of pocket for that meal and I found myself wishing we'd just gone to Captain Cook's- but honestly even if we had used our dining credits and eaten for free it would've been a disappointment. The only thing I really liked was the mixed vegetables- the spice was yummy. The potatoes were good but I can eat potatoes anywhere. The meat was all overcooked and hard to chew let alone swallow, the other appetizers were cold when served. . .it was just bad all around.

The environment there was also nothing short of zoo-ish and I don't mean the kids activities. Maybe it was the free dining thing, I don't know. But the people who work there all seemed really stressed out (some of the women at the podium were very cold) and overall- I don't care if we ever eat there again it was that bad.

Now to balance out all the negativity here. . .let me tell you about how incredible, amazing, and sublime Cali Grill was. . .

We had a 5:30 ADR and arrived at the desk early at 4:50. We waited around for 25 minutes after checking in before finding out that we could've gone up and waited at the bar after 5PM, the girl who checked us in didn't tell us that. So be aware, after 5 you can go up to the lounge!

Aside from that, the meal was a complete dream. Our server Jose was simply amazing. He was very attentive, helpful, and really went out of his way for us!

The food was, every single dish, nothing short of perfection. We ordered: the chicken flatbread (sorry forget the exact name), the three cheese flatbread, some mac and cheese (don't think me crazy, their macaroni and cheese is off the hook) in fact I was willing to pay for it but the manager allowed us to use our appetizer option for a bowl for each my daughter and I. Yummmmmmmmm.

Dad had the Red Snapper and loved it, the rest of us all had the filet and it was melt in your mouth fabulous. The desserts were unreal as well- husband had something called Blueberry Bliss that he is still talking about! I had a chocolate cake dessert with plain ice cream instead of coffee flavored (sorry again forget the name) and it was heaven. Dad was too full for dessert but very very happy!!!

We would pay out of pocket to eat here (and have done four times before) and would do it again in a heartbeat. I was actually sorry that we didn't have another ADR there for later in the trip.

Simply incredible!!!! Five stars for Cali Grill.

Next. . .Counterservice: the Final Frontier. . .as well as Le Cellier (our first time there ever) and Narcoosees. . .

So they're not all turning out to be quick, I will try to be less verbose!

Counter service: Best individual items: the chapotle chicken vegetable soup at the Land Pavillion in EPCOT: YUMMY!

Loved the counter service food at Poly at Captain Cook's too esp. the mickey waffles and the stir fry with noodles.

Chicken strips at Electric Umbrella at Epcot were good, as was the chicken noodle soup at Cosmic Rays which we only noticed the last day of our stay (pity!)

The rest of the food at Cosmic Rays was awful this trip. The chicken was all coating and so hard I couldn't chew it without risking my dental work! The burgers did not taste like any meat I've consumed before. Fries were okay. Place was a mess though staff tried so hard to keep up. No one ever seems to want to clean up their trays on vacation

Thumbs up for Pizza Planet as usual! Our favorite counter service at the Studios. Chocolate chip cookie with our meal was a nice surprise.

The bakery at Kringle (i think it is) at Norway was stale this time, a major disappointment. It has always been good before. I thought it was a fluke with the apple danish so asked for a cherry one instead but it was just as bad. The latte was okay.

For you coffee lovers out there: Bar none the best coffee I had the whole trip was at Kona Cafe. Not the coffee bar- they really need real half and half there and not coffee mate. I asked if they could make a Mocha with regular coffee not espresso but apparently they have a machine that mixes it up automatically so they couldn't. Coffee everywhere else was Nescafe with coffee mate, so you know what that means. Definitely going to use those coffee singles next trip!

The bakery in Magic Kingdom- wonderful! We were actually the first ones in the door when they opened one morning and everything was melt in your mouth wonderful. We had apple and cherry danish, and a giant cinnamon roll.

I did the "ice cream' tour of WDW this time and enjoyed the Edy's ice cream immensely. Also had our standard pop corn, tried my first Turkey Leg (it tasted like ham to me for some reason! I wouldn't do that again LOL) and had mickey rice krispie treats (yummmmmmmmmmmm)

We hadn't planned to eat any breakfast sit-down on this trip, but one morning dad and I were up early and so he wanted to try to get coffee. Then he wanted to eat at Kona. They were able to fit us in, and he was THRILLED.

