Get water before takeoff?

I'm flying out for the first time since the liquid restrictions. I usually carry some water for my son to drink during take off if he has issues w/ his ears. Do you think if I bring his EMPTY sippy cup onto the plane, I could get some water before takeoff?

That is what I am going to try to do.

Just a word of caution. I have heard that you do NOT want to drink water from the plane unless it comes out of a bottle. (Don't fill the sippy cup from the sink.)

See www.tsa.gov, but to the best of my knowledge, you can't bring any liquids on board - even those purchased after going through security.

I think the OP is asking if a FA will give her/him some water to put in the sippy cup after boarding but before take-off. I haven't asked for this myself, but I have witnessed this very thing (also people being given water to mix formula) recently.

Stand there and ask for it, do not take no for a response. Be polite, but keep asking.

Let's get real if the airlines want they can get this changed where you could bring water you bought in the airport on the plane. (The airlines managed to get an exemption from the rules for THEIR employees so they have the power to affect some change) So if they have to take time out of thier boarding process to do this, then maybe they will help move the TSA towards something resembeling common sense....

(Current rules lack a LOT of common sense, FAs and Pilots can bring on anything they want, IF you are flying international and buy liquids in the Duty Free area they can be brought on as long as they are in the plastic bag......I am sure that's a secure method, no one can break into a plastic bag LOL!)

Stand there and ask for it

Please don't stand there to ask for your water ~ you'll be in the way of others (trying to) board the plane.
Take your seats and then ask the FA for a bottle of water. I'm sure they'll be able to get you one.

I had no problems getting my daughters sippy cup filled with water before take off. This was with Air Tran. :thumbsup2

My point is that by standing there you are delaying their boarding. This has a few effects

1. They won't forget about you... trust me they forget about those of us in first class. It takes them about 2 seconds to reach over and grab that bottle of water so it should not "delay" boarding.... Good luck finding an FA after that or having them be able to swim upstream to your seat to assist you.
2. If their precious boarding schedule is delayed the FAs and gate agents will complain to their management who will complain to the TSA. If those beverages sold in the gate area are not "safe" enough to allow me to bring them on the plane then WHY are they 'safe' enough to sell to me out there? Either the TSA screened those beverages or they didn't. (And of course if that same bottle of water had been sold to your FA it would be safe but YOU the taxpayer can't be trusted with that water)

Sorry, but I am tired of the TSA reacting to a 10 year old threat as if it is NEW and exciting.

I saw an FA hand a passenger a cup of water right after boarding last week. They poured it from a large bottle, I'm not sure they had individual bottles.

As I board I usually ask the FA (flight attendant) for a bottle of water so that I can take medicine. I have never once been refused.

Now if only I could convince Delta to have an ice cold bottle of Pepsi waiting for me when I board then my life would be SO much easier despite these ridiculous restrictions.

You are aware, of course, that if you obstruct the boarding process, you can be arrested or tossed off the plane(or both). This applies to those standing and insisting on water, especially if the FA asks you to take a seat and wait until the other pax board. There is enough inconsideration with people as it is, let's not encourage more.
As to the TSA, ok, I do agree, some of their rules are inane, however, IMHO, you have beaten this TSA dead horse enough. It ain't going to move. You and I both know that the taxpayer cannot be "trusted" to do anything anymore. The best way to be trusted is to get the elected officials to actually a. listen to the people that elected them, b. get them to keep their promises and c. if they don't do a and b, vote them out.
If all these rules upset you, write to your congressmen or the president.
The TSA exempted the air crews because they saw no immediate threat (yes, yes, I know about the one deranged FA). BUT, I have heard and read about enough postal workers going postal, but, I still use the US Mail now and then.
I am still wondering about the exemption for KY Jelly. That truly has me baffled. ;)

I just flew this weekend on Delta. On all four legs of my roundtrip (2 down, 2 back), I was able to get a little bottle of water (Dasani) before takeoff. I asked the flight attendants as they walked down the aisle shutting the overhead bins.
I don't know if the FAs on airlines who serve the water in cans (Southwest) will do the same, but I'll be asking the next time I fly Southwest.

Not sure if SWA does, did not see anyone ask on my recent flights.

Stopping to ask the FA for something will NOT get you arrested and if it does then I am going postal. Let's see the family with 20 carryons and the business men with the oversize computer case are taking up a LOT more time then my request. I don't think that asking for water and WAITING on them to provide is going to dramatically delay boarding unless you have an FA with an attitude which means that they should be in a different job. (Yes, I have had them... the FAs who think that talking to the customer is beneath them...) As a matter of fact I would probably step aside to allow others to board while they meet my request. I am NOT advocating blocking others, I am advocating making sure you get what you need.

Don't worry I have written EVERYONE. I will vote based on my elected officals decisions on how they deal with the TSA.... I am tired of feeling no more safer but a LOT more harrassed....Any increased saftey is probably due to the efforts of the CIA, FBI and your local law enforcement then the TSA

I have passed the TSA's trusted traveler program but I am NOT trustworthy enough to carry on water while the FA is????? (I can think of about 10 easy ways to sneak on the liquid explosives that the TSA probably wouldn't catch and I am not a creative person. I am an accountant! ) This is just doing something to say we did something.. a haulmark of the TSA. (Which as an airline employee who posts here told me stands for Thousands Standing Around....)

(Why do posters on the DIS love to post that standing up for your rights will get you arrested, on watch lists etc? Is that what America is now, expecting the FAs to meet my request for water is going to get me in jail??? Guess I will have to take my chances with this.)

The bottles of water is a Delta thing. United doesn't do that and I don't believe most carriers do; Delta has been doing the bottle fo water for years, albeit various brands.

You bet! But while you are on your campaign to get the current silly rules changed, don't stop with them allowing us to bring liquids bought in secure areas onto the plane. The entire ban on liquids and gels is pointless. It may have been necessary to temporarily calm people's fears. But it - like earlier rules that inconvenienced passengers without providing safety - can now be removed.

Umm..to whoever asked about SW, we are flying SW in 10 days and I planned on asking for my son. I will let you know when we get bacK!!! :thumbsup2

This is what I was responding to. "Stand there and ask for it, do not take no for a response. Be polite, but keep asking." That delays boarding, and you yourself said " My point is that by standing there you are delaying their boarding. This has a few effects

I have NO problem with asking for something I may need, but, also, I do have a problem with being inconsiderate of others.

Standing up for your rights will not get you arrested, however, I don't believe it is a right to hold up boarding, which you did mention twice, and I also don't believe that requesting water is a right. I do know that causing a delay in boarding is something you can get into BIG trouble for.

I liken the TSA to a neighborhood watch. They may be powerless in some ways, but, they are a deterrant.

My point is that by standing there you are delaying their boarding. This has a few effects

and if your holding up boarding don't be supprised if they escort you off the plane.
Please take a seat and ask FA when all are boarded. Don't cause problems they don't need.

What happens if all pre-boarders decide they need water for the children?
Who decides who gets it when entering plane or when seated?

Boy if this happens boarding will really be a joke.