The fruit plate is amazing. Every item we ate on the breakfast menu was outstanding. We actually ended up eating breakfast there three times: and tried these items: Eggs benedict (dad loved it) the huge breakfast platter (King kamaya I think it was called?) it had eggs and french toast and bacon and potato wedges and YUMMMM. Blueberry pancakes were great the second time they brought them out and they actually had blueberries in them *LOL* First time they missed that part somehow. Eggs were incredible, I LOVED the french toast (I skipped the famous Tonga toast cause I don't like bananas). Thumbs WAY up for Kona's food, breakfast and dinner.

The only thing about our Kona experience at dinner was our server was kinda grumpy and seemed to want to get us in and out. But the food was delicious. I was a bit surprised that the Prime Rib looked like regular steak (grilled in some fashion) and was glad I'd ordered the noodle stir fry thing (they put both chicken and shrimp in it because I had a hard time deciding, and both were amazing) we had the delicious chicken noodle soup for appetizer and my husband had the sticky wings which he enjoyed- look out for bones in that chicken soup my daughter nearly swallowed one! That was a scary moment, fortunately she noticed it before it was too late.

Dessert was amazing we had the volcano cake I think it was- I wish I'd ordered the Kona Kone though cause it looked so fun- I mean cotton candy and ice cream??? I couldn't even eat my dessert I was too full. We would definitely do dinner here again.

The fireworks are at 6:00 that night, so it would be great to have a table that we could view Wishes from.

I'm a little concerned about our ADR for Chefs de France -- been reading a lot of negative reviews over the past few months. I really dislike cramped restaurants. I know it's the norm at Disney World, but it sounds like you were elbow to elbow with your neighbors.

If you dislike elbow to elbow dining, then definitely rethink this ADR. We were VERY lucky in that they put us at a table that was in the outer area of the restaurant (by a window) but if you're in the interior room. . .I could NOT believe how tightly packed people were, like sardines. I told my husband at the time that if they'd tried to seat us there, I probably would have wanted to just forget it, it was such a zoo of strollers, highchairs, and people.

I'm sorry I didn't try the pork, but everything else we ate there was good! The flatbreads basically look like pepperoni pizza- and I was surprised to find they start serving them pretty early in the day (before 11 am if I remember right) I wanted a late-ish breakfast one day and went down there at like 10:45 and they had already moved on to the lunch menu (which seemed the same to me as the dinner menu but I could be wrong on that! We mostly ate there at breakfast- and only once at dinner.)

We used up all our snack credits mostly on drinks. I can't imagine how people have a hard time thinking of ways to use these up! We also found that with the breakfast platters you get 2 drinks- you can get say a coffee and juice or (our favorite) a big Nesquick milk and the larger size bottled orange juice. We had used up all our snack credits for 8 days by the 5th day mostly on drinks (and a few bowls of cereal/ice cream treats, etc) . . .

Liberty Tree Tavern- the best surprise of our trip!

We had an ADR for Thursday of our trip, but we were off to the perfect start on Wednesday- having been first in line for the Bakery when it opened and having pastry and coffee (and running into the Dapper Dans there- a story for my trip report coming up!!!) we found that after my daughter was lucky enough to get picked for the Sparrow Pirate Tutorial (the very first time we ever saw the show!) and got finished fencing with Jack, that we were all ravenous and we decided to see if we could do a walk-in at Liberty Tree (paying OOP for it as we were saving up TS credits for Cali Grill and Narcoosees).

We got there as soon as they opened, and within minutes they seated us! Michael took great care of us; we ordered the smoothies made with lemonade, sprite and orange sherbert (the name escapes me) we ALL loved it. This day we skipped appetizers and went straight for the big food: Dad and I ordered Pot Roast and DH and DD ordered the Pilgrim's feast.

OMG, the food was mouthwatering. My dad was so amazed by the pot roast that he asked if the chef was a man or a woman, then when finding out it was a man he said "Darn, all my daughters are already married." LOL We actually got to meet Chef Joseph as he came out of the kitchen to talk to the people at the table next to us (the lady had a gluten allergy) and he was quite jovial and fun to talk to. The man sure can direct a kitchen and when we praised him (highly) he was certain to also credit his crew of "about 20" hardworking people in the kitchen who help him every day.

The potatoes were great, the green beans were delicious too and we were too full for dessert the first lunch. We all decided we were definitely keeping our ADR for the next day!!!

When we came back Michael saw us and went to the podium to ask for our ticket so he could serve us again We all did a repeat of the former day's dining but I also had chowder which was excellent- so thick and lots of potatoes the way I prefer it.

We were still too full for dessert- but were all just overwhelmed with how much we loved the lunch menu here. I think it's a pity that they don't offer the same entrees at dinner!

Later in our trip, we had lunch ressies at Kona but I wasn't feeling well and stayed at the room. Left to their own devices, my family cancelled lunch at Kona and snagged yet another lucky last minute ADR for Liberty tree- yes, they ate there THREE times! This time DD only opted for chowder (finished every bite) and DF and DH both had the pot roast. Dad STILL hasn't stopped talking about it LOL even after we ate at Narcoosees!!!

So big thumbs up here on Liberty Tree- and after eating there 3 times in one 9 day period I can't believe it's a fluke. So if you have ADR's there, go and enjoy! And if Michael is your server tell him the crazy family from Michigan that he served twice recently in two days says hi! LOL

Sorry I missed this question before DisOhana. . . We arrived at 4:50 and still were not seated until about 5:40 (we were the first people to check in for dinner far as I could tell, they didn't even open up the bar until 5 a fact we were not aware of until later).

We didn't ask for a fireworks view because they were so late that night and for our first time at CG got sat on the Epcot side of the restaurant, which was a nice change.

I would not count on getting a window table even if you show up early; you can definitely ask for one, but they don't guarantee them. You can however step out onto the viewing area to watch the fireworks (they piped in the music when we did that in 2004) it's lovely to watch from there albeit a little windy up on top the Contemporary!

I hope that you can get your window table. We didn't ask for one but were surprised with the absolute BEST table at Narcoosees for viewing Wishes on our last night (I thanked Matt at the podium like half a dozen times) but I've found these things are often the luck of the draw. I hope you get your dream table!!!

This is a meal I have thought a lot about since getting home.

When we ate there I thought it was really fabulous. But then I was very hungry, exhausted, and hepped up on medication at the time! LOL

The cast there certainly was friendly (I teased them at the podium that I was tempted to walk up and say I had a party of fifteen who wanted to eat RIGHT NOW and they all laughed) they started to do Canada trivia before we were called to our table, which did not take long at all (we showed up a little early for our 5:30 ressie).

An aside about EPCOT and WDW in general: why do ANY of the restrooms only have two stalls? This figured into our meal as there was a near catastrophe in the restroom as another guest rushed in, she seemed as if she'd eaten something too spicy as her face was beet red and she was fanning herself and pointing to her throat. I thought maybe she was choking but I could see she was breathing- my daughter was about to go into the stall but I looked at this lady and said "are you all right?" and she shook her head 'no' and I grabbed my daughter's arm and pulled her back, and we made a hasty exit as the woman went into the stall. I grabbed the nearest server and recommended they send security in to check on her right away as she looked very unwell. If she'd been obviously choking of course I'd have tried more to help her physically immediately- but they sent in the manager I guess and DD and I had to go ALL the way down to the McDonalds outside Canada (that is a haul!) to wash our hands so we could eat and try to shake off the unsettling experience we'd just had.

When we got back we saw the lady was back at her table and eating and talking with her family, so I think she just must've gotten a taste of something too spicy.

Our server was training a new server, and both of them were sweet, smiling, and helpful. We were allowed to have our Perrier as our beverage on the DDP again here (again making me mad they charged me for it at France) and we ordered the beef barley soup, which I would rate as 'good'. The pretzel bread was good, if a bit hard to chew (I think this batch was overdone) and we all ordered the filet without the maple glaze.

It was good. At the time I thought it was great- but thinking back on it now I would say that it was just good. It was a steak. It was definitely not the best steak I've ever had in my life.

My father loved it there even though it was so dark inside we literally had to use flashlights to read our menus (and I had a hard time getting around in the restaurant with my reduced vision) but we managed. I saved room for dessert and had the chocolate Moose which was delicious. Dad was again too full for dessert and hubby had the sorbet, which he raved about.

Everyone wants to eat there again- me I could eat there or not. I think that the food at Kona was superior (in my opinion) so if I can't get a ressie there next trip, I won't cry too hard. But it was, all in all, a very good meal and the service was excellent.

I'm trying to think of any other places we ate to put in here before I finish off with our finale meal, at Narcoosees our last night- which was the showstopper of the trip, IMO! With Cali Grill as a VERY close second. . .stay tuned!

Just read your Chefs review, and we had a similar wait experience. It seemed they were taking walk ups and it just pushed everyone back. We were sat about 25 minutes after our ADR which really isn't too bad, but it was packed in the waiting area outside.

That was my reaction when I found out that we could use 2 TS credits per person to dine at Narcoosees when I scored free dining for our trip (we had already booked our plane tickets and were lucky we could get the resort and all that we wanted and free dining too. For us it was like winning the lottery!)

We saved Narcoosees for the last night of our trip, and our experience there was magical.

Even though I did get some looks for bringing my daughter into the restaurant at first (which shocked me considering we have eaten there before and she was much younger- she is 11 and quite a young lady, she was dressed to the nines, we all were, but for some reason the restaurant seemed to have a lot of couples that night who didn't seem to understand why we'd be there!) But all attention was drawn away when a family walked in with two very tired toddlers LOL So tired, they fell asleep at the table and didn't make a peep.

We were given (I didn't ask for a window table at all) THE table. I mean, this has to be the best table at Narcoosees- window table DIRECTLY across from the castle. I just about cried when I saw it, I kept thinking that they were going to tell us it was a mistake but it wasn't! I thanked the young man at the podium several times, and he smiled and said he was glad it was turning into a magical evening for us.

We started with appetizers- DD, Dad and I ordered the seafood chowder and DH ordered the 'spiced shrimp' I was scared off by the name, but as soon as I tasted the chowder I was sorry I'd ordered it. It was just totally fishy and not in a good way IMO- but my DF and DD did eat it- shocked me that the child ate it!

I just hated the soup and wanted the waiter to take it away. I was not expecting him to bring me anything else, and I just asked him to remove it. He asked what was wrong and I blurted out "It's too fishy" and he replied, rather sarcastically "Well it IS fish soup." I felt like an idiot momentarily (you can't tell from looking at me that I'm a neurology patient and that I often switch words- don't say things the way I mean to when speaking verbally- I do better with writing/typing) and he must've felt bad because of my expression because he hastily asked if there was anything else he could bring. Since he offered I asked for the spiced shrimp, and OH MY! It was just to die for. The vinagrette was just incredible and the shrimp itself was heavenly. I could've eaten dozens of them!

We all ordered the surf and turf- this was DD's first taste of lobster. She decided she didn't like it- so my husband and I were happy to help her out Now I had ordered my steak medium- and it was most definitely well done (no pink at all). I was disappointed but I couldn't bring myself to send it back, because we were eating for free and it would have pained me to waste that beautiful meal. So I ate it, finding that even though it was overcooked (for my taste anyway) it was still tender, juicy, and delicious. The lobster tail was quite simply the best lobster I've ever eaten.

We ordered dessert next...DD ordered the chocolate gateau (sp?), DH and DF ordered the sorbet trio (Peach, lemon and blackberry- all delicious) and I ordered the signature dessert, the almond encrusted cheesecake.

OMG.

That cheesecake was seriously one of the most amazing things I have ever tasted in my life, and the way it was plated? Brought tears to my eyes. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone who orders it- but it is truly a work of art and I couldn't stop staring at the plating. Truly fitting for the Year of a Million Dreams!

Our bill all told was 378.00. (but was free because of the free DDP) Yes, we did tip over the DDP tip. Oh, forgot to mention that they let me have a non-alcoholic daquari as my drink with the plan- I had expected to pay for it. We did pay cash for my dad's glass of wine.

All the men have talked about since we got home was how amazing it was to eat there on the free DDP. My regret about the DDP week now is that we didn't save up for a third 2 TS credit meal- our meals at the CG and Narcoosees were astonishing.

Wishes started just before they brought our dessert, and from our perfect table we got to watch not only that show but the intense electrical storm that happened all through the rest of our dinner- which was only cool to watch because we were indoors!

So if you are planning to go to Narcoosees, be prepared to be dazzled, by the view, the food, and the whole experience. We WILL go here again- and pay OOP to do it if we have to!!!
